Given that the same design studio that created Dust is doing Legion how do we have any assurance that Legion will not be just as big a disaster as Dust.
The Shanghai team honestly seem to believe they know what they are doing yet we see a constant stream of horrendous game design decisions constantly appearing from this team. They have no concept of FPS basics like map design or combined arms balance.
At this point how can you convince me these lunatics are not just making Dust HD. |

I'll be honest, I really dislike the idea of having any assets transfer over into Legion.
If the plan is to have access to a player market from the very start of the game then the influx of ISK from players who've owned districts up until this point could seriously destabilize the economy. DNS as an alliance gets 1.9b ISK everyday ... yeah. Items wouldn't work for the very same reason because a person could easily stock up on any number of modules and ship them over. So, though I would prefer everyone starting on an even playing ground with both SP and Assets, if you're still planning to go with character transfers then Assets have to be absolutely left out of the picture ... or otherwise be made untradeable on the marketplace.
I urge CCP to think about the end game here, we're going to eventually want a completely unified marketplace between EVE, Valkyrie, and Legion and we should limit any potentially destabilizing aspects from the outset.
I think it goes without saying that BPOs need to be excluded from any asset transfer as well.

Specifically addressing the second point/question answered by Rouge, perhaps more of a suggestion than a question, but if you're working on Legion, why not use the work from that to implement some new things into Dust? Legion is obviously the more advanced game, sporting better graphics and much more detailed environment, but without having to look very deep, it's Dust, through and through. The tech demon could easily be recognized as Dust by anyone who has played the game, even the map shown was pulled straight from Dust and improved upon, so here's my point. Why not use some of the things, perhaps new vehicles and weapons and such, and bring them to Dust? Perhaps even new maps. I don't know if this counts as major updates, but if one game is a more polished version of the other, why not use the work done on one to improve the other? This could be used to continue testing and balancing vehicles and weapons in Dust so that when Legion drops, it will be polished and less work will need to be done to fix certain issues such as weapons behind overpowered, plus it would give the Dust players something to continue enjoy, even more so for those who don't have a PC.
I certainly hope this game comes to the PS4 as well in time and that such an introduction isn't delayed too greatly. I might be annoyed by what has been done in this case, but I still have an interest in the game and would like to enjoy it further in the future. I don't however enjoy it enough to buy a PC, and thus I look forward to seeing it on that shiny black new console of Sony's.
Also, it has been asked, but could any information be given on the business model? Will it be a subscription fee, free to play, or perhaps the usual $60's that most new games run for? I'd personally love to see a mix of purchase price and the current free to play model, subscription fees aren't exactly appealing to a lot of console gamers, myself included.
Thanks for your time.

As a long time console FPS player and having been here since the release of the pre-fanfest build 2 years ago I have to say that after much consideration this is a welcome change.
For many years I watched this game painfully never take any real positive steps toward becoming anything competitive in todays FPS market. I watched a group of 50 people that greatly anticipate this game become bitterly resentful of the complete let down even before the beta officially ended. This game had so far to go in terms of being even a playable FPS that didn't rival quake 2 mechanics that it was obvious that goal would never be realized.
I check in every once in a while to see whatever "new" gun CCP decides to add as part of an expansion when the root of what makes Dust an unplayed game was never addressed.
After much consideration I must say that I am glad that this game will now at least have the platform and cabilities to develop into something the developers dream of. Asking for PvE, Mechs, in-game economy, shooting back at eve ships were so unrealistically far off that it's ridiculous to still talk like it was only an expansion away if only CCP focused on it. It was never going to happen on PS3.
The core, the bones, the blood and guts of this game on PS3 were rancid. No amount of skins, or racial dropsuits, or quake-esque FPS gameplay mechanics would never make this into a game ten's of thousands of players would actually want to play. The community here is comprises of a couple of thousand players that weren't enough to keep this game alive.
To me its quite obvious that the hardcore population of dust that currently plays is not realized dream of CCPs ambition. They enjoy your money I'm sure although I would wager its not enough to even pay for Shanghai salaries. Dust514 on PS3 failed and switching to PC is indeed the right course of action in my opinion.
I am glad Rouge addressed the character transfer. I would be raging like a lot of people if I knew my efforts with testing this pre-alpha game were a complete waste of time and money. I hope Legion comes to fruition but I won't be giving any more money to CCP until I see something that looks like it has potential to be a sustainable and fun to play.
P.S. the amount of micro transactions is insulting. |

