Just watched Kancolle.
My first thoughts: Man this is dumb.... at least strike witches wasn't pretending to be an entire crew in one. But at least the show is adorable. Probably the cutest girls to date found in an anime...
and for the first 2 episodes, opinion didn't change...
And then first half of 3 - hints of a drama starts to build up, but it's still all fluffy.
...
and then episode 3 ends.

Don't judge me, lol.
As long as I don't get judged for constantly rewatching Sakura Trick
I'm generally a fan of over-the-top ecchi, as long as they can manage a decent plot as well (Highschool DxD, Rosario + Vampire, Trinity 7, Fruit of Grisaia...)
Seems quite good so far, although the MC really has the personality to much more confident than he actually is...
Although "How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend" is my favorite of the new ones this season.

I just finished the emotional roller-coaster that is Nagi no Asakura. For a romance anime, this one easily topped the charts for me.
This has to be one of the first shows I have watched where I liked every single main character. Even the overly shy girl, and the guy who easily gets angry were both characters I enjoyed a lot(And I usually don't like shy or angry characters, as they seem to be easier to hate than to love). The characters also made decisions that didn't seem too illogical, every character acted in a way that made sense without being incredibly predictable.
I honestly don't know how they managed to pull off a successful romance with seven people involved. Even though one of the couples I was routing for never got together, I was still pleased with who ended up with who in the end.
The plot twist that occurred between seasons created an amazing set of problems for the characters to face, and it ramped up the drama amazingly.
Nagi no Asakura delves into some very interesting philosophical topics, mainly about change and the meaning of love. Many characters had some interesting views on these topics, so it was quite the watch on a whole different level when compared most other romance anime.
Overall, Nagi no Asakura was a purely amazing watch. If you are a fan of romance and/or drama anime, then I definitely recommend this to you.

Got through 4 episodes of this show, Ice...
and I'm quite annoyed by two of the characters, who both happen to be the main female and male lead.
I hope the show switches focus or the guy chills the **** out - because his aggressiveness is appalling. And because of how he takes it out the female lead comes off as sub-servierent to males.
The other female character, the purple hair one, makes up for a lot of the weaknesses the two mains have, she's quite wonderful.

Chisaki :3
I wouldn't say it's a super amazing romance story, but the plot goes from whiny children who don't understand love to "holy **** wtf did that seriously happen" when they go to the second season.
Wasn't a big fan of the ending, but I liked this anime mainly for just how beautiful it was. the art style is really fantastic.

I admit the ending wasn't perfect, but they tied off everything well for a romance anime. I would put it up there with Kokoro Connect. And yes, fuck you Foundation, Kokoro Connect was great.
Also, Sayu for the win.

Why is Haikyuu so good? How do I find myself genuinely caring for the progression and development of these characters? Both Ping Pong and Haikyuu are shows that have actively made me reassess my general bias against sports anime but the thing I like about Haikyuu is the focus on the dynamic of the team vs. the individual. Ping Pong focused on the 1v1 side of the sport so there was more overall focus on the internal struggle of the individual characters as they went about playing the match. Haikyuu adds that extra layer of having not only the internal struggle as the main characters deal with the events in their lives leading up into the match but the additional layer of having different personalities having to rely on eachother during the course of a team sport. And the way they've incorporated how the actual positions of the character reflect their respective personalities (the "setter" being the core of the offense of a team for example and needing to be able to know where his spikers are at any given point in a match) has made me appreciate volleyball as a sport in a much more tangible way which is not a thing I was expecting going in.
I've never gravitated to sports anime but 2014 was killing it on this front. Both Ping Pong and Haikyuu are must watches.

You're goddamn right I'm reading it. Putting it up there with Kokoro Connect is pretty much the biggest "stay away from this show" sign you could have ever thrown at me.
But the show had its moments ... Kokoro - 16 Impressions http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=141735367&postcount=18480
Kokoro - 17 Impressions http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=141976834&postcount=18701
I ended up writing a little thing in this thread for each of the episodes but these two pretty much represent my high and low.

You always have to try to find logic in character's actions, don't you? I don't see you ever being able to appreciate romance or emotional drama/stress the way I do. But hey, to each their own.
Also, I was comparing the endings Kokoro Connect and Nagi no Asakura as romance anime. As a show Nagi was miles(kilometers) better than Kokoro, but their endings left me with similar feelings of satisfaction, and both shows tied up the romances perfectly.

It's not that I can't appreciate romance or emotional drama it's that I think I have a much lower tolerance for inserted or contrived melodrama in a narrative, especially when I've seen shows nail aspects of drama or romance without falling into these traps. My problem was probably having my first dedicated high school slice of life/romance be Flowers of Evil. The high moments in Kokoro, the moments where the internal struggle between the characters were balanced perfectly with the external forces exposing the raw and unfiltered human within, reminded me of the feeling Flowers of Evil was able to consistently exude throughout the entirety of its series.
Everything else just feels like a step down in comparison.
