OOC: No one had posted in a while, I felt as though it was on me to end Halvedes' creations. But seeing the sudden outpour of posts, not only do I see that Alixenus, is, was valued, but now you have all learned not to dilly dally in a crisis situation! _____________________________________________________________________________________________ The air was still, silent with a metallic tang hanging thickly upon it. The Bridge was gone. The Buildings either side were gone. The creatures were gone. The clouds directly above were vanquished, casting a brilliant ray of light upon the place of that act of defiance, of will, of heroism. A few shreds of cloth were carried away on a gentle breeze; the last evidence of Kaltedes' physical being. In a small clearing in the rubble lay Alixenus, his clothes burned, his skin smoking. Limbs cast about him at wild angles, but somehow still attached. His once handsome looks made black with soot and hairless now. If anyone had been there, they would have heard nought, for even the birds had ceased their song. The storm would soon pass over again and the skies would once more weep upon that place. |

But good job throwing Void in, I agree with your assessment of the challenge level. There HAS to be some sort of telepathy going now. So Vyzion, in answer to your question about the Dwarf pit fights, I imagined them to bloody, but not intentionally to the death. You want your men to at least reach the battle after all. With copious amounts of coin and Mead being thrown around. I'm not posting anything else about the expedition to the Giant lands yet as Vyzion's already put it 5 days ahead of the events in Diyad. I'm just going to let them sail unevntfully for now. Lastly, I just want to say, like everyone else. I miss Galrick too.

The first thing that hit him was the smell. The smell of blood, coin and stale ale. Conyr gagged as he climbed out of the cranny he had been hiding in. Next, the noise. Animalistic cries and primal roars, as if torn from the throats of creatures in absolute agony, dozens of them, reverberating off the creaking, blood-splattered, wooden hull. Conyr winced as the torrent of sound pounded his eardrums, almost like a physical force.
The sight that met the young logipriests' eyes was tinged in red. Whether that was because Conyr was stuck in a dark, damp area for so long his vision had gone wonky, or whether it was because there was actually a red mist of blood overhanging the whole scene, Conyr could not tell. Perhaps it was a combination of both.
The lighting was poor; a few bare flames flickered along the walls. Conyr had came out right next to a torch, so all he saw was the sillhoeutte of men, arranged in a ring, screaming and jostling, watching the center intently. Conyr walked into the darkness, curiousity compelling his feet. As nimble as a cat, he jumped onto one of the tables which circled the men, and from there onto a pile of crates. From this height he gazed into the center.
A pit, as he had imagined. Strangely, though, his imagination had filled the pit with bloodthirsty beserkers, pounding each other into pulp.
The fight in the pit, however... Conyr had no other word for it but... graceful. A dwarf and a man, bare-chested, circled each other. The screams of the men around them, the ale being consumed in copious amounts, the coin being palmed, pickpocketed, traded, betted, scammed. The flow of the money was akin to the flow of their bodies in the pit. Weaving around each other they fought with controlled passion and restrained power.
Conyr was mesmerised. He realised this was a new fight, too, for eventually the noises of the crowd around him died down: the audience realised this fight was different. Perhaps the others were simply bloodshed. Perhaps the dozens of previous fights were simply disarrayed displays of brutality compared to this elegant dance.
Minutes ticked by, but the hold was completely silent. Even the drunkards who had come simply to win money for ale stopped imbibing their intoxicating tonics. The sounds of the two fighters' feet were audible.
Thump, thump-thump, thump-thump, thump...
And a blur of movement, a collective gasp, and the fight was over. What happened in that split-second no one would be able to recall correctly, and a hundred stories and rumours would spawn from it, but the end result was clear. The man was pinned to the ground by the dwarf, who was unconscious. But even in unconsciousness his muscles refused to unlock, and the man, weakened as he was, could not get up.
Someone spoke up in the crowd. "So... that's a draw?"
And the money resumed its flow. Those who had bet on a draw grinned with satisfaction, the rest were glaze-eyed and disappointed.
