When I watched Lucky Star, the translator's would use TL notes to describe what we as English language users would miss. Sometimes they would go as far as leaving the original words (like onomonopeia type words such as DOKAN or FUWA FUWA). And then in the TL notes (sometimes require the pausing of the video) it would fully explain the joke. In doing so it got me to appreciate and understand Japanese humor. I don't know if this answers your qestion entirely, but I like the shows that don't try and explain to you through the translation WHY one character is saying what they are saying. At the same time, shows like Squid Girl can't easily make the same sort of jokes through a translation as they can by using an english dub. I hate shows that act like you are ******** and think you can't listen between the lines so to speak or remember what they just said 5 minutes ago. No need to repeat the same dialog or narrate all your actions. (Gate - Jietai Kare No Chi Nite, Kaku Tatakeri) Do you like military, fantasy, magic, demigods, tanks, politics, dragons, elves, demigods, helicopters, curbstomp battles, and FREEDOM? This manga is for you. (Think "Romans" meet "Dungeons and Dragons" meet "real world military".) Currently 39 chapters. Nisekoi Yep I read it. The biggest reason I started was because of the oneshot. Oneshot Raku and current Raku are not the same. I prefer Oneshot Raku. Tsugumi is best girl (readies for negative reactions), though I must give big props to Haru. Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA ILLYA Off shoot of Fate/Stay series. Magical girl tone. Some small yuri tones. But when there's action it doesn't disappoint. And the story? At first it seems generic with only minor hints of politics. But now that I found there was a second and third "season" if you will (2wei, Drei)... Let's just say, the Emiya Theme video counts on Youtube have skyrocketed... Fate/Stay fans will enjoy the hell out of this series. They will also fangasm when they get to current chapters. Not enough of an offshoot? We need to go deeper. Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha Vivid An offshoot of an anime series (3 seasons of them, an OAV, and 2 movies) which was spawned by an offshoot of Triangle Heart. The MC Nanoha has a reputation of "befriending" her enemies. And by "befriending" we mean shooting magical energy to defeat them with an energy equivalent that makes the Big Bang Kamehameha, the Rasengan, and the Getsuga Tenshou look weak combined. (But anyways...) MC Vivio is someone who came into the series during Nanoha Strikers. In this manga (written by a different mangaka), they do a good job of staying in line with the Nanoha universe. The biggest thing that I enjoyed so far was the fighting tournament. However, the story is starting to progress and memories and ancestries are coming to the surface. It's a little bit of cute girls doing cute things, mixed with cute girls doing badass things (tournament), yuri tones (again), and clothing damage (again, tournament). The series was a bit slow to start but it feels like it's picking up momentum. Some of the questions we have about the characters, we are finally starting to find some of these answers. ~~Magical War Chronicle Lyrical Nanoha Force~~ While I was a bit hyped up for this one, I can't recommend it now. Either interest in it has halted or the series has been cancelled. In any case, it hasn't been updated for some time. Vivid was set 2 years after Nanoha Strikers, and Force was set 4 years after. Written by another mangaka (not from original and not the same one as Vivid), this series focuses not only on Nanoha, but a boy name Touma Avenir. Lots of Deux Ex Machinas, lots of super heavy magical weaponry (which had me excited for a time), and lots of ridiculous (read: dumb) combat . (Honestly, the combat in Vivid was much better. Monty came into the underground spotlight when he made a Samus vs Halo Spartan video, and then further by creating the Dead Fantasy series which showcases characters from the Dead or Alive series versus characters from the Final Fantasy series (and then a special cameo as well). Some are new, the entire main 4 being fresh faces to Rooster Teeth, but Jen (aka voice for Cortana) does the narration and Michael from Achievement Hunters and Rage Quit is the voice for a character that appears later on in Volume 1, Kerry being another voice in the beginning of Volume 2. Red vs Blue fans will probably instantly recognize the voice of the long haired redhead in a ponytail and I believe there are others from RvB fame but I myself am not too familiar with all of them. (GDI, I wrote more than I expected) I could go on but I will say that I was in the same boat Ghost: I cringed a little when I heard their voices and their interactions. However, they are amateur voice actors; I believe this is their first start so there's room for improvement. Finally I'll say if anything, watch the Red, White, Black, and Yellow trailers, as well as episode 8 and 16 to jump straight to the action and