Militia shotgun is good. Also consider speccing your side arm of choice first and duel wield them. Dual SMG and dual Scrambler Pistols I did a lot very early on.
Live without the cloak for the time being. Many here will disagree but speccing up your HP I recommend. Gal is a kind of dual tank play style though. Shields in the highs until you spec precision and put in precision enhancers.
Also do gallente faction warfare, this allows you to buy suits and mods 1 rank above what you're specced to.

@Garin
The reason I suggested going Gal 3 instead of 5 is because, according to Cass's math, he can still max dampen with the same modules on level 3.
Considering I don't think he will be running proto suits yet, I think it would be more efficient to use his SP elsewhere once he is able to max dampen.
Also, if you don't know what weapons you want to use, I suggest creating alts and playing around with a variety until you hit on something. Just go level 1 on the alts and run the standard versions in the Academy.
Then you can go on your main and skill into what you want, and you can even transfer the ISK from your alt.

Wanted to run an insane idea by you because it is late, and it just came to me, and my tired brain thinks its a good idea, even though its purely a thought experiment.
What would you think if Legion broke down dropsuit skills by race instead of heaviness/lightness?
As it is now, if you want a Minmatar Heavy, you skill into Heavy dropsuits.
What if the skill tree were more like
Minmatar Dropsuits.
Minmatar Medium Frames unlocked at 1
Minmatar Light Frames unlocked at 3
Minmatar Heavy Frames unlocked at 5.
You could give the entire race bonuses that could fit RP purposes, and maybe make some lore and whatnot more meaningful.
Just some crazy thoughts my late at night brain is having.

Had this idea a longo time ago. I still want it. Wide bonus for Minmatar race, followed by a frame size bonus, followed by a specialization bonus.
Like for example:
Race: Sprint Speed and Stamina Regen +1% per level. Frame: Light - Movement Speed bonus +1% per level. Spec: Scout - 15% fitting reduction for cloak per level. 5% NK damage per level
Race: Sprint Speed and Stamina Regen +1% per level. Frame: Medium - Projectile weapon clip size +5% per level Sped: Assault - 5% fitting reduction to Light Weapon/Sidearm/Grenade per level. -3% shield delay and depleted per level.
So on and so forth.

Its like they are unintentionally trying to force everyone to run squads.
While I am seeing fewere absolute stomps, I am seeing fewer truly close matches. Its like one side is set up to lose for sure, just not by too much.

Minmatar Dropsuits.

Minmatar Light Frames unlocked at 3
Minmatar Heavy Frames unlocked at 5.

Just some crazy thoughts my late at night brain is having.
It's not a crazy idea, I had a similar idea about a year ago.
Though in my suggestion weapons and suits were all part of the same tree (requires full racial parity though).
First you pick a race, Gallente lets say, so you spec into the "Gallente Infantry Skill". That unlocks access to the Assault and Logi trees at 3, Scout, Commando and Sentinel trees at 5. But that base racial skill also unlocks Basic medium frames, Plasma Rifle and Ion Pistol at the usual ranks (1, 3 and 5). This gets you into a decent generic assault type fit ASAP. All the other weapons unlock from that base racial skill as well at varying levels.
Then, each speciality suit when it reaches 5 gives a 5% reduction in SP cost to everything else in that racial tree, so all the other suits and weapons drop in their SP cost by 5%.
The logic being that suits and equipment from a single race likely use the same systems and programming language, so once you've learnt one, you'll find it easier to learn the others as they were all designed around a similar framework. So if you've already maxxed assault, scout, sentinel and logi, commando becomes 80% of the usual SP cost. Also all Gallente weapons become 80% of their usual SP cost.
This (hopefully) has a kind of anti-FotM chasing effect, as rarely is the OP suit and OP weapon of the month of the same race.
This also rewards RP loyalists and will create some very tense Faction Warfare battles as you getting gear all from one side is actually pretty damn viable.
Mods and equipment will have to remain their own tree as it is now but races could get flat bonuses to a given mod/equipment type. e.g. Gallente: Flat bonus to Rep mods and Scanning equipment for all suits of that race regardless of SP investment. Minmatar: Bonus to Damage Mods, Kincats and energizers etc.
This way IDing a suits race can tell you a lot about it. "Oh that's minmatar, watch the hell out, he's almost definitely running damage mods, what with their 30% efficiency bonus, if they get the jump on you, you'll get melted."
It does force each race a little more into their zone, but that's more of just a beginning ground for newer players. Vets with 30mil SP+ will already be well into their 2nd racial specilisation (depending on how much they chose to max out on their first race). Rather than the current situation "Well I already maxxed heavy, maybe I'll go scout" Now it's "I'm done with Amarr, maybe I'll go Caldari next" and from there you can easily mix and match.
Basically my goal is to have new players get into a decent fit early on for pub matches, then specilise around a given play style for PC before widening (High rep CQC then Ranged Tank etc) and then mix and matching. The net effect is getting PC ready in a shorter time and giving a cheap way to widen your role for less SP than what it is currently, but still giving vets something to work towards in terms of varied game play.
Also each speciality suit could give a bonus to all suits of that race once the specialty suit skill hits 5. So Sentinel at 5 could give a 5% bonus to the given tank of that race (armor for Amarr and Gallente), scout gives a 5% reduction to profile, Commando gives a 15% bonus to ammo and Assault a 10% bonus to reload speed, logi a 10% reduction to all equipment fitting costs. The idea being that you learnt a programming trick when setting up your suits from your experience in that speciality.
Hope that Wall o'Text made sense, I have been drinking burbon.
We'll bang, OK?