But Conyr sat, invisible in the darkness, gazing at the two warriors, wondering. |

Nexhawk and Thanatos were flying swiftly above the vast sea of the abominable golems when the former's senses tingled and drew his attention at one of the central avenues of Karthage. His eyes found Alexinus, standing with his aide opposite the army of approaching monsters. Nexhawk read the look of defiance and grim deliberation on the Venezzian's face, and his blood vessels shivered from fear as if it were the coldest wind.
And then, a fling of a hand from one of the pair gave birth to an explosion of a tremendous proportion. It grew and blossomed in an instant, devouring the Venezzians and golems alike in its expansion of destruction. Soon a very large area around the epicenter was engulfed in deadly flames that licked and ate bodies and buildings with ease. The gusts of wind rushed forth from the explosion in all directions, heralding the fiery doom that followed; the Phoenixes were beating their wings with all strength to stay airborne. Nexhawk was ready to send his mount down there to help any survivors, but he was reminded of another survivor on the creature next to him.
The Ashborn noticed a small group of Diyadians on the outskirts of the city, hurriedly moving away from the fire in the center of Karthage. By the look of their armor and containers they were taking with them, Nexhawk assumed they were Alkemists. He ordered Fel'ir to land nearby and, a few moments later, dragged Thanatos off his mount and onto the ground. The Diyadians rushed to help their fallen king, and Nexhawk asked, "Please help him! I could not do anything..."
Having left Thanatos to the Alkemists' care, Nexhawk jumped on Fel'ir and told it to fly to the place where the explosion commenced. Once there, he saw utter destruction and annihilation of buildings and golems. Alexinus' aide was nowhere to be seen, and given his proximity to the epicenter, Nexhawk never doubted what his terrifying fate was. Alexinus himself was lying several meters away, his entire body charred and even burning in some spots. Nexhawk ran up to him and fell to his knees, desperately trying to help. He placed his palms on Alexinus' still chest and murmured several words, this drawing all fire from the Venezzian's body into his own. The flames ran from the entire body into Nexhawk's hands, finally stopping Alexinus' skin and organs from burning.
Aside from that, however, Nexhawk couldn't do much. He sorrowfully looked into Alexinus' lifeless face, still bearing that countenance of suicidal determination. Why, Alexinus? Why did you have to do that?
Nexhawk scooped the body and carried it over to the second phoenix, meanwhile feeling a lump forming slowly in his throat. He carefully placed Alexinus on the mount and climbed on Fel'ir himself. By his command, the two Phoenixes rose in the air and flew away from the center of Karthage, away from this place of despair and desolation. |

OOC: I see this started a new page, don't forget to read my last post on the previous one.
Blackness. Still blackness. Just when he thought he could feel his consciousness return, a heavy sleep consumed his mind. Once again he was floating in the blackness of the heavens, surrounded by the beautiful stars, nebulae, and debris. One thing was more beautiful than all that. This was the endless river of orbs. He recalled them being called The Sea of Souls. However this time there was no Reaper, only Thanatos. The colorful souls began to light up by his appearance. Tonnes had exited their formation along the path and danced around him, floating with child-like glee. He could faintly here what sounded like a sonata. The music was like heaven to the ears. It was cheery and inspired life into his very being. He was almost content with staying in this place forever, but then the music changed. It became violent and sinister ripping apart his insides with failure and anguish. He could feel the satisfaction of his enemies gloating in front of him. The souls around him grew frightened, and lost their will. They each fell back into the celestial river and the color drained from them. As he reached out to them, a blinding light overtook his eyes. The stars that had flooded the space had exploded in all around him, and the blinding light tore the skin from his body. Left was nothing but a pink flame, in the midst of eternal darkness.
"Is this the fate that awaits us all? No gods, no light, no life? Only me? Alone?"
Off in the distance there was a faint light. It was a bright blue. He floated in its direction for what seemed like ages. When he could finally make out what it was, he instantly recognized. It was a soul, frantically moving in different directions. It seemed lost, like it ha no where to go. It too was alone with him. Then Thanatos spoke out to the soul.
"Are you lost?"
"..."
"Do you need help?"
"..."
"Wait you're not supposed to be here, why are you here? ... Alixenus?"
The Snake of Illusion was badly injured, but his wounds had already begun healing. He still needed help, and the local clinics would turn him in immediately. So Sara and Franklin led Brutus deeper into the Slums, he Snake on his back, until they had reached a large door, taller than Brutus. There seemed to be no way of opening it. But Franklin began hugging the while pacing towards the left.
