Less is often more with development resources.
Well, yeah, theorycrafting and conjecture happen with limited information given, but that's just the nature of the beast. When holes exist, people fill them themselves. But in this specific case I forgot that the roadmap was given before the planning was set in stone, and for that I apologize. However, I still think you guys are biting off more than you guys can chew. More jaws are needed. Maybe, you gotta have big dreams.
have you thought to consult with other industry professionals? there's alot of experience out there. you were not the first to develop on the ps3. surely there are tricks to be learned from those who walked this path before, why not speak with them?

Sorry if I came across as being accusatory. It's just that we've been put through the wringer with Dust in the past so I want to make sure I've got all my bases covered.
Good to hear that performance is being worked on though! I'm a little disappointed that PC2.0 is being pushed back but I think in the long run this is for the best. I get the feeling that there are one or two deep-rooted issues that have been causing the performance problems and resolving them might lead to a big increase in performance, I hope that's the case.

Cat you sound like someone that has some experience with software development. Did you consider that adding more to a team can cause a clear vision to be somewhat obscured? That managing a bigger team has its own additional overheads? A perfect software team would nail a lot of this stuff...but I would suggest there is no such thing.
My own personal take is that despite having more resources in the past, less was delivered (based on what was promised!). What we don't know is whether the previous DUST team were pulled from pillar to post, split up, put onto other CCP projects, put back together again, etc. etc.
I feel confident in saying CCP Ratatti has been 100% a DUST resource since he started. I am in no way saying the team should *not* be increased in size, just that it's not as simple as what I'm hearing you say.

Can you get on that player trading, CCP Ratatai? I want to get my PS3 out of the house. Have to say that is about how I feel anymore. I would really like to just give away all my BPO's and be done with this game. Keep thinking well maybe it will be good to keep things for IF Legion ever gets released but that is something I don't see happening for a long long time if ever. Wanted to be done the other day but figured I had to try out the new stuff and so far no complaints on what they added but it is still the same game I have come to hate. Now I have to decide quit until trading is added and give all my stuff away and quit for good or login just long enough every 2 days to claim from warbarge mods until proto stomps in pubs is fixed. Either way I am gone when PS2 is released.

I am in no way saying the team should *not* be increased in size, just that it's not as simple as what I'm hearing you say. Actually I personally have no experience in software development. Sure I dabbled in Python here and there, but I never actually took the leap and made any functional software intended to have a use. However my brother has, and I know a lot about software development from him, as well as a lot of research from the internet.
So with that out of the way... Rattati's team is probably very, very small from what we can gather. Adding more people in will of course add management overhead, that's not even a question, but done correctly their work will be worth more time than you spend on managing what they do. That cap is usually hit between 50-100 people, with some studios being able to muster 200, but at Rattati's team size I'm sure he could handle adding an extra 3-5 people.
In fact, I'm almost certain that the reason DUST was in such a bad shape is BECAUSE of management that couldn't handle it. They didn't know what to do, they didn't have a clear vision and how to achieve it. Mind you this is conjecture and speculation, but it seems very likely that this is the case from the who knows how many hours I've spent on these forums, analyzing CCP's every move.
As a last note, you can't ask a programmer to do 3D modeling, and you can't ask a writer to code a new system in. Some speciality people are required to do certain things, and Rattati doesn't appear to have some specific people.

