Day one: First game was incredibly fun. Player academy put me up against people in the same gear i was wearing and my skill showed. First person shooters give people with some relative skill a good time. 44/9 out the door of the academy and to the bears. Played another six games and went to ask questions on the forums. Was dirrected to find a corp and also to "get gud".
Day two: Joined a corp. Played a few games with them and had a relatively better time in general. Corp logged off after a few matches that we were able to play and I was left solo. So after a few games of getting the **** kicked out of me I said **** it and logged off. I dont need to beat my head into a wall.
Day three: Learned to fly a dropship! I took to these things rather well and have been complimented several times on the way I fly them. However I still lost quite a few ships to av rail tanks sitting back nowhere to be seen. Lost most of my isk this way despite having fun flying around the maps. No points to speak of from flying these ships however as nobody will stay in the guns and I dont have access to anything more advanced than gorgons and vipers.
Day four: met nyan san...all ******* day...Quit out after an hour of playing feeling like I had been barred from the game.
Day five: specced into advanced combat rifles. Still forced to play with lower tier rifles due to cost per fit and lack of steady income in game due to player lockout from even pub matches.
Day six: Realised most of my sp investment was somewhat pointless. Rather depressed about the game in general
Day seven: Learned that I dont like tanks. Or heavies...or anything with over 600 armor in general. Finally hit weekly sp cap.
Start of week two: Swapped my tank modules out for recharge things. Same time until death but could actually pop in and out of cover to at least defend an objective. Cant find squad to play with.
week two day two: find out that the rdv driver is an *******. He drops my dropships three times in a match from at least 50 meters up, killing them each time on impact...then when i get one in the air, comes in carrying another vehicle for someone else and swats me out of the sky. I take his plate number and intend on breaking his ship at some point. Stomped by better gear all day long. Managed to get a few kills here and there. K/d has dropped below levels that are acceptable to me.
Week two day three: log on and notice I dont have enough isk to restock my ten suits i keep in stock. Remember the night before and try and run free kits to get some isk. First three matches are against queue synced corps. Constantly stomped in the face over and over. Log off highly frustrated.
Week two day four: Finally get in a squad with a few players. Have three wonderful games where I was able to support my team with my commando. Got to rep some people. Made enough isk to finish out refits. Squad dispersed after a few matches. Proceeded to get my ass kicked and sent hatemail from teammates telling me to get better. Funny, I was top of the endgame report on that team...400 points total. Yay...
Week two day five: Decided to try tanks for a little while. Rdv driver dropped my tank on the roof of some building...got there after a friendly took it and drove off. Proceeded to run into combat without vehicle and just let the ****** have the vehicle. See my vehicle explode...die a little inside.
Week two day six: Get spawnkilled in the deployment less than 20 seconds into the match by a dropship running xt1 missiles. Wonder how he got there that quickly. This set the tone for the day. Cant find a squad most of the day. Ended up quitting very early, the rest of my experience playing out that this game just doesnt want me in it.
Final day of two weeks: Spec into level 4 combat rifles and gain access to assault combat rifle. Load up a fit with the rifle and see what the thing is all about. First game I got one kill then proceeded to die 5 times in a row without my weapon fireing for some reason despite seeing the animation. Lost money. Tried again and got a few more kills, no support and still lost money. Final match, every player on my team was afking behind our deployment zone running in circles inside the ship with me and a single squad mate out fighting 3 tanks and a boatload of prototype mercs. Most were heavies. No chance to push past the line whatso ever.
The game has barred me pretty much entirely from playing and doesnt seem to get any better. To those that got here early enough to not have to deal with the **** im seeing and feeling every match that i play, your lucky. To those that are feeling the same that i am, go throw things at ccp buildings. (dont actually do that.)
To everyone else, good game...or not...this game doesnt seem to be anyway. |

That sounds like a pretty accurate rundown of a fresh mercs time in New Eden. All I can say is try Factional Warfare. Use th etime in the warbarge to squad up. You will be facing better players most of the time in FW but at least your team MIGHT be helpful. Good luck.
I spent half my ISK on gambling, alcohol and wild women. The rest I wasted.

its only decent on certain servers(oceania).
most of the proto scrub stompers do seem to be complete dicks.that cry if they ever die once in any game mode by anything "less" than proto.
the more empty servers are alot more fun.u might not find anything to shoot at in some matches but its better then getting killed over and over..just try to stay back and not run into the major slugging areas. and if u do so. make sure your coming from some where that isnt covered with gun fire. as to so u can hope to get the drop on your enemies.
mlt vets are eternal. they shall be the bane to proto scrubs everywhere...

You can chalk this up to CCP's "New Arden is a harsh place". A mentality that is dooming this game and, actually, has already doomed it to never succeeding.
Unless they get their act together. I've said it before CCP, you can get away with it in EVE. There are no games like EVE. There are lots of shooters that people can go to. All of them better right off the bat.
You gots to do so,etching about this. You don't grow an audience by making the game impenetrable. Unless, you give them an avenue to play that isn't PVP or, like EVE, you can't get the game anywhere else. |

It's more important to spec into powergrid / cpu, armor plates/shield extenders than it is to spec into suits or weapons... You can end up spending 2m sp to get your proto suit and go 'yeah everything will be awesome now' and then only have basic shield extenders / plates to put on it, or when you get the complex modules not have enough cpu/pg.
the 'easiest' way to get into this game is to run militia caldari heavies (just skill 1 point into the HMG) and save up SP while you decide what you actually want to do. |

For what it's worth I'll send you some isk in the morning after I get back from work. I notices in your post that you have access to a commando suit; try joining Commando Squad chat channel, we run squads often from there. Factional warfare is better for getting into squads, but you have no isk payout so I doubt how useful that will be to you right now.
I had the same issues as a new player too, and one of the ways I was able to turn a profit was to run a suit with an advanced uplink equipment in Ambush. Drop them down and wait for the proto stompers to muller your team. They respawn, and you profit with war points. Hardly honourable, but it's a living.
Active corps are a must. I hope things get better for you OP.

How are you spending so much you can't afford a fit?! I get that you spam vehicles but you need to watch your wallet just like IRL
Run a standard (STD) suit with STD weapons and STD/militia modules. You shouldn't be paying more than 10-15k for a fit. If you die less than 13-15 times in a match you should be making money on this.
It's e-peen bullshit running some pimped out gear in public matches (or abundance of cash), you don't need to pay 100k to increase dmg and eHP by 5%, you're rarely gonna lose by 5%. |

the 'easiest' way to get into this game is to run militia caldari heavies (just skill 1 point into the HMG) and save up SP while you decide what you actually want to do.
Cannot agree more that leveling into suits are not that important. I think I had 15 mill isk before I leveled into my first suit. I would add the basic armor/shield upgrade because it increases the HP of any suite you use regardless of the modules and is quite cheap to level up.

Feel your pain. I must be a sadist because I put up with this for months and I was new to online FPS so had no basic skills to draw from.
To add to the other advice on this forum. Let your character sit for a number of months to accumulate passive sp until you have a more reasonable amount of sp. I'd say at least 2 mill, but 4 mill will get you much further.
In the end, I still don't think the game is worth my time, but I strangely keep coming back to it after breaks on other games (all of which I found more enjoyable and much more polished.....addiction is a strange beast) |

I understand the feelings you're going through with the game. I've been playing since June 2012 and, honestly, I still get frustrated with the game at times.
I just recently won some ISK through Dust Lottery and being as I already have more ISK than I know what to do with, had said that I was going to do something right with the winnings. Opportunity presented itself and I've decided to pass the majority of the winnings on to you, maybe ease some of the frustration of losing gear to unstable pub-matches.
Check your wallet, should have a healthy sum in there.