"It should be somewhere... ah here it is! The invisible barrier. We need to find him help, and we'll only be able to find it here."
Franklin had slipped straight through the wall as if it had not existed. He reached out his hand to beckon the two in. As Brutus entered he could immediately see the clouds below them. This was the Underbelly of the floating city. In the distance was a large dim red light, meant to act as artificial sunlight, for its poor residents. The people here lived independently of Gran Arcadia, they were even more poor than the Slums inhabitants. Instead of roads they had dangerous metal bridges and scaffolding. Hanging ever so weakly above the clouds. There were small shanty huts instead of houses, save for the larger metal facilities. People died here every day, from either falling, or the black sickness. An unknown plague that rendered the entire body weak and frail. It mostly affected certain people, the virus was random, and none knew when they'd fall prey to it. Franklin led the two across a large metal bridge that was much stronger than the other fortunately. They finally arrived at one of the larger facilities. Franklin approached the door which had a closed shutter. He knocked and after a few moments. The shutter opened and two eyes appeared staring menacingly into his. HIs voice was deep and almost scary.
"What brings you here, Ratt of Information? Come with news that will aid the Resistance?"
"Not exactly."
"Then what is it?"
"Well we are in trouble and need your help. You see we have Sara and a giant, also--"
"Sara? Giant? Who sent you here? Have you betrayed us, there is no reason for her to be here."
Sara left Brutus' side and walked up to the door, the shutter was too high above her head but she spoke anyway.
"But I am here!"
"Listen you must let us in! Not only is Sara here, but the First Son is too! He is injured."
"He is you say? Fine come in."
Behind the door was a long cranking sound and the entire wall in front of them, opened up. The door they had seen was merely a misdirection. Inside was a small army of men dressed in crimson armor clad in weapons. There were different sections and one seemed to be a clinic of some sort. Brutus handed the Snake to nearby attendees. They urged Sara to follow them, and she did. They both walked into a room. The man behind the door had revealed himself, he was also dressed in crimson armor, his skin was a dark brown and his hair was in a braided ponytail. His tone was more friendly this time.
"Now Franklin, care to explain to me what's going on, and why we have a giant in our compound?" |

OOC: I suppose its time I put you all out of your misery. Just a little FYI, don't listen to the music of Mass effect whilst reading this thread unless you want it to be 10000 times more emotional. I learned that the hard way.
Just as the blue flame seemed to sense the presence of Thanatos it flew towards him at great speed. It stopped just a small space short of him, but continued not to reply to him. What Thanatos did not realise was that the reaper had appeared only to the blue flame and was looking down upon it like a disappointed parent.
"You are here too soon Alixenus. Don't act like its not your name, it is until it is time for you return here. You are much to eager, do you not know that you still live in Dustia? Why do you give up that realm so easily? Do you think I would simply allow you to leave this place and face Fate? Did you think that your actions absolved you of your responsibilities in the mortal realm? No, return. No return there and wait until you are called."
His heart still beats, but his lungs are still.
Oh and look, a thought just dashed through his head. No doubt to be followed by others.
And on cue he breathes. Hurry up now. Breathe.
I said Breathe.
Alixenus belched out great gouts of smoke and congealed blood. His eyelids fluttered for a moment and when he finally managed to open them he immeadiately clamped them shut. The world was shockingly bright, it offended and stung his eyes. He squinted to get his bearings but even then the pain was near unbearable. At least it distracted him from the agony in the rest of his body. Through his fuzzy perception of the world, he noted two curious things. First, that he appeared to be on the back of a Pheonix and second, the smoke and blood that he had regurgitated was hanging in the air in front of him. The Pheonix wasn't moving. Then he saw the shape that could only be her hanging in the air in front of him.
A pity, I had so hoped that you had anhilated yourself. It seems to be such a human thing to do. To destroy yourself in order to defeat an insurmountable foe.
Alixenus' voice came out as a low, harsh snarl, followed by the wheeze of his breathing. "Why?"
