I hoped that there would be a future and i really expected a port to PC which i would be perfectly fine with, but in the message is no announcement that Legion would be launched at the first of June. The last time they came out and said something first at Fanfest, the world blew up and it was a disaster. I think announcing it first here, on the forums that the community utilizes, is the responsible way to go about it. I understand the frustration though.
That is because they said the wrong thing prematurely and shot themselves in the foot. Because the new producer guy wanted to look good at fanfest. |

CCP Frame wrote:Dear DUST 514 Community,
CCPGÇÖs development team in Shanghai has been working on a prototype for a first-person shooter for PC with the goal of building a great FPS set in our sci-fi universe of New Eden (the universe in which EVE Online, DUST 514, EVE: Valkyrie, and Gunjack are set). Their experience is being utilized to build a new game from scratch using Unreal Engine 4 while harnessing all our learnings from DUST 514. This is in many ways an evolution of Project Legion, the concept we announced at EVE Fanfest 2014, but without the limitations of technical debt and development paths we quickly discovered in that effort that could never serve as a future-proof technology base for a full production game. This new project is still in an early phase of production, and we feel like weGÇÖre on the right track and plan to give an update at EVE Fanfest on April 21st as a part of the free livestream of the event. Since this new game will be different from DUST 514 (although keeping many of its great parts), we will provide tiered recognition rewards to our loyal DUST customers, details to be announced.
We are very proud of what weGÇÖve learned and accomplished with DUST 514 on PlayStation 3 over the past three years and it is an honor to be a part of such a dedicated community. We consider DUST 514 one of the best free-to-play offerings on the platform, but the years have caught up with us. It is with a heavy heart that we inform you that DUST 514 will be shutting down on May 30th, 2016. We therefore will not be releasing the 1.3 update as we had planned. Players will continue to be able to play for free on our servers until then, but all further PSN packs and purchases have been removed and disabled from the in-game marketplace and the PlayStation Store. Players with existing Aurum will be able to continue to purchase items from the in-game marketplace.
Thank you for being a part of DUST 514 on the PlayStation 3. We look forward to the next chapter, and hope youGÇÖll be a part of it and continue the journey with us.

Dust was my first competitive FPS I have ever played and it has a very special place in my heart. I have yet to find a game that could replace it but I guess it can never be replaced. Not really. Even with all its faults, bad management, bugs and rage quits, I loved it. I kept dreaming of a better future but alas, it was never meant to be.
IGÇÖm thankful I joined Escapist when they were testing the beta but without my friends in L.O.T.I.S. my time here probably would have been short. They took a noob and made her feel welcome. Together we had some of the best times I have ever had in a video game. I feel lucky to have met you and played with you and even luckier to have met my boyfriend here. This game was something special.

This sucks. Dust was my first FPS, if you don't count Borderlands 2 lol, and I remember how cool I thought this game was when I first played it. It's unlike anything else out there. More than the game, I'll miss the dysfunctional community and how involved we all were in everyone else's business all the time. Even though I highly doubt I'll ever become a PC gamer, you better implement similar social features like the local chats/chat channels. It created such a sense of unity. I'm sad I never got to live out my fantasy of being in a good corp, but that's my fault for always doing my own thing. Hope that I can have fun officerstomping with whoever is left playing until doomsday. I know my identity is unknown to most because I've been a pub match dom logi wh0re for such a long time, but I hope I made at least a little impact lol.
Thank you for the fun times, CCP. <3 |

Who is taking bets for a more or less open world FPS set in New Eden?
Social Hubs etc.
Unreal Engine 4,... nice. Two years until official release for sure.
Thank you for all the work. I hope this one will FINALLY become what it was supposed to be after all.