This kind of behaviour by nyain san annoys not just new players. Matchmaking needs to take into account pre-made squads, if it doesn't already. Problem is there's probably not enough players currently to pick good matchups in a timely manner. |

Not sure if troll. But in an average non- NS pub it's easy to do ok with a starter fit. After all it's still a lobby FPS where you duck in and out of cover spraying bullets. If you are not in a terrible team you can score some kills.

I'm Sorry CCP Saberwing. You seem like a good guy, but this response is the exact blanket statements that this department of CCP has been spewing out since release. From day one there have been tons of people who explained their concerns about the NPE. What was done was, the Academy matches were shortened to only a few before throwing new players to the wolves and reworking a matchmaking system that has proven to be extremely flawed.
How long can CCP expect vague and bland statements like this to truly hold any weight? I have a feeling this generalized regurgitated mess is almost to the point of being copy and pasted to any thread that holds any real merit about the actual issues this game has. You should have refused to write such a statement to this community. It in in-genuine and insulting. "We are working on it" & "Soon TM" should be against the rules for the Dust 514 Department to even mutter.

Just a couple suggestions....
- Remove WP cap for Academy and replace it with SP cap of 2 million
- Increase passive & active gain of SP by 3x until cap of 2 million is reached
- Upon reaching 2 million SP automatic respec of all skills happens
- Block PSN account from going through Academy again after completion

They have adjusted the Academy a few times. Once because the WP need to graduate was too high and once because it was too low. There will never be the perfect spot because some players are better at FPSs than others. Yes, the adjustments were probably too much at one time in either direction but they were adjusted because of our feedback. Also any "vet" going through the Academy will have a skewed vision on why it is bad and how it can be fixed because we already know the things we think they should teach, it is difficult to determine what a new player needs.
I know this isn't EVE. In EVE the NPE lasts forever if you do the entire thing/ It takes 15 minutes just to click through as fast as you can just to get it to go away and mine still pop up on my alts every time I log in and I started them over 7 months ago. In most cases you will learn more by finding a good squad or corp than you will in the NPE part of the game. I am not saying it doesn't need to be worked on or that it is near being good but we should think about how complex this game is when compared to a casual type shooter that most are used to playing.

As much as I like to be positive or don't post I'd like to share something. I, like you have a competitive fps background, mostly on PC but I do enjoy my couch and ds3, anyways I've only been playing dust for 1 year, I had an sp gap starting out but not like the one for new players today. So before the current build (1.8) things were a bit different as far as the time to kill, if you initiated the firefight no matter your weapon you could take down a merc. Tactics made a huge difference if you could stay aware of your surroundings, use cover, flanking, cut pie around corners, your suit didn't matter too much (see SIG).
This didnt sit well with a lot of people they wanted to stack armor plates and extenders and be immune to everyone using a less expensive suit. This somehow lead us to where we are today, low weapon damage and have ehp pools. People dance side to side and bounce around (but not cool double jump/ dodge jumps like unreal tournament) making every engagement seem like cheesy arcade game.
I thrived in the low ttk environment, if you got the jump on a few mercs you could easily get a triple kill. It wasn't a twitch shooter and still relied heavily on team play, but HP wasn't the end all that it is now. I could only imagine how hard it is for new players at the moment, every suit from scout to heavy has sooooo much HP its frustrating unloading in someone's back and they just turn around and started unloading on you, element of surprise means nothing in this build, unless your a scout with a clack and shotty then it barely means anything, and is not hard to achieve.
With that said I can't play more than 2 games since the new update without logging off, and I've been crazy active for a year straight. I believe fun>realism yes, but putting more than one clip into someone's back and them still dancing is stupid, it makes the game feel sluggish and lame. I'm not trying to kill the game for you but right now I feel the time to kill is ridiculous, the new player is going to feel this the hardest.
Good luck brother.
If you have a poor gun game no proto suit can help you.
If you have a good gun game no proto suit is needed.

If you ever see me in game, feel free to send me a message or shoot me in the face. Increase WP cap of Battle Academy to at least 50,000 (after 10,000 player has access to other modes). After graduating the player is given a SP refund to properly allocate SP. No need for fancy stuff that's not really helpful, just implement my suggestion or something better.
Refunding SP is only going to make the new player think that refunding is common practice and that they can spend it all willy-nilly.

Spoken like a New Eden merc. o7

Understandable, but do you really feel that those type of statements are what the community wants to read? I mean, how does what you said provide any sort of tangible evidence that the issues are actually being addressed? I don't know. I tend to squad up with new guys/gals if they managed to figure out how to make a squad and I'm running solo.
If you want, add me to your contacts and send me in-game mail. If we are both online at the same time, I'll help you out. If you join our corp, we'll provide you with enough isk to run enough fits and purchase skills. I'm mostly the isk manager for the corp and I only help out those who are either with me or have helped me before.
If you have a headset or a mic or something, that'd be great and we can really kick into gear. I can't promise you eternal victories or that we'll never get stomped again, but I can help you get a better feel of the game and show you a few tips and tricks to staying isk positive.
I'm doing this because I hate to see new players go so early. You don't have to join my corp to squad with me, by the way. Just send me mail and we can kick it off from there.
Cheers, mate. Fight the good fight. |

Keep investing in this game because it is brutal and hard.
You can build a character that can compete in relatively short time.
Dust is fun because it is hard, because it is a challenge.
You have to work at it like a hobby, if you try to play it 110% at the start you will burn out.
Play Dust when you want a challenge.
Play other games when you want a hand holding field trip.

New player experience is terrible.
I've just had a bunch of corp makes setup their new alts using my recruiter link and we;ve been running our new recruits for the past week or so and all agree there needs to be some re-working done. we've all tried our best to get friends in to the game but they all leave after constant frustration of re[eatedly dying game after game. yeah yeah many will say HTFU but that doesn't line CCPs pockets with gol.. Aurum. we came up with a few ideas.
Rookie TDM game mode - infantry only ambush, smaller map sizes similar to chromo ambush. MLT/STD gear only.
reasoning - the maps in ambush are currently too large and vehicles are far too overpowered. have this restricted to just STD gear so vets can go still go in with them to assist but still only using basic gear. like an advanced academy battle but with experienced players similar to how most businesses now have you shadow a co-worker when you first start. also by having maps smaller new players don't end up runnign around a huge map lost before they learn how to use scanners.
Bring starter skillsets back. Sometime ago when you started you chose a pre-set 'role' which gave you certain skills already trained ot get you on your way... something like this needs to return. it requires far too many SP to get even basic items. build it into a new version of the tutorial. ensure new player have to play a match using an Assault type, Logi type and scout type. at the end of the turtoial they are asked to pick a starter role. when done so the skills are added as a reward. and yes i know this kinda defies wanting players to have all the freedome to make thier choices but it's far too much of a grind at the very start. you want new players to have a bit of a running start before the mind numbing grind starts.
if not the above then...
Double passive and active sp for 14 or 30 days for new players to help get them started.
finally. much, much, much better match making in pub matches when they do move from the rookie pond. when your collective squad has 5million SP and you get plonked into a match with a full squad of each nyain and rainbow effect all running proto suits, weapons and vehicles there is something wrong.

