So, while running Minscout I noticed a lot of 'You have been scanned' messages. (I had no damps on, so I am not going to complain about that.)
I did however notice it made a little cluttered as the 'Standby, Triage unit in the vicinity' message would only pop up for a few milliseconds before 'You have been scanned' reappeared.
This was a problem because I could not tell how far away the nearest needle was, and especially because I could not tell if it was moving away or towards me.
So, I was thinking, what can we do to fix this little problem, it isn't the biggest, but it's irritating.
So far I have thought of a 'Status Symbol' that go into the upper right hand corner, and would be rather small, it would be green/blue if you have no been scanned, and once scanned, the message would pop up there for a few seconds and then disappear into a red icon.
Thoughts about this? Has anyone else had a problem with this?

I am also interested in the interaction between scans and cloak, specifically the chevron.
F.ex., if you have dynamic profiles, you might be active scanned, and react by crouching, thereby disappearing from the minimap. The chevron cant be there then, but there should be a way to convey your cloaked state, such as cross hair targeting etc.

Scouts Honor:
Rolling around in a Gallente basic light suit, just burning inventory and listening to the ''crack, crack, crack" of the IOP and being happy that the backup Flaylock was damaging murder taxis.
Loosing - some dudes from RND putting the hurt on my team, proto-style.
Spawned into some place where there were reds - looking for a fight and got a Minja cloaked moving about. He decloaks and I think "Okay, I won't shoot him, maybe he wants a knife fight" (I don't carry knives)
He's all like "whap, whap" melee style so I whap back and we start to bounce. Up the stairs, down the stairs, round and round and we get a few hits in each and some regen so no death.
"Oh crap, my bad dude!" - I accidentally shot b/c sometimes my controller freaks out (need to use that fix Llast posted a thousand pages back)
He shoots me so it's all in gun-style. "Shoot, me, do you, well - I shoot you!"
"No. NO! I SHOOT YOU!"
I kill him with the IOP. He spawns back and we try again, this time he gets me melee style. I send him a nice work email and I get a ty.
You're welcome dude.
Thanks for not sucking and wish I could remember your name. |

If so, it might not be a bad idea to keep it that way. The Line-of-Sight system pays no mind to profile/precision and it does not share returns with other players; Passive and Active systems do share returns with other players.
If the three systems are distinct, you could theoretically eliminate the red chevron from Active Scans like you've described (i.e. profile drops below scanner precision). A given unit could still "sniff out" a cloaked unit by hovering over him with his crosshairs; profile/precision interplay doesn't matter with LoS and the intel is not shared (this is the case today). Lastly, our "sniffer unit" could get close enough to the cloaked unit to pick him up on Passives and illuminate his position for squadmates (which is also the case today).

It might make it a little easier to escape if scanned.
A scout still wouldn't really be able to do anything whilst scanned though. A scout relies on people not knowing where you are. If you show on the minimap they still know you are there even if they can't see you straight away.
I'd rather see some other improvements to the cloak. Like a shorter delay or fainter shimmer. I'm leaning towards shorter delay as of late. |

Some time ago Aeon put up a great write up around the cloak. I liked it, however it was in a thread about EWAR and was getting lost in the other conversations. I made a separate thread and we discussed a bit. Source
Aeon Amadi wrote: Originally, CCP wanted players to be able to shoot while cloaked (I have a quote that I can link if you guys need proof) and the community shot that down in a hurry. What we got as a result was... Well, being able to shoot before the de-cloak animation even finished.
It's been said several times that the Shotgun isn't what's over-powered and it's not, it was hardly ever changed since it's inception. What did change however is the Scouts, more importantly the implementation of the cloaking device. Which isn't bad, but the way the CPM 0 wanted the cloaking device to work was for movement from point a to point b. Not predator / 'gotcha' kills. Rightfully so as the entire gameplay mechanic is **** poor, annoying, and silly.
Cloaking is also a nice subject of debate. Judge Rhadamanthus (sp?) brought up the Toupee Fallacy:
"The arguer claims that they can always recognize when something is present. This is likely a fallacy because the arguer is not aware of all of the times that he/she did not recognize it."
The same applies to cloaking. How could you ever know of the times you -DID NOT- see a cloaked scout if the entire premise is that you did not see them?
That being said, we have to consider the factor that the cloaking device was, by the CPM 0 standards, meant for movement and not combat. So the exact contradiction is that cloaking devices are more powerful, visually, when standing still as opposed to moving. I think we could honestly reverse that to discourage camping by making them glow a brighter blue shade (more obvious) when holding still and the cloak being more powerful (perfect invisibility) when moving.
Now, hold your horses because I realize that this sounds contrary to a 'nerf' toward Scouts. The reason being for this change would be to open up more opportunities to hit the de-cloak harshly. Talking several seconds before the user can pull their weapon and begin firing. This way, we encourage the cloaking device for low-profile movement while at the same time encouraging more critical thinking on the Scout's behalf. It would encourage players to want to decloak -BEFORE- entering combat zones instead of making themselves vulnerable when they're already within the optimal range of their shotgun. Or as Arkena Wyrnspire put it, "the spleen removal zone".
Just my 0.02 ISK
Edit: What Aeon proposed here was a reduction to shimmer to make the cloak as a movement tool and not a combat tool. Essentially we are about half way there. The cloak had combat ability stripped from it, but it did not receive anything to make it a movement tool. Also the Damp bonus was turned down which actually moved it further from a tactical tool.

Make the cloak into a perfect visual camouflage.
Literally invisible standing still.
Barely distorted moving.
Largely distorted sprinting (But still less visible than it is right now).
Buff total charge, increase drain with speed. Skill provides recharge bonus.
Weapons CANNOT be fired from cloak. You must MANUALLY deactivate it (Which then requires you to switch weapons.)
You can keep the decloak and cloak sounds. Knowing that someone is around is healthy, but they still don't know where you are.
Scouts can couple this cloak with proper dampening to become VERY hard to pin down without powerful scans. If a large force is moving through, they can stand still and keep cloaked long enough for them to pass. Right now, if you have the misfortune of having a large group run by you, you HAVE to risk running it. They very well might stick around longer than your charge. New changes make it easier to slowly and carefully maneuver away from danger.
While I have my wishlist out:
Buff scan range modules. I want meaningful passive scans again on scouts.
Cloaking reduces scan range by 100%. I wish I could underline this twice. Its an escape and movement tool. Not an observation one (At least outside of comm chatter).
Not sure about the numbers, but I would like 2x precision scouts to be able to pick up most scouts in the inner ring again (not sure about the range on that). Would make it useful to carry a Cal scout around to sniff out cloaked damped scouts again.
I'm trying to tailor these to make sure the follow happens:
A.) Cloaks are properly used escape and infiltration tools
B.) Re-introduction of useful eWAR without going back to permascan days.
C.) Giving incentive to upgrade cloak to 5 and use it on scouts again.
I'll be honest. I don't run the cloak anymore. At all.
I run uplinks and RE's.
Because cloaks won't keep you alive (Against smart opponents), and the team can use my uplinks and RE's even when I'm dead.
Ghost out.
EDIT:
Oh, and fluxes disable cloaks.
That is all.

It needs to be changed so that messages don't overlap.. This is part of a bigger issue with the HUD needing improvements... i.e. constant orbital notifications instead of icons indicating which OB's you can do currently.
There have been some great HUD suggestions in the feedback area sadly no dev responses on them. |