Ok just a quick summery of answers to comments in this thread so far that I think I can give while dancing on the edge of the NDA......
There is a rough approximation of the specs that the team is aiming for. The CPM is aware of that spec level but obviously we can't tell you in case it changes. But for anyone who's eyeing up Alienware levels of performance PC's you're wasting your money. Shop around for the components and make it yourself for half the cost. Plenty of guides out there to show you how its done.
But more important than that, you're going to find that you've built a stupidly overpowered PC for the new game. We're talking mid level here with maybe a decent GPU (but certainly not a GTX980 ti) to do all the bells and whistles that UE4 can do. Hopefully the team will be talking more about that in the build up to Fanfest.
On the matter of Fanfest, it's my personal assumption that while Rattati is going to tell you some details and insights into the thinking behind the new game but the majority of any information will likely be revealed at Fanfest. It is CCP's biggest event of the year after all. But the CPM were adament that any announcing should be done prior to Fanfest, directly to the Dust community at the earliest opportunity. And CCP agreed with us. We didn't have to fight hard for that at all.
Some have been talking about being told sooner. That would've been awesome but thats not how game development works unfortunately. You're likely familiar with terms like Pre Alpha, Alpha, Closed Beta, Open Beta, etc. But there are also internal stages of development which are called many different things depending on the developer.
CCP only wanted to tell you what they knew was concrete and going to happen. So far, so good. But as some of you had noticed, the sales of Aurum were turned off at the same time as the announcement over three separate divisions of Sony's PSN.
That unfortunately takes some time and a level of co-ordination to arrange, it wasn't a matter of flipping a single switch. A consequence of the move to PC will be to eliminate a lot of these unnecessary delays.
Some have commented that the CPM could've said something sooner. Saying that marks you as someone blissfully unaware of the legal consequences of breaking an NDA. Its easy to say, 'well I would've' when it's not your career or legal liability at risk. But trust me, when you've read one and your signature is on it.....
Some might say, we should have resigned in protest. But really, what would that have accomplished? Absolutely nothing except removing player representation from CCP's thinking. And because of the NDA, any resigning CPM couldn't say why.
Players have been asking about asset transfer. Again this is something that needs further discussion and clarification with the player base. The CPM is already actively talking to CCP about this. Once we have something thats ready to bring to your attention we will do so. But by all means carry on giving feedback on this issue.
Cant think of anything more at the moment that I can talk about. But the CPM and CCP are paying close attention to the forums.

This in a nutshell is what Project Legion was but as the OP stated, it was clear that it wasn't going to be future proof. It was also bringing over with it a lot of the problems that Dust had in the first place.
That and the fact that Demo shown at Fanfest required two Titan GPU's running at galactic temperatures, somewhat limited its ability to run on a mid level machine.

I have made some lifelong friends due to Dust and for that I thank you.
But CCP can go play with traffic, the way they have handled everything since fanfest 2014 has been atrocious. Then fact you aren't building Dust 2.0 (EDIT for PS4) shows the complete lack of what initially made this game groundbreaking and exciting to be a apart of.

Just plain wrong
Learn from what Caz did and how the community actually backed him, he could not say anything but his actions did alot more than his silence and the community picked up pretty quickly that something bad was in the works and lo and behold CCP hosted the Rouge Wedding live on twitch.
Caz is the only CPM who has actually represented the playerbase in some meaningful way while the rest sat back and supported CCP in there bad decisions and then actually come out and defend CCP.
Sure you can argue that CCP would have done all these bad decisions anyway without the CPM but the CPM backing them while they do it is even worse.

No, I'm not so sure about that. I don't see what's wrong with communicating to your best advertisers, your best advocates, "Hey, look this probably isn't a surprise but we are really struggling here. We need new blood in the game and those players to stay. To the OP, good! I am glad something is really happening with this game.
Now can we get back to the core design concepts of what Dust should've been?
"The original plan was to have ground troops form an important part of sovereignty warfare and faction warfare so that in any EVE war campaign alliances would have to hire DUST mercs or use their own DUST corp to take over the planets while the space pilots take the in-space infrastructure. That would have drawn DUST players into the political metagame, and the hope was that some would become interested enough in EVE from that angle to sign up and contribute to both sides of the war. That sounded pretty epic, but it never happened." courtesy of Nyphur MassivelyOP
This as i remember was the dream of New Eden i signed on for closed beta, which i got in with this char. Can we start rolling with it, at the damn last?!?