31M sp and still living that nightmare OP. A corp with polite people (that you can stand) is a good way to go for this game.
With the other posters suggestions, I would add that you should leave matches where you see an obvious stomp (like where the red numbers are greater than yours by 20 or so) If you queue up immediately after dropping, you wont run into that group for a few matches. There is no penalty for this, its the only way we have to control the matches that are lost.

Friend, you are not alone. This game beats up folks that are new like NOTHING I have seen before. It's throwing white belts in with black and saying, "Fight it out! it's FUN!"
It's seriously hard work.
But...
It really does help, as you saw, to have the right folks. Send me a message in game, I'll invite you into a couple of chats that have lots of great folks. (I have a shiite memory and can't remember how to spell them all, but try AQUPI, I'm pretty sure that is one of them.)
Also, check out Dust University, which has noble souls there to help new folks. YouTube has a bunch of videos by Judge Rhadamanthus, who is an awesome dropship pilot and really REALLY will save you many millions of isk.
Finally, just don't worry about spending your skill points. You are going to want a bunch of boring number things first, and it's not fun to realize you have great gear that your suit can't support. Dust U, and pretty well anyone who has been playing a bit and has your best interest in mind will tell you the same.
I'll run around with you. People make the game fun! ...and sometimes awful

I played some during Beta, but I really started playing Dust about six months ago and I had the same expierences. New Eden is harsh and it eats its young.
But there is a simple way to look at it.
More popular games like COD or BF are super fun, easy to learn, and easy to level up. However those are the same reasons those type games get boring as hell really fast. These type games bore me to tears.
Dust is not easy for new players, it is not easy to learn and skilling up is a *****. This is why it is a longevity type game.
If you hang in there a few months you will get better and start enjoying Dust more.
COD/BF are sprints. Dust is a marathon.

Honestly everytime I see stuff like this my heart goes out to those new players getting into the game. They would try to get into it for the first two weeks only to find out they are way outmatched for anything out there. I know it takes time to get good equipment.
I have 30 million skill points, I KNOW how long it takes. I will bet money that the new players will not stay around for long if they had to keep facing players with 20+ million skill points spent properly and at the same time grind out every possible skill point they can just to keep up. Just be honest with yourself, people including myself were playing since open/close beta (I miss the serenity server T_T) so we have a tremendous lead over anyone just starting out unless it was someone's alternative account. That is time I think the new players are not willing to spend.
TL:DR? Instead of driving away the new players, find ways to keep and maintain the new players.

A lot of people have been trying to make your "N"-PE better. That guy donating a ton of ISK to you is one (though for the life of me I'd like to know how much he gave you heh heh!) If you'd like, message me in game and add me to contacts, I'll be glad to squad up with you on weekends if you happen to catch me on.
To be honest, a lot of things have improved since Day 1 (No crap!) I know you haven't been here since Beta like some of us--and Beta was basically sticks and stones, mind you--so all this SP and that SP and all these skills are a pain in the ass.
I get it, I feel you. I love how so many people tell you "get better get better!"
The damn question is, HOW DO WE GET BETTER.
And how the hell do we run militia fits that STILL allow us to earn money?
1) We gain SP while we sleep, so there, that's some FREE SP for you, without working. Come back in a month, and you'll have around 600,000 SP waiting for you. --> Withi this newfound SP invest in WEAPON proficiency. Find a gun you like, first by using militia weaponry, then delve fully into that gun. Once you get Prof 5 (2.1 mil SP to cap a light weapon, I believe), thats 15% extra damage.
That means if you have a Basic/STD class weapon you get Prototype damage. That means you save money not having to buy expensive Duvolle's and/or equivalent weaponry. Of course, when you have enough money and choose to go Proto-stomping, then thats your choice to buy Proto weaponry.
2) Core Dropsuit Skills. You see that 5 tiered core skill tree after skilling into dropsuit skills? Max them out as soon as possible. These give you added bonuses to PG/CPU, Armor, and Shielding, as well as Sprint/Stamina.
I'd say focus on getting that Armor/Shielding up, that gives you extra 25% shields and 25% armor. Then, PG/CPU as that means you can fit better modules. Since militia/free fits have so little PG/CPU to start with, this goes a long way.
3) I understand you are a pilot as well--that means you fly, you can tank. Thats cool. Thats good. Basically thats your proto fit--militia tanks cost as much as a proto suit and guarantee you more armor/shielding than a Proto suit.
Arm it with the right modules and even MLT class tanks are wonderful things.
Anyways, talk to me ingame or message me.
This Russian will not disappoint.

the 'easiest' way to get into this game is to run militia caldari heavies (just skill 1 point into the HMG) and save up SP while you decide what you actually want to do. only problem with this is that no one get this information early enough during their play through. This information is really on obtainable if someone couches you or you have already played the game before. They need more servers for new players to play on or a new game mode where PVE is possible or even a grinders game mode for soloing so players can gain ISK and SP for very little. |

@ Saberwing and friends; the silent majority appreciate everything you guys do in the forelight and behind teh scenes. been here since very early closed beta myself and ive seen this game grow in almost every aspect imaginable.
@ everyone else; most of us old bitter vets will gripe and complain about how some feature or other was better some some other build, but weve all seen teh growth thats happened in this game/comunity. DUST has come a long way since she took birth on the test servers and she shows nothing but promise in her future. keep chugging along and your guaranteed an amazing adventure you wont want to miss.
@OP; i know its frustrating, happy to hear you got your adv rifle, its a good weapon in the right situation. from here, the best advice i can give you is to work on your passive skills, get your shield and armor skills up, electronics, engineering, biotic upgrades, all the things that give you new modules and/or passive stat upgrades, a basic suit and an adv weapon can take you a long way if you put the points into support skills. i sincerely hope you stick with us, and if i ever see you online, i always got an open slot in my squad/ |

This. This is why the Academy needs to be overhauled. And by "overhauled" I mean actually making it feel like an academy. Make it feel like a dedicated boot camp that allows players a chance to experiment with various fits and play styles along with a dedicated test range to test out various weapons and vehicles. That's the overhaul I'm talking about here.
Then, after acquiring approximately 1-2 million SP, the new player graduates and gets a chance to go into the shark-infested waters. Otherwise, you just get what the OP just suffered.

I dont agree , you need about 15 mil sp to be highly competitive ....you can only wear 1 fit in a match.

I love how so many people tell you "get better get better!" The damn question is, HOW DO WE GET BETTER. -Dmitri Chuikov aka axINVICTUSxa

Maken Tosch wrote:This.
I agree, but I think the 2nd tier academy should be optional with a cap more like 3-5 mill sp. The cap should be high enough that you can field a decent fit when you graduate, but low enough so those close to hitting it aren't stomping the newest players in the pool. having a higher cap also creates a larger pool of players so the matchmaker can field full teams and keep the wait times reasonable.
The first tier academy should be very short so people have a bubble to play against other players learning the controls, and figure out the very basics of the game for the first few matches. Ideally this would be replaced by a real gameplay tutorial with a story and some scripted action to set the stage for the game and introduce the fundamental gameplay concepts.
Best PvE idea ever!

Ya, you have to be a masochists to start out in this game now. Later once you're done being the gimp like in pulp fiction you'll be a sadist like the rest of the bitter vets. Also, the new PVE CCP was talking about.. their idea of soon is from now until 10 years from now, so don't hold your breath.

