School Live, or otherwise known as Gakkou Gurashi! - is beginning to grind.
7 episodes, and all we've learned thus far is 3 different things, and got to see them brush with danger once, and sorta, kinda, not really, in an earlier episode. Nothing is happening in this show.............
They spend maybe 2 minutes per episode letting us peek into the mentality changes the girls are going through slowly - but it's so minimal in favor of a moe plot that I'm on the verge of giving up on this show.
But the chance of something that will finally happen keeps me going. |

for me, i found Baka To Test Shinjuku a better watch, with both better comedy and an actual serious story-line hidden behind it all.
The next would be Heaven's Lost Property - i also enjoyed it more, it's even more whackey, perverted, and out there - with, again, deep story hidden behind it.
And then there's the comedy about the Yukaza Mermaid (My Bride is a Mermaid!!) whose gay jokes had me spitting milk threw my nose. |

I Couldn't Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job is another show that does a great job of mixing in comedy with harem/action aspects.

Ikkitousen (Battle Vixens)
3/10 (Season 1)
High schools across Japan wage war with one another; the best boys and girls of each school battle it out in no-holds-barred combat for total domination. Each fighter possesses a charm that links their souls--and fate--to a character from the Three Kingdoms era of ancient China. Enter Sonsaku Hakufu, a girl possessing a charm that could see her rise to be the greatest fighter of them all...if it doesn't kill her first.
I'm a huge, HUGE fan of Three Kingdoms history...and this show pisses all over it. It was painful as a history buff to sit through this season (only three more seasons to go!) and as an anime fan...well, it's something. If you've watched Sekirei, you'll know what to expect--girls fighting each other (and having their clothes shredded in the process) in sometimes brutal fights while most of the significant male characters sit back and scheme. Honestly, everything this show does--be it the characters, animation, ecchi, etc.--has been far surpassed by Sekirei. My masochistic tendencies compel me to watch the next season, so I'll update the overall score as I go on.
But seriously...if one of the key points of the show is that Sonsaku is an idiot and that's what holds the key to her destiny...that pretty much says everything about this show.
Animation is dated but not terrible. Characters are particularly attractive, though the focus is more on trying to make them sexy than anything else. Loads of ecchi with nudity only popping up towards the final 1/3 of the season. Music is weak and sounds like something from a late-'90s fighting game.
Verdict: Pass, unless you really, really liked Sekirei and have a thing for watching girls get naked as they fight. Better yet, just watch Sekirei again.

But you know how if you are really good friends with a girl that is already dating someone (not friendzoned because she was already in a relationship when you met her), you would call that "being friend A"?
I took a step back today and realized I am the friend-A harem king.
Seriously, I now have 7 of these girls as really great friends, and no I'm not complaining either. I actually kinda prefer this XD

I don't actually call it that, but I do constantly obsess over Marika on social media, and tend to share my otaku lifestyle quite openly. Everyone loves it.
Relates well with the MC from The World God Only Knows, or Saekano.

Inspiration Academy is a high school haven for geniuses. Scientists. Mathematicians. Artists. Taketo, a first-year boy, is also a genius...at writing erotic fiction. Looked down upon and shunned by most other students (particularly the girls) Taketo works for the school newspaper as an interviewer, and his attempts at interviewing beautiful girls often place him in uncomfortable, dangerous situations. Can he survive long enough to find love and become the greatest erotic writer in history?
A mediocre ecchi comedy and disappointing harem romance, the show is saved by the fact that it's only 12 episodes long. It makes for a relatively painless weekend watch but don't expect any truly noteworthy characters; Taketo is humorous without being completely oblivious (his focus is centered on one harem candidate) and his pal, Ritsu, is quite amusing for his constant misinterpreting of Taketo's comments. Where the show struggles, however, is the female character side--Fukune is incredibly dull compared to the others and has little development over the course of the show. Utae is given the most development and, as sweet as she is, is a rather generic candidate. Raika, in my opinion, was a HUGE missed opportunity as a potential love interest given A. her constant working contact with Taketo and B. her motivations are never truly "fleshed" out. Unfortunately for the show, I couldn't help but feel as though the "wrong" candidate is chosen in the end...though it was never really much of a choice. The OVA mildly implies that the choice isn't quite final, however.
Artwork is decent, but one major problem is the fact that the characters are drawn to look young--there's no way they're even the magical "16"--so it can make the gratuitous ecchi and nudity somewhat uncomfortable. Music is above-average, with the big musical number of the final story arc being a particular highlight.
Verdict: Pass, unless you're like me and running out of ecchi shows to watch.
For the Record: Team Utae, and it's not even close.

