I love it, I don't recall ever doing something like this and it's highly enjoyable, reading through the threads woven by your fellow writers and watching how their strands are affected by yours.
I suppose we lost the "for DUST 514" thing a while ago but in essence, we're still with it. The whole idea of a universe captured in a universe is present in our story, right? Of fighters, fighting for fighters, who are fighting for the big wigs, who see the deaths of millions as merely the loss of a pawn on their grand chessboard.
The little stories of battles, such as the scrabble between Alixenus and Armok, and then the panning out to observe the bigger picture in terms of the whole world, and more importantly, the effect this little battle has had on the universe.
We've captured DUST in an ever evolving universe of our own, gentlemen. |

I will stand down when we find out what is causing that strange light, how we stop the zombies and what the hell radiation is!

Meanwhile, Thanatos and I are discussing many things. I shall begin with my questions.
"Indeed, what ever did happen to the archnecromancer? Furthermore, I would like to know very much about the entire zombie incident and invasion of the golems that caused it. Who has been causing this mayhem? As you can see, we went to the trouble of coming here just because of this entire incident. Also, Alixenus, you may stand down, as there is no immediate threat. However, you may keep your weapons on you."
It seems we have trouble brewing.
OOC: Who likes this so far? Also, I'm going to be taking this entire forum thread and making it into an forever-growing book. Who likes that idea? And finally, I've decided that we shall base our nations off our heroes, and it shall be much like a saga.
Of course. Let me start with the Archnecromancer. He was slain centuries ago. After Ignak defeated the last of the Mor'tuums and became a Lich, the area was only a dead husk, true badlands. My people were always here hiding from him. What Ignak did not know was what his constant battles had unearthed. That beam of light you saw, was part of a power source underground. It's called iyo. It had caused the continent to raise up from the ocean. For centuries he sat at the edge amassing more and more power waiting for another nation to come after him, while the Diyad Kingdom slowly developed. He waited but boats never came. He never realized that they couldn't. He had gone mad. Iyonic radiation is very deadly. My people evolved and became immune to its negative effects. He on the other hand survived off of his evil magick alone. The radiation weakened both his body and mind. When Diyad grew to a decent size, the 7th king, King Lionus III led an army to end him once and for all. He wielded the famous adamantium saber that I wield today. However this was not like normal adamantium, it was stronger and lighter due to iyonic radiation. The battle with Ignak's undead army was long and difficult but that saber allowed Lionus III to fight his way through. Ignak's skin was frail from the radiation and his death was swift. Afterwards the kingdom expanded the whole continent and scholars had discovered iyo. It became our primary energy source. It also led to the development of Alkhemistry. This allowed people called Alkhemists to manipulate matter to the molecular level. Iyo helps amplify an alkhemist's ability significantly. With iyo we gained knowledge, and technology evolved at an exponential rate. But now for the problem at hand. It seems we share a common purpose. The hand of Fate has practically slapped us across the face. Years ago my historians discovered a horrible truth. Ignak was not the first Archnecromancer. Actually one of hundreds of reincarnations of the first. Each one significantly stronger than the other. Whenever one is defeated their power is stored within a book called the Dark Arcanum. They also carry a piece of a device needed to decipher the book. Every time a person became an AN(abbreviation), they would already be powerful. With the book in their possession they would, at least at this point, be akin to gods. I've devoted my short decade as king to finding each piece. I've found all except one. If there are zombies that means somewhere in this world someone has already become an AN. Ignak had special spells and curses cast before his demise. Ones that can only be activated by him or his successor. They can be stopped if only I could find the last piece of the damn cipher. To add insult to injury the pieces are hexed. By the time I realized it it was too late. Now I'm cursed. The evil magicks slowly poison my mind. My will was once strong but I am growing weaker. Sometimes the evil takes over completely and I have to force it back. Without that last piece I can't remove them. I fear what decisions I may make under their influence. Or worse, how someone can manipulate me to aid in their own evil goals. So I present you with an opportunity. If you can help me find the last piece I should be able to cure myself and these zombies. But you better decide fast because it seems we are running out of time.
[OOC How's that for backstory, plot/character progression, and introducing another character that can possibly become an antagonist. P.S. little manipulation hint was for you Xavier. Also funny you mention book. Before I stepped in I was up at 6:00AM reading every single post like a book and was thoroughly entertained. Before I got to the end I had somewhat planned Diyad to be my nation in the badlands and by the time I got there it seemed that the timing was perfect. Talk about hands of Fate |