Biggest thing I would recommend is creating 16 accounts (PSN will allow you to create 64 from one machine, but only 16 active). Then let those accrue passive skill points. The biggest initial secret to this game is playing the time game. After about 6 months all of those accounts are strategically viable for using a variety of focused combat roles or supporting a corporation to full capacity.

New Players should really only play Skirmish imo where they can pick and choose their engagements, Domination can sometimes be cruel, and Ambush is just asking to stomp the uninitiated.
Anywho while I sympathize with most of the post, familiarity with the game helps a lot with lowering deaths (and only playing on Skirmish) as I do just fine when I screw around with my basic ammar militia medic fit alt with zero invested SP, which means DUST 514 needs much better tutorials... And also that you are hemorrhaging money way too fast for a new player, not sure why tbh. I suggest in the name of all your fits you add how much money they cost, for your benefit.

Yes, of course! But I hope you understand that much of it will have to wait until post-Fanfest. :)

Honestly, the single best thing you could do to create a better NPE is to fix the broken interfaces and make the game more intuitive from an operational concept description (OCD) and definition standpoint. Seriously, google that stuff, I'll wait. Next you need to keep in mind things like human machine interface design (again google it). Once you incorporate those two things into your process, you will find that you will produce a better product that will result in much less frustration for your player base.

Actually, PvE was confirmed for Dust when CCP advertised for an AI programmer for the Shanghai office six months ago. You people should look at ccpgames.com/jobs more often.
Thanks for interacting with this actually rather interesting thread CCP Saberwing. It does show the problems of the the NPE that I want to become more of a priority if I'm lucky enough to be elected.

Very good diary for the first few weeks. lol I was somewhere along those lines when I started back in beta... Couldn't get the hang of it until I let myself sit on passive for a while. When you come back with 3mil unallocated, it makes a difference.
Having recently made an alt for the purpose of seeing what the tutorials are like, I was extremely disappointed. They might as well not even exist. They don't tell you jack **** about how to play or how to actually make fittings. "Make this fitting valid"?! Could you be any more vague?
I'm glad CCP is looking at NPE, as is the case with many things here on Dust, but the lack of results is somewhat discouraging.

Seriously though, what do you expect? Youre going to say this was completely unpredictable? PC corps get free ISK for absolutely nothing, and then use that ISK to run proto fits in Public Matches.
How do you expect new players to compete against vets who have access to the top tier equipment and an unlimited ISK supply to fund it?
Equipment costs is supposed to be part of balance. But you let a bunch of players get free ISK to not worry about their equipment costs. So your whole idea of balance goes out the window.

There is a valid point to be made here about if 500k of SP for a new starter is enough for this game anymore.
That said, boosting it to say 3 million, is not going to solve the problem unless the NPE better explains what skills suit which roles.

Coincidentally, I got myself a new character one or two days ago. If I didn't know how to properly distribute my initial skill points, I would be completely gimped right now. It would be really nice if the game actually told new players which priorities they should have for the skill tree, how to unlock their first complete fit (which means full standard gear on a specialized suit - The basics are crap and you know it) and how to delete the AV starter fit and replace it with a milia heavy with militia forge gun. There should also be a warning for the small blaster turrets, as well as dropships, PLCs, Flaylocks and proximity mines. Those gimp a newbie even more than running a militia fit with no skillpoints in armor/shields. |

When I started playing this game back in June of last year I also died a lot. I played with 4-5 people I know from work. It was fun and we had a good time playing. Playing with other people definitely makes it more fun and enjoyable. We even made fun of each other when we died. I also only ran free suits and spent all my points in core upgrades. I would stay away from vehicles until you can afford them and you are able to spend some sp to make them more viable.
All story short, we all have to pay are dues and go thru growing pains....

Having been here since forever, here's my advice: (It's different than most) First: Get shield and armor upgrades to 3 each before anything else.
This gives you 15% more shield and armor base and is quick. Second: Get operation to 3 in whatever gun you like
Third: Get lvl 1 in whatever suit you want, I recommend an actual suit such as assault, logi, sentinel, commando as these are cheaper than their base counterparts.
Fourth: Get basic level of your tanking modules (shield and armor plates/extenders and reppers)
Fifth: Get shield and armour upgrades to 4 each
Get shield extender/armor plates to 3 for adv level modules
Lastly: Get electronics and engineering up as needed to allow you to fit basic/militia suits with basic weapons.
If you skill that way and run with a squad of a couple people you enjoy playing with the game will be much more enjoyable. This is also probably the most benefit you can get from early sp. Don't bother with level 5 of most any skill for quite some time, in your first couple months you'll be better served by getting things to lvl 3 as you'll get 60% of the bonus for only a small fraction of the cost. Run basic suits with basic stuff on them and focus on the passive skills like armor and shield upgrades, weapon operation etc. Once you have a basic suit with basic mods and adv hp mods for your tanking type, try to get basic level of more of the things you use like equipment or sidearms etc. You'll gain a lot in the way of playstyle choices with little investment and from there you can gradually bulk up where needed. If you really like your weapon you can further invest in passive benefits to it such as prof. ammo or reload. If you feel like you die when you just barely poke out of cover then prioritize hp mods and skills. If you want to be utility and move about the battlefield helping out, go for movement modules in dropsuit upgrades and get hacking mods/skill.
Balance sp investment vs. reward and remind yourself that the benefit of better weapons compared to their cost really isn't worth it until you have the passive skills and fitting to extend your alive time.
Lastly, rule of thumb, use a weapon one tier below your suit type. This helps with going isk positive immensely.

I agree. There should be tiers in the Academy. I'll try to put together a thread in the Features & Ideas forum when I have the time to better outline what I'm talking about.

Listen to this guy. He is spot on with how to invest SP.
A few things to add: uplinks can be a great source of WPs, so even throwing down 1 or 2 cheap ones could help a lot. You're paid out based on your rank at the end (the formula is complicated, and based partially on the total ISK value lost by the enemy team. Getting a handful of extra WPs every match from a basic and militia uplink can pay off a decedent amount over the long term.
This is a long-term game. You acquire SP everyday even when you're not playing, so never feel bad about taking a break for a month or three and coming back to spend that SP, especially if you're frustrated/burnt out.
Don't feel like you should use your best stuff very often. You should focus on building up an ISK reserve. Run cheap fits when you're learning. Your KD is a meaningless number, your wallet is the one that matters. Running cheap fits builds good habits about trying to stay alive, and choosing your engagements wisely. Some fights can't be won, even if you see the other guy first. Wait for him to be engaged with one of your teammates before jumping in to surprise/double-team him.
Use the squad finder. It is an invaluable tool for finding squads when your corpmates are offline. Don't run solo, always use teamwork.
Playing with vehicles is an expensive direction. They're powerful and fun, but expect to be broke. I have over 70m ISK banked up and I don't feel like I can really afford to run vehicles. I would discourage putting SP into infantry skills and vehicle skills simultaneously on the same character until you have a very solid infantry character made that you can run regularly and go ISK positive for the match. It may be better to make a dedicated tanker and/or pilot alt(s).
Make a throwaway alt, since you get 500,000 SP for each new character. For example, let's say you want to try out the plasma cannon (it's pretty bad and you'll probably hate it). Make a new character, put all skills into the plasma cannon. Run some matches with it to check it out. After you decide you like it (or more realistically, hate it), biomass the character and repeat for a different weapon or suit after the biomass countdown runs out. You can save a lot of wasted SP on your main character this way.
Best PvE idea ever!

