Sinboto Simmons wrote:Ghost Kaisar wrote:KDR is a good statistic when determining the skill of a player though. I use it all the time when processing apps for FA. Long story short: You want a good KDA for PC. Not dying is half the game, the other half is killing the other team. 2.0 is efficient, it means that you are worth 2 players on average (Since the ideal average K/D is 1.0). Cross reference with WP per week and W/L and you can sum up just how much of a "Team Player" an application is. You also check monthly totals as well, mainly to check activity. Right now, I look for people with 2.0 K/D+ and a good W/L ratio. This typically means that they can carry their own weight, and know how to win games (Which typically means they are squadding with others). Obsessing over K/D is bad, but its still a decent statistic to be familiar with. For those who are wondering, my weekly is at 3.12ish I know what you're saying, been in STB for four years now, the big difference between us and other corps of the time was the the 'anyone can apply, as long as you're willing to learn' mentality. This opened the corp to many new players, and I know for a fact that many great vets, here and gone, were made into fps ass whoppers not because they always were but because we taught them how to be. STB is a family that I'm proud to be apart of, we've been through much together. We raised money for a young, now old, STB's college fund. We got guys who was struggling with money back on their feet. We supported our CEO when his newborn was sick. And If it wasn't for STB I would have died, twice. That's why when I see guys being pushed away just because they're not FPS gods it makes me cringe, alot of these guys just need training, training that older players refuse to give in favour of stomping their faces in. Just my two isklets.
Yeah, but that's the difference between FA and STB.
STB is a gaming family. I've been a part of groups like that, its the game that brings people together. Sense of community is strong.
FA is well, FA. Most of us are crazy, like winning and competing, and find far too much humor in trolling each other than we should. FA was formed with the idea of being a top tier competitive corp and that's the bar for entry. If we deny your app based on K/D, its because you won't be able to PC with us and we know you probably won't like the fact that most of the corp won't play with you if you're bad (Remember the competitive and like winning part? Nobody likes dragging around a dead weight.). I don't hold it against them though, everyone who gets into FA knows what they're signing up for. Perform or GTFO. The only ones we keep that are bad are personal friends.
We do scouting too, but we don't try to pick up and teach people brand fresh new. We try to pick up those who already know how to play, and have the skills/potential to succeed. I was scouted by FA from being a nobody, and so was Frost Kitty and several others. It doesn't happen often, but we still do so. I've seen some new guys in corp that I've never played with or heard of before. I still squad with them and play with them, because they're in here for a reason. It's my job to bring them up to speed when I can.
I'm not saying that every corp or group or clan should be like this, just that they can exist as well. Every corp does not need to be made for everyone.
STB from what it sounds like, reminds me of the first gaming clan I was in. The Evil Gang was a BF1943 clan originally and spanned out over the years. Very strong sense of community, almost anyone was welcome. They're still going strong 5 years later. I've always kept my EVL tags (Check my PSN one day, or even my Steam account), because I've always felt like I should never forget those roots.
I may enjoy winning and competing far more than I did starting out, but I make a point to never let K/D or winning get in the way of having fun. Every now and then, FA goes and does goofball stuff just to have fun (Like when we all ran nothing but MLT Locus grenades. Harder to kill with than it sounds, you only get one and it's 300 damage).
Get my drift Sin? I love the fact that STB is like that, It reminds me of my first gaming clan. But not every clan needs to be like it, and having different values isn't something that you should hold against another group. Remember, Bronies probably have just as much fun at conventions as Outdoor enthusiasts. Who's to hold it against them?
EDIT: We kinda went off topic a bit. In short: For certain corps of different intentions and inclinations, K/D can be a valuable stat to track.