watch Monty's handiwork in action. EDIT: There they are! It was worth it for me when I had it. It's no different than a Netflix sub. With the exception Crunchyroll can be watched for free. It removes the ads too which is nice. I see something more with this show that Trigger is doing a spectacular job with. Take for instance our little love comedy that immediately turns into a furiously serious feels trip with a little expository into the MC's mind about coming up with nicknames for powers. It's not something that are just random phrases, but rather things that paint a picture with hidden meanings and intentions waiting to be shown. Further in the show, you start learning about our characters, many of which point to possible dark plot elements. I initially added it to my queue because it's Studio Trigger, action, and hilarious comedy. Finally, Funimation and Toonami were on top of this so hard, by the time the 1st season was ending on Crunchyroll and in Japan, they were already starting to air the dubbed version in the States already. I'm also not arguing whether or not the show dominated the charts in Japan and was popular enough over here in the west to prompt Toonami to pick it up (by the way, it started airing in the states 8 months after the final episode aired in Japan). I'll even grant you that it brings a seriously interesting world to the table, 3D maneuver gear is a way to make everyone a practical Spiderman in terms of acrobatics. It's really neat. It's world is really interesting! If it's story telling or overall execution were half as good as its world building then I wouldn't be complaining. Having a show be popular doesn't say anything about that show's inherent quality, and this IS what I'm arguing. That other shows came out in 2013 that were simply better told or better executed stories. For all that Attack on Titan brings to the table with its genuinely interesting concept it aint perfect. The "strong female lead" can't go two seconds without obsessing over the main character. Erin Erin Erin Erin over and over and over. She's completely reliant on him on like a fundamental psychological level which just doesn't strike me as something that'd be inherent to a "strong female lead." The pacing problems come to shine in the Trost arc in which our main character spends two episodes looking at a rock and then two more episodes looking down the barrel of a cannon. Zzz. Shouldn't be a surprise to anyone familiar with the Japanese release of the show though, it was clear that they were just barely getting the episodes out in time for each week's deadline and cheap, time saving measures were employed to help with this. It had serious problems on the production side. Having well animated OPs, or attractive main characters, or a Toonami release, or parody videos released online doesn't mean the show's **** smells good. I had fun with it and enjoyed it ... I just couldn't rightfully call it the best show that came out in 2013. Ah. Looks like I need to make some edits to some errors. Going off of my foggy memory gets me in trouble a lot and I was on a roll. (And don't worry, it won't be stealth edits. ) I'll come back and make a proper response post (too tired now), but you make some excellent points that I agree with you on. More later! Many of these scenes are amazing as they are long, some in slow motion, others in normal speed but using more frames to convey fluid motion. It's impressive and I'm glad someone was able to sit down and compile all of this for us to see. Also from my understanding, "sakuga" is normally just 1 animator doing the scene, rather than multiple scenes made by multiple animators and then pieced together to form a "scene". While time-consuming and hard pressing on said animator, the results is an impressive display of fluidity and animation. Since we are on the topic of AMVs as well, I've have come across many but recently a new editor has impressed me to a level that no other editor has done. Bebop and Onizuka set the pace and the mood from the get-go whereas Kenshin surpised many as it evolved over time, not in a degrading way like most Shonen anime falls into, but a flourishing one to create one of the most surprising and impactful animes of all time. It's even more ironic, and yet fitting too, if you were to use an analogy to blacksmithing: Many Shonen animes attempt to forge the best swords; who knew that one of the greatest would come from a reverse-bladed swordsman? You forgot to mention he enjoys Romance/Slice of Life, which this show does very well. Bakemonotagari is just one of those shows like Cowboy Bebop that'll probably go down as a timeless classic. But there's one other point to be made here: Anything made by Shaft is gold. Bakemontagari Niskoi Zetsuba Sensei This show is NUTS... in a good way lol and some weird show about a kid who can time travel with some ghost, forgot the name but it's another shaft show that deserves praise. And then there's Ayakawa Under the Bridge I don't think this company has ever done a show that's