When I started it was probably half way through closed beta, but there were still plenty of adv and proto suits running around everywhere. Since I knew I wanted to be a dropship pilot I started spending all mp sp into dropships and using the starter fits on the ground to earn money for the dropships...it was quite a hellish existence. I started as a medic and threw down nano hives, repped people up and stuck needles in them when they were down. But I died.....a lot. Most of the time I was praying that the heavy I was repping would just barley stay alive while he fought off the 3 reds coming to kill us. My milita assault rifle was meh, I could help people with real guns, and any time I was alone I would die almost instantly. I didn't care though, I was pursuing my dream, until the collision mechanics of dropships was changed to combat gods foot and a slight tap on a light post would kill you. So I died on the ground to earn isk to die in the air though I knew if I kept practicing, and working, and learning from my deaths I would become a better soldier and pilot. Well a year later and I have my complex fitted assault dropship which I am able to fly like an ace and with very good gunners that make short work of infantry and vehicles alike. My combat experience in a dropship gives me an edge in combat and I have learned from the 200+ dropships I've lost over my training.
Op, I was just like you once, now I'm in the top tier of assault dropship pilots. This game isn't easy, and it takes some getting use to. You need patience and you have to look at death in a positive light, every death teaches you something. Spend your sp on specializing into a role and a weapon, make sure you work on your core skills and pretty soon you will be a competent merc in new eden. Getting a mic and meeting people, making friends or joining a corp will really help your experience, most vets are around for the brothers they have made while surviving dust.
Good luck! o7 |

Aika Nakata wrote:Day one: First game was incredibly fun.

We came up with an idea while discussing this topic earlier.
the battles take place over various systems of various security status. so how about selecting which security space you want to fight in which determines what equipment can be used and how much reward you get?
1.0-0.5 MLT/STD gear. LAV only -10% isk payout
0.4-0.1 MLT/STD/ADV gear. 2 vehicles each side same payout as now
0.0 anything goes 4 vehicles per side. +20% isk payout
that way its lore firendly (DED controlled combat regulations prohibit use of experimental equipment in empire controlled space) and when we get new players in we can gradually build them up. those of us with high skills will still have an advantage over new players but limiting HAV spam and full stomps of higher tier suits would ease the pain up a bit. sure my covenant assault will have 20% more hp but a noob will at least kill me with thier militia/recruit rifle if they catch me off guard whereas in proto i can turn around. pick which testicle i want to take of and then shoot

Exactly.
Almost every time you guys do something "in secret", you screw it up. Rather than have you guys spend a lot of tweaking time, to have it completely useless when you release it.. how about telling us up front, so we can give you guys feedback, so you can release something that is actualy effective from day 1 of you releasing it??
also, you mentioned "small changes".
"small changes" will never, EVER, fix the new player experience. Only large, drastic changes, like introducing mandatory level tiering of battles, will have any meaningful effect.
Plus, rather than make assumptions about (well, if we did X, it could be nice, but there wont be enough player interest...

1.0-0.5 MLT/STD gear. LAV only -10% isk payout
0.4-0.1 MLT/STD/ADV gear. 2 vehicles each side same payout as now
0.0 anything goes 4 vehicles per side. +20% isk payout
that way its lore firendly (DED controlled combat regulations prohibit use of experimental equipment in empire controlled space) and when we get new players in we can gradually build them up. those of us with high skills will still have an advantage over new players but limiting HAV spam and full stomps of higher tier suits would ease the pain up a bit. sure my covenant assault will have 20% more hp but a noob will at least kill me with thier militia/recruit rifle if they catch me off guard whereas in proto i can turn around. pick which testicle i want to take of and then shoot There are several problems with this. The SP, experience, practice and knowledge of the maps, are much bigger differences than the gear. Vets wanting to pad their KD will still stomp new players in "highsec" matches with STD gear. The payout differential is minimal, and if you decrease it enough to disencentivise vets from playing these, you'll be crippling new players from building enough ISK to buy skills and try new things. If you "fracture" the limited playerbase into these gear-based tiers, and again by the 3 existing game modes, the matchmaker will have an even worse time getting balanced matches quickly. It would also decrease the liklihood that CCP could add additional modes in the future, because it would make the matchmaking problem exponentially worse with each new mode.
The better solution (as I stated earlier in the thread) is creating 1 new mode that is only available to players under some SP cap. New players can still join regular pub matches, FW, and even PC (not likely, but still technically possible), but they have a "kiddie pool" option to play against each other, learn the maps, develop tactics, earn enough SP to build a solid fit, etc.

Its the gear that seems to make the difference in my matches. Then again I come from playing the older classic rainbow six games. Like Athena sword, and rogue spear. So my gun game has to be up to snuff as well as positioning and situational awareness.
So it could just be experience on my end but most battles involving the same tier gear I come out on top. Win some and lose some but yeah. I think the idea has some merit. Just needs to be done correctly. |

That depends largely on the style of play. CORE Skills, yes. Suits, maybe not.
From Beta I've been a sniper. I don't get killed very often, I use terrain, cover, and true scout technicques to avoid getting counter-sniped, and when heavies try to charge my position I just shoot them down. It isn't too hard to stay alive. Now that I have extra SP saved up, I put some SP into vehicles and sidearms.
I do apologize OP, when I think about it this way MINA has a point, I was thinking from my perspective. However, I am aware that you can pilot, and in that case you don't really need a ton of eHP, or suit bonuses for that matter, since you will spend most of your time in a vehicle of some sort.
In this case, Weapons can broadly refer to your Vehicle Module of your choice--railgun, blaster, missile--and specing into those is useful because that decreases CPU/PG usage of vehicle weaponry, meaning that you can fit other useful modules.
So when we put MINA's perspective into view, this is how I see it:
Core > Weapons > Suits
or
Weapon > Core > Suits (Note here, I write "Weapon" because it is singular. First find what you enjoy doing and what you do best, and keep at it. That's the key to success-learning to play your role effectively, to the very best. Once you do that, you become a gem to your corp and to your wallet ))
It helps if you have BPO's too.

A better NPE is something we're taking very seriously, and while I can't share anything with you just at the moment just know that there is currently work being done on improving this. If you ever see me in game, feel free to send me a message or shoot me in the face. I have to say this. Through all the bullshit and everything else Ive experienced tonight and previous mentioned days, that last line somewhat made it worth it. Thank you for responding to this thread, but I have no idea what would truly redeem this game in my eyes currently. Ive tried everything now to have a good game including running free suits. They seem to be the only thing i can get even a single kill with in the last few days. Its ridiculous. This event that is coming up I have a bad feeling about as well. It will mean i can get more experience but at the same time, I feel that every single player will be out in force with their squads jsut to "farm" players like me. And that is really what they are doing currently. Im a little mob in the middle of a field that has no chance against any opposition that has been put in front of it lately...
Hey don't forget you also have allied Corps like Nova Corps Marines, Cosmic Void, Defenders of the Helghast Dream, Battle Survey Group, and Endless Hatred. We often have Alliance squads running that you can easily join by going into the Squad Finder. Alliance and Corporation Squads are always at the top of the Finder. If there isn't one there then go to our Dust side Alliance chat channel and LFS there. We are all there to help each other out.
I do agree, however that the New Players have it bad.. a simple Player vs Environment mode would help significantly on this

True. But it will at least be fair from an equipment standpoint. Then the newberries will be more able to appreciate, "wow. that guy really nailed me.. wonder if I can do the same?"

