I'm not really a book critic (not saying you are), I just don't pick up on **** writing or whether "character development" is any good. I like all the books, I think what, ten by Frank and another five or so by Brian and Kevin J. And the films. I guess I'm a fanboi ;-)
Have had a few meat-on-sticks from different places, but for me, a good souvlaki can't be beat. Make my own using pork tenderloin; will share the recipe if anyone's interested.
I really should give the series another chance. I was captivated by the original, start to finish. For me, the others I've tried so far (Children of Dune, Dune Messiah, Paul of Dune) lacked the "finished" quality of the first; they struck me more as episodic than epic.

For me, the others -- at least the ones I've tried so far (Children of Dune, Dune Messiah, Paul of Dune) -- have lacked the "finished" quality of the first; they struck me more as episodic than epic. Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed them (specifically, moments of them) but I wouldn't recommend them as "must reads" to friends.
I tried to read Dune when I was about 10. I couldn't get into it - too young to really get it I think. From back then I can remember the bits in italics in between paragraphs and chapters etc. It was really hard to read. When I picked it up again years later, it was amazing.
Then the preludes - wow. I can't remember if those are Frank or Brian....in fact I just turned my head 90 degrees and can see House Harkonnen sitting on my bookcase by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson....so yeah. I think I really enjoyed those because it filled in the back stories. House Corinno, House Harkonnen and House Atreides. Again, the nostalgia ;-)
Doh! I meant souvlaki lol. Not shawarma (although shawarma I have had too and is darn nice). Appia confused me when she mentioned it. Do share your recipe!

I hate Greek food. That's not entirely true, but out here in the Chicago-area all Mediterranean places are supplied by a company called "Kronos" or "Kronos foods inc." They serve naan pita bread and I just loathe it.
lol, on PC none of these problems exist. Of course, I could run Oblivion on maximum settings when that game came out. I can't even run Skyrim on minimum setting on my PC

I don't suppose you're able to lower the settings any on PS3? I've never played it on console.
As to Orcs being literate, The Gourmet is an Orc and he wrote a book I've always seen Orcs, at least ever since WoW, as being much less bestial than their reputation suggests; a victim of ignorance on the part of the so-called "goodly" races who can't see past their rough, warty skin and sharp, oft-broken tusks to deal with the intelligence behind the angry-looking eyes (I'm not angry, this is how my face is shaped!). Dear Diary, I found out why I was in chains today. Turns out I was crossing the boarder into Skyrim, which is illegal. I am still not yet sure why I would come here and the events leading up to this voyage is still blurry, last thing I remember was walking into an inn in Alinor.
Well, maybe I'll find out more later. Either way, I was messing around earlier today and I accidentally burned a chicken to death. Apparently this was the town's chicken and everyone got all up in arms about it. Not only that, but for killing this 5g chicken I've been fined 40g on top of it.
At least I know there's a Thalamar embassy somewhere. After I inform some people about the dragon I'm going to try going there and finding a way home.

Dear Llast,
Remember I told you about Uncle Alvor, that Imperial flunky's blacksmith uncle? Well, he's talkin' a good line about "take whatever ya need, within reason." Apparently, 'reason' doesn't include decent kit or materials to smith m'own. Seriously, these imperial duds are just that - duds. I feel like a newborn babe wearing this junk. And I think the Empire's men robbed me when they put me in that cart, 'cause I got nothin' but the few coins uncle Alvor had to offer.
Fortunately, the shopkeep here in Riverwood had recently been robbed and, even if it wasn't great, I had a serviceable axe. So I slogged up the hill to this Bleak Falls Barrow place and sorted those bandits out in a hurry. Stupid humans... wearing furs and toting iron, thinking themselves unassailable just because fools like that Hadvar are scared of the imposing architecture. I'll say this, though - they were doin' well for themselves. I found a good deal of gold on their corpses.
When I found the ringleader, he was wrapped up in some giant frostbite spider's webbing, beggin' for help. He said he'd give me the shopkeep's heirloom if I just cut 'im down. So I did. I cut 'im down and then I cut 'im down. Rummaging through his crap, I found the golden claw with some strange markings on it... and a journal. Detailing how the claw was some manner of key. "Well," I think to myself, "I'm here now... might as well check this out."
The dead walk. Dozens of them. I had to fight my way through the huge underground complex of crypts to find the door with the lock the claw was supposed to open... and inside, far in the back of a rough-hewn cave, I found a strange, smoothly curved wall with a lot of old glyphs carved into it. Most of it was too badly marred to make anything of it, but as I approached, I felt a strange pulling... I could hear some otherworldly whispering and my one good eye seemed to get all blurry - except for when I looked at one area of the carvings. It was a little scary... but suddenly, the dawning of understanding struck me like the warhammer I'd just pulled out of a chest in the cave. It was a word! ...a word like the dragons shout.
And I understood it.
But it feels like something's... missing. Like I am not all I am supposed to be. I do not have the right to shout this word, yet. But I also feel that, when I find what it is I'm lacking... when I am able to shout.... to Shout... all men would do well to tread lightly in my view.