Bayeth Mal wrote:So some of you may remember a couple of months ago I was joking about how a potential employer spent thousands of dollars to fly me across the country, put me up in a resort hotel just so they could talk to me in person.
Well it's a funny story that...
When I initially applied for the job I got the standard cut and past rejection letter reply. A couple of hours later I got another email and phone call apologising and asking if I still wanted to do the interview. I said sure and a few days later did a phone interview. Then they flew me out for the in person interview at their expense. Then about a week later got a phone call saying sorry but they went with somebody else. Fair enough... that was all back in late November. Cut to yesterday and I just got an email asking if I was still interested in the job.
So... Do I take the job I've already been rejected twice for? Haha.
Note: The problem is it's very far away and remote... it's on a small island off the northern coast of Australia. Away from my girlfriend with whom I just recently had a 10 year anniversary. To put it in perspective, most of you can probably only name one Australian city, Sydney. It's so far from Sydney that in a straight line I'd actually be closer to the Philippines (which I might note is in a different hemisphere). Though apparently they have ADSL2+ internet out there, but I'm not sure how stable the connection is. Either way, if I decide to take the job either you'll be seeing a lot more of me (nothing else to do out there) or none of me at all.
Yo Bayeth
Think of the scenario where it doesn't work out - you uproot, work out there for a week, a month, a year or something, but for whatever reasons, you have to find something else. How much of a problem is that? Understand that risk and weigh it up.
I would also ask them straight up, why all the messing about? What happened to the previous incumbent? That's a very important question and because they've messed you about and you don't sound like you would have a problem if they didn't like your question, you should ask for specifics. Whatever happened to that person could happen the same for you, especially if it's job-related.
I took a job not so long ago - they messed about for a bit, but it was a real chance for me to jump in at the deep end. I was completely honest with them at the interview, told them what experience I had etc.
My wife wasn't so sure - her instinct was telling her something was off because of the waiting around. But, to my surprise they finally offered it to me, and I took it. I took myself and her to a new location (only 30 miles away but a world away in terms of local people), and started this new job. Six months later I had to find a new one, which meant a commute 30 miles back in the direction we'd just come from. Six months after that we moved back to a similar area.
The risks there, if it didn't work out, were:
- we have moved house for the job (only renting at the time) - financial costs involved in moving house (not massive but everything is relative) - emotional strain from moving and being unsure it would work out - emotional strain from fitting-in in a new area - have to find a new job and explain why only six months at the previous one
Mitigating factors were:
- we had to move anyway - jobs in my line of work are easy to come by <--- I'm lucky - big opportunity for my career
What we lost because it didn't work out:
- money to move house (as we had to move again) - money spent on commuting 60 miles / day for six months - generally chalked-up as a bad experience
What we gained:
- not much, but I learnt that the way a company behaves in the lead-up to an offer should not be missed because you are gagging to take the opportunity. That's what I did - the warning signs were there but I didn't consider them. When I got there, after a few months, it was obvious the MD was a nut and the source of the messing around. That was never likely to change.
The saying "Fortune favours the brave" did not apply in our case. It will for others. Ultimately if we hadn't tried, we would never have known. We took a calculated risk that didn't work out, but we were in a position to do so relatively safely. If we'd had kids in school or a mortgage etc., we might have made a different decision.
TL;DR
I would say consider your worst-case scenario, and listen to your gut. You may find you made a mistake, you may not. But definitely talk with them some more about it. On the phone (assuming face to face is out) if possible.

Both sides of the argument does have merit though.
A smaller team of better skilled programmers can do much more than a far more massive team of uncoordinated developers.
FFXIV had a similar deal happen when flipping over from 1.0 to 2.0.
The new team is far smaller yet much more capable.
While the new dust 514 team is much smaller and more capable and willing to listen to the community; there are desires wanted out of the team that is not possible yet. Also CCP Rattati knows best of his needs and his teams capabilities and his allocation of resources.

So today was balls. Had 7 keys on offer today, got none. Two were from a mission, get 70 kills. Time consuming, but fair enough. On any other day I would've nailed that in 5 matches. Today was complete bullshit with stomps being as frequent as a day in 1.7 To top that, my controls ****** themselves sideways. Constant random bouts of reloading, aiming, crouching and jumping. I'd assume the control finally kicked the bucket if it hadn't been working perfectly for Hardline just before and after. (Great fun, beta's out.)
Other missions made it downright impossible to nab the other five keys, two were get kill assists from a vehicle turret. Would be grand if anyone actually fit them. That and even if I do get one it's really hard for me to not kill people outright. Then there was a get 8k sp in one match one. Which is completely impossible without boosters. And you all know how cheap I am.
On Hardline: Playing it has made me notice what has been missing from Battlefield, hell all first person shooters, all this time. Shotgun Jousting.
Get on it Rattati.