This is manifestly untrue even within your own company, sure there's some marketing-hoarding prior to fanfest style events but in general across the course of the year look at the difference between just EVE and Dust alone in terms of comms.
Go look at how some other companies like SOE itself and ArenaNet handle comms about upcoming changes if you need some pointers.

to be fair yeah having it broken down into these types just helps even the equipment playign field. sure vets know the maps but as i said. its to have vets run with noobs out of the academy. i've been runnign with 5 recruits recently. they all have around 1-1.5m sp. when we're against people in similar suits to ourselves we can still hold our own. real world experience at FPS gaming accounts for far more than 45m sp. yeah my exile AR will do more damage than his, my suit will have a few more HP but if someone is better at flanking than i am then they can take me, whereas if am sat in my stacked out proto gallente logi he can flank me, shoot me, i turn around giggiling that his militia rifle tickles and then blast him in the face with my duvolle and wait for my complex repper to heal me back up in the time the next one comes along.
i'm not saying vets will try and abuse it but at least in 0.5-1.0 it wont be constant proto and vehicle stomps. it will level the playign field some. look at game sliek BF4 and COD you can jump into them with guys who been playign months but all your guns are similar and you can stand a chance. proto doesnt make you a better player. actual experience does and having coupel of vets with a squad of noobs or even a squad of random noobs together they would stand more chance against a squad of nyains in STD gear than they would in STD vs nyains in proto gear

I don't start with nothing of that no even sp or isk bonus(maybe i get a bug who knows) and i just use for alts to get easy cash nothing more.

Under my proposal, you wouldn't have a squad of Nyains wearing anything in the academy because they have too many SP to be eligible, so that whole issue goes away completely. If your concern with using the SP cap instead of gear-based tiers is vets not being able to mentor new players, then all you would have to do is use a throwaway alt character. Biomass her when she hits the cap for academy matches. Don't use boosters, and turn off passive SP and you should get decent mileage out of each "mentor alt" before having to convert it to Soylent Green. You'll still have the ISK you earn, and you get to experience a variety of playstyles. I don't see much of a problem.
Also you never addressed the concern about fracturing the concurrent player pool and the resulting matchmaker issues that would result from it. If we had 3 tiers of gear, with 3 types of matches, that's splitting the playerbase into 9 pools for the matchmaker, further split that into regions, and you start to wait for a very long time to get your match, and when you do, it will always be the same people (much worse than it already is).
If you look at it objectively, using an SP capped mode for new players is much simpler, and achieves the same goals, while avoiding most of the problems. Yes, making/biomassing mentor alts will be annoying, but it's a much easier and more manageable downside than those that result from your proposal.
Also, the playing field shouldn't be even. DUST isn't about fair fights (it should have balanced fights though--there's a difference).
Best PvE idea ever!

Good luck.
FW doesn't pay out isk bra, he's pretty damn poor as it is. It's supposed to be the other way around that FW is an isk sync for the vets but not two ***** were given. At this point this game has come down to this:
CCP starting out:
Let's see what happens if we just throw new players in like this was a prison colony. Surely the internet and of course human history has taught us that humans are just inherently good sports and especially when it comes to leisurely activities they will exercise restraint with the newcomers.
CCP Now:
What happened to everyone? Why the hell does dust look like "The Road." New CEO, (Sorry I forgot his name at the moment,) EVERYONE GET IN HERE!

I remember hearing talk about specialization when this game was first being introduced. My question is, how can anyone specialize into a specific type of game play when radical changes are made almost every patch. I have changed my specialization 4 different times. Not to follow the FoTM, to put myself in a place where I felt was the more comfortable for my play style. The only reason I have had to change is because of the changes that were made. Where I was very happy with my choices, those choices were changed for me. When you take something that people have invested their time into and change it to the point it becomes less viable to their play style then you are making the choice for us. And, our choices were impeded upon.
This has happened more then a few times. How can a new player be expected to thrive if they spend a good amount of time finding what play style that fits them only to have everything about their choices changed without their consent, approval or proper testing to see if the changes made will effect the time established choices the player has made. Remember people pay money for boosters. Logicly if you think about it, they are paying for skill points to invest in those choices. So when you CCP make radical changes you change the product people paid money to purchase.
It is like me buying a plate of food and after waiting for the time it took to get prepared and already having paid for the meal up front via my time & money I am served a different meal then what I ordered. If you purchased a product and someone handed you something different or changed what that product was shortly after you purchased it then would you be happy about that purchase?
It doesn't bother me so much because why? Because I have become accustomed to the consistent change that the CCP Dust 514 Dev team has implemented over "release" of the game. New players who have less then 1 million SP feel these type of changes the worst.
Anyway, NPE is an absolute priority. That much isn't even debatable. A lot of people are crossing their fingers for this game to be strong and progressive. Attention spans are short in the FPS community. The longer it take to address the real issues the harder it will be to dig Dust 514 out of the whole it is currently in.

it's all about persistence and cheap suits. CCP won't let me change my name so I create alts all the time. I find that if you're willing to let your k/d ratio drop, than you can get tons of isk running militia stuff. Just stick it out to the end of the match, and as long as you keep pushing yourself, try to take objectives, and hack the crap out of things it doesn't matter if you die 20 times.
cause your militia suit is less than 4,000, and you're going to be making about 100,000 isk on average.
Also, skills really add up. not only that but you will be surprised how versatile a militia suit can be with all militia modules and equipment (except militia nano injectors, never run those unless you also have a rep gun), and only your gun at standard.
here's a cheap fit that will help: militia gallente light frame combat rifle or rail rifle
militia nano injector militia repair gun
as much armor stacking as you can get.
stay close to a group of players and watch the wp roll in.

Fanfest is coming, guys. And I get the distinct feeling it's gonna be a doozy.
We'll be learning about the next named Dust expansion, and more than likely the next Eve one too. Last year, us pod pilots heard the name of our summer expansion in early March (IIRC), and we've heard nothing but a few suggested changes thus far. The fact that CCP is waiting this long to reveal the Eve expansion - in particular, that they're waiting to do it at the same time as the Dust expansion - suggests to me that both games' reveals will contain big news about the Link, which I can't wait to see.
I put trust in the post by CPM Hans from a while ago (can't be bothered to find it) saying that CCP's relative silence about Dust of late does in fact mean large amounts of productivity are going on. We haven't heard a peep from Rouge since his introduction, we know nothing of any advances to vehicles, FW, PC, or anything else. As frustrated as I am at that (like many of you), like Saberwing said, why would they tell us anything big when their biggest event is just weeks away?
CCP wouldn't stay silent for this long without good reason, I know that. Devs and CPM alike who are in the know about things to come seem very excited about it, and I bet they feel a bit like this guy did up until this reveal. I might even go so far as to predict such major announcements as full racial vehicles of all kinds, PC 2.0, FW 3.0, PVE, PVE with an Eve connection, or even Tiericide.
And of course, that's to say nothing of Valkyrie, for which I expect to hear a release date. I'm also curious if CCP has changed their approach to the Oculus version in light of the recent Facebook acquisition (protip CCP, I will not be buying a Rift now).
Just wait, mercs. Wait three more weeks. We waited three months for 1.8, we can wait one more to hear the big plans. I still have hope, at least for those three more weeks.
To Saberwing I say keep up the good work. You community bros are basically scapegoats at times like this, but I and many others appreciate what you do to try and keep the mob orderly. o7