One of my favorite (and most successful) dates:
I took my girlfriend for a late-night picnic; we picked up some nice designer coffees and pastries at a trendy little shop called Cosi and then walked a few blocks to a little-known spot here in Philly called Drexel Park. It's on the Drexel U. campus and sits a little above the river with an awesome view of the Philadelphia skyline, with these artistic benches... very nice, very romantic.
It came to mind because of the 'tasty and light' thing. This, combined with a new experience (for both of us, i'd heard about the spot but never been there) made for an excellent night and memory :)

Dark Souls 2 time with the Spade. Now with a main character
I have just defeated the Smelter Demon, a most fearsome enemy. But now I must press on. I continue on my path when I encounter two club wielding creatures that look rather like turtles due to their armour. I block and dodge their attacks, killing them with punches to the back. Childs play. Continuing to the next room, I see lava where there should be a floor. To my right is a lever, which I activate causing two more turtle-men to fall to a fiery death. Just behind me I notice a door. I open it to find one of Pharros' contraptions. I activate it and it reveals a bonfire. Curious isn't it, how soothing a flame can be.
Right next to the bonfire is a ladder. I climb it and find a madman, raving on about protecting a bell. Ignoring him, I leave and encounter more like minded lunatics of short stature. I make short work of them with my trusty sword and discover a lever. I pull it to ring a bell, the bell it seems they were protecting. I have no idea what it does, but at that moment I felt it, phantoms have come for me. Two of them appear, a magic wielder and a swordsman. I rush the magic wielder, as he's the threat while the other merely bounces off my shield. A short punch to the face incapacitated him, leaving him to my mercy. I beat him down. With him out of the way, I turn my gaze to the swordsman, who had previously tried and failed to back stab me. I use the halberds superior range to cut him down.
The path had looped back around, leaving me in the room with the lava. It almost looked like some kind of massive forge. I carefully make my way across the perilous walkways, activating mechanisms to send the knights to their doom as I go. Yet another turtle-man rushes me, failing to account for a fire spout which burned it to a crisp. I traverse through a mist to discover a tall cylindrical room, with yet more lava below. As I take in what I see, an attempted ambush fails as a knight jumps to a fiery grave. Stupid hollows. I continue down a narrow hallway, I grow tiresome of these turtles, but 2 more await me until I come to a room of fire breathing statues. Navigating my way through I'm greeted by an open expanse of lava with a path through it. At the end of the path is a misty door. This is it. The soul I seek is here.
In preparation I apply a dark power to my Cestus. I enter and I see him, The Old Iron King. If this was once a man, it hasn't been for a long time. It's now nothing but a horned demon filled of hate. Dodging it's mighty blows and blocking the scorching fire is a task on it's own, but I manage to wear the creature down with my punches. The 3rd old one is defeated. Only one remains, and it's at the bottom of that wretched hole.
Travelling back to Majula I negotiate with the laddermaker to descend down the hole. 12000 souls it cost me, steep, but necessary. At the bottom are these exploding undead. Nuisances the lot of them. I wade through the water to reach The Gutter. A vile, disgusting, toxic valley. A torch is necessary here, and these structures twist and wind all over the place. I navigate through and descend further to The Black Gulch. An even more toxic place full of horrid statues. A short journey until the end of this area.
I enter the misty door and see it. The Rotten. A disgusting mass of flesh. It moves as one, but the bodies sticking out move independently, as if trying to escape. All but one, at the top left shoulder. It's almost as if that one was directing the mass, controlling it. Nevertheless, the vile beast must be cut down, and I am more than happy to oblige. With my firery halberd, I keep out of the lash of the butchers knife and attack. A tough foe, but susceptible to my blade. After some time, the right arm comes clean off, making it far easier to finish him now that the knife is out of play. For one last attack, I charge the beast, stabbing it in the mouth as it lowers to attack. The final Old One is defeated.
And so I travel. I can feel my journey coming to an end. I hope this message helps whoever may find it. The bridge to the castle is in sight, but now I must rest. Tomorrow though, tomorrow I march upon Drangleic Castle. Tomorrow I shall break the curse. Tomorrow, I regain my humanity.
~Balathor.

