English trailer for Ping Pong
With as many people as there are checking it out lately I thought I'd go ahead and highlight this. For the most part Im thinking it's sounding pretty good, only really have an issue with the voices of the old people. Gonna be interesting to see who they get to voice Wenge as I think one of my favorite aspects of Ping Pong, and that particular character, was that they had actually gotten a native speaker of mandarin as part of the cast. Crossing my fingers that they're able to retain that for the dub.
SoTa PoP wrote: also, I'm starting Ping Pong as of this moment - full review depending on completion or not will be coming afterwords.
The more people that jump on the Ping Pong train the better. A show like that comes around once, maybe twice in any given year and it's one of those standout shows in the anime medium that keep me coming back. It's up there in my top 10 for sure.
gbghg wrote: on the subject of log horizon the last couple of episodes were good, doesn't redeem the kids arc but its back to standard fare and interesting stuff happening here, here's hoping season 3 will feature as little of toyha and co as possible.
Have fun waiting, from what I've heard we've basically caught up to the source material. Don't expect another season of Log Horizon for at least another couple years if at all.
Pseudogenesis wrote: I might check it out. I wouldn't normally be interested in a sports anime, I just watched Ping Pong because it got rave reviews. To be honest though I'll probably give it a miss, I don't watch much anime so when I do I try to stick to the "classics".
Trust me, as someone who had 0 interest in sports shows until last year both Ping Pong and Haikyuu totally blew me away. Haikyuu probably won't be remembered as a genre defining show that Ping Pong was but it's absolutely fantastic in its own right. What it does it does extremely well.

episode 1-2 Ping Pong The Animation:
lol, wtf. This shows animation couldn't be uglier. I'm the type that is grateful for beautiful anime art, shows like Clannad, Spice and Wolf, Tempest, and Bakemonotgari, looking at them is as wonderful as everything else.
However, even with the ugly animation the actual movement quality and camera angels are perfect. And the rough look lets the rough character seem all the more natural rather then forced like many other shows that have attempted to introduce a less then perfect looking characters.
It's like this show was also made from Shaft - so many subliminal messages in the art itself that tells as much if not more then the words expressed by the characters.
And as far as characters go - That chinese guy is cool xD
I'll be continuing with updates o/

This is always a pet peeve of mine.
Art =/= Animation.
You're more than one welcome to dislike the art style of the show (although it matches the style of the manga perfectly and the background art being employed in the show is nothing short of gorgeous) but that's different from disliking the animation. It's like when people criticize the animation in the infamous Pain v. Naruto fight despite the animation in and of itself being, technically speaking, fantastic. It's the style that fight employed that people had an issue with.
Yuasa, the director of the show, is known for his visually eccentric style, he was basically the PERFECT fit for the adaptation of this series. Check out Kaiba and The Tatami Galaxy if you're interested in his other stuff . I've been meaning to watch Kaiba for a while so I may end up doing per episode impressions of it after I wrap up Dennou Coil.
Looking forward to reading more of your impressions.

Episode 3:
Show is beginning to pick up on the plot, which is really coming around.
The initial problem I had with the show is the introduction - it was so casual and with no explanations that you're left to just figure it out through conversations yourself.
But I see now there's a reason for that - it let's you subjectively develop the characters yourself on what you think of them, sort of like a first impression in real life.
They make you judge the main character, his friend, his team, and pretty much every character right off the bat by setting a bar of 'good vs bad' and 'motivated vs unmotivated'
At that point though, the show starts to falter, as the actual theme is so anime cliche that I don't know what to think of it.
Plot wise, this is a pretty predictable show, you can pretty much guess the next scene. But this may be due to how well they embellish the characters that you feel you know 'em well enough to know what comes next.
With Slice of Life shows like this one - that's actually not a bad way to go about things, you don't need an unpredictable plot to enjoy the show, ti all falls down to how well you execute the plot.
And so far Ping Pong executes very well.

We have stories like these a-plenty in anime. A hidden bad-ass who doesn't like to brag - just enjoy. In the sports section of Anime this sort of story is especially used, a good example would be http://www.crunchyroll.com/kurokos-basketball, but rather then 'hidden' he's just quiet about it and doesn't brag as he wipes the floor with everyone.
I think the atmosphere of Ping Pong is going to mislead people into thinking there's something more going on here then there really is. But I hope i'm wrong - but so far, everyone besides the coach and the chinese player is one-dimensional.
The protagonist, he friend, their friends, the acquaintances, nothing is explained, mentioned, hinted to show that there's anything else but ping-pong in there head. And although it's enjoyable, I sorta expected more from a show you highly praised. EDIT: There was a hint of to as why the main guy wanted to be in ping pong in relation to looking up to his friend, but that was it, lol.
I'm a lil confused and happy about one thing Ping Pong does - introduces character, fleshes them out super fast, then let's go of them.
Do they come back? Were they just there because the director didn't have enough content to fill 23 minutes? This show is confusing sometimes, lol.
I do hope they come back, that guy who wanted to visit the sea seemed pretty cool xD

But i think I have a personal disconnect because....