I think I am gonna try out the militia SG just to get some play with it in CQC and I like the CR for the range and ability to be a little safely out of range, but that is with my current Glass-esque Caldari suit or the pre-made fits. I am so new I am just learning a lot of this so I am just having a blast. Last night I ran my standard Logi suit in my first squad. We went 2win/2loss and I got some serious training on squad play. I think I may enjoy scout even more since there is some more direct action then just running around with my repper. |

Rattati EWAR ideas: https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=2442533#post2442533
Lots of good here, but I've a couple concerns ...
TacNet Directional Arrow
I very much like this idea in concept but would emphasize caution; it may serve to exacerbate two of our biggest problems (heavy spam, assault lite) ...
Firstly, the very last thing competitive play needs (according to Rattati's earlier metrics) is a buff to Heavies, and not knowing which direction a fatty is facing represents a significant one. As precision-based contingencies (i.e scale / falloff) are off-the-table, I would strongly recommend either restoring directional arrow when painted by Active Scan or leaving directional arrows in place for heavy infantry units.
Secondly, this is gameplay nerf to assassin-styled play which will do little to address Assault Lite. As far as I know, "slayer scouts" still prefer the frontlines, HP buffer and wiggle-wiggle over damps, flanking and general sneakiness. Nerfing mechanics which aid sneaky Assassins like Musturd won't impact Assault Lite. If sneaky fits and playstyles were to prove ineffective, I'd expect to see an increase in the ranks of Assault Lite. All that to say, if we do this, we should be careful how we do this.
Equalized Passive Scan Range (15m)
Recon Scouts seem to be getting a bad wrap, and I'm not sure why. They certainly aren't slaying. These units are good for balance and squad play, and there's nothing easy about running around with a half-second TTK. Two competent Recon Scouts exist:
CA Scout Recon HS: Cmp Shield (x2), Cmp Precision (x2) LS: Cmp Range (x2) HP: 307 / 87 Range: 91m ---> 68m Profile: 27 dB Precision: 24 dB
AM Scout Recon HS: Cmp Precision (x2) LS: Cmp Range (x2), Cmp Reactive, Cmp Damp HP: 75 / 279 Range: 61 dB ---> 45m Profile: 24 dB Precision: 18 dB
^ Note that either one of these can keep your squad safe from undampened Scouts. Note their profile and how easily they scan one another. Note how they are both squishy and slow; they are more inclined to hide than fight. Note how they are vulnerable to a GA Logi's teamwide, 21 dB, 200m, 90 degree scans (o.0). Note how the proposed new scan range leaves them well within insta-gib range of most Fine Rifles, and the AM Scout within insta-gib range of the HMG. Recon Scout builds have it rough as is; nerf them and they will become neither viable nor competitive. Their users will drop them for the GA Scout, who always seems to be on the winning side of EWAR nerfs.
TL;DR: If we take these out-of-play, we will more likely than not bolster the ranks of Assault Lite and create disproportionate usage rates among Scouts (yay more GA Scouts). |

Assaults can take on scouts despite the QQ, but they really can't take on heavies. Especially when those heavies know where they are coming from.

Plates would be fine (perhaps even good) balance-wise, but Shield Extenders, Reactive and Ferroscale should be left out of this. Otherwise, we risk reinforcing HP > All Else (bad for balance; bad for Dust). This idea scares me a little for all scouts except gallente. Without the dampening bonus minmatar and amarr scouts will have and even more difficult time avoiding scans in competitive plan and against competent squads with a gal logi. Caldari scouts will be a little less effected, but their limited low slots will create a very scannable scout if shields are used for any tank.

Isn't this basically Omniscient Installations all over again?
If they don't want me to thunderbolting hack why don't they just tell me and be done with it.
PS2 is coming out soon and maybe I can find a role there... I don't know how viable Spy Uplinks would beGǪ If you make them have Precision to beat Maxed Damped Scouts then they nullify Active Scanners, not to mention be OP as hell. I can't see how they can be made to be useful and not be OP. That is what I am saying. Is Rattati a heavy? Why are we so focused on nerfing scouts when heavies are at least as much a problem. Surely there are better ways to balance. Actually I believe that he has mentioned running Gal Heavy though I don't think that is his only suitGǪ he has also indicated that he is aware that Heavies are over performing. Nerf to heat generation of HMGs is incoming! |

I suddenly had an image of Logis kneeling to blow on the HMGs to cool them off.
1.9 Where cloaked scouts give way to tanked scouts. Problem solved?