OOC: Well, specifying the strengths and weaknesses would be fairly detrimental for most of the game. However, the abilities will be revealed through the plot of this. I'm thinking nation-hero hybrid, where we have the main heroes with the plot revolved around them and the nations which are affected by the plot; does that sound good?
"So that is the situation you say? Well, we shall see to it that the last piece of this vile puzzle be found."
In the desert capital of Arteum, the soldiers prepare as they receive word of what has occurred. The ides are beginning, and the tide of war is seen clearly throughout the nations.
There looms an unforeseen threat over Dustia, and it seems there will be war. The cards shall be fully seen by everyone.
In the meanwhile, Sandromin begins his journey to find the new AN... |

Alixenus had removed his lower faceguard for the negotiations now that Thanatos had begun speaking, but this only revealed his mouth and still hid most of his expression. At first his natural, human curiosity caused him to hang off of the King's every word. However as Thanatos continued the light in Alixenus eyes dimmed as the talk became more and more esoeteric.
"What is a molecule?" He thought to himself "This is just getting rediculous. This Iyo may be a lucrative opportunity, but he's just trying to throw us off, or he speaks of witchcraft. To hell with this, he may aswell be playing Vivaldi to a mountain frog!"
Alixenus' mouth turned into a grimace [a la Judge Dredd] as this train of thought continued. By the end of Thanatos' soliloqui he was satisfied with the response he had recieved, but of course needed to point out an obvious problem.
"Well where do we start looking for this new Archnecromancer? I hardly have the resources to launch some grand expedition to the ends of the earth. And just to keep this at the forefront, the Logipriests are still languishing, suffering on their island. And how do you suggest we grab this last piece of your cipher without being afflicted?"
Then more urgently:
"How long do I have until this 'ray-di-a-shone' poisons me to the point of needing a doctor?"
Alixenus was not just going to walk out of here with no idea of what to do next. He wanted a plan and at least some idea of the disposition of the enemy, even if it did mean leaving Venezzian in the hands of it's unpaid (but capable) militia. Then he thought:
"If Thanatos asks, I 'll be more than happy to end his suffering...Why am I so determined to kill him?" |

Thanatos removes his crown and rubs his head. He is clearly exhausted, and appears far older than he actually is. As Alixenus speaks he realizes just how much more advanced his kingdom actually was. He decided to speak in simpler terms to avoid confusion or misunderstanding.
"The AN has not revealed his or her self as of now. We have no sure way of finding him. This also means that as of now they pose no immediate threat. The piece of the cipher on the other hand is vital. And we do have the means to find that. It is the key to ridding ourselves of the golems and zombies"
He leads the two into a room. The room is initially dark. The only thing that pierces the darkness is a glowing globe of Dustia hovering above a spiraling structure.
"This device has indicated the final piece lay somewhere far east. We can't distinguish exactly where. I do know however that it would be found in an area that is generally dark. My people have not left this land for quite some time. We have not been father east than here. But you two have. From my knowledge the piece would be located somewhere where perhaps there would have been several odd or supernatural occurrences. Something along the lines of phantoms or agonized souls. A place subject to rumors or folktales. Can you recall any place like that?" |

