I hate to say it, but similar things happened to me when I was first learning the ways of the cloak.
Once someone was kind of wary, and I didn't want to move for fear of death, and as he was going by me, turned and gunned me down.
I have long since learned my lesson. If I am going to die, I am going knives swinging.