So, what I'm attempting to do here is only use Magic. I was going to say, "only use fire spells" but there are just too many things resistant to fire. I was also going to try playing on Legendary, but nothing took damage from magic so I had to scale down to Master.
Dear diary, ****. ****, ****, ****.
What the hell is this place!?
I made it to Dragonsreach and told the yarl about the dragon. He tried to entroduce me to his court wiziard. Ugh! The audacity of such a pathetic human to address me like that! "Minial tasks are more suited for you." I swear I will go back and kill that little runt one day!
Unfortunately that may happen sooner than I'd like. I tried to make my way to the Embassy, but I ran into giants and mammoths. I was a bit full of myself and tried to burn a mammoth down. It did not acquiesce to my demands. It stood there, seemingly unaffected by the flames! Their masters decided to join them in chase of me. I had to run all the way up a mountain to get away! But as soon as I was clear of any danger they could pose I found myself face to face with 3 trolls. . . I was not prepared for so many creatures to just ignore my magicks. I ran away as fast as I could. This place is terrible!
I just want to go home! *there appear stains in the page from water* I couldn't even find the embassy. I got turned around somewhere. I'm just lucky I found some mudcrabs. Disgusting little things, but I needed something to eat. I ran across these hookers horkers, they seemed invincible as well but I found a way to whittle them down. Finally. Something that would burn.
I felt like some sort of savage. Fitting for where I was. I wondered around, finding more horkers and killing them until I finally saw a spark of civilization. Sadly it was not the burning light of a city, but the ruins of an old town. Fortunately, this was also the place of the College.
Finding my skills to be working less effectively in this vast realm of nothing, I decided I might stay here a while till I could fend for myself.
I find it fortunate, in small part, that I at least get to sleep in a real bed tonight.

Way back when it first came out I did this, put myself, girlfriend and a bunch of friends in it. On an abduction mission I moved myself down an alley, turn ends and 3 floaters burst through a door and surround me on all sides. I kill one, my girlfriend comes bursting through a doorway and shotguns one out of the air and my best friend snipes the third one from across the map.
I tend to role play a bit. I order soldiers in sets of 10-15. So all these noobs show up and have to be trained by the vets, the senior soldiers get their own colours and armour sets. When the vets die one of the noobs has to step up and take on the mantle/colours etc (big shoes to fill and all that).
On another play through on a terror mission I moved my 2nd to last guy, a sniper I was dashing to catch up, it revealed 1 extra square of map... ONE!
It set off a Cyberdisc and 5 ******* Chryssalids inside a building. It was two of the "pods" (enemy clusters) at the same time. I have one soldier, a heavy. ****, well they didnt really move far when I set them off they're all still clustered, I guess I'll use my rocket. He pulls it out and lines up a shot, fantastic I can hit most of them...But there in the middle. A civilian woman, terrified out of her mind. She was in the dead centre of the cluster, the rocket would have to hit her. Well reluctantly he fired his rocket, killing her and a very good chunk of the aliens, pretty much saved the squad and a bunch of civilians. Later that heavy died on a crash mission, protecting 4 noob/low level soldiers I was trying to level up. He took on a god damn Sectopod solo to save their asses. I like to think he had been hoping for a repentant death, for that poor woman.
We'll bang, OK?

I was such an angry little teenager. Now that anger only exists when dealing with FPS games, lol, maturity. Yup, decided I'd put my mate into my Xcom game a few months ago. Found an Irish bloke with pretty good aim and will, so I made it look as much like him as I could given the constraints, changed the armour and named him. First deployment he gets headshotted by a thin man half-way across the map.

I really like XCOM but kept getting stonewalled every time I got to the psychic aliens. They always turned one of my guys, who I never wanted to kill, and I could never develop the technology fast enough to prevent.
Stupid aliens.

I didn't realize space ships could be circumcised.

Stupid aliens. Psychic aliens are strictly plot based for first time appearances., so you can basically choose your tech level when they show up.

I guess I thought there was a technology or some other skill, for lack of a better word, that I could level up and prevent them from taking over my soldiers' brains.

Gene mods and mind shields (if you have enemy within) do the job. But you need to encounter them first. Plasma sniper rifles also work.