Maybe everything died and I'm the last one here... You can enjoy SAO by overlooking all plot holes you find by turning off your brain. Thats how I managed to make it through 50 episodes. For some reason the forums have been glitchy for me, and I couldn't post anything. Every time it'd just fail to load. I loved SAO. It was one of the first ones I watched, but the real killer is that it's still one of the best looking anime I've ever seen. The world is so vibrant, and everything really pops.
I watched the 3 Madoka Magica movies. Uhm.... 10/10. I don't even like giving numbers, because I don't believe that a well formulated opinion can be boiled down to a stock value, but 10/10.
I'd already seen the series so I knew what to expect, but the movies might've done it better since they cut two hours of content, and it didn't feel like anything was missing. There were a few odd jump cuts here and there, but overall nothing felt wrong.
I must say that the soundtrack is nothing short of fantastic. I'm not even into classical music, but it was absolutely beautiful. The art isn't really my style, but its good.
The aesthetic is what elevates this series above and beyond. The witches' mind trippyness is just insane. I love the way they are handled. I've always been a fan of absurdism. It's one of my favorite styles, and I'm a huge fan of Alice in Wonderland. I think the nonsense qualities that are displayed by the witches, and the fights with them are some of the best things I've ever seen. It beats most shounen type shows that are built around fights without even trying.
Oddly enough, after watching the Madoka Magica movies I started to draw parallels between them, and Mirai Nikki of all things. Both are darker than they initially let on. Both have themes of fighting against an unfair fate. Neither have what I consider as someone who is actually evil. There's more, but that would be getting into spoiler territory.

Kanojo ga Flag wo Oraretara (If Her Flag Breaks)
8/10
Souta is a high school student that recently transferred to a new school. Following a tragic incident in which he was left as the sole survivor of a cruise ship sinking, Souta has withdrawn from the world so that others won't share in his bad luck. However, Souta possesses a gift--the ability to see "flags" on the heads of other people that can warn of impending death or failure, or promises of love and happiness. Nanami, a girl in Souta's class, is rescued by Souta after he "topples" her death flag and saves her from an accident. Drawn to him out of curiosity, Nanami works with Souta to find answers as to what is going on and to force Souta to open up to the world around him; together, the two quickly draw other girls to Souta's side and for once Souta genuinely feels happiness...but what happens when Souta discovers a death flag above his own head and can't topple it? His desperate search for answers leads him towards a dark, inescapable fate...
I loved this show. A harem show that is focused more on friendship (and comedy) than actual romance, the show moves lightning-fast towards Souta's final showdown with his own destiny. Though he amasses quite the collection of girls around him, the show avoids the typical "one episode for each girl" format and instead offers a more organic "drawn together by fate" method of establishing the harem candidates. Characters are generally the standard clich+¬s that litter harem shows, though the removal of most of the romantic overtones allows the viewer to see the character tropes in a new way--a "big sister" character that's actually in love with playing role of a, well, big sister. Or the cross-dressing girl who doesn't understand why no one believes that she's a man. The list goes on. Only a few characters openly harbor feelings of romantic attraction to Souta (which the show is kind enough to point out via the "love" flag) but there's no real progress made in establishing such relationships as the focus rests squarely with Souta rushing headlong towards his fate.
I give the show credit for presenting a cohesive ending and letting the 13 episodes tell a complete story. The mystery surrounding Souta's past and future is constantly developing at a rapid pace, and the revelation of the tie between his fate and an old story only raises the stakes. Souta is a surprisingly likeable MC and the viewer is sympathetic of his struggle to balance personal happiness with the happiness of those around him. He's a good guy and one that you'll be pulling for.
Animation is good. Girls are generally attractive and the MC is a fairly normal guy. Music was nothing special.
Verdict: Definitely watch. The show goes by in a flash and some of the characters are great. Plus, a likeable MC is a huge plus!
For the record: Since it's not really a romance between harem candidates, I'll instead go with "Best flag is Heavy Relationship flag."