I have another big question.
If DUST has been abandoned for Legion, but Legion isn't certain of even existing...
...will DUST get revived with maybe a DUST 2.0 reboot if Legion is tanked? Or is it scrapped, full stop, no going back?
What I would really want to happen is for Legion to happen. PS4 preferably, since that was part of what we had always been led to believe would happen, but I'm not TOO upset with the idea of it moving to PC. But I DON'T want it to be "scrap DUST, leave it running on its own servers with just patches, release Legion as a separate game".
I want to see Legion's development INTEGRATED with DUST. Make it a gradual shift. Use the assets being developed for Legion to expand DUST over the next maybe 2 years. DON'T rush to release Legion in a year's time and cut DUST out of the picture.
Almost everyone here has been through almost a reboot with Uprising anyway. It was a MASSIVE deviation from what DUST had been prior - and not all the changes were improvements. We're still here. We can take a few disappointments if we can see that they're leading in the right direction. EVEN if one of those disappointments is the (eventual) discontinuation of our VERSION of the game for a new, better version on the next platform(s) you want to support.
If CCP continues to support DUST, instead of trying to pretend that the patches and cleanup jobs they SHOULD have done months ago while they were working on Legion are "support", then so will I. If they provide new content, EVEN if it's more limited or coming out slower because it's coming indirectly via Legion, I'll play with and against the new toys and give honest feedback on them. If there's a GRADUAL shift in focus from the current game to the "reboot", I'll be on board all the way.
If DUST is left as-is, with only the long-overdue bug fixes and balance "improvements" (hopefully ones which actually improve the game, but knowing CCP, good luck), then... Well, good luck with that. I might - MIGHT consider downloading a free client. Maybe. But I can guarantee that I will be spending a grand total of precisely NOTHING AT ALL on the game EVER, and I'm unlikely to play it regularly even if it's good. Additionally, in the rare playtime I do have, I'll be advertising the reasons WHY I'm not playing it much to those people who are interested. In the past, I've been very good at convincing players to part with money for products I like and am willing to support, and I've ALSO been very good at convincing people to NOT spend money on supporting companies I've seen behaving in an unethical manner.
As has already been said, in this thread and elsewhere, you reap what you sow.
If you upset paying customers, you might still see them PLAYING, but they won't be PAYING any more. |

Crimson more than likely Legion will be like Eve free trail then after pay to play with the option of making isk to pay for your monthly subscription. that is the most logical way for people to want to play game and ccp will introduce more updates su Gogh as you mentioned, that is why ccp stated it is only a "project". until they have a good amount of feedback then legion will be deployed and dust left in the dust. |

This... This is just stupid.
It's not like this is the first time a change in course from CCP has caused rage and drama, and it sure as &$^% won't be the last. What's sad is that it could have been different this time.
As a community, we're all on the same page with CCP about what Dust is lacking. Many of us also agree that the PS3 has started it's long slow slide to oblivion, and that investing massive resources into it is a waste. You could also probably get most of us to admit that the current Dust player base isn't big enough to justify serious ongoing investment.
Where things have gone wrong is CCP falling for one of the oldest logical fallacies in Software Engineering. When dealing with a large project that is not working, with no obvious or easy fixes, the answer that always feels easiest is to tear it down and start over.
It's also almost always the wrong answer.
Dust is broken. But it's still making money. People are playing it, and they're still paying to play it. CCP should take a page from Square Enix's successful reboot of FFXIV. For those unfamiliar, there are some real parallels between the first FFXIV's failure and Dust's current situation.
Instead of trying to keep Dust limping along on PS3 while trying to develop an entirely new game on PC, CCP should strongly consider putting Dust on life support now. Keep a couple of devs for critical balance and bug fixes, and give the community some tasty discounts to keep them paying and playing.
Use the freed-up devs to expedite a port of the then feature-frozen Dust from Unreal Engine 3 to Unreal Engine 4. Build for both PC and PS4 (as well as the XBone if MS is willing to play ball) simultaneously. It will take longer on the QA end, but if Epic has done their job properly with UE 4, the same code should run on both platforms. Doing both at once makes the Console/PC decision much less expensive in both money and time than porting later. Resist the temptation to do anything but get Dust running on the new systems.
Once Dust is playable on PS4 and PC, give PS3 Dust a Matrix Online style send-off. Instead of making people worry about their investments of time and Aurum and how they might transfer into a new game, make the PC and PS4 ports use the same character data.
Then start refactoring in all the Project Legion goodness, respeccing and resetting as needed - just like EVE's evolution.