rated anything but good. Ah! Yes! I did forget to mention the relationships the MC has with each of the characters. These are some of the most well-developed female characters I know (for once, I mean that in a plot sense, since some of them are underdeveloped? HUEHUEHUE). They go beyond the cardboard cutout stereotypes you generally see in many romance/harem genres. You get the feeling they are no different than real girls: they are cheerful on the outside, but they hold animosities on the inside. They develop friendships with each other, but still hold some jealousy. Again, deep character development. I will disagree with the "timeless classic" as I would amend that to say "timeless clut classic". The Monogatari series is not for everyone: it goes into a degree of difficulty in understanding Eastern culture, poetry, philosophy, wordplay, etc., that can easily leave a Westerner in the dust. I can't remember sales, but I don't think it was one of the top sellers, even though it did sell well. This is for the expert anime watcher, one who wants to go further into the history of Eastern culture. "Anything made by Shaft is gold": Well that's a bold statement! I will admit, Shaft picks up some interesting works and does some of the most unique animation work to date. I remember Madoka getting heavily criticized due to some of the things that Shaft had decided to do; many of whom claimed it to be "laziness" or "lackluster". But Shaft has a reasoning behind everything it does and the more you watch the works they do, the more apparent it becomes. However, I did not enjoy Ayakawa Under the Bridge one bit. It wasn't because it was bad, it wasn't poorly animated, it just wasn't my thing. Like I mentioned before, to each their own. I do wish I liked it though: I wanted to drop it after the first episode and trudged my way through 2 more, but I just couldn't get into it. As for Zetsuba Sensei: Shaft did that? But Roruni Kenshin was destroyed by that very thing - though the exact details elude me so I may need to go re-watch it. But I remember being very unsatisfied with the show 40 episodes in, lol. Hm, I can't seem to remember the ending, good news for me, that means when I re-watch i'll get to enjoy it all over again <3 Have you seen Mayou? I think if we were to make a corp called "Spice and Wolf Season 3" you and I would be the only ones occupying it. The ending to Kenshin that I'm talking about was the OAV called "Reflection". Meaning while they talk very fast, they engage directly with each other, creating some really great skits that both entertain and progress the story or characters growth. And where there's so much good going on in the plot, the setting even gets it's own episode dedication to help flesh out the world, and it ends up being very well thought out and interesting. Even the monsters get a dedicated episode to explain them, if this show had a Like button I'd be smashing it. and even with all the greatness in the plot and setting, still better yet is the animation. I could caps lock a lot of descriptive words, and it would be well deserving. But I think you all know what I mean, episode 1 food fight was just orgasmic, and they do that kind of fight scene once every 2-3 episodes. People jumping higher then buildings then casting magic using "dust" Great concept for the show to use combining some of the best Kung-Fu with high movement explosives everywhere action. And that's still not even my favorite part of the show, i love these characters. Weiss is my favorite by miles, a poster child Tsundere, and she's western made, it's just exciting to see. The rest of the cast too, just charm the socks off you, then blow them off with there intense stunts and willingness to show very real sides to make them so much more then 1 sided characters. Even the sub characters get amazing plots, my favorite sub character is the red head amazon girl, she's not only charming and easily the strongest, but has the purest heart of them all. I could go on and on about all the different elements I enjoyed, but I'll stop, and say, damn, should of watched this earlier. One of us, one of us... But seriously, I'm glad you are enjoying it. I loved the premise of this series and where it came from and originated. I have many things I want to tell you about it as well as some other things that were connected to it. On a sad note though, the creator of this series passed away a while back due to an unforeseen allergic reaction during a routine surgery. May he rest in peace. I was under the belief that it was just Kill La Kill all over again. (Sidenote: I loved Kill La Kill, but I can go into more detail about the pros and cons of that later.) I believed it's animation would be ok to great. Story wasn't going to go anywhere though. Too much hype, better stay away. And then there was rage as well over it, specifically the fact that the manga elements of it were highly detailed and people were essentially screaming "YOU BETTER NOT F*CK THIS UP!!!". Another mark for me in which I would stay