Proto Stompers usually turn up at approximately 16:00 GMT+ 00
Use the squad finder to find squads if you can't find one in corp.
Don't run anything better than mlt gear UNTIL you have the shields and armour trees in dropsuit upgrades fleshed out
Don't just run into the middle of the map, think logically, what do I need to capture? what will they try to capture? Sometimes the fight is won by the one guy suppressing the flanks.
Keep to cover A LOT

The other part I got over this is how much of a bastards we can be in this game. Kinda cool, really just makes us jerks. Maybe I'm too soft. The reason I want him to stay is because he's a great dropship pilot, I also helped him out when he started to play. I have seen him play as a heavy once and he seemed to have a great time.

New Players should really only play Skirmish imo where they can pick and choose their engagements, Domination can sometimes be cruel, and Ambush is just asking to stomp the uninitiated.
Anywho while I sympathize with most of the post, familiarity with the game helps a lot with lowering deaths (and only playing on Skirmish) as I do just fine when I screw around with my basic ammar militia medic fit alt with zero invested SP, which means DUST 514 needs much better tutorials... And also that you are hemorrhaging money way too fast for a new player, not sure why tbh. I suggest in the name of all your fits you add how much money they cost, for your benefit.

Non-disclosure probably prevents them from giving out this information until they are told they can release it to the public.
On another note, why am I ten times as effective with the recruit rifle than using the assualt combat rifle x.x I upgrade to better stuff and become less effective. Also good morning to those around. Didnt think a recount thread would get this many responses o.o |

Honestly, the single best thing you could do to create a better NPE is to fix the broken interfaces and make the game more intuitive from an operational concept description (OCD) and definition standpoint. Seriously, google that stuff, I'll wait. Next you need to keep in mind things like human machine interface design (again google it). Once you incorporate those two things into your process, you will find that you will produce a better product that will result in much less frustration for your player base.

Thanks for interacting with this actually rather interesting thread CCP Saberwing. It does show the problems of the the NPE that I want to become more of a priority if I'm lucky enough to be elected.

Very good diary for the first few weeks. lol I was somewhere along those lines when I started back in beta... Couldn't get the hang of it until I let myself sit on passive for a while. When you come back with 3mil unallocated, it makes a difference.
Having recently made an alt for the purpose of seeing what the tutorials are like, I was extremely disappointed. They might as well not even exist. They don't tell you jack **** about how to play or how to actually make fittings. "Make this fitting valid"?! Could you be any more vague?
I'm glad CCP is looking at NPE, as is the case with many things here on Dust, but the lack of results is somewhat discouraging.

Seriously though, what do you expect? Youre going to say this was completely unpredictable? PC corps get free ISK for absolutely nothing, and then use that ISK to run proto fits in Public Matches.
How do you expect new players to compete against vets who have access to the top tier equipment and an unlimited ISK supply to fund it?
Equipment costs is supposed to be part of balance. But you let a bunch of players get free ISK to not worry about their equipment costs. So your whole idea of balance goes out the window.

There is a valid point to be made here about if 500k of SP for a new starter is enough for this game anymore.
That said, boosting it to say 3 million, is not going to solve the problem unless the NPE better explains what skills suit which roles.

You weren't here last year Saberwing but I can tell you this. When PC was explained to us during the round tables at last Fanfest, we basically predicted that this would happen. And we were spot on.
Make that your first lesson for your first Fanfest as a Dev. The players are your best source for figuring out what might go wrong with a new mechanic.

I'm not exaggerating. That, quite literally, is all Dust 514 got, in my opinion. Stay if you like it, walk away if you don't. I don't believe CCP has the resources to change it within the next two years.