You don't release anything for fear of overhyping/underdelivering/rumour-mongering but the solution is worse than the problem.
Silence = incompetence.
Measured communication = middle ground = good.
To think that any company, gaming or otherwise, would release anything of substance prior to their biggest event and platform is a misguided conception. Silence =/ incompetence, that simply isn't true. I will openly admit that the NPE isn't where we want it to be and that we don't want to be driving new players away from the game. But, I will also quickly rise to defend the talents of those around me where I feel necessary. I see so much experience and "competence" in this studio, and I fully believe they are capable of delivering on this game's vision.
What you need to do is fight for the ability to actually give us, your community, the actual details of what you and the developers are working on. If you actually told us what you were working on we would be able to provide actual constructive feedback before you lock it in thus making you final product FAR BETTER.
You and everyone at CCP working on DUST should be begging the OP and others like him to describe his experiences in detail and tell you exactly what he feels needs to be done to correct the many wrongs you have created while you sit there and listen and then integrate his recommendations into the game. Then you tell him, and the rest of us, your exact plans before you release them so he can tell you if what you created is an accurate reflection of his recommendations. |

Preach it brother (or sister, who knows?).
Waiting/Soon (TM)...is what is going to end up costing this game.
I'm a naturally patient person. I'm the kind of guy who doesn't mind my GF taking those extra 30 minutes to do whatever. But Dust, oh Dust, has kept me waiting for many months now. I started this game excited, having watched the E3 2011 Trailer ( featuring integrated dropship/tank combat, thinking perhaps that we would, for once, have an intelligent Sci-Fi themed (and I liked EVE's lore, which made this ten times better) BF4 grade shooter.
Boy was I wrong.

I dont know how much manpower is behind Eve, Dust and Valkyrie, but the relative slow pace of visible progress indicates that it isnt too much. I wouldnt expect crackling fireworks on fanfest, since most of the announced features for 2013 didnt hit yet (its 2nd trimester of 2014). So even IF they announced significant changes in may, backed by real-time gamed presentations, I'd expect a delayed implementation of these features of about a half to full year.
Well whatever it may be they announce. If its not PvE and/or open world exploring ... I wont be psyched. But I made a vow to play dust at least till PvE strikes, so I'll play on.
The answer to your complaint is PvE. Always.

I hate to sound selfish, rude, and self-centered but Aqil Aegivan does make a point. I do recognize the work CCP had put into this game. But with the following problems: PC is dead, new players (once they each 2000 war points) will quit after 7-10 matches when playing with the veterans, horrible balancing mechanics, according to the credits in-game YOU ONLY HAVE 3-6 PEOPLE ON YOUR QUALITY ASSURANCE TEAM FOR DUST (yea I looked there in the credits and 2 of them were interns. btw you might want to redo the copyright since it was on 2013 and it is now 2014), and the unbalance mechanic for ISK payout when it comes to risk and rewards, are you sure we are on track with the vision of the game?

My biggest doubt is why CCP is taking more notice in people who only throw crap to their game. How many of them are game programmers? How many at least know that game Developers do what is best to the game not for everyone(is impossible satisfy everyones need)?.

I love how so many people tell you "get better get better!" The damn question is, HOW DO WE GET BETTER. -Dmitri Chuikov aka axINVICTUSxa

Villanor Aquarius wrote:Having been here since forever, here's my advice: (It's different than most) First:
Get shield and armor upgrades to 3 each before anything else.
This is excellent advice.

I agree. This is seriously something to consider.
This game mode reminds me of COD: Blackops "Barebones" gamemode.
Despite having better attachments, you are only allowed the basic gun, so you are forced to use iron sights. Your perks are downgraded to standard, not pro, perks, and you have limited customization.
CCP should take a step up--all suits are downgraded to basic/STD suit. Essentially, people would end up making fits with just STD modules and equipment.
I'm all for this.
This way, no one can say it is the equipment, it is only skill from then on--a lot more people trust me, will play this over the current game modes. Its more balanced. Maybe you can reduce the rewards from them, but at least it will be a MUCH more balanced game mode.

It takes a while to get used to the game especially with people who have much higher skills and better equipment. When you find the corp and the squad that you run well with then the game is a completely different experience. You begin to see tactics start to form and when squad cohesion gets stronger You can become a force to be reckoned with.
I have lost count on how many assault drop ships and tanks I lost because of lack of communication. The Key is Teamwork. You literally have to watch your squad mates back and they have to do the same.
I hope your experience gets better and if you stick it out perhaps I will see you in some Big fights. =)

This is a snipit from a much more developed idea. But this is how I envision the NPE. Follow the link in my signature to read the complete idea.
The Academy: Each of the four empires has consolidated their merc training program into a single location in the Concord owned staging system. The mercenary Academy is established for new mercenaries to help them learn the ropes of being an immortal soldier. PVP, PVE, and combined PVE+PVP play modes are available to new mercenaries. The four empires provide training suits, weapons and modules to new players (with no skill requirements) and the NPE guides new soldiers to experience the various roles, weapons, and fighting styles they will eventually adopt. Friendly fire is turned off, and the academy length is increased significantly (like 25,000 to 100,000 WPs in length). Mercenaries are not able to take the training gear with them upon graduation and a flat disbursement of Skill Points and ISK are awarded upon graduation from the academy. Soldiers can opt out of the Academy and move immediately to the Battlegrounds, however, they will receive a SIGNIFICANTLY reduced ISK rewards and will not be able to transfer ISK until they reach 25k WPs.
Players can choose to return to the Academy in order to serve as Alumni, but earn no ISK and SP rewards, do not have their stats updated (kills, WP etc.) and are limited to the training gear issued to them. These Alumni mercs will be placed in small squads and become the objective for new mercs to hunt and kill. These Alumni based game modes will be an additional option for new mercs to choose, and allow veteran players a way to help new players learn the game. Allumni who fulfill the role assigned to them during the match will earn concord LP which can be exchanged for LP from any faction.

This is just a general comment to the out and out douchebaggery on this thread. Who else thinks we need a "dislike" button on these threads so these guys who want to do nothing but gripe and complain realize that no one really agrees with them (and yes, I know the people who are doing that are the same that DGAF what others think)? How about instead of whining and complaining and going out of your way to start a fight and call names with the DEV who is actually willing to engage you, talk to you, and reason with you, you actually come up with some constructive comments/suggestions. Because all any of you who are doing that (again, those making constructive comments, even if slightly argumentative, this isn't for you) are just making yourselves look like disgruntled jackwads who have nothing better to do with their free time then come on here and whine. If you hate the game that much, quit. Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out, either.
On that note, to suggest they are going to release a whole bunch of new information less than a month from Fanfest is just ridiculous. That is not how any business works. What is the point in having Fanfest if they are not just going to put everything out there on the forums for everyone who is too impatient to wait 3 freaking weeks? Good lord people.
To CCP Saberwing, thank you for your thoughtful engagement and willingness to engage us, even those who are acting like toddlers and deserve no response. I for one truly appreciate it and want you to know your good deeds are not going unnoticed. |

