Pretty much this. I finished main quest without companions. Got revived, went to Megaton, got distress signal from Vault 101, helped out, eventually found Butch and then it was 2 Tunnel Snakes.

I took companions, but if they died I just left it at that and continued on.
Dogmeat died saving my life in the assault on the purifier.

Everyone can get under the mid range scans with some effort, but no one can beat the short range ones, on a number of frames.
I think it only takes 1 Precision on a medium frame to have the unbeatable inner rings.
Heavies can have them if they wish, it just might not be very helpful.

One thing i DO appreciate about medium suits scans (tho i still think its stupid) is that i learned to rely less on charging straight into the fray & more on tactics.