Yeah I was getting ready to respond to your expanded thoughts about your saying that the themes/narrative were predictable but you beat me to it. Like I said, this is character drama that uses Ping Pong as a foundation to tell its stories.
As for how it's considered a real sport, there's a huge emphasis on technical skill and reaction time? -shrug-

Now this is goodness. The way the plot orchestrated all the characters background revealing them at just the right moment - goodness.
I also take back my comment about the art subliminal messages or hidden meaning - it had a few moments of images representing thought/emotion, but they've almost completely stopped, the show now focusing completely on what developments been done and show-casing it.

Finished!!!!
8.5/10
Would of scored 9 if I didn't find the show bloody painful to look at.
The shows pace is incredible. It starts off slow and rather bland - if you continued this show waiting week per week it was solely for the uniqueness the show brings - it offered nothing else.
The actual plot doesn't begin to shine till near the end, with a slow buzz building over everyones progress that will lead to a satisfying conclusion.
And that's the part that hook line and sunk me in the end - the ending. Nothing makes me happier then finishing a show and it feeling as if I had actually seen it all to the end and there was no more coming cause there is nothing else to say.
The twist at the end wrapped the whole show together beautiful, too. It made all the awkwardness of the main character make sense and it can be analyzed in many different ways.
To me, it was a reverse story. We think we know who the main character is - we don't. The shows plays itself magically, if you drop this show half way it'll seem like the biggest waste of time, next to trash like Girls Bravo *Though I still liked it, lol*
You have to see this show all the way through, do not stop half way, otherwise you will miss out on what makes Ping Pong special.
Also, the three coaches who are all childhood friends - if they ever make a show telling us about there past I'd watch it, I have a feeling that lady would carry the show much like Holo.
Oh, one last thing - the OP and ending music is great. Reminds me of FLCL's music.

So like I said, after finishing Your Lie in April I wanted to start it again.
But I only got to the second episode before I was bawling in tears.
See, the first time through it's all from Arima's perspective and you never notice the subtle details from Kaori. So the second time through it's an emotional rollercoaster seeing both sides of the story.

Winter is wrapping up for me this week, so I'll post my reviews of everything that has ended so far.
Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso: I've already review this in a previous post, but to reiterate this show was fantastic. Music was amazing, animating was fantastic, characters were great, the romance was better, and the ending was masterfully crafted.
Akatsuki no Yona: Is this over? Is a sequel going to be released? For now I will assume that there will not be a sequel: The show felt complete at the end anyway. This show has so many things going for it. The characters are absolutely amazing, with interesting personalities and motivations that makes each character feel real and alive. The atmosphere of the show was great, with just enough comedy to offset the rather serious tone that is cast over the entire show. The romance was there, but definitely not overbearing like it can be in other anime. Animation and music were both pretty good, and the action in the show was great as well. As I said earlier, even though this show seems like it set up a sequel, I would feel happy if that was the ending. It left a lot to the imagination, but it did tie up most of the loose ends. Above all, this show was just enjoyable. I'm going to say it was the second most enjoyable show this season, but more on that later.
Parasyte: Admittedly this show did get a bit boring nearing the end, but nonetheless this show was still really good and definitely a fun watch. The characters were kind of flat, but the conflict was really well done for both the external and internal struggles that occurred throughout the show. Where this show really shines though is its philosophical nature. This show gets pretty deep into the topic of humanity's position as the apex predator of the entire planet and shows just how strong humanity is. The last episode reflected this amazingly, and I just want to re-watch that episode over and over again to pull all of the philosophical meaning out of it. Overall Parasyte was a pretty good show.
Kantai Collection(KanColle): Remember when I said that Akatsuki no Yona was the second most enjoyable show this season? This is the anime that made it fall to second most enjoyable. I never played KanColle as a game, but I could imagine all the connections between the game and the show, especially in terms of the admiral being the player character. This show had fantastic animation and music, as well as some really good characters. The lack of ecchi content was a nice change compared to a lot of other similar anime, and I am just going to mention one more time that the characters were fantastic. Apparently most of the battles that occurred were historically accurate, so that is cool. Again, this show shines in the category of raw enjoyability. I am so glad I didn't drop this show.
This season has been magnificent. I have Saekano and Unlimited Fafnir ending today so I will have those reviews up tonight.
Aside from that, have a nice day everyone. Sincerely, Glantix / Ice