I'm going to address what you said, putting a dislike button would just promote trolls to go through and knock peoples' likes down to 0, I know silly but plenty of trolls are like that even if they have to have ten accounts just to make others feel as crappy as they do all the time. (I suggested the dislike button on feedback before and that was actually the best reason why it should not happen) For people calling the devs names, this is because of high frustration, because of promises broken and for deadlines not meet or simply tossed out. Which is where the "soon tm" joke comes from when in relation to CCP. The other frustration is because CCP does not give out timely information, it also does not give out information all in a convenient source.
These are issues and problems that have been talked about in over 10 different ways and CCP has yet to truly respond to them except that, "We will consider it" people have done heavy number crunching for CCP drawn up youtube videos outling problems and showing exactly where they are such as how to properly balance the Rail Tank. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHy6CXWk3K4 The beginner manual that is currently available and stickied is literally work that people of the community did.
In conclusion I will not thank Saberwing or other devs till they act in a more appropiate manner when distributing information, this includes in game communications. Also, simple things like a tracker bar for events which would have been invaluable for keeping track of what rewards should have been and if guns were properly calculating need to be added to the game for accountability reasons. When core concerns for the game have been fully addressed, then I will thank the Dust devs by purchasing more product from them so that they can keep their jobs and I will thank them also on the forums in proper ways as well. |

The Dislike comment is semi in jest because of the specific reason you stated. It's not going to do anything constructive. As for the comments, as I said, I have no problem with people being semi-argumentative and asking questions. What I'm sick of is a DEV taking the time to come on and answer questions (even if people don't like the answer) and being basically **** on by people who want to prove a point by acting like assholes. Go ahead and complain. I have zero issue with that. However, there is a tactful way to do it and that is what I'm getting at.
Again, no issue at all with the suggestions and considerations. I think that is awesome and it does a great job in relaying relevant information. You are doing more than saying "You guys all suck and should rot in a hole because I don't like this game". You are giving constructive criticism and, even better, using actual DATA to back it up. That is awesome and I commend you for it.
As to the last paragraph, that is absolutely your prerogative. If you don't want to give props or thanks until "x" happens, go for it. Like I said, the only thing I'm suggesting is that if the DEVs are willing to take the time to engage us, as least have the decency to use some civility and respect. YOU are doing that with your comments. I appreciate what you are doing to help the game grow and hope you continue to do that. |

lol thats my thread saying fairly similar things to the opening post on this one...
i do believe the NPE need major work and that game balancing for public contracts needs looking at, however not for corp and faction wars...
a PvE element would be great! you could do raids on pirate bases or ambush other empire attack squads, scouting missions.. all sorts :) would make the game far more accessable to newwer players as they could get into that and be a bit more prepared for the main game which is the faction\corp wars...
i am not giving up yet though, yes it can be tv-smashingly frustrating and dead-pet level depressing when your being stomped all the time.. but i am still playing..(so far)
time to get stomped by proto-freaks.... again... and again... and again... and again... bored now

awesome thread!
I just came back and heard of this thread through word of mouth... yes, its that famous.
not only famous but so accurate!
first off I want to say, I'm sorry this experience has been so frustrating for you even though it isn't in any way my fault and I didn't have this experience because I started playing at the very beginning of open beta last year, you still have my sympathy. it's such a shame this game is the way it is. CCP has heard all of this before but perhaps not so eloquently and unfortunately they have shown us through their inaction that they don't care, and why should they? dust is making a profit, f2p has been good to them and guaranties an endless supply of fresh players, many of which will buy something hoping that will change their experience which is so similar to yours.... it wont.
I don't know if you are still playing. part of me hopes you are but part of me also hopes you have moved on and will never look back and all of me prays to (insert deity here) that you haven't bought anything.... DONT EVERY BUY ANYTHING FROM THESE SWINDLERS AND CHEATS!
I spent 600$ on dust before learning this... don't be a fool like me...
if you are still playing I have this suggestion for you.... have 2 accounts one you play and test stuff with spending your sp the other you just let cook with passive sp, and log in once a day to get your log in sp and and cap your weekly sp but don't spend any of it ( as terrible as it will be getting face rolled just play in starter fits with this char just to cap)...
except that the account your spending sp on is a test account and a way to acclimate yourself to dust. in a year from now you will be a pro, go to that account you have been saving sp on and spend it on exactly what you want and then you will have a better time.... and yes I am telling you that it takes a year of pain in this game to finally have a good time, the gameplay becomes addictive and satisfying, but you must pay your dues to experience this.
the real question is, is it worth it?....honestly no, but then I again I'm still here.....
this game makes me sad....

1) That may or may not have been me. I am crazy enough to fly into people red zones and try to get a few cheap kills, sorry about that, if it was me.
2) Sounds like you ran into Palatinate's squad. He's a cool dude, but when he runs his heavy purist squad, (which I love running with, as I'm also a purveyor of fattening foods) it is intensely fun. But only because those guys are hilarious.
Anyway, sorry to hear your time in Dust sucks, but understand almost everyone went through what you're going through. It is frustrating, not having the money or skill points to win a match, but it's beats the crap out of COD. |

Thanks for sharing your newbie experiences. SP makes a huge difference.
There are those out there that pretend they kill proto all day long in MLT suits. Maybe with maxed proficiency skills and core skills. Given the SP gap atm, new players are looking at a couple of months being ****** in comparison to a proto suit. You are worse off if you don't choose early and specialize.
I joined when there wasn't much of a SP divide, sometime after official release. So I had a lot of room to learn and grow. Nowadays though, I don't see how a new bro stands a chance with the amount of proto in pub matches.
And I'm certainly not going to ask you to stick it out, because it WILL BE A WHILE before anything changes. If you really are interested, just let the passive SP build up, and go play COD. At least there you STAND A CHANCE!

Just stick it out to the end of the match, and as long as you keep pushing yourself, try to take objectives, and hack the crap out of things it doesn't matter if you die 20 times.
cause your militia suit is less than 4,000, and you're going to be making about 100,000 isk on average. ...
here's a cheap fit that will help: militia gallente light frame combat rifle or rail rifle
Alternatively, just go full starter suit. If you like shooting people, invest SP into AR skill, and sharpshooter. Reap kills. If you die, you havent lost anything. It's all pure profit.
if you like being a medic, be an ambulance chaser in the starter medic fit and get revive points.
(actually, its a sad truth that for most racial starter fits, medic is the best allaround free suit anyway ,so just stick with that! It has an AR, and self-repair and the most amount of armor usually!)

Update: I dont know how to say this. Despite the support of players that are actually friendly and a hefty donation to my wallet where I would never need to worry about isk again, the game just isnt a game...Its not fun in the least to me. I dont have fun engaging any target and having no hope in killing them. Then the skills that I do invest into to make myself better, oh there not active due to some bug that happened in a patch. 30 seconds will fix it...If im being spawn killed I might have a shot in fighting back if the skills were actually active when I respawned to try and help push the line. This is only the surface of frustrations.
There is just such a huge gap between players that new players simply cannot get into the game to have fun. Not people that have a competitive mindset anyway. I have to go into a game thinking that im a pos cannon fodder soldier only good for less than a seconds worth of distraction regardless of the suit im playing. Ive tried light, medium, and heavy suits the only one of which was remotely survivable was the amarr light frame I put together. Its just ridiculas to try and do anything in this. Yeah, I get around 1k war points per match on a consistent basis but I feel like **** the entire time because skill makes ZERO difference when you throw gear at it.
In short, the donation will be being either returned to the player that sent it or the 703rd to help with what new recruits they might be able to convince to stay in this hellhole of a game. Eventually I might come back, but I doubt it. A game is meant to be fun when played, not something that because you were there first you just win and laugh at a person that tried their hardest to get a kill. Gear makes this game, not the player, not the tactics...

6 months would just about do it.
I really think one of the biggest changes CCP could make to improve NPE is to increase the starting sp amount to 2 mill or award the player at the end of a longer academy with 2 mill sp (because new players would just waste the 2 mill sp like a 16 year old getting an inheritance).
