In other news, I recently read Pact by Wildbow.
I can never look at the term 'barber' in the same way again.
Has anyone else read it? Here's an excerpt from what it has to say on the 'barber'.
Pact, Bonds 1.7 wrote:
Barbers were once surgeons, in addition to their other roles. The red on a barberGÇÖs pole is a reference to bloodletting. Barbatorem is both, a warrior of sorts, acting with surgical precision on whatever target he is directed at. A recurring theme in earlier stories suggests that he was sent against the summonerGÇÖs enemies, almost always powerful figures, and he brought them to ruin in the worst ways. He does not seek out mischief with those who summon him, but he takes advantage if one is offered. For this reason, he is a reasonably safe entity to summon if one takes care to follow instructions. He serves as a better deleterious sending against an enemy than he does as a boon-giver. This author and three acquaintances have summoned and used him without issue.
Physically, he rends his victims, and the surgeon aspect becomes evident in how he inflicts the maximum damage possible without ever killing them, though the methods change as his form does. He will mend the damage with an expert level of care that exceeds typical modern standards, if it means keeping the victim alive. Despite the blood shed in this process, his victims typically die by other means like starvation or dehydration, unable to move under their own power or communicate a request for aid, due to a lack of limbs, missing tongue and teeth or a lack of working sensory organs, and the isolation that follows an attack.
On a more abstract level, Barbatorem deals a deeper form of damage that is hard to encapsulate in this text. Rather than state the myriad ways he might harm his victims, this author would suggest a few key points to note, suggesting the wider variety of feats he can accomplish: It is believed that he can sever his targetGÇÖs ability to access any higher plane, forever and irrevocably denying them whatever good things might await them after death.
Quote: YouGÇÖll find him waiting in the tower room, which you will need the key to enter. Staying outside the circle is first in your list of things to keep in mind, which I list here because there are no better places to put the warning. I should hope such obvious things donGÇÖt need to be stated.
Cast aside all notion of manners. Do not greet him, do not ever say please or thank him. Do not ask him if he would or could do something. Give him no food or succor. There are older meanings in these things and they will either free him or give him power over you. Sometimes it is very little power, and sometimes it is all the power he needs to achieve his ends.
Put aside all metal and reflective things before entering the tower room, and ensure the space remains dark. He exists in a more abstract capacity, whatever physical forms he takes, and if his image is cast in a surface, he will exist in that surface, allowing him to step free of that surface and the confines of the circle. For these same reasons, do not ever look directly at him, even for a moment, lest he be reflected in your eyes. Rest assured, he will not ever step free once he dwells there.
Really really ******* creepy. The tale also features a demon that obliterates things so totally that all memory of them is also lost, a creature that eats parts of people so it can torment their ghosts, and a number of other ridiculously dark things.
It's pretty damn good. It's worth reading - the same author wrote Worm, if anyone's read that too (1.8 million words! It's an epic tale indeed).

Love him or hate him, Zatara makes for an interesting CPM case study. No doubt, the next round of elections will include obviously good choices (i.e. Cross Atu, Pokey Dravon, etc) but I'm hoping we get a also few tough-to-peg ones again. Candidates which split the community made for very interesting dialogue.

Does anyone else tend to read web serials?
I was expecting most of this stuff to be terrible fanfiction level quality but some of the stuff out there is ridiculously good.
Perhaps less so for the more casual readers, though - Pact is almost twice the length of War and Peace. Worm is also 1.5x the length of the world record holder for longest published novel.

I got pissed off with Zatara once, enough to ***** about him in this thread, I immediately regretted it. I like him when he's not talking about scouts.
Those discussions Apidem posted are very interesting. I think Zatara was just misguided on the issue of stealth / scan gameplay, and he wasn't far off with his balancing ideas. It's just that some of his discussion techniques are frustrating.
I love Appia's comments on on the attacking and defensive nature of scans and damps. It still frustates me that so few people seem to understand this dynamic. |

Using no cloak when it didn't exist was completely different than it is today. Time to Kill wasn't the same. EWAR wasn't the same. (10m scan range max for almost everyone? and could you damp under that with no inner ring to worry about?)
If you forego the cloak, and brick tank, run at ennemies who see you and stab them. With HP mods you don't need to charge or leap, you can just slash at them repeatedly (as long as it's under 900 HP), it's completely valid. The time it takes you to slash twice, without stopping your sprint, is not so different from setting up a full charge to do max damage. While I encourage everyone to give this a try, 'challenging' Dreis to play this way, saying this is what a good knifer is,will only stifle his growth and make him play an "assault-lite" with a close range instant kill weapon.
Here is the other side of the coin. And I also encourage people to give this a try. This takes guts.

Hmm, I can't find the post now, but earlier someone was asking what people thought between the APEX Min and Gal scouts. Having played some more with different fittings, I have this to add:
Gal scout remains the best unaltered scout suit IMO. It just about replaces and exceeds my old 40k or so Gal Scout setup. While I really like this fit, I also find it ever so slightly boring simply because I've either been a Min or a Gal SG scout since open Beta. The suit has some good flexibility in fitting that I have not fully explored yet.
That Tiger scout though... I have to say I think it is an extremely versatile suit that I am loving changing around and doing new things with, and just general mayhem. I tossed 2x Comp Kincats, 1x Enh PG Upgrade, Nanohives, and a PLC on it. This is my new favorite hacking/sniper hunting fit. Can take out installations, tanks, snipers, etc.
The PLC might just become my new main weapon, I have to play more with it to see. Alot of snipers tend to like to either run dirt cheap suits with an expensive weapon (easy kills) or they are an extremely hp stacked suit with expensive weapons (obviously harder kills) Unless they are well and truely hidden, I can get within SG range of most snipers. I have yet to find a sniper that could withstand a shot from a PLC, whereas I have found some snipers who take 3 SG hits to take out.
And I've been trying with the PLC on hackers and snipers to get headshots, no HS +60 yet unfortunately. Still gonna try!
All this talk of the mighty scouts of old, I'm surprised no one has mentioned Bojo the Mighty. |

It's 950k words, IIRC. Not sure how many pages that translates to, but the average novel is 40k words long and War and Peace is something like 500k, for comparison.