Coincidentally, I got myself a new character one or two days ago. If I didn't know how to properly distribute my initial skill points, I would be completely gimped right now. It would be really nice if the game actually told new players which priorities they should have for the skill tree, how to unlock their first complete fit (which means full standard gear on a specialized suit - The basics are crap and you know it) and how to delete the AV starter fit and replace it with a milia heavy with militia forge gun. There should also be a warning for the small blaster turrets, as well as dropships, PLCs, Flaylocks and proximity mines. Those gimp a newbie even more than running a militia fit with no skillpoints in armor/shields. |

When I started playing this game back in June of last year I also died a lot. I played with 4-5 people I know from work. It was fun and we had a good time playing. Playing with other people definitely makes it more fun and enjoyable. We even made fun of each other when we died. I also only ran free suits and spent all my points in core upgrades. I would stay away from vehicles until you can afford them and you are able to spend some sp to make them more viable.
All story short, we all have to pay are dues and go thru growing pains....
Welcome to the game. |

Having been here since forever, here's my advice: (It's different than most) First: Get shield and armor upgrades to 3 each before anything else.
This gives you 15% more shield and armor base and is quick. Second: Get operation to 3 in whatever gun you like
Third: Get lvl 1 in whatever suit you want, I recommend an actual suit such as assault, logi, sentinel, commando as these are cheaper than their base counterparts.
Fourth: Get basic level of your tanking modules (shield and armor plates/extenders and reppers)
Fifth: Get shield and armour upgrades to 4 each
Get shield extender/armor plates to 3 for adv level modules
Lastly: Get electronics and engineering up as needed to allow you to fit basic/militia suits with basic weapons.
If you skill that way and run with a squad of a couple people you enjoy playing with the game will be much more enjoyable. This is also probably the most benefit you can get from early sp. Don't bother with level 5 of most any skill for quite some time, in your first couple months you'll be better served by getting things to lvl 3 as you'll get 60% of the bonus for only a small fraction of the cost. Run basic suits with basic stuff on them and focus on the passive skills like armor and shield upgrades, weapon operation etc. Once you have a basic suit with basic mods and adv hp mods for your tanking type, try to get basic level of more of the things you use like equipment or sidearms etc. You'll gain a lot in the way of playstyle choices with little investment and from there you can gradually bulk up where needed. If you really like your weapon you can further invest in passive benefits to it such as prof. ammo or reload. If you feel like you die when you just barely poke out of cover then prioritize hp mods and skills. If you want to be utility and move about the battlefield helping out, go for movement modules in dropsuit upgrades and get hacking mods/skill.
Balance sp investment vs. reward and remind yourself that the benefit of better weapons compared to their cost really isn't worth it until you have the passive skills and fitting to extend your alive time.
Lastly, rule of thumb, use a weapon one tier below your suit type. This helps with going isk positive immensely.

Vell0cet wrote:Maken Tosch wrote:This. This is why the Academy needs to be overhauled. And by "overhauled" I mean actually making it feel like an academy. Make it feel like a dedicated boot camp that allows players a chance to experiment with various fits and play styles along with a dedicated test range to test out various weapons and vehicles. That's the overhaul I'm talking about here.
Then, after acquiring approximately 1-2 million SP, the new player graduates and gets a chance to go into the shark-infested waters. Otherwise, you just get what the OP just suffered. I agree, but I think the 2nd tier academy should be optional with a cap more like 3-5 mill sp. The cap should be high enough that you can field a decent fit when you graduate, but low enough so those close to hitting it aren't stomping the newest players in the pool. having a higher cap also creates a larger pool of players so the matchmaker can field full teams and keep the wait times reasonable. The first tier academy should be very short so people have a bubble to play against other players learning the controls, and figure out the very basics of the game for the first few matches. Ideally this would be replaced by a real gameplay tutorial with a story and some scripted action to set the stage for the game and introduce the fundamental gameplay concepts.
I agree. There should be tiers in the Academy. I'll try to put together a thread in the Features & Ideas forum when I have the time to better outline what I'm talking about.