Why did I bring you back? I didn't. That one you were with, Kaltedes. He performed some sort of Alkhemy that shielded you from the blast at the cost of himself. He knew your reputation. He knew you wouldn't allow that plan if he told of you. Apparently you are important to these people. Seems you bring hope to them. As if that will stop me. I merely awoke you for a moment so that we could speak. Not that you deserve such a privilege after your intolerable disrespect.
"Why?"
To give you another chance to claim loyalty to me. You have witnessed the power of my newest servant. Not even you could best his creations. Accept the fact that you cannot win. Repent your crimes against me and save yourself and your people from total anhilation. I need only ask him to create more and shall place where I choose. At the foot of your bed whilst you sleep. Or perhaps in the home of one of those comely ladies that you enjoy the company of? Or maybe I shall fill Venezzia with them?
"No..."
Please, for me?
Even through his bleary vision, Alixenus could see that Fate had taken the form of one of his more recent female companions.
You couldn't say no the last time you saw me, why must you deny me now?
She traced her cleavage gently with her hand.
Just do as I ask, I'll give you everything you want, and more.
"You, are not...her. Be, gone"
Please my Lord, it would do me no little pleasure
"BEGONE" A great heat seemed spiral down the arm that Alixenus had managed to outstretch before him. Fate back away some and resumed her true face.
Such a fire in your heart, misspent and misdirected. You had your chance. I shall take great delight in turning you and all you hold dear to dust. Though no doubt you will do that yourself in another human attempt to defeat me. Now sleep.
The Pheonix began to flap again as consciousness left Alixenus and his vision faded to black. _______________________________________________________________________________ OOC: For the love of the Gods tell if I got anything wrong! I feel like I'm trampling all over Thanatos and Sandromin's prior body of work. As for the Kaltedes question, I was working under the assumption that he was a Knight with only the very barest knowledge of Alkhemistry. No doubt that is a glaring error of some kind? |

OOC: I'm getting lonely waiting for the start of the expedition. Anyone care to join me soon?
Sandromin awoke. Years had passed in his mind, and his abilities had grown exceptionally.
His body had strengthened in his meditation via the logipriest powers that kept him in a catatonic state. All the events he experienced, all the time that had passed; all of it had affected him mentally and physically. However, his body had aged a decade as a result of the training. Instead of being in his forties, he was now in his fifties; but it was no major problem, as his lifespan was roughly 300 years.
Despite the negative effects of the training, Sandromin had picked up many skills during his journey; he effectively had trained against beings many times stronger than him, tackled foes that would destroy villages in their wake, and he had tuned his power over auras so that he could move and change earth itself.
...
... Where... am I? Wait... I remember... I'm... in the Kalter groves. I was meditating... and...
The memories suddenly rushed in. He remembered everything from the past... ten years?... no, it was shorter than that. It must have been only a couple of hours, yet his body certainly felt a little older. It felt stronger though, as if he was full of power.
"The logipriests were right. Their training lasted for a decade, and it's given me... strength. Everything they said was true I suppose. Well, I must go an-" began Sandromin, who was suddenly interrupted.
You. Man of power, leader of the Sandmen, champion of Freedom. You will be stopped by Fate herself.
"I beg to differ, you vile being. Whoever you are, wherever you are, know this: Fate will fail, and Freedom will hold true," remarked Sandromin.
Whatever you say, it does not matter. I am here to end you and take your life in the name of Fate!
With that, a man cloaked in black appeared instantly out of thin air. In his left hand, there was a dagger of adamantium. In his right, there was a sword of fire. Instantly, Sandromin recognized the intent to kill in this 'man'. This was a perfect opportunity to test his newfound strength; Sandromin readied his sword and prepared for the fight.

Or I may start something back in Venezzia. Decisions decisions, well the Iliad wasn't written in a day.
Come on down to Arteum for some fun in the sun! We have... sand... and, erm... um... sun! Did I mention the sand? And if you're truly up to it, join us at our oases resort towns, where all the women go to get their tans!
