How about after you overheat, you get the same amount of overheat damage as now but doesn't lock up and deals damage per shot. Also, if the zealot variant overheats, the weapons cooldown time is increased.

As someone else pointed out in another thread, people will just leave them at critical areas and then switch load outs at a supply depot. This is why I prefer it to be something that is built into a suit not a deployable item.