Listen to this guy. He is spot on with how to invest SP.
A few things to add: uplinks can be a great source of WPs, so even throwing down 1 or 2 cheap ones could help a lot. You're paid out based on your rank at the end (the formula is complicated, and based partially on the total ISK value lost by the enemy team. Getting a handful of extra WPs every match from a basic and militia uplink can pay off a decedent amount over the long term.
This is a long-term game. You acquire SP everyday even when you're not playing, so never feel bad about taking a break for a month or three and coming back to spend that SP, especially if you're frustrated/burnt out.
Don't feel like you should use your best stuff very often. You should focus on building up an ISK reserve. Run cheap fits when you're learning. Your KD is a meaningless number, your wallet is the one that matters. Running cheap fits builds good habits about trying to stay alive, and choosing your engagements wisely. Some fights can't be won, even if you see the other guy first. Wait for him to be engaged with one of your teammates before jumping in to surprise/double-team him.
Use the squad finder. It is an invaluable tool for finding squads when your corpmates are offline. Don't run solo, always use teamwork.
Playing with vehicles is an expensive direction. They're powerful and fun, but expect to be broke. I have over 70m ISK banked up and I don't feel like I can really afford to run vehicles. I would discourage putting SP into infantry skills and vehicle skills simultaneously on the same character until you have a very solid infantry character made that you can run regularly and go ISK positive for the match. It may be better to make a dedicated tanker and/or pilot alt(s).
Make a throwaway alt, since you get 500,000 SP for each new character. For example, let's say you want to try out the plasma cannon (it's pretty bad and you'll probably hate it). Make a new character, put all skills into the plasma cannon. Run some matches with it to check it out. After you decide you like it (or more realistically, hate it), biomass the character and repeat for a different weapon or suit after the biomass countdown runs out. You can save a lot of wasted SP on your main character this way.
Best PvE idea ever!

When I started it was probably half way through closed beta, but there were still plenty of adv and proto suits running around everywhere. Since I knew I wanted to be a dropship pilot I started spending all mp sp into dropships and using the starter fits on the ground to earn money for the dropships...it was quite a hellish existence. I started as a medic and threw down nano hives, repped people up and stuck needles in them when they were down. But I died.....a lot. Most of the time I was praying that the heavy I was repping would just barley stay alive while he fought off the 3 reds coming to kill us. My milita assault rifle was meh, I could help people with real guns, and any time I was alone I would die almost instantly. I didn't care though, I was pursuing my dream, until the collision mechanics of dropships was changed to combat gods foot and a slight tap on a light post would kill you. So I died on the ground to earn isk to die in the air though I knew if I kept practicing, and working, and learning from my deaths I would become a better soldier and pilot. Well a year later and I have my complex fitted assault dropship which I am able to fly like an ace and with very good gunners that make short work of infantry and vehicles alike. My combat experience in a dropship gives me an edge in combat and I have learned from the 200+ dropships I've lost over my training.
Op, I was just like you once, now I'm in the top tier of assault dropship pilots. This game isn't easy, and it takes some getting use to. You need patience and you have to look at death in a positive light, every death teaches you something. Spend your sp on specializing into a role and a weapon, make sure you work on your core skills and pretty soon you will be a competent merc in new eden. Getting a mic and meeting people, making friends or joining a corp will really help your experience, most vets are around for the brothers they have made while surviving dust.
Good luck! o7 |