*Hopefully, my ploy to lure Alixenus into Arteum will work... Soon, I will finally have company to join me on the expedition... soon...* |

Frost stood on the hill of his dreams, staring out at the perpetual expanse. Every where he looked there was a constant battle between the living and the dead.and the black sky gave an illumination that both mesmerized and terrified frost, a black light that cast a cold warmth over him. Like the sun had died yet...it still shone. Frost couldn't help but stare up at the inky blackness that threaded to swallow him like a great beast. Even as the sounds of men and women dying bit at his ears he still stared. Maybe he was waiting for the strange being? Or for all the sound to stop? He did not know. Frost finally decided to sit and stare over the battle. It was not more than a few days ago that this vision would have terrified him. Sending him into a mind set of a frightened child. But now...it was only tiresome. The hill and the death. Like some kind of sick joke being played over and over again by a twisted jester. Now he only stared with a blank expression...until the very earth shook. The force was so strong it knocked frost onto his back. As he tried to stand another spasm hit and knocked him down again. He tried to stand yet again and this time he braced himself for the shaking. Staring out over the plains of battle he saw that all had stopped. The dead, the living. Everything had stopped. Not a sound. Not a movement from anything. It looked although they were all staring some where. Frost followed their eyes to the city. The horrible scar that cut the sky. He noticed just how large it truly was. He could see the enormous towers jutting up into the sky like fingers trying to grasp at nothing. Even when being so close to the city he never noticed how large it was. Miles long and even miles tall the city was in itself a giant. Dwarfing anything frost had ever seen. Even the ruins of other cities could not compare to the amazing site. Frost stared truly taking in the city for what it was, a marvel of engineering, a masterpiece. But then another powerful quake happened and to frosts terror towers that had stood for generations began to fall slowly through the air. The quakes grew in frequency happening seconds apart until something...emerged...from the ground. On either side of the city. A hand and an arm torn of the lands rocks and soil sending a shower of debris flying miles into the air with amazing force. Then another arm. The two appendage braced the ground and started to push upward. An as they did more and more of the once unmolested city began to fall to the ground. Frost stared on in utter horror as shoulders rose out from underneath the massive super structures. The arms pushed until finally the top of a head emerged from soil. It was still. staring out across the lands. Then with another massive heave and push the torso of a true giant reveled itself to the world. A monster the size of a mountain had just hauled itself through the dirt and rock of the land. With a city attached to its back. Yet it seemed that it did not even care. It started to pull the rest of it's body out of the ground as men fell to their knees and prayed, cried, fell on their blades or simply stopped. And the dead, seeming becoming sane again...began to cheer...a twisted hooray of dead voices, rising to the sky in knowledge that their greatest weapons had arisen. And as the giant heaved itself to its feet and stood like a mountain they still cheered. They cheered for what seemed like years, but was only seconds. And when their horrible battle cry ended... The giant gave one of its own. First...it was low, a rumble, barley within the threshold of hearing, but it shook the grounds like thousands of small earthquakes, until it began to rise in strength. The rumble became a roar as loud a mountain crumbling. As loud as every thunderous explosion that had ever wracked the sky. It was like heaven had came tumbling down through the sky and had shattered on the ground in a symphony of destruction. Frost had to cover his ears, and even then he felt the warm caress of blood on his hands as his ear drums ruptured from the terrifying roar. It was so unbearable that frost let out his own scream, not of triumph, but of fear and pain. And even as he fell to his knees in pain he saw that the giant had continued his victory roar. Frost knew then...that the world shaker, the destroyer, the end of all life... Had risen...and he knew that the war that was about to be waged, was just a way to stall the inevitable... If the beast could merely shout and bring men to their knees, what could it do when it simple walked? Or even stomped on the ground? Was there any hope of ever defeating this thing? Or was it all just lunacy? Frost doubled over and began to weep like a child as blood flowed freely from his ears and the screams of dying men resounded one hundred fold. He could feel the earth shutter under every step the giant took in stride.and he was ready to die there. As an ant, crushed under foot by some horrible child. But then it all stopped again. Even the blood from his ears. He looked up with a tear trailed face and saw something glorious. Half of the sky was lit golden, as thousands, no...millions of men and women charged toward the giant. Great ships flew through the air hurling great orbs of destruction and righteous vengeance on the dead. He watched as giants, living battering rams ,crushed their enemies. As ranger and vanguard and hunters struck down their foes. As men in loose garb flowed from enemy to enemy. He watched as cannons of boiling water scolded the very muscle away from the dead. And flags of nations flew. He saw, even the ancient heraldry of his ancestors flying with those of nations he had never seen. Frost looked on as the great army crashed like a wave against the giants own host. And in frost heart, he felt many things. Pride. Joy. Sadness for those that died. Anger for those that killed them...but most importantly...he felt hope. |

"Now Franklin, care to explain to me what's going on, and why we have a giant in our compound?"