away, seeing that most of the time the anime doesn't live up to the manga. Figured I would stay away from the ragestorm that would follow. Browsing on the internet, I came across it again through ANN. Figured I'd give it a look to see what they said for it since they are some of the most critical anime critics I've ever come across. Clicked the link. 4's and 5's across the board. Somewhere around the range of "it delivered" and "stayed true to the manga" as well as them saying it had a great story premise even though your initial thought is that it wouldn't be able to go anywhere with that. (Hey, they read my mind.) Wow. I can't even write a good enough review on it. Furthermore, after watching One Man Punch, I felt like a kid again watching Saturday morning cartoons. And then beyond that there came the comments something around "it lived up to the manga" and "it did better than the manga". And finally, I found out that Madhouse essentially hired all of the "Gods of Anime" to make this. If you haven't tried watching One Man Punch, just go and watch it. I have yet to see season three I realize... and that needs fixing. There's 2 loli's, both great. One's just an awesome character, the other is funny as hell. But the show is almost ruined by that orange hair girl, it just started grinding on me how she can't seem to be able unable to punch men, even after it becomes apparent how badly it's effecting her life and work. Well then you'll be glad with Season 3. Mind you i've only watched 2 episodes of it, but if you've seen season 1 and 2, you'll definitely see how much better she's getting. Why do I remember none of this? Yay for a reason to re-watch! I'm still iffy on choosing there best fighter with a failure rate chance. It may seem reasonable to you guys, but to me, it's like taking two different quality bulbs and deciding which to use on an outlet that may explode it. Both will light the room up, one will just do it better, so which do you take the chance with? If they tried it out, experimented putting it into another girl, it would of made more sense to me. They have the ability to do this whenever they want, why do they not test it on a loyal subject, rather then fire by trial with there best? The reasons they gave were going to be issues regardless if they put her at risk or not, so why risk it? And why would they expect panic from people who are used to being walled into cities for protection from monsters? How do they get food or supplies from within the city? We've seen it's landscape - there's no way it's self-sufficient. How is a world with so many threats so unprepared to handle them? And the world is not united, it's divided by four countries, who don't necessarily like each other. I think? This is the point in the story where I start to question the sanity of everyone living in it. And my skeptical nature tends to keep hitting me on the side of the head until I reason it out. If people are capable of doing Final Fantasy Advent Children moves with training, why aren't there more people trying? Does it make sense to anyone else that a modern day city operates functionally with Saurouns (Lord of the Ring, I suck at spelling names lol) forces constantly surrounding it, growing, adapting, and becoming more powerful? That bugs me. The choices bug me. It's like no one believes they're in a world that wants them dead. How long have they been in those cities? I think that may have been answered in some of the Remnant history videos during Season 2? People who have suspicions of what Emerald could do get them reinforced. (I only noticed it this episode.) Emerald can possibly do illusions or mess with people's heads. Finally, episode 6: Emerald isn't in her seat. We see a great display of a fight and Mercury's control of his abilities - a fight where Mercury already knows what Yang's semblance is and controls an attack to put her into that state. A control so great, Yang is left at 16 life left with a small sliver to leave her still in the match. In other words, he wanted her to do exactly that. On top of it, he wanted to be a loss. What better way than to make her "defend" herself from an unexpected attack only to make it look like she "attacked" the loser? All the moreso, he probably lowered his Aura to let her do just that. And in comes Emerald, right at his side, as if she was standing just outside of the ring... Finally, they mess with Yang's head. Notice the cut to the Grimm. Sure they could have gone after Pyrrha right then and there, but Cinder and her team would be outmatched. Wouldn't it be better to 1) pick apart team RWBY, close friends to team JNPR, while simultaneously causing enough negative emotion from say a whole stadium to draw our Grimm friends from the jump cut closer to the tournament? This means they are able to accomplish the start of the breakdown of friendship bonds, throwing them into present chaos, while setting up a move to bring Grimm toward the stadium before the end of the tournament for future chaos? This time I get a bit of a