Xavier looks at Sandromin, then to Alixenus.
"Finally good to see you two... face, to face. But enough with the pleasantries. You say an area prone to magic and superstition? The Logipriests. With all their voodoo an all. Not saying that I believe, but,..."
Xavier shakes his head.
"The zombies, they attacked my northernmost settlement. The men there are dead. The women are dead. The children, dead. But the worst part, the dead become alive. The zombies feast on others, and they become zombies as well! And can you kill them? No, they get right back up no matter how many blows. My cities are fortifying for the rest, but I'm afraid that I, that none of us, will hang on much longer."
He stares intently at all the eyes in the room.
"The zombies originated at the Logipriest Nation, so it's source must be there as well. A temple. Does anyone know the grandest temple on their island?" |

Xavier hadn't even finished talking when Alixenus began discussing emergency exfiltration with his attendants outside the map room. As the attendant runs off, plate armour clanking down the halls, Alixenus turns to address his only co-workers in the entire world. Anger and Fear evident in his voice.
"Oh by the great maker I feared something like this would happen. Now, I know full well that this is one of those 'fight together or die alone' moments and I would personally like to wring the life out of the AN, but Venezzia needs me. If those zombies don't head into the mountains they'll be at the walls of city even if I leave right now. I may trust the people with a conventional foe but this is.... WHAT IS THIS? *throws his helmet on the floor* My Lords I am sorry but this cipher and AN will have to wait. I did not save my city from Armok just to lose it to a bunch of Tree loving cannibals! I will be more than happy to contribute troops to the defence of your homes, but the zombie threat ends now."
Sandromin moved to console the frenzied Venezzian, but Alixenus just bats him away with a heavy gaunlet and points his hamaxe at the Dwarf when he made a similar motion.
"Do not try to stop me, this is for your benefit as much as mine. Try to stop me and I will retract the offer of aid. Zombies first, AN later."
Alixenus regarded Thanatos with nothing but contempt as he picked up his helmet and affixed it to his head. Thanatos may not have been the cause, but Alixenus was certainly going to hold him responsible. The Lord-Lieutenant then turned and stormed out the room, his half-cape billowing about his shoulders, barking orders to the remaining attendants. The echo chamber in his helmet made him sound every inch like the God of War.
"BY THE GREAT MAKER I WILL SLAUGHTER THEM ALL!" |

Xavier writes two letters, and hands it to the captain.

Thanatos stares blankly into space, as if he had not heard a word. By his facial expressions Sandromin could plainly see that he was troubled, or worried.
"It is good that you seek peace. Peace is of course an unattainable goal. But oft those who work towards it make the world a better place. I am your ally. As your ally I am obligated to protect your interests as well as mine. My advice to you is this. It is crucial to know the difference between your allies and people you trust. I am sure the Logipriests are a fine people indeed. Alixenus is without a doubt loyal. A fool, but loyal none the less. What I'm getting at is.... be wary of Xavier. I didn't want to address this at the time, but I wonder how did he get to my map room? It is impossible to get to this kingdom without my balloons, and as you recall this nation is protected by that beam of iyo, completely invisible. Not only that but he somehow managed to make it into my palace and through my throne room without my guards stopping him, or at least alerting me. But we can discuss this later. A day's journey you say? Well that won't be a problem here."
The room stops at a screeching halt. Before them stands a vast underground laboratory. Spiraling structures and whirring machines fill the room. There are people and machines manipulating iyo to create different inventions. Thanatos leads Sandromin through the lab to an area where a large structure stands. It's shape resembles a spade or a round arrow. It is visibly powered by the blue iyonic energy. There are visible tentacle-like limbs protruding from it's bottom and sides that seem to be able to detract back inside. At the center of the the bottom, is a blue glowing orb. Sandromin guesses that this may be the structure's source of power.
"With all of our advances in technology, the least of which have been in weaponry. What I am about to show you is not just a weapon, but the pinnacle of all invention. It is of course, modestly named... The Pinnacle of All Invention (PAI for short). It is, in a sense, everything. It is a vehicle capable of great speed. It can travel any terrain. From land, to air, and even underwater. It is equipped with the most advanced iyonic weaponry. Capable of devastating buildings and terrain, to killing or disabling waves of troops at a time. Because of iyo it is also able to repair itself as well as other things. Your day's journey has just become approximately 8 minutes. Now we must head to the Logipriest grand temple."
He raises his saber once more, this time the blue markings appear under the feet of the two. They seem to form a circle bearing complex lines and shapes. A blue transparent wall surrounds them. The feeling is almost ethereal as they seem to float out of their bodies and through the walls of the vessel. Once inside Thanatos mans the control interface. The floor below the vessel appears to be some type of elevator as it takes them even deeper below the laboratory. Revealing a tunnel that leads out of the landmass. Thanatos flies the ship out the tunnel and sets a course for the Logipriest nation. |