"Brutus wants to help people be free." The man looked at the giant, then to Franklin. "He's being quite serious." The man nodded. "Sir giant," the man started. "Brutus. Name Brutus." Brutus corrected. "Sir Brutus," the man stared again. "Just Brutus." Brutus corrected again The man sighed. "Brutus," the man waited for a moment, waiting for another interruption. "Got it right." Brutus stated happily. "Brutus, I understand that you and Franklin here must have been through a lot, especially if the first son was wounded and you brought young Sara." "Brutus threw a cannon." The giant said reassuring that he had been through quite a lot. The man looked at Franklin for conformation. Franklins simply gave a smile. "Yes, well. I'm sure you want to rest. If you would mind I would like to discuss something's with my good friend Franklin." The giant looked to his portly friend to see if it was alright. Franklin nodded. "You deserve a rest Brutus. It's the least we can do. I'll come to you when our little chat is done." Brutus nodded and turned away. Brutus looked back at Franklin for a moment then went off to see if any one around needed help of any kind. |

What have we accomplished today? Nexhawk considered morosely while sitting atop Fel'ir. Only partially demolished a terrifying army of golems. What have we lost? Scores of Venezzians, Diyadians, and possibly both respective rulers. Contemplating that, the Ashborn threw a sorrowful gaze at Alexinus that was unconsciously slumped on his own mount.
The following has caught Nexhawk by quite a pleasant surprise.
Alexinus woke up from his lifeless slumber, coughing heavily. He forcefully exhaled a cloud of bloody smoke and gray ash. His eyes shot open, staring straight in front of him, as if he observed something Nexhawk didn't. In that moment, a myriad of fleeting emotions played out and exchanged across Alexinus' face: wonder, anger, doubt, defiance... And then he drifted back into the black dream of lost consciousness.
Worried and confused, Nexhawk reached out and brought his hand close to the man's lips. Alexinus breathed in and out very calmly. With relief, the Ashborn wiped magma-like sweat that accumulated on his forehead. Thank Sol'Krin he's alive! Let's hope the same can be said for Thanatos... __________________________________________________________________________
Sol'Krin floated high above Dustia, cloaked from view in a sun's firestorm. He pondered over the battle with the Void, and it bothered him greatly. The fact that this new god could absorb virtually everything, even other gods' power...was quite hard to comprehend. He hoped, however, that there was a catch, that the Void's abilities came with a price. But what is it?
And then, Sol'Krin felt something call to him. Something beckoned to the god, asking for help, begging to be released... He reached out to the source and realized that it was a mote of his own endless energy, trapped somewhere. Sol'Krin established a connection...and was instantly assaulted by a presence of many other entities. It didn't take the Reaper to understand that they were souls; however, there was something that sent these souls panicking in turmoil, hurrying around in fear of that something...
The Void.
Sol'Krin was linked to his energy that was devoured by the Void during that fateful battle! Curiously enough, he felt that mote stir; he was in full control of his energy, even if it were within the Void... With a thought, he could navigate it through the endless abyss of imprisoned souls and stolen energies. He could will the fiery energy to explode, sending the new god's insides into pure chaos...
Instead, Sol'Krin severed the connection, for he felt another presence, outside of the Void this time. It was Nak'Sora...and Sol'Krin was not taking any chances, and it was best to disappear before he was discovered. Still, the revelation that the sun's energy inside the Void was under his control gave Sol'Krin hope that he could one day use it to his advantage and the abomination's downfall. All in due time... All in due time.
//OOC: Thanatos, I hope you do not object against this course of events. We gotta have some counter against the Void's OPness! And if you don't, please don't make it so that someone instantly discovers this connection between Sol'Krin and his energy. //End of OOC\\