preview. Interesting that it comes from the same mangaka as SAO. Again, on the watch list. Aahhh... I was hoping to stay away from DanMachi. It's great, but it atttempts to say it's a game, when really it's more like a Mythological adventure with side elements of a gaming terms and a descending level dungeon. But it does meet criteria in a sense. (Also, having the same VA as Kirito from SAO didn't help because the main character sounds EXACTLY like Kirito with a slightly higher pitch. I couldn't get the image of Kirito out of my head as it attempted to establish our main character, whose name I barely remember as Bell Cranel.) Rewinding a bit to .hack, I remembered why I dropped it now: The pacing was so slow, I pretty much fell asleep and had to rewind a couple of times just to understand what was going on. That and I felt like I wasn't going in chronological order the further in I watched it. I'll attempt to pick it back up. sigh Btoom came up. Again, I would classify that as "survival" than "video game". And while our character come from playing the video game, the fact that it is in the real world ticks it off my list. Ah, that really long name of a show (I think it's "Problem Children Are Coming From Another World?" and what - how did I even remember that?). Now this show and NGNL are really really similar, more than Children is to SAO. Which is funny because this made the list, but NGNL was "Honorable Mention". Ok... Speaking of Honorable Mentions... Zero no Tsukaima? What? The only thing similar is that he was portaled into another world, but just randomly sucked to it for no reason beyond "I summoned a familiar". Which is pretty much a really sloppy way of bringing a main character into this fantasy world, in my opinion. Also note, fantasy world, not video game world. NGNL. Read Children above. Mirai Nikki. Haven't heard. Research required. Guilty Crown. I know of the video game, but I didn't know they made an anime. They can be used, but the website will do a kitten resampling job and make your picture look like kitten. I was able to put in 250x250 and 300x300. However, they look terrible and because it resamples badly down to 200x200 anyways, just do that part yourself. I have a theory that the reason some people might not be able to put in a 200x200 picture: The picture itself is a very large filesize, and our lovely server doesn't like big files. As such, if the size is showing into the MB range, you might want to transition it into a JPEG instead. Poking around and opening images in the forum posts leads me to a part of the site saying "size144". Poking around at user profiles and checking their pictures leads me to a part saying "size200". When I checked the maximum of everyone's pictures, Ghost Kaisar's avatar is 156x200. Nas's is 180x200. John's was 150x200. And mine, even though I put in a 250x250 and a 300x300, the server gave me back a 200x200 avatar. TL;DR: 200x200 is the max. Any higher and the server downsizes and/or kitten resamples. It diverged from the manga so much that left me wondering what the actual f*ck just happened. Meanwhile, the plot in Kantai Collection was very hot/cold. Many times, it gave me mood whiplash which I feel like I have to go to a chiropractor to get myself straightened out from it. There are some major missteps that could have been avoided as well, such as showing the middle card as the "surprise" character before she was actually introducing, not giving Fubuki her correct Kai Ni outfit, and not even showing one of the ending bosses Fubuki kills. I feel these were big missteps that could have been avoided. From my vantage point, I don't believe it's fair to compare the source material between the two franchises. Kancolle is a game. Arpeggio is a seinen manga. They both feature anthropomorphized "girls are ships" theme but the source to form the plot is vastly different. Arpeggio has a well defined plot line that the anime studio can follow, while the Kancolle characters each have their own unique and memorable characteristics, even though there are over 200+ shipgirls (but to prevent from character overload, only a couple handfuls of the girls were shown, with many only making cameo appearances). The plot of Arpeggio far outranks Kancolle, but the characters in Kancolle far outrank Arpeggio. Thankfully, there's redemption in sight for both. Kancolle announced at the end of the series that a sequel was in production and just recently they announced that it will be in a movie format, soon to be released. Arpeggio redeems itself by taking the anime plot line and veering it right back on track with the manga in the movie that was released. A second movie has also been announced along with a release date. TL;DR: Personally, I love the military genre in anime and I love both series. As such, I would recommend both Kancolle and Arpeggio to anime watchers, letting them know that while both get off to a bit of a rocky start, both have a great outlook ahead as the sequels seem to improve on their weaknesses from their initial premiere.