Below us sprawls the Venezzian coastline, teeming with villages... And meat.
I lick my lips.
"Fresh meat, my friends."
I turned. Behind me stood a veritable army of zombies. The dwarf villages we ravaged, once persuaded by the offer of fresh meat, rose from the dead to join our grisly crusade. It was dark; dusk.
I could smell the meat of the Verezzians. I had a fleeting memory, of a Venezzian captain, of tickling with vines, of unfattening chocolate... And it faded, quailed under my need for meat. I turned towards my companions.
"We attack at dawn. The sun will be at our backs. The meat will be soft, just waking from the dreams."
A logipriest came up to me. She was female. Another memory stirred, of a warm bed, her warm limbs... This too was snuffed, but instead by cruel reality. She was stained with blood, her hair matted, her fine features distorted by a grimace, the hunger that ached in all of us, insatiable.
"What kind of dreams... Do fresh meat dream"?
For a fleeting moment, I regained my old nature, my old composure.
"Darling, the humans dream of hope. Of perfection... Unattainable beauty. They dream of love, of lust, of passion. Dreams are their refuge when everything around them becomes a nightmare."
She looked at me strangely. The bloodlust in both of us was subdued.
"So when we assault them... When we eat them... They will dream?"

OOC: First off, I just want to thank you guys for letting Alixenus do his own thing. I know I have a tendency to write large sections and go off on wild tangents, but I'm glad this latest one didn't break anyone's plot ideas to the point of them needing to ask me to calm the f*** down. Second, I'm so glad I found this thread, it's helped me to realise the joy of writing a narrative again, and through such a fun format too!
Right, now that all that's out of the way, back to the saga of Dustia |

[Narration section, just read it in an epic voice]
And so the stage was set.
The Old soldier, storming off to war again, filled with fury and terror. Not knowing or caring what death and deadly destiny had in store for him. Not once stopping to think of his own safety, or to burden others with his duty. Willing to wipe out another race just to save his own. All for the love of a flag and a faceless crowd.
The madman in the loincloth, spending the night in his empire of blood and ashes. Clawing at the walls of his own mind. Not knowing of the role he had yet to play.
The Furtive and Manipulative Dwarf, so easily forgotten by other men. So easily turning every disaster to his advantage. Like a predator he stalks our players, forcing them around like pieces on a board. Power is his desire, but to what end? and does he realise every consequence of that end?
The tortured King, exhausting his entire life to help others. Striving for good and peace only to be perpetually punished for it. His efforts brought salavation and untold prosperity, at the cost of a curse from the hand of fate. Again he rushes to the aid of others. The goal is the same, the people different. But this time, he is not alone.
The noble sandman. A diplomat, a peacemaker, so desperately trying to hold together the alliance he had worked so hard for, only to see it unravelling before his eyes as death himself seeks to claim this world. He is perhaps their salvation, if only they could see it.
The sun sets on Dustia again, but the morn will bring no joy for the living. The dawn will bring only blood, blast and fire. The dawn will bring only steel, wrath and war. The dawn will bring only death |