CCP Rouge wrote:Hi everyone,
Thank you for all of your feedback so far. I'd like to answer a few of your questions about DUST 514 and Project Legion directly given the feedback you gave me. I've picked these four points as they are coming up the most on the forums as well as in the live roundtable discussions here at Fanfest.
1) What happens to my character, skills and stuff?
If Project Legion becomes something more than a prototype, we will not leave our DUST 514 players behind. You would be able to bring your character name, applicable skills/inventory, and other elements of progression with you. We are still working on the details and we will have more to announce soon.
2) Are you completely abandoning DUST dev?
No. Without promising too much, we are actively working on stuff like balancing, Planetary Conquest, matchmaking, the in-game economy, and more. And of course we continue to work with the CPM to identify ways to improve the game.
3) Is Project Legion going to have a PS4 version? Or something for consoles?
It is still far too early to discuss platform expansion, as like you saw we are still only working on the PC prototype at this time. But the PC architecture gives us the opportunity to grow once we have a great PC product at hand. For now, though, PlayStation 4 is not something we are working on.
4) When are you going to give us more concrete information on Legion?
Again, Project Legion is still in an early stage of development but the whole idea behind giving a sneak peek at Fanfest is to get early feedback - and I really want to keep this discussion going, show you progress through dev blogs and such and listen to what you have to say.
Please post your feedback and questions in this thread - and let's keep this conversation going. The team and I will be reading this thread, and I will respond as soon as I can.

In response to #2, you had a full team to work on Dust, failed miserably to attempt any new material over the course of the last year and now tell us that devs have been working on Legion for months, why should we believe you when you say that there is actual work going into the game? The full team couldn't even finish off the weapons, vehicles and dropsuits until 1.8 (vehicles? who knows when). Now with likely less than half a team working on it and a total of likely around 40 million dollars from Sony pissed away you expect to make it better with a small cadre of people?
In response to #4, until you can say plan to have a computer with X specs to run the game on Y date no one here wants to hear about project legion and is still feeling jilted about not getting a DUST 514 keynote speech, don't laugh at us, some of us still believe in CCP (very few from what I can tell). You already have a whole forum section filled with the ideas of people who have been around since closed beta and you still don't understand what we think? Maybe Bungie can do a better job on Destiny (cross platform) than CCP.

Rouge, my feed back is ultimately positive but you missed a key element which your team as a whole needs to work on. My initial reaction to legion was shock, confusion, numbness, panic, excitement, dread and most of all fear about what was happening. The lead up to fan fest was a lot of excitement about dust 514 which, let's be honest, was about legion. Most players responded as I did because this was out of the blue and completely took us by surprise. There needs to be more communication from you guys, Dev blogs are great if they come out frequently with updates about where you are on the road map, or even points on the road map you have achieved. Sharing challenges you face would be nice, doesn't have to go too deep into detail but tell us you have hit a road block on X and that point Y on the road map is really being looked into to unblock X. Just talk to us! Be as casual as you can, you seem to have a good bearing on the vision of legion and that's great! If your more open with us we might find it easier to support you and give good feedback. As you said in your op let's get this conversation going, both parties must have dialogs for this to work
The demo of legion is awesome, looks amazing, great ui, and awesome immersion! With features like pve, player market, and more sand (plus burning trees) Thank you for not leaving the core dust group in...well...the dust. Allowing us to bring over our characters and skills was one of two deal breakers for me and I'm very happy you addressed that first! The other is to keep it free to play!
Now let me be the first to ask, will there be dropships in legion? If so then will it be comparable with a joy stick? If no, FOR DUSTS SAKE WHY?!!!
After getting over the initial shock of the poor timing to release info on legion, I see its a potentially good move. Seriously though, learn from this, be more transperant with us. |

I cant believe that when in closed beta when we voiced our concerns about you guys using the Unreal engine the first place you continued to use it and stated it would be easier to port. I think Microsoft new your game wasnt ready and they washed there hands clean of your concept and SCEA just took pity on you or maybe dupes them as well. You told SCEA at E3 your plans to port to PS4 and they announced it. When Pretorian defended that there were 80 miliion PS3 in service you quieted the community by telling us you would continue to support this platform. When I and others knew SCEA would stop PSN support next year. We knew but you used your minions to lie.
Pretorian knew then, when he was asked the question. The dev for this game has been slow because you guys always planned this.He had been working on this and dividing resources for how long ? But we know the answer. Why use console players as revenue to develope a PC game and then act like that 's ok. Why make all these public claims about being the first gaming company to dev a a cross platform game bringing console players into New Eden. To be apart that.an you failed at that btw . A chat box is not cross platform. I open another tab in my browser and can chat with someone while playing a game.
The fact that we were never even on the same forums was a sign. I just dont understand the deception.
Your main selling point of this game was that all DL future content was going to f2p and that your character would carry on. How delusional can you be that you think the PC version with a different name will be better than DUST? Do you really think that this game DUST 514/ Legion beta will actually be confused as being a different game which it is not . DUST has already been tried by those of us that enjoy the genre. It has already been rated by all the game magazines. Do you really think .deep down people will be fooled into thinking this is some other game? You are about to halve your peakk 2.5k player base and move to another platform.
I also have alot of trouble wondering how in the hell someone from EA could fathom such an idea as only pushing a game on 1 platform. When BF3 was on all 3. Why limit yourselves? How in the **** did you get so lost ? Why are you going backwards?

