I liked it too, I just found it disappointing.
My thoughts pretty much mirror yours, on an individual moment to moment basis I think Kill la Kill does extremely well. It is, as you said, entertaining. I just wish it was better able to string together the individual moments into something a bit more concrete, everything was there for something truly great.
Little Witch Academia remains Trigger's best work thus far.

It was weird, and definitely NSFW, but I think I liked it. I was disappointed with Kill la Kill frankly. A show that absolutely oozed style from start to finish yes but one that ultimately left me dissatisfied with everything that could have been. Everything from the intro to the initial introduction of Tsumugu was absolutely sublime but after that point I feel like the show stumbles and is never able to quite pick up the pieces on the writing front. Tsumugu never does anything significant after that point. Nudist Beach, an organization that's implied to have much more significance to the overall arching plot, gets wrecked in a single episode. The "Fiber Bullet" plot point is completely dropped and forgotten about the moment it's brought up. Ryouko has the world bend over backwards to make up for her fuckups (how many times did she "get away" after being pummeled by Satsuki's forces?), the field trip arc was pointless and a waste of time, etc etc etc. It really feels like there was a major re-write during the middle of development where they just veer off into a completely different direction. i liked it, the plot was far from a masterpiece but i think it did alright, it was entertaining and didn't have too many gaping plot holes, and everything else from the style, to the fight scenes, to the music was fantastically done. i wouldn't rate kill la kill as one of the greatest anime's ever, but i would rate it as one of the most entertaining. thats what i think of it at least, i understand its something of a polarizing anime. That's pretty much how I think of it. The plot wasn't its strong point. The plot was alright. Not bad, but not epic and amazing either. And still not the best anime IMO. I like it a lot, but it's not my favorite.
For me is was just the sheer entertainment of it. That's why I like it. It was never boring, at any point. There were no slow episodes and it kept your attention at all times. The combinations of the great visuals, the subtle (and not so subtle) jokes, and the sheer weirdness of every new thing was great.
It also has a pretty awesome soundtrack, IMO. Ragyo Kiruin's theme was great, on particular.

honestly, i think its one of the best villain themes i've ever heard, it (much like raygo herself) dominates any scene its in, light your heart up and don't lose your way are other great songs on the soundtrack as well.

I liked Kill la Kill just for that edgy go **** yourself cause I can do it without yo damn help cuz I OP attitude that fit in Gurren Laggan so well.
I've now put Ping Pong on my next to watch, I just want to keep watching Tokyo Raven's Dub....
It seems Funimation has a new Dub policy that both amazes and frustrates me.
It's amazing because as anime is released in japanese - it'll also be releases in english!!! Dubbing has now hit mainstream and is going x10 faster in process to get it out as quickly as possible.
Problem with this is.... Funimation's cast of voice actor is the most over-used bunch, CCP's models have probably seen less work around.
An example of this being a problem - Yona of the Dawn. One of the best shows in years, easily one of my favorites for fantastic VA work, amazing and captivating art, and interesting characters that continually makes you want to see more of all of them...
But the Dub, starting at episode 14 for some reason, tramples all over that. The VA they choose for Yona, a very talented english VA, had no ******* reason to be the heroine. The dub took Yona, the best character in the show, and made her hard to watch because when she speaks you want to throw rocks at her.
She was meant to sound cute and absent minded with a hint of budding maturity. The VA for English sounds more like an air-head who got off the wrong slave ship.
it's funny to say, though, Funimations dubbing of Tokyo Ravens is Fantastic. I'm just pissed that good VA companys like the ones in Canada get no work even though they have more talent. Funimations needs to understand they're ******* up the dubs by re-using the same VA's without even tuning there voice to even sound different.

There are some anime's that should never be dubbed.. Yona is a perfect anime all the characters are great. I loved Tokyo Ravens but I'm scared to watch the dub cuz it might ruin it for me.. Then there's some where the dub is better it's like a 50/50.

It's another one of the rushed Funimation dubbing - thankfully, this ones actually pretty well done. No where near as bad as Yona, but I doubt any show will make me cringe like Yona did after hearing the VA's.

Foundation Seldon wrote: Yessss, finally someone listens. Easily my top contender for my Anime of the Year 2014 and, as you said, is probably up there with some of the best shows I've ever seen in the medium. Just a fantastically executed character drama and the overall art direction (though divisive) is one that I wholly appreciated start to finish. Some of the background art in particular is just gorgeous.
Though Haikyuu!! is less ambitious in terms of overall direction I think if you enjoyed Ping Pong you'll similarly enjoy that show as well. It's another extremely well crafted sports show that focuses on volleyball instead. In contrast with Ping Pong, Haikyuu spends a bit more time explaining the ins and outs of the sport itself while using it as a device to tie in the specific development of the characters. Ping Pong felt like a character drama that used Ping Pong as a convenient device to tell its tale where as I feel like the "Sport" in Haikyuu takes more of a spotlight. The author does a really really good job of balancing a large cast of the characters and the added addition of a team element makes for some interesting directions for the story. Hit it up man.
I might check it out. I wouldn't normally be interested in a sports anime, I just watched Ping Pong because it got rave reviews. To be honest though I'll probably give it a miss, I don't watch much anime so when I do I try to stick to the "classics".
Speaking of which, which FMA should I watch? I hear Brotherhood is a little worse overall but I heard about a certain pitch black plot happening/emotional gut punch that happens at some point and it's got me interested.
Edit: And for when you inevitably answer "Both!", which should I watch first?