We are the 42nd Collective, a mechanical race. We are a relatively small faction (weakness: any faction with vast tracts of land), but are advanced beyond our time (strength: command of highly advanced tech) . We come from a completely artificial realm (terrain weakness 1: any untamed land, terrain strength 1: modernized areas, base terrain: a completely artificial realm with complex pathways, highly modernized and under heavy surveillance). Our millitary forces consist of computerized mechs, as do our people (terrain weakness 2: areas with strong magnetic activity, frequent lightning strikes, and high amounts of water; terrain strength 2: flatlands and plains), with our infantry consisting of specialized androids. Civilian units of the collective have a degree of artificial intelligence while having a direct relay to the Collective, with most combat units being dependent on the Collective to attain co-ordinartion (terrain weakness 3: anywhere very far from the central seat of the hive mind, terrain strength 3: anywhere very close to the current seat of the hive mind). Our prime directive: Observe, document, and conquer. Metal is better than meat!

OOC: That is very acceptable. Read up on current affairs however before establishing yourself (for obvious reasons). I love all this narrative. The short story is coming together very well... I just love it. |

{ooc} I was wondering if it was alright if I could join, I don''t really have a nation Idea but I do have a hero idea that could be interesting so to anyone who reads this and thinks "who is this chump?!" Let me try, please, at least I'm trying right? so here it goes and I also apologize in advance for Alixenus{ooc}
On a hill over watching the advancing Alixenus, a single large silhouette vaguely human stands atop a hill, but a better characterization would be "giant." standing at at least 10 feet tall with massive, powerful limbs and strong wide shoulders, but its body wasn't the only massive thing about it, it was covered head to toe in heavy armor more suited to a siege machine than a man, even equipped with large horns atop its head, much like a bettering ram.
Suddenly without provocation the beast rears it's head back and let's out a bellow as loud and powerful as thunder. The beast then lowers its head and charges down the hill knocking over a small tree on its way down, a stampede of one charging straight at Alixenus with horns aimed at his chest
{ ooc} sorry I put words in your mouth Alixenus, it's just that you're the only character who I could think of being on a march to your lands, and I also apologize for setting up a place that I made, so again sorry. P.s. I hope this is alright{ooc} |

Just as Thanatos had said, the PAI had arrived at the Logipriest grand temple in only 8 minutes. As they exited the PAI and entered the temple Thanatos thought to himself about the task at hand. The Logipriests would never touch Diyad and neither would the golems. Was he truly acting on his own accord? Or perhaps instead being forced along a destined path by the hands of Fate. There was no doubt about it. Even a child could feel the evil energies that filled the dark corridors like a vile stench. He had wondered why Sandromin had not said a a word since their departure. The silence had made him uneasy. Without a steady conversation to keep him occupied, he would be forced to listen to the voices. The voices that told him to drive his saber into Sandromin's heart. The voices that told him to turn back. The same voices that told him to surrender unto them. Memories and thoughts that did not belong to him ever invaded his mind.
Please Fate, please! I cannot hold on much longer. I need more time. JUST SOME MORE TIME PLEASE DAMMIT! FOR FATE'S SAKE SANDROMIN JUST ONE WORD!
His own voice by now slowed down to a whisper. Like a child adrift in a raging sea. At least for now the sea grew silent.
Now is not the time. We are so close to reaching our goal. I can end this.
By this time they had reached the main offering room. In the center lay an alter. Upon the alter is the final piece of the cipher.
"Idiots. All along the Logipriests had this in their possession. Oblivious to what truly lay before them. Using it as some type of offering."
Fully aware of the hex that was on each piece of the cipher, Thanatos stood near the entrance alongside Sandromin. He waited for him to speak, for he knew what his next action would be.