Agreed. What do you have in mind? Two mechanics, designed to prevent farming, but intended to reward defenders for winning raids, and secure no-shows. 1.) Add a flat ISK bonus to any clone killed in a dropsuit. That ISK bonus is equal to the CLONE VALUE. This ensures that the only time you get ISK from clones is from killing them in the fight. Any excess clones from the raid do not count towards this reward. 2.) Attacker has to front "X" ISK to attack. ISK is refunded so long as total clone deaths on one side >= 100. If not, the ISK gets split into 16 and given to defenders. This is to ensure that people who no show can't do so for free. In short: Defenders get payouts for clone destroyed, even if the opponent runs crap gear. Please note, this applies to the RAIDERS as well. More ISK for everyone involved = Happy defenders and raiders. No shows now pay the defender for their time and vigilance. The 100 clone cap is twofold effective. Raiders now have a clone limit to reach. If they don't burn through 100 clones (Which is really freaking easy to do with 16 people), they lose the ISK they fronted. So long as they burn through 100 clones, the attack is still free. Win-Win again for both sides. If the attackers no show, they lose that ISK, and the defenders get it. The 100 clone limit is to make it difficult to farm ISK. You would have to send ~6 people suiciding non-stop in the match to try and farm the ISK from it without losing the ISK yourself. Truth be told, farming might still be possible like this, so a more elegant solution might be necessary. However, if someone were to farm it, they would literally need lots of alts doing nothing but dying over and over in free suits. The effort would be real.
Honestly I dislike these two ideas. Free PC battles by CP for corps that don't have districts is a good thing. Sure there is an issue with no shows, but giving more ISK to defenders with districts is unnecessary. Many new corps would never kill 100 clones versus a good corp.
The new split what you kill is a much better reward mechanic for PC's and prevents abuse.
No showing also seems like a valid grief method :)
As it is, you do get paid DK for noshows... and maybe one day it'll be worth something.

I think you are misinterpreting.
These mechanics are for raids. If a raiding group attacks a district, they pay "X" ISK up front as "collateral". If they LOSE 100+ clones and the match, the ISK is refunded. If they win, ISK is refunded. This entices the raiders to try and cause as much damage as possible, as they need to lose 100 clones to not lose ISK. This encourages AGGRESSION from the raiders. Their goal will be to try and take down as many enemies as possible, or to win the objective match through straight body count. Both teams benefit from the extra "Clone Tax" as the defenders now get ISK for defending, even if the other team uses low level gear. The Raiders also get more ISK per clone as well. It's a win-win.
So, with these changes: Here is what happens in raids
1.) Raiders get more ISK and more incentives to try and either Win or cause as much damage as possible. If they show up and actually fight, the attack is still free.
2.) Defenders get ISK for showing up to their defense in the form of ISK for every enemy clone killed. Only clones killed in COMBAT count. They now have incentive to show up and put as many enemies down as they can.
3.) No showers now are penalized for launching attacks and not showing up. They lose the ISK collateral, which then goes to the defender, as compensation for forming and organizing for the fight without one showing up. If you're going to attack, you had better mean it.
I literally don't see how these changes could be bad, apart from possible exploits for farming. The core of the ideas are to make raids beneficial for BOTH teams if played correctly.
EDIT:
Oh, and this tidbit.

Actually I can see it as a valid tactic. Here is how. Activate Raid against corp in two places Show up to one. Defender now has to guess where to put the Ateam. Make decisions and adapt, should make for more tactical meta.

For every one stand-up guy like Ghost who wants to see better fights, there are a dozen Kain Speros. I'm of the opinion that the very last thing we should be do is make PC more comfy for those who'd farm it.
The reason Raids are low quality at the moment is because Raids are still being fought on landowner's terms. Of course the Veteran PC Elite find themselves bored by attacks like those from Jadek. Given their massive upperhand, it would be impossible for them to be anything but bored.
This is why we need true Raid mechanics.
Give low-end corps the chance to catch high-end corps off-guard or spread thin. In my opinion, giving low-end corps a shot at evening the odds is the most obvious and direct path to better fights.