Pointing out the obvious
First Off this was the smoking gun of the whole presentation and should have been said there. You would, not have only avoided the whole sh*t storm that the **Legion Keynote** created but, would have created a whole lot of excitement for the product. This product could have also been, if legally possible, sold as an upgrade to the DUST universe making it something the dust community could look forward to instead of dreading it's existence knowing the game they love is going to be replaced by it.
Feedback
Apart from that, There is a key word in the above statement that I do not think the community will be happy with. Applicable should not only be skillpoints attributed to the transferred character. The applicable skills should be put directly into the skill tree and any other skillpoints left over should be put into the the SP POOL for the player to distribute as he sees fit A.K.A. "redistributable"
Removal of learning skills in EvE online
Quote: ALL LEARNING SKILLS WILL DISAPPEAR
We're not kidding. In your head, in your hangar or in your anything else, they're gone. Vamoosh. Deleted. Sent to the big recycle bin in the sky. Etc etc.
All skillpoints invested in learning skills will be reimbursed, including all the fiddly corner cases. If you have 2,012,692 SP in learning, you will find yourself down those skills, but with 2,012,692 skillpoints to redistribute.
Reasoning behind the feedback
By only passing the applicable skillpoints there is a possibility that a character that has 40 million skillpoints only be allotted 20 to the applicable skills while a character with 20 million skillpoints might have the whole 20 million transfered to the new character. This scenario would not only be unfair but arbitrary. It can also be exploitable by players with insight, read CPM and their friends, that can train in advanced for this change with huge benefits.
CCP Rouge wrote:2) Are you completely abandoning DUST dev?
No. Without promising too much, we are actively working on stuff like balancing, Planetary Conquest, matchmaking, the in-game economy, and more. And of course we continue to work with the CPM to identify ways to improve the game.
Feedback
I understand that the words underlined are key to this statement. If the brunt of the workforce is dedicated towards legion, Dust 514 will not get the attention it needs to survive the time it has left. The game still has some balancing issues that should be addressed and can be addressed swiftly before continuing since most of them are number crunching and balance issues that have nothing to do with writing large extents of code. This is as simple as listening to the community and making the damage/distance/accuracy changes in SMALL PERCENTAGES ( read 3% or 5% per pass ). Apart from this dust is in a good place.
THE OBVIOUS
The one thing I will never forgive CCP for is not fixing my plasma cannon at least a Month before the server closes
CCP Rouge wrote:3) Is Project Legion going to have a PS4 version? Or something for consoles?
It is still far too early to discuss platform expansion, as like you saw we are still only working on the PC prototype at this time. But the PC architecture gives us the opportunity to grow once we have a great PC product at hand. For now, though, PlayStation 4 is not something we are working on.
I believe that making Legion for consoles would have a detrimental effect towards its development. Not only does a lot of constraints come into play; take dust as an example but , it also creates a time consuming activity which is finding how to make the game work all over again without any gain in actual content.
that being said I have heard, and someone can correct me if I am wrong, that PS4 and the XBOX One's architecture is a lot more like a pc than those of previous consoles.
CCP Rouge wrote:4) When are you going to give us more concrete information on Legion?
Again, Project Legion is still in an early stage of development but the whole idea behind giving a sneak peek at Fanfest is to get early feedback - and I really want to keep this discussion going, show you progress through dev blogs and such and listen to what you have to say.
Please post your feedback and questions in this thread - and let's keep this conversation going. The team and I will be reading this thread, and I will respond as soon as I can.

Last but not least; while I was initially very mad, I am slowly coming into acceptance of this news. But i would also like to pose a warning to CCP. If the reason behind developing legion is because Dust cannot fulfill the vision you guys had in mind, it is in CCPS best interest to make this product available as soon as possible. This will not only achieve better feedback but will get balance issues and bugs detected . I would even go as far as to suggest an Alpha version and early access for dust players

Pretty much, unless you're happy with a mediocre lobby-shooter replacement.
MAG - dead.
SOCOM: Confrontation - dead.
CoD & BF franchises - cash cows for the sheep.