ItGÇÖs surreal to see that DUST is finally at an end. IGÇÖve been expecting it for so long; I never thought IGÇÖd actually see it happen. Though, IGÇÖm glad you broke the news to us first.
As I was reading what Frame and subsequently Darth and Zaria had to say, I drank in a bittersweet cocktail comprised of mixed emotions. Neither happiness nor regret was among them.
I'm a former PC player, now a console player without a PC or the means to acquire one any time soon. To be blunt, this is a slap in the face to console players and itGÇÖs going down worse than a 3-day-old beer.
I understand why the PC was chosen. Clearly, CCP has had trouble developing on the PS3 for a myriad of reasons and theyGÇÖve never been able to fully deliver what they, or we, had envisioned. ItGÇÖs simple; they want a future-proof system that they have full control over. Though, the melancholy feeling I have over the decision to make the new game PC exclusive will persist for a long time as DUST 514 was one of the best, if not THE best gaming experience IGÇÖve had to date. ItGÇÖs unique and I donGÇÖt believe IGÇÖll find another quite like it again.
LetGÇÖs be honest here though, we played a free game and we got free entertainment. Since the Rouge Wedding we all knew what DUST was, an experiment. That experiment had begun to outlive its usefulness to CCP then and is finally going to be put down now. Of course many of us spent hundreds of dollars on the game but we did that to enhance our experience, knowing that DUST, as it was, wasnGÇÖt going to last forever. I personally donGÇÖt regret spending the money that I did, nor do I regret playing the game for as long as I did. In my eyes, DUST gave more then it took and IGÇÖm leaving it a better gamer with a wealth of knowledge, memories and a lot of great friends.
LetGÇÖs talk about going forward though, CCP. As one of the many players youGÇÖll be leaving behind, my wish is that you preserve our legacy, especially the console players. Immortalize it. My hope is that you take the harsh lessons youGÇÖve learned during DUST 514GÇÖs lifetime, the funds and the countless hours both the players and the devs invested into the game and make the game we all envisioned to start with.
IGÇÖll be posting my recommendations on the issues of transferring SP, ISK, AUR and assets to the new game in this thread soon.
ItGÇÖs been an honour. Salute. o7

I'm not going to debate the merits or otherwise of Caz's decision to resign. I respect him for making that choice because he felt so strongly about the situation.
But that was two years, two CPM's and near enough an entirely new development team ago.
The situation that Caz found himself in is like chalk and cheese compared to the one that the current CPM find themselves in. CCP Rouge and Rattati have overhauled the Shanghai's office development structure.
They've managed to run both the Chinese Eve server and Dust, maintaining it and releasing point builds and an expansion, launched a successful VR mobile phone game while at the same time working on Dust's new incarnation on PC using less resources then their predecessor, and on top of all that cultivated a far healthier attitude to player feedback.
Now, you can refuse to believe that if you want and suspect many will because it runs counter to the mindset that they've cultured. But I've seen this transformation first hand over nearly two years and my own actual experience of a situation will always take precident over someone else's interpretation of a situation. Especially when that interpretation is based on second or even third hand recounting of said situation from two years ago.
I will continue to base my choices in discussion with the developers on the actual circumstance I find myself at the time. I am always mindful of what has happened in the past but I choose to not be enslaved by it.

I was there... total ~10h playtime with all my chars in several years of running service says it all. The same game on pc mostlikely i woud played for hunderds of hours as many other shooting games in the past. hopefully "project legion" will work as planned and not castrated by the wrong platform (and some real isk's from sony) |