Aika Nakata wrote:Day one: First game was incredibly fun. Player academy put me up against people in the same gear i was wearing and my skill showed. First person shooters give people with some relative skill a good time. 44/9 out the door of the academy and to the bears. Played another six games and went to ask questions on the forums. Was dirrected to find a corp and also to "get gud".
Day two: Joined a corp. Played a few games with them and had a relatively better time in general. Corp logged off after a few matches that we were able to play and I was left solo. So after a few games of getting the **** kicked out of me I said **** it and logged off. I dont need to beat my head into a wall.
Day three: Learned to fly a dropship! I took to these things rather well and have been complimented several times on the way I fly them. However I still lost quite a few ships to av rail tanks sitting back nowhere to be seen. Lost most of my isk this way despite having fun flying around the maps. No points to speak of from flying these ships however as nobody will stay in the guns and I dont have access to anything more advanced than gorgons and vipers.
Day four: met nyan san...all ******* day...Quit out after an hour of playing feeling like I had been barred from the game.
Day five: specced into advanced combat rifles. Still forced to play with lower tier rifles due to cost per fit and lack of steady income in game due to player lockout from even pub matches.
Day six: Realised most of my sp investment was somewhat pointless. Rather depressed about the game in general
Day seven: Learned that I dont like tanks. Or heavies...or anything with over 600 armor in general. Finally hit weekly sp cap.
Start of week two: Swapped my tank modules out for recharge things. Same time until death but could actually pop in and out of cover to at least defend an objective. Cant find squad to play with.
week two day two: find out that the rdv driver is an *******. He drops my dropships three times in a match from at least 50 meters up, killing them each time on impact...then when i get one in the air, comes in carrying another vehicle for someone else and swats me out of the sky. I take his plate number and intend on breaking his ship at some point. Stomped by better gear all day long. Managed to get a few kills here and there. K/d has dropped below levels that are acceptable to me.
Week two day three: log on and notice I dont have enough isk to restock my ten suits i keep in stock. Remember the night before and try and run free kits to get some isk. First three matches are against queue synced corps. Constantly stomped in the face over and over. Log off highly frustrated.
Week two day four: Finally get in a squad with a few players. Have three wonderful games where I was able to support my team with my commando. Got to rep some people. Made enough isk to finish out refits. Squad dispersed after a few matches. Proceeded to get my ass kicked and sent hatemail from teammates telling me to get better. Funny, I was top of the endgame report on that team...400 points total. Yay...
Week two day five: Decided to try tanks for a little while. Rdv driver dropped my tank on the roof of some building...got there after a friendly took it and drove off. Proceeded to run into combat without vehicle and just let the ****** have the vehicle. See my vehicle explode...die a little inside.
Week two day six: Get spawnkilled in the deployment less than 20 seconds into the match by a dropship running xt1 missiles. Wonder how he got there that quickly. This set the tone for the day. Cant find a squad most of the day. Ended up quitting very early, the rest of my experience playing out that this game just doesnt want me in it.
Final day of two weeks: Spec into level 4 combat rifles and gain access to assault combat rifle. Load up a fit with the rifle and see what the thing is all about. First game I got one kill then proceeded to die 5 times in a row without my weapon fireing for some reason despite seeing the animation. Lost money. Tried again and got a few more kills, no support and still lost money. Final match, every player on my team was afking behind our deployment zone running in circles inside the ship with me and a single squad mate out fighting 3 tanks and a boatload of prototype mercs. Most were heavies. No chance to push past the line whatso ever.
The game has barred me pretty much entirely from playing and doesnt seem to get any better. To those that got here early enough to not have to deal with the **** im seeing and feeling every match that i play, your lucky. To those that are feeling the same that i am, go throw things at ccp buildings. (dont actually do that.)
To everyone else, good game...or not...this game doesnt seem to be anyway.
Welcome to DUST 514. Please enjoy your stay.

We came up with an idea while discussing this topic earlier.
the battles take place over various systems of various security status. so how about selecting which security space you want to fight in which determines what equipment can be used and how much reward you get?
1.0-0.5 MLT/STD gear. LAV only -10% isk payout
0.4-0.1 MLT/STD/ADV gear. 2 vehicles each side same payout as now
0.0 anything goes 4 vehicles per side. +20% isk payout
that way its lore firendly (DED controlled combat regulations prohibit use of experimental equipment in empire controlled space) and when we get new players in we can gradually build them up. those of us with high skills will still have an advantage over new players but limiting HAV spam and full stomps of higher tier suits would ease the pain up a bit. sure my covenant assault will have 20% more hp but a noob will at least kill me with thier militia/recruit rifle if they catch me off guard whereas in proto i can turn around. pick which testicle i want to take of and then shoot
Rolling with the punches

Joined oceania servers and ran into the same thing...
it depends.
If you join the battle, check the player list, and see that there is a corp on.. especially Southern Legion... then just L1->leave battle, and try a new one.

... Why not map out actual progress on a roadmap for commentary instead of hiding in the bunker and unleashing it all of a sudden with zero consultation to find your changes, like so many others, are flawed or just generally don't actually address the problem. Secret = stupid.
Exactly.
Almost every time you guys do something "in secret", you screw it up. Rather than have you guys spend a lot of tweaking time, to have it completely useless when you release it.. how about telling us up front, so we can give you guys feedback, so you can release something that is actualy effective from day 1 of you releasing it??
also, you mentioned "small changes".
"small changes" will never, EVER, fix the new player experience. Only large, drastic changes, like introducing mandatory level tiering of battles, will have any meaningful effect.
Plus, rather than make assumptions about (well, if we did X, it could be nice, but there wont be enough player interest...
ASK US!
You have some nice custom focus software here. So add a poll feature. Then you can ask future questions, and make related decisions on HARD DATA, rather than vague guesswork about user preferences.
