If they didn't want something so complex, they could just give heavies a different minimap marker which shows direction, as well as telling you it is a heavy you are scanning. Could use the old "V" (which I believe denoted newer units).

Well a random over haul idea would be 3 sets of slots. High, low, and utility. High: Shield extenders and armour reps. Low: Shield regs etc and Armour plates. Utility: Codebreakers, Dampeners, Precision, Range, Kin Cats, Damage Mods, PG/CPU mods, and the like.
e.g. Amarr Sentinel: 1 high, 4 low, 1 utility (damage mod would probably get used, or pg/cpu mod). Cal Assault: 4 high, 3 low, 3 utility. Gal Scout, 1 high, 2 low, 5 utility.
Don't confuse utility with equipment, equipment would remain it's own thing.
It would remove a lot of the blank slate customisation we have but you can't have that and not experience the min/maxing we current have.
This thought was provided directly from my butt.
We'll bang, OK?

The value used in his spreadsheet calculations is showing 15%. Sigh. I'm willing to bet range amps are some of the rarest mods used at the moment. I guess pg mods and mybos are less used, maybe shield rechargers. |

Here's the market data link: http://dust.thang.dk/market_tryhardinator.php
Scroll down to Low Slot Modules ... 25.6% - Enhanced Brick 14.6% - Basic Brick 10.9% - Complex Brick 9.6% - Enhanced Brick Rep 9.0% - Complex Reactive Brick 7.4% - Enhanced Reactive Brick 6.3% - Complex Brick Rep 5.8% - Enhanced Ferro Brick 5.8% - Basic Brick Rep 5.1% - Complex Ferro Brick
Add all that up and you get around 100% brick. All other low slot modules combined (including range amps, damps, pg mods, cpu mods, codebreakers, kincats, cardregs, shieldregs) amount to a rounding error. |

I definately like the Assault profile buff. This will allow me to hide even from Gal Logi monster proto scanners if I so desire.
But what I really don't understand is why I should need (or even EXPECT) to have a short range scan with the strength of a focused scanner, as an Assault. It does not make much sense to me.
The problem is the "lvl5 precision assaults should be able to see lvl5 profile scouts in short range" and the "scouts should only be unscannable in medium and long range scans" design principles are causing so much trouble when you try to balance precision VS range, yet I don't understand why these even should be design priciples in the first place.
WHY should a medium suit be able to see a scout suit in short range no matter what?
Countering a scout =/= make them light up on radar.
My experience is that most scouts really have a hard time when they don't see me on their radars anymore when I'm using my dampened assault suit. (And it works just fine as long as there is no Gal Logi scan monster.)
Anyway, I think I fundamentally disagree with Rattati when he wants to make it so that there are scans that are not avoidable. It should really be the other way around. If you want to stay off of the radar you should be able to do so with the proper fitting, even as a medium suit.
I've said it twice and I will say it again: Getting scanned should be a penalty for stacking HP, not the natural state of everything but scouts.
EDIT: Oh. Hi, Rattati!

I faltered on the profile punishment of precision and also the cloak buff. Too many things at once. Instead we went with a strong and tiny Short range that assaulters, will just need to cross to get into kill range. Medium range is now the "old ewar" albeit at reduced ranges so passive scans don't rule, Assault can dampen a little, and Logis can scan a little. Sentinels can choose to get under Long range scans or Precision mods to fight scouts in short, or amplify their Short to get Assaults in Medium range.
I think it will work out, with a tweak here and there.

I think it will work out, with a tweak here and there. I quite like it and I agree we will need to try it before passing judgement.
That said, there are a couple of things I doubt I will like.
Firstly i'm not sure about this very short range, very good precision area. It seems too short range to make much impact and too precise to be any longer without being too hard to avoid (read: impossible to avoid even without many precision mods being used).
I also really don't like the nerf to range amps. People hardly use them as it is. I know they will be helped by the general increases to base scan range, but I just don't see anyone using them in 1.10.
I understand why this has been done, to prevent the monster PC scans that we would see with the original "final" proposal, and I'm glad we won't be moving into permascan 514, but yeah, I agree it will probably need tweaking.
Personally I think if you gave range amps a 10-20% penalty to precision you could keep them at a 45% bonus, for example. |

Forgot, worried about removal of direction arrows as well, mainly in relation to heavies. I get that it was deemed too powerful, but heavies are also pretty powerful and EWAR is an important weakness.
How about giving heavies their own special minimap icon that does show direction, and leave mediums and scouts without a direction.
Or Gav's slightly more complex idea of tying direction arrows to the difference between profile and precision. If you scan something well enough you get an arrow. |

I understand why this has been done...
I suspect the why may have more to do with Rattati being told "we can't turn off passive scans" ... so he's found a way to minimize their effect instead.

I think it's more that, with the short ranged scans at the precision they are, they would be totally OP coupled with 45% range amps.
Thinking about it more, even my suggested penalties probably wouldn't help. |

Interestingly, is this the end of assault-lite?
Check out these fits:
Caldari tanked scout, 1 damp
Minmatar Ewar assault
Pretty similar I believe. With 1.10 they will have identical EWAR. They have similar regen, speed, weaponry and stamina.
Assault has slightly more hp.
The scout has more flexibility to fit equipment with the extra slot, but the assault has more module flexibility.
The assault will struggle if you try to fit too much extra EWAR, whereas the scout will start to benefit more, especially with a cloak. The assault on the other hand has much more room for damage and tank if it sacrifices EWAR and regen. Biotics depends on which races you use. |

Regarding directional arrows, I think that it was probably a binary thing, much like EWAR currently is.
Gav's idea is good, but I have a feeling it can't be implemented, at least not easily enough.