Some shows just feel like they should not be dubbed. Bleach with subs was so much better than the dub version. Toradora with subs was light years better than the dub version.
Some shows also actually do a pretty decent job with the dub. Space Dandy was a fine dub version. However, most seem to miss the mark. |

Watch the original first, then Brotherhood. Also, this is probably the first time I've heard someone say that Brotherhood was worse. There were a few good points in the original, but it felt incomplete even after watching the sequel movie. If you only plan on watching one, watch Brotherhood. If your going to watch both, watch the original first.
Of course, this is just my opinion, and I'm sure someone else will disagree, but take it as you may.

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso finished for me this week. That show was amazing. The ending was beautiful, and I don't think I have ever seen such a happy yet such a sad ending. Definitely in my top 5 now.
Speaking of shows finding there way into my top 5, I just finished Mirai Nikki. I could probably write a few essays on how good this show was, but there is a character limit for forum posts, so I am not even going to bother. This show has to be the most unpredictable show I have watched. Even the plot twists I did manage to predict had there own twists which left me speechless. This was also my first experience with a proper yandere, make that THE yandere, and I have to say of the four common personality types in anime this one has to be my favourite(Sorry tsundere, but your kinda getting old). Gisai Yuno was such a well done character, in fact most of the characters were really well done, and she is easily in my top 5 characters of all time. Plot got a bit weird at the end, but it still all fit well and the redial episode made the show feel complete when all was said and done.
Looks like a lot of shows are ending for me next week. I watch on crunchyroll for free, thus I am a week behind, so no spoilers please. Really pumped for spring, but I have to say this season has been absolutely amazing.
Anyway, anime is great. Peace out guys. Glantix / Ice

I did a post a while back about Gate - Jietai Kare No Chi Nite, Kaku Tatakeri (Gate - Thus the JSDF Fought There!)...
Looks like it will be animated!
But it's very conflicting for me. The studio is a great pick as A-1 is living the dream with all the money that SAO probably brought them. However, it seems like it's the team from Love Live! School idol project...
I feel like a team going from cute, fluffy, slice-of-life, to a jarring military fantasy with violence, gore, and dramatics with a side of humor is a very big switch.
In any case, it's slated for July. Mark one anime I'll be keeping track of this summer!
Also, can't wait for Shokugeki no Souma!

Just "finished" Spice and Wolf.
I love it. The characters are absolutely great. I know that a character is good when you can't predict their acriosn, but their actions end up being exactly what they would do. That is a sign of good character design and growth. ...The lack of closure is devastating.
It kills me that there isn't a third season, even though word is that the light novels were finished a long time ago. Why did they stop? Surely this show was/is fairly popular, so why didn't they finish the series?

Surely this show was/is fairly popular, so why didn't they finish the series? Third season is still in the air, the company who made the second season *The show got passed around for a while* spoke a bit on it saying they'd love to make a third season - but they need more fan support, which they have TONS of.
But they did something else - the person who crafted Spice and Wolf's character and stories did another anime - Maoyu.
It takes that fantastic setting, character design, atmosphere, and personalities that made Spice and Wolf so amazing - and throws in Hentai characters and plot.
It sounds aweful - I know, but they play down the ecchi side of the show so much it's not even noticeable besides a single pair of rather large breasts that for once - you can forget is there from time to time to just enjoy the character.
Even though the show is a combination of a hentai and fantasy world rolled into 1, it's equally as good as Spice and Wolf, if not better for a lot of people.

Aldnoah - End A season 2 that was genuinely more entertaining than S1 ends with a fizzle all the same.
Parasyte - End This series nosedived hard after the midway point and never stopped. Finale was a bunch of pretentious garbage that'd sound really deep and profound to a middle schooler. Quality of the source material aside I don't think anyone can deny that the anime adaptation suffered from some **** poor direction.

But they did something else - the person who crafted Spice and Wolf's character and stories did another anime - Maoyu.
What? No. The guy who wrote LOG HORIZON did Maoyu. The author of Spice and Wolf is some other dude.

Log Horizon? Guess I'll have to go find that article that linked Spice and Wolf and Maoyo together, i must of forgotten the contents.
also, I'm starting Ping Pong as of this moment - full review depending on completion or not will be coming afterwords.
