Unless something changes but thats unlikely.
Personally I suspect that Sony themselves will be closing PSN access from PS3's within 18 months, in the same way that Microsoft did with the original Xbox on the Live service about 5 years ago.

Hacking FPS is way easier. None of the modifications need to even effect the client. Meanwhile hacking EVE doesn't do anything without falsifying packets and that's far easier to detect from CCP's end.
Simply put, a storm is coming and I highly doubt they are ready for it. They think PC is a better platform because its easier to develop for. What they are not taking into account is the additional security force they will have to hire on. Ultimately, this was a stupid, stupid, stupid decision.

For those of us who are hoping for a long running persistent FPS MMO, building it on current technology, rather than a heavily customized old engine, and trying to avoid some of the core game issues which made DUST unsuitable for long term evolution, is a good thing.
DUST 514 is like the Hyundai Veloster. It looks like a sports car, but it is build on a cheep crappy compact Accent frame. No matter how much work they do on it, they can't make a real sports car unless the start from scratch with a better frame to support it. The new New Eden FPS will be built on a better frame, using all the experience they gained from DUST 514. I think we can be fairly confident that it will be better than DUST both in looks and performance. And if Rattati is involved, the weapon balance will be vastly better than it was in DUST 514 or release.

It is upsetting to me that dust on console has officially been given the death sentence. However taking the silly personal feelings away about it dying orb how bit was announced I can say this. The hope that a game, with a 7 year plan or whatever it was on a 7 year old console with a new console expected soon after its release, would make it much further than this with the obvious limitations of the ps3 is a little silly.
Pc makes much more sense for the type of ever expanding game that they plan for. I personally don't game on pc but the logic is undeniable.
The story of eve online and dust 514 has always been the story the players have made. Building up n your sand castle, having it kicked down, rebuilding it, and so on. I've played a lot with friends from real life, made true friends meeting some of the most amazing people you could hope to, had tons of fun, been disappointed, amazed, and road a whole roller coaster of events. I can say I've achieved everything I've wanted in this game. I hope everyone else has too. Remember this is still just a game and there will be many more.
There's no reason to act like children, even with how attached I am and how upsetting the news can be. Looking at it with my personal attachment removed I feel this is a good time to b pull the plug from a logical view point.
I'd personally like to thank you ccp ratatti, frame, archduke, and all the others. I was once a raging ads pilot when you nerfed me and now outshine even the av of today. You achieved things I didn't think would be achieved. You provided me with the best product you could with the tech and corporate limitations provided and put up b with a lot from this community as many feel they've put up with much from ccp in general. I appreciate your hard work.
I don't know if I'll be able to follow, and it's not a of wanting to or not. Though with all due respect I can't decide atb the moment if I do or not but it is not because of you. If it is not an inconvenience in my real life I will give you another shot. Thank you for the great experience o7

Long story short.... DUST University is sticking around
Hello to one and all,
You've all now been told the news regarding the move on the game from PS3 to PC and the shut down of the PS3 version at the end of May.
So what's happening to the Uni?
Its to going to stay till the end of the PS3 and then continue on PC. DUST University is the oldest Dust Corp in the game having been founded in 2009, so I'll be damned if a little thing like a format change is going to alter that.
The move to a new game, on a new format presents a Corp like us a fantastic opportunity to press for the tools that we've always lacked on the Sony format. I will continue to bug/annoy CCP for what we need and as we've been here for seven years nearly, we've become the closest thing to a ten year plan still around. ;)
So you know about the future now, I urge you all to join in on the forums and help CCP and the CPM make the new game everything we hoped for and more.
Kind Regards
Dennie Fleetfoot/Kevall Longstride CEO DUST University

Nice letter. I am going to have to draft one myself in a few minutes.
Immortal Guides, the Learning Coalition, and the Learning Alliance will all persist as they likewise are operated and maintained by an EVE character. If the new New Eden FPS has a link to EVE as DUST 514 did, then these organizations will also persist in the new game.
This means that in the new game there will be a place both for those who prefer to learn in an institutional setting (DUST University), and for the free spirits who like to learn in a less structured setting (Immortal Guides and the Learning Coalition). So whatever comes of this new FPS, we can at least be sure that new players will have support in getting started.
Hand/Eye coordination cannot be taught. For everything else there is the Learning Coalition.

I had fun. I found the best corp I've ever been a part of. I don't regret the time I had.
Dust has elements that actually kept me returning, even if seldom and solo and not for very long after all my friends moved on. Sad to hear it's leaving for PC. I'll miss out on that ride.
I can't say I'm surprised at how curt, and at least to me, unorganized their communications are on the matter. Their waffling decisions and burst announcements with little to no detail is common. I'm not saying you don't feel you have good reason to do this, CCP, internally for your business. However, I hope you're aware how sloppy this makes you 'appear' as a company from an outsider on the other side of your black curtain.
Given that I doubt you could capture what really made Dust a unique gem without copying most of it over to this new adventure AND without a foundation/schedule for any timelines or even just general details on this second 'new idea'...
Goodbye, CCP. o7 Good luck.

Do you remember World of Warcrafts law suit against lazybot? Where the complaint was lazybot was a script-determined automated "character" program that allowed for full automation of in game tasks like mining, crafting and selling without actually changing the wow-client. Wow said it was against tos and eula, lazy bot countered with no client changes, interactions, doesn't break eula, wow countered with the "warden drm" sleeper component. A wow plug in that scanned your RAM for programs and extensions that fell onto a certain catch list. Lazybot countered with invasion of privacy, wow said their ip, their eula, their drm. The courts sided wirh wow, and mega-drm eras were born.

I really really hope they connect it to EVE more than mere name and Corp belongings (if that). The connection to EVE is what drew me to Dust, and the most immersive gaming experience in my life comes from coordinating orbitals in FW (from either side). This (personal opinion) is what makes Dust stand out from other shooters, and I can think of several scenarios this can be further developed.
That being said, the new game do need to stand on its own legs, but that is what we have high sec (and low?) for.
Edit: To further my point, Dust 2.0 + EVE need to be a serious competitor to Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous... Not Battlefield. |
