Anybody watch the original Berserk anime? I just recently finished up the manga (which is amazing) and I was wondering if the original animation does it any justice.

Certainly does better at adapting the material than the Golden Age movies. That's good to hear.
On the topic of the golden age movies, they get a lot of shit but they're honestly pretty decent. If you can deal with the (admittedly pretty bad) CG then I find some of the hand-drawn animation to be fantastic. The Guts v Griffith fight scenes in particular were pretty awesome

I just finished Ping Pong. I remember seeing somebody in here a while back begging you guys to watch it. He was right. I kind of wrote it off because of the aesthetic before I knew about it, but I shouldn't have. Ping Pong was a ******* PHENOMENAL show and easily one of the best anime I've ever seen. It was one of those shows with everything in its right place, with the execution of everything nailed from start to finish. Just an absolute joy to watch.

Foundation Seldon wrote: Yessss, finally someone listens. Easily my top contender for my Anime of the Year 2014 and, as you said, is probably up there with some of the best shows I've ever seen in the medium. Just a fantastically executed character drama and the overall art direction (though divisive) is one that I wholly appreciated start to finish. Some of the background art in particular is just gorgeous.
Though Haikyuu!! is less ambitious in terms of overall direction I think if you enjoyed Ping Pong you'll similarly enjoy that show as well. It's another extremely well crafted sports show that focuses on volleyball instead. In contrast with Ping Pong, Haikyuu spends a bit more time explaining the ins and outs of the sport itself while using it as a device to tie in the specific development of the characters. Ping Pong felt like a character drama that used Ping Pong as a convenient device to tell its tale where as I feel like the "Sport" in Haikyuu takes more of a spotlight. The author does a really really good job of balancing a large cast of the characters and the added addition of a team element makes for some interesting directions for the story. Hit it up man.
I might check it out. I wouldn't normally be interested in a sports anime, I just watched Ping Pong because it got rave reviews. To be honest though I'll probably give it a miss, I don't watch much anime so when I do I try to stick to the "classics".
Speaking of which, which FMA should I watch? I hear Brotherhood is a little worse overall but I heard about a certain pitch black plot happening/emotional gut punch that happens at some point and it's got me interested.
Edit: And for when you inevitably answer "Both!", which should I watch first?

Watch the original first, then Brotherhood. Also, this is probably the first time I've heard someone say that Brotherhood was worse. There were a few good points in the original, but it felt incomplete even after watching the sequel movie. If you only plan on watching one, watch Brotherhood. If your going to watch both, watch the original first. Of course, this is just my opinion, and I'm sure someone else will disagree, but take it as you may. Sincerely, Glantix / Ice Will do, thanks.

Cat Merc wrote:So, I tried something I don't usually watch, which is rom-com.
After seeing it mentioned in a positive light multiple times on reddit, and CCP AquarHEAD's picture being one of the characters, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and watch it.
God dammit this show was hilarious, and by the end I was smiling like an idiot. The characters are simply glorious, the interactions between them more so. These guys are more than the sum of their parts, they work off each other extreme well, and it was just glorious. Simply, and utterly, glorious.
Anyone else here watched it? You didn't mention the name, but I think I know exactly what you're talking about. Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo? (The pet girl of Sakurasou)
It definitely wasn't the best anime I've yet seen, and it definitely had its flaws (corniness being the main one. If I ever watch the Nyaboron part of the cultural festival arc then I have done something terribly wrong with my life), but in spite of all that it was a sheer joy to watch, and probably one of my favorite shows yet. You're right with the idea that it's more than the sum of its parts, looking back I can't think of any one particular element which truly stood out but while I was watching the show I had nothing but a good time.
PS: Shiina is best girl

Yeah, romantic comedy is an odd genre in anime. Pretty much anywhere else it's a genre that I actively DESPISE, but the anime I've watched that could be described as romcom (Clannad, Isshuukan Friends, Sakurasou and to a lesser extent shows like Hyouka and Bakemonogatari) have been really comfy and genuinely enjoyable experiences. The next show on my list is Toradora and I'm really looking forward to that one.
