Stupid aliens.
So ...there's the original XCOM "Something" which I did not read, but have friend who tell me it fantastic! ... Then there's the first PS3 release XCOM "Enemy Unknown" ... Then there's the current XCOM "Enemy Within" ...
The last iteration is alot like the second, but it introduced a new currency, tweaked the story line a 'bit, and added mechs and augmentations (e.g. deus ex limb clinic). My A-Team's been through the tubes a few times, but neural dampening was first on my list for the very reason outline above. The only thing worse than losing one of your favorite guys, is losing one of your favorite guys because he went batsh*t and shot-and-killed your other favorite guys.
Less of that in "Enemy Within" ... other cool stuff as well ... well worth the $20 IMHO.

My current A-Team's been through the tubes a few times, but "neural dampening" was first on my list for the very reason outlined above. I played the first PS3 version, got all p*ssed off b/c mind control and quit. The only thing worse than losing one of your favorite guys, is losing one of your favorite guys because he went batsh*t, shot-and-killed your other favorite guys, and did it over and over again every time you reloaded. Good news is there's less of that particular flavor of heartbreak in "Enemy Within" thanks to neural dampening ... and there's lots of other cool new stuff as well ... worth the $20 IMHO. My secret ... straight up f*cking cowardice :-) I don't research the Hyperwave Communicator until I'm good and ready.
See it just wouldn't feel right playing a Firaxis game on anything but PC. I'm just like that for some games, Skyrim was a "must play on PC" game for me as well, as was FO3 and FO4 will be.
I never really found the Mind Control thing to be so much of a problem, I've killed a couple of my own guys because of it though, I think also you can crit them into unconsciousness and then stablise them. Though I never really bothered with trying to mind control the aliens either.
New topic: Has anybody else got a straight up boner for No Man's Sky?

A) I have issues shooting at my own people. I don't like to do it. It feels like such a waste.
B) I am perhaps over hyped for No Mans Sky. I think I need to come down off of it because I am scared that I will set my expectations so high that it would be impossible for it to live up to them. Otherwise, love everything about it.

I wonder if the couriers have even found you, yet. You may be a construct at this point, but at least having "someone", or the idea of "someone" to share this with seems to help with my sanity. I wouldn't be the first orc to lose his sh*t and start feeding the stereotypes.
The dead walk, as I've said, but there's a ton of coin down in those old ruined barrows.
I made my way to Whiterun and spoke to the Jarl. Surprisingly easy to get within arm's length of the man. His captain, this "Irileth", is either very foolish or very capable of defending him from any threats. She's a bit abrasive, but I like her. Not bad, for an elf. Anyway, I'm not in Dragonsreach - the keep at Whiterun - long before a guard runs in with a report of a dragon sighting at the western watch tower. Irileth gathers some soldiers and I meet the lot of them at the outpost.
It was in ruins. Dead scattered all about, the flames hazing the sky with thick black smoke. And then it Shouted. Mirmulnir. He seemed to glory in calling his own name. I'm not much for archin', so I didn't land a single arrow. But when the beast alit, I charged him with the fancy, lightning-imbued hammer I found at Bleak Falls Barrow and put a swift end to his savagery. As he fell, he screamed "Dovakhin! No!" I don't know what it meant.
As I began to pick apart the carcass for useful scraps of bone and scale, something... strange... happened. I don't even want to get into it. Then on the way back to Whiterun, that same word, Dovakhin, thundered across the tundra. The ground shook with the force of the Shout. I think something is calling me...
But I need more gold. I think I'm gonna join the Companions.

Crap I remember that - I played that Dune on PC. I remember Warcraft 2 (not WoW) being around at the time, and I thought they were both very similar games. Not big on RTS so didn't get far with it. There was a Dune game I played (and actually completed) on the Amiga. You had to make Paul's eyes turn completely blue or something - there was like a mirror you could look into to see how that was coming along lol. That and covering the entire planet in grass from the hidden water caches.
Thanks for the recipe!!

I took my girlfriend for a late-night picnic; we picked up some nice designer coffees and pastries at a trendy little shop called Cosi and then walked a few blocks to a little-known spot here in Philly called Drexel Park. It's on the Drexel U. campus and sits a little above the river with an awesome view of the Philadelphia skyline, with these artistic benches... very nice, very romantic.
It came to mind because of the 'tasty and light' thing. This, combined with a new experience (for both of us, i'd heard about the spot but never been there) made for an excellent night and memory :)
Just asked the wife if she'd heard of Drexel Park (she lived in Philly for ages before I dragged her to the UK). She said that that is near where she heard her first automatic weapon.

Saw it many times.. and would always watch again! Awesome film.. Harrison Ford at his peak.
I also read the book :D Way good. I read quite a few of his books. He was a cool nutcase, that Philip.
Did you watch the Battlestar Galactica remakes? If so, did you recognise Admiral Adama?
Dear Matti
Nothing much to report really. Bumped into Aela the Huntress outside Whiterun - she has these warpaint sort of markings on her face and she seems kind of hot, although it might just be the leather. I saw her and her mate fighting a giant and went running to help, but they killed it just as I got into melee range. She made some snarky comment about me not jumping in to help - pssshhh whatever face-paint girl. She's a member of some outfit called The Companions, and she said I should seek out some guy named "Codlack" if I want to join. Codlack? Dubious name for a leader if you ask me.
The highlight of the day was nothing to do with game play. I stumbled across a mod for making unread books glow different colours in the Steam Workshop. I remembered how much of a dull meta-game reading all the things is, so I proceeded to download it. Then I found I needed to use some sksu launcher app. to launch the game with, and I also installed a SkyUI mod too. It's remarkably easy to install these things - pretty amazing how they make it easy to have someone else make a mod for the game and make it accessible to others. Anyway the SkyUI interface is awesome - and glowing books? Wow. The interface is sooo much nicer to use now.
Apart from thinking Arnold Schwarzenegger got cloned one too many times every time I talk to a city guard in Whiterun, nothing else much to tell short of meeting the Jarl's wizard who has lots of spell books I might buy off him if I manage to get some moola together.
Hmmm....I think I want to be good at spells and decent with one-handed swords.