"Captain! Land ho!"
"Alright then, bring it closer, then drop the anchor."
Xavier was ready. After a long week of traveling, he was finally at the Capital. He could smell the smell of victory, one step closer to his goal.
The anchor was dropped, a raft was loaded, and search parties were formed. All were told to go in the same place, the temple. The temple was quite easy to see however, since it was the tallest building there.
At the temple, all of them, which is about 40, were shocked at what they saw. A lot of 'oos' and 'ahs' were said when they gazed at the magnificent machine before them.
What in hell is this thing? I have seen nothing like it. No matter, it means they are here, which is not good, not good at all.
Xavier points at his engineers.
"You two. Figure out how this thing works."
They give a swift nod, and start to prod it and try to get inside.
Xavier, somewhat satisfied, moves in to collect his prize.
"All right, gentlemen! I will go alone into the temple. You all shall come when I say the word. Understood?"
There was a mass chorus of "Yes sirs'" and "Aye's."
Xavier enters the temple. It's entrance is dark, as if a curse put upon it. The walls are covered with vines, and are starting to crumble. He sees Thanatos and Sandromin.
"Gentlemen! Not expecting you two here! That is a most wonderful toy you have outside." |

OOC. Ooh so much activity. Who knew a logizombie apocalypse would bring everyone out of the woodwork. Be not afeared Mr. Pyrus, I know how to deal with you. Oh and a machine faction now? Venezzia is starting to feel underequipped. http://www.quickmeme.com/meme/3ssdgb/
Edit in response to Thanatos: Trust me, I wasn't planning on being in Venezzia this fast either, but Pyrus somewhat forced my hand. We could put it down to "unseasonably good winds" in my case. In fact, just to ease the continuity issue, we'll say that my subplot is occuring just under a week after yours. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________
"Oh I do not have the patience for this today! Elephanta break!"
The company of men following Alixenus obediently followed his orders. They formed a funnel shape formation with Pikes at the end and Hamaxes ready on the sides. The Giant would run into the funnel and either be skewered or have his legs broken when he tried to get out of the funnel. But Alixenus did not join the formation. Instead, he charged the giant with his Hamaxe in both hands!
At last second, Alixenus slid to one side and tripped up the Giant with a mighty hammer blow. The Giant fell and slid to the end of the funnel face first. Rolling over, he was greeted with swords and Hamaxes. A very angry looking Lord lieutenant was standing on his chest; a sword in one hand, pointed at the giant's throat. In the other, a large bag of coin.
"That's one way to introduce yourself beast. Now you either join my payroll or die. Your choice. But if you take too long, we'll break your legs and leave you for whatever is making that groaning sound in the bushes" |

Unbeknownst to Xavier, PAI is equipped with a security system. A well placed shock leaves his men incapacitated outside of the temple. As he hears footsteps approaching their position. Thanatos quickly makes his way to the piece, leaving less than a metre between him and it. By the time Xavier enters the room, Thanatos is pleased with his advantages in case of a possible conflict.
"Marvelous isn't it? It is the single greatest invention my alkhemists have ever come up with. You seemed to arrive just in time." Consider our golem and zombie threat eliminated. I have the Dark Arcanum ready to dispel the magicks of the previous AN."
The fact that Thanatos has been rubbing the hilt of his saber with his thumb goes unnoticed. The markings glowing a dim blue as not to draw attention. He waits to hear Sandromin's response. |

And as I walk down the corridors in heavy thought, and we had spotted the last piece... I had begun to dwell on my thoughts...
Finally, arranging all the thoughts in my head, I finally utter my words:
"So, the AN... Is it you? I dwelled upon my thoughts, and I've come to the conclusion that you very well may be the Archnecromancer... At first, it was the subtle hints of your madness that put me off... then I began to think. Is it you? An awfully rude question, I know, but there dwells some thoughts in my mind. Furthermore... I feel we're being followed... And also, must we take the cipher to Lavania to destroy the pieces?"
As this occurs, there is a faint noise that can be heard through the temple.
"What must we do with these pieces? Also... this seems a little too easy..."
Suddenly, the doors shut upon us and we're locked inside the chamber...
"What is this... we're locked in... It seems we're in a mighty fine predicament... And I hear the reception party coming for us." |