I'm finishing up a lot of shows this season too, and so far my ratings are as such:
Boring Girlfriend Yona Absolute Duo World Trigger Testament of Sister Devil Dog Days S3 Kancolle
I have yet to see the new Idol Master, which I'm told will easily be competing with how good the original Idol Master was, which will probably put it in third above Absolute Duo.
As far as why my rankings are this way - Boring Girlfriend just tickled me in a special way, it's not particularly better then Yona as far as Plot, Character, and Design goes, but the genre and set-up of the show was to my great enjoyment.
And Yona - damn good show. She doesn't get one Goku - but 4! And a mini Sima Yi. Usually the concept of Goku's in my show throws up red flags left and right, plot becomes unbearably predictable. But the guidance of the show was directed by the interactions with Yona. And Yona herself is absolutely amazing, sitting next to Holo as one of the best characters of all time.
Absolute Duo is just a fun watch with enjoyable characters, its a bit too centered on the school and absolute duo system, creating a very one sided story telling that more intellectual watchers will be turned off by eventually, another show that suffers from this is Fafner.
Testament - honestly, should of ranked this higher then Absolute Duo, but the amount of Ecchi that supports the plot is sometimes over-the-top.... which isn't always a bad thing :3 great story, enjoyable enough characters, and has a great style of revealing twists that the watchers didn't know - but the hero did. I'd recommend this show, honestly, lol.
Dog Days S3 - <3 <3 <3 <3 Need I say more? The level of Moe in this show is off the charts and they know how to make it enjoyable the whole time, ecchi levels are low, but it's there.
Kancolle - Poi! Poi, poi poi poi, poi! Poi POI! Translated - shows just kinda sucks. It can't decide if it wants to be serious or moe, and it can't remain consistent on action scenes. It's still a good watch simply because the characters are enjoyable to look at - there personalities are a dime a dozen, some flat annoying, and the ones who are special get very little screen time.
Shows a wreck, it is cool how the play off the player-admiral and his relation with the girls, but it's relying on it's charm rather then story to keep it interesting.

Since everyone's doing it I guess I'll chip in on the Funimation side of things
Yuri Kuma Arashi aka LESBIAN BEAR STORM -
It's hard to find a premise for any given show more ridiculous than Yuri Kuma Arashi. A bear comet screams across the night sky one day causing the bears of the Earth to rise up and strike out against the humans of the world. A barrier is setup to separate the two worlds and we follow the lives of Kureha, a human, and two bears that have infiltrated the barrier seeking her out. As my first exposure to the works of Ikuhara the only reasonable response to this was a resounding ... wat. But Yuri Kuma kept me interested despite the patently ridiculous concept and ultimately surprised me with the quality of its execution.
The worst part of this show is the first 3 episodes. The sheer number of concepts and events that are thrown at you in this span of time leaves you with a sense that the show doesn't seem to be heading towards any sort of defined "direction". Things just "happen" and while the opening is certainly improved due to Ikuhara's distinctive directorial style it suffers due to what feels like a rushed attempt to lay down the concepts and ideas that lay at the core of the show. It asks of you to sympathize with characters and specific tragedies that aren't given enough screentime for the viewer to gain any sort of emotional attachment to and uses these as defining factors for the main character's actions later on in the series. The opening feels rushed.
But then something happens with episode 4 and beyond. It slows down a bit, it puts a brake on the speeding freight train that was the line of events happening one after the other and starts to focus on the characterization of the main cast. The seemingly one dimensional protagonists are given enough color in these moments to endear themselves to the viewer. The direction, coupled with a coherent direction for the plot, starts to shine. Contrasting with what I think is the majority of anime at the moment, Yuri Kuma becomes a markedly improved experience with time. It asks of you to sit through and experience the chaos of exposition and hastily constructed concepts thrown at you at the start and rewards you with a tale of lasting friendship through adversity told in a ridiculous yet consistent world. Don't let the premise steer you away from this one, it's one of the best shows of Winter.

It's also a great site for organizing your anime and finding new ones while doing so, beats myanimelist by miles, imo.
I'm on episode 10 rolling girls, it's not a terrible show, it's like Dynasty Warriors in a way, my problem with it is the progression is complete **** from one story to another, feels way too scripted and not fluent like some old anime.
wll start maria soon, my brother caught up/finished it and he enjoyed it.
Just picked up White Knight Chronicles II and will be attempting to beat this w/o the online :'(
Also started Idol Master Cinderella Girls, it's what people told me it was - it has even better animation then the previous season, which was already pretty strong. Interesting cast, but some seem a bit too diverse and out there, thus unbelievable.
I also hate that third girls personalty type with all my heart - strength on the outside, weakness in the inside, and is far too out-going for being that way. Just kinda irks me.

oh, and I never clarified on Ping-Pong.
It's not a Goku type show I was expecting, it was a bit of a mind-tweaser how it fooled me with obvious story ploys then played them out in a completely different way in the end, bringing out the main two characters in a fantastic way. Everyone thought they knew each other better then they thought they knew themselves, and they let it effect them.
Still ugly as ****, the only females more comedic reliefs, and they baited you with interesting side characters like that weird haired player at the school the glasses guys went too - the show showed his life a few times, even his work, then kinda left it dry.
over-all, glad I watched Ping Pong. But it's not making my top 10, lol.
