Not to "defend" AA, but wasn't there a Dev post about latency inherent in their server-side hit-detection, etc? It was something to the effect of needing a certain degree of AA server-side to compensate for the issues of players' client not always...

It's difficult to fully extricate hit-detection from AA, but there a was combination of engine/rendering related lag-type issues as well in the early uprising days.