Yamada-kun to Nananin no Majo (Yamada and the Seven Witches)
9/10
Yamada is in his second year in high school. Initially hoping that high school would be the place where he could find meaning in his life, Yamada's fallen back into his old habits of being an anti-social delinquent. While berating Yamada yet again, his teacher points out the beautiful, quiet Shiraishi as someone to admire and look up to. Yamada pays little heed to this advice but finds himself intrigued by her nonetheless. A chance encounter (and accident) on a stairwell results in Yamada awakening in the infirmary...inside Shiraishi's body! Yamada's eyes are opened to the world around him as he experiences the difficulties that Shiraishi struggles with on a daily basis and, after talking over their situation, he and Shiraishi (who was inside Yamada's body) figure out that kissing enables them to switch bodies...a discovery that, unfortunately, doesn't go unnoticed by certain other people. Together, the two must gather friends around them as they search out the truth behind a mysterious school legend...
What an awesome show. Holy crap. A great romantic comedy from beginning to end, it succeeds in achieving that rarified air of having a couple that the viewer actively cheers on; the show avoids the formulaic "boy and girl obviously fall in love, so let's throw a bunch of obstacles at them to keep their future together in question" and instead goes with the subtle approach of having the relationship develop naturally over time. It was refreshing to see--given the plot device that the story focuses on--that the show avoids falling into harem territory. It makes it much more impactful when another character comes to the realization that she, too, loves Yamada...but understands that her love will never be returned in kind.
The comedy flows freely throughout the show and generally succeeds more often than not. Characters are an eclectic mix that are fleshed out just enough to avoid stereotypical tropes.
Let's see...if I had to complain about something, it'd probably have to be the structure of the show. Namely, we're treated to a wonderful six or seven episodes of watching the club come together and generally having a good time. After that, however, the story of the Seven Witches comes into play and the show rushes towards the climax. Unfortunately, this makes it difficult to care for the other witches as characters--their powers, too, are quickly introduced and then basically discarded for the remainder of the show.
Animation is solid and the girls are all attractive. Shiraishi, in particular, may be one of the most beautiful characters I've seen in any show...and yet, for some odd reason, her character almost seems to be "muted" in comparison to the others; she lacks the bold, striking colors used in other characters (particularly their hair) aside from her red eyes. She is, in many ways, drawn to reflect her personality--quiet and unassuming, yet strong and resilient. Music is decent. A few moments of ecchi but no nudity.
Verdict: Must-watch. Perhaps the best romantic comedy I've seen amongst anime shows. Do yourself a favor and watch it!
For the Record: To know Shiraishi is to love Shiraishi. What an unbelievably great character!!!

It was the 'flow' that turned me off this show, ultimately.
Rather then watching an interesting Rom-com that it's set up as - we get to see an episodic mixed-harem adventure whose romantic side gets used as a plot-device rather then something to watch the show for.
what i mean is - look at Toradora. The issue all falls in line to be the same things, but a shallow look you would just see males and females acting out against each-other immaturely - aka, it's believable because the real messages are in the under-tones.
But with Yamada there is nothing to look for, nothing to find, the show gives it to you all right away, then teases you with a plot that look like a real romance might blossom from - but instead is a plot device to give the characters purpose - but as viewers, we never get to enjoy there moments together because they have none.
we're teased with a wonderful pairing we never get to actually watch.

Maybe the manga deserved 9/10 but definitely not the anime. The anime has a lot of skipped out scenes, like more character development, comedy.. Sure within the 12 episodes there were definitely character development but i still felt like it was missing something, like it needed more fleshing out. If they had made it 25 episodes I would have no problem and with that ending it would be perfect. 25 episodes gives you double the time of 13 which would mean that there would be space for *rainbows appear* everything. This would be perfect for those who wanted more romance and screen time of the 7 witches.