New topic: Has anybody else got a straight up boner for No Man's Sky? I see what you mean with firaxis games, but Xcom just works so well. Plus, I picked up enemy within for Gé¼8. Any first person game is just intolerable for me on PC. Can't stand it.
I've not really had much issue with mind controlling either. I think being aggressive helps, also making sure to keep your men together. Once one is in range to be controlled, the others tend to be able to shoot the controller. Also I once got a psychic with just over 120 will, so she was able to mind control etherreals without much effort.
On No Man's: I wouldn't say boner, but I'm hugely looking forward to it.

Well, first of all they looked beautiful, all done up, etc. Then I was like hey what's up to one, and my god the accent, mouth, and brutality of her. I was like nope! no way am I in her league lol. edited to make swear words come through for clarity's sake Ah, yes. The accent. How long did it take you to figure out wtf "wooder" meant? lol

I had a new experience in DUST today. I actively chose the Plasma Cannon because it was the most optimal weapon for a map. ******* heavies. I need a working Breach Shotgun, which I do have, in the form of the Allotek Plasma Cannon.
I'm still a bit surprised that heavies aren't calling for a PLC nerf, I killed so many of them with it today

Dark Souls 2 time with the Spade. I'm just digging here, they're walking into the graves.
The journey through the castle is far longer than I could've imagined. As I walk down the bridge these...statues, towering statues, came to life. These elephant men were imposing, but far too clumsy to be any real threat. Hollow soldiers greet me at the door of the castle, nothing to worry about here. As I enter I see a faint glimmer at the top of a stair case. Approaching it, I here a voice, asking me my business. It tells me it's the King's Chancellor. Poor soul, he doesn't seem to realise what's happened. Souls...a funny thing. It feels like an addiction now, as if I'm merely gathering them to become stronger to gather even more. Is this the curse taking it's toll? Or my own lust for power?
Regardless, I must press on. I descend the staircase and head behind it, discovering a passageway with what appears to have been the King's Royal Knights. Driven mad, like everything else in this land. after slaying them I descend a ladder, pass through 2 sets of blue doors to another bonfire. Moving back from the bonfire, I take a right turn to reveal a room full of statues. As I walk to the centre, all 12 of them rise to their feet. This is unlike any sorcery I've encountered before. Due to their numbers, I endeavour to keep them at a distance with my halberd. A single hit could prove fatal when followed up by the others. As I pick them off one by one, the doors start to open, which reveal Sentinels like I had encountered some days ago. Five of them rush out, but thanks to my huge shield they're left staggered as they hit, giving me the opportunity to eliminate them.
Past this room is a staircase which leads me up to the battlements of the castle. The crossbowmen are as hospitable as ever. I come to a room with three more Knights and a curious painting. I felt a dark energy off it. As I continued out and up a stairs I felt something...a presence. I turn and repel a would be attacker. Not willing to tolerate this assassination attempt, I equip both my Caestus and paint the floor an interesting colour I like to call Hint of Brain. I continue up the stairs and come face to face with a woman calling herself the Queen. But I can feel it, her presence is not that of a human. She tells me to go to Vendrick. Being unable to reach her, I press on past a misty door to stare down two Dragonriders.
One on one, they're trivial, but with two of them I must make sure not to expose myself. To this end I equip my Cestus as I can attack quickly and defend myself. As they so clearly telegraph their every move, I dispatch them without much effort. Pressing on I encounter some kind of elevator, however it is raised and the lever is stuck. A door is ahead, but it requires a key which I do not have. Having no other option, I climb a ladder to the side. More living statues greet me, along with a golem that seems to feed off their souls when I slay them. The golem moves, activating a device which lowers the elevator. But the way back is blocked. I open a door into a grand hallway. Several Royal Knights at ground level with archers on the balcony. I rid myself of archers first and then the Knights. Afterwards I open a door to the outside and see two more Elephant men along with archers above them. Nothing but an annoyance. Past this is a stairwell which loops back around to the elevator.
I ascend to discover a woman trapped behind a door with some kind of creature tied to the door. Nothing I can do will shift it, so the woman remains there. In a chest I find a key to the locked door at the bottom of the elevator. Through the door I discover a bridge called The Kings Passage. Yet more statues arise to face me. At the end of this bridge is another misty door. Past it is a large Knight with a curious shield and long sword.
I come to blows with it, blocking and dodging whilst getting my own hits in. I find my sword to be the most effective in this situation. We battle for a time when he rests his shield on the ground. I see something in it, a person, trying to escape. Whatever it is, it breaks free from the shield and immediately targets me. It's huge Greatsword fails to penetrate my shield and I send it back from whence it came. This knight must die before he tries that again. Seeing a great opportunity, I charge and stab the sword straight through the heart. Or at least where the heart should be. Either way, the knight is no more.
I shall continue my journey another day, I am not yet ready to descend into the gaping hole before me.
