Asobi ni Iku yo! (Cat Planet Cuties)
7/10
Kio is your typical high schooler with no idea of what he wants out of life. He's joined by childhood friend Manami and a quiet girl named Aoi and their lives all appear to be quiet on the island of Okinawa...until a cute girl with cat ears and a tail shows up at a memorial service that Kio is attending. Her name is Eris is she claims to be an alien! Quickly befriending Kio, the two soon find themselves in danger as various groups all seem intent on getting ahold of Eris for their own reasons. As danger approaches from all around, can anyone be trusted?
I was pleasantly surprised by this show. After catching the first two episodes on Hulu awhile back, I figured it was nothing more than a paper-thin ecchi show that never paid off (by actually showing nudity.) Well, I was wrong...the show goes far beyond ecchi and flirts with harem tropes while going all-in with action/adventure. Characters are numerous and generally entertaining, and the love triangle that slowly develops is sweet, even if the MC is your typical oblivious idiot. I won't say anything about Manami and Aoi to avoid spoilers, but I will say that they're definitely an interesting pair of love interests. Eris is cute and innocent without being annoying and the assistaroids are amusing.
I really enjoyed how, after spending most of the series as nothing more than a nuisance, the main villain actually puts together a multi-faceted plan into place that truly ups the stakes for the final arc.
For being several years old, the animation is surprisingly sharp and colorful. Girls are all cute and there's plenty of nudity to go around, particularly with the *ahem* more well-endowed characters. Nothing really stood out to me in terms of the music until episode 9; the song is simply beautiful and leads to many feels. Very well done.
Verdict: By no means a must-watch...but highly entertaining and worth the time. The OVA is actually pretty amusing, as well.

"Asobi ni iku yo!" actually translates out to "I/We came to play".
It has a lot of star trek type influences because the catians are a post-scarcity intergalactic civilization... so really all they actually have AVAILABLE to do is travel around space and **** around. Plenty of things were amusingly lampshaded "Well we thought aliens would look more alien too, but it turns out you look just like primates".
The mangaka is a big fan of his native okinawa, and used a lot of his manga to highlight how beautiful he feels it is.
I'm also quite fond of its OP for no real reason (it's not the best I've seen, but it's not the worst either)... It's no gundam wing / evangelion op

So, since I'm staying home from work for one more day:
Hoshizora e Kakaru Hashi (A Bridge to the Starry Skies)
7/10
Kazuma and his younger brother Ayumu move from the city to the small, rural town of Yamabiko, a place that Kazuma visited once a long time ago. Things get off to a rough start as the two initially take the wrong bus into town; from there, Kazuma gets lost in the woods and manages to fall out of a tree before meeting a pretty girl that offers to show him how to get back to the bus stop. Unfortunately, Kazuma stumbles while crossing a stream and ends up kissing the girl. The two are discovered by the girl's friend and she's more than happy to leave her footprint plastered to Kazuma's face. Finally able to make his way to the inn where he and his brother will be staying, Kazuma prepares for his first day of school...only to find the same two girls are in the same class as him! Will Kazuma be able to work his way out of this, or are his troubles only beginning?
A typical harem comedy/romance that actually ends with the MC deciding on the girl he wants to be with...too bad that, by the time he makes his decision, his choice is probably the least appealing of the candidates. The MC initially starts off as a strong character that is dedicated towards being a great big brother to the frail Ayumu; it's great to see a strong sense of sibling love without any of the loli/incestuous overtones that plague many anime shows. The high point of the show is watching the "harem" come together into a likeable group of friends and watching them have fun together--you actually get the sense that these people have been friends before Kazuma's arrival, which is something that many shows fail to convey. Unfortunately, the show loses steam as the focus shifts more towards the romance aspect of it; I'd honestly rate this higher had the show ended with a candidate from episode 10 or 11. Instead, I had to sit through the final episode shaking my head. The MC, too, becomes less interesting as he goes from a concerned older brother to an oblivious idiot.
Animation is solid, characters are pretty and the ecchi is limited, with actual nudity only appearing in one episode. Music is inoffensive and largely forgettable.
Verdict: Worth a watch for the great "slice of life" story, overall enjoyment depends largely upon how you view the chosen love interest.
For the record: Team Hina, though she isn't really a harem candidate.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Season 5 (First Half)
It's been awhile since I've watched any MLP, and tbh it was before I really started watching anime. My tastes were a lot less.... Discerning back then. I was actually afraid I wouldn't like the show. I'm glad to say that is not the case. The show still has stellar animation, and the humor is mostly spot on. Now, it is a show for young girls so each episode more or less has it's morals, but overall they're mostly handled well. The first episode, (and by extension the second since every season opener and closer is a two-parter), felt a little off to me though. The moral I felt could have been handled a little better. Despite this fact, the show has definitely become very aware of it's more adult audience with references to stuff like Star Wars, Game of Thrones, and Metal Gear.
I wonder if it's better that it acknowledges them though. There is such a thing as being too self aware. I guess that's really up to personal preference, and I do always enjoy a bit of meta humor. The first few episodes also seemed to over-rely on musical numbers. I love a good musical, but they were strictly used for transitional scenes and felt out of place. The first few seasons didn't need to use music to make an event interesting.
The characters are as delightful as ever. I really think that Twilight has come far, and Pinkie Pie has really hit her stride. It's easy for characters like Pinkie to quickly become old or annoying, but she's managed to tread that very thin line and come off of it being absolutely awesome. It's also good to see that the lessons from the first 4 seasons have actually paid off, and the Mane 6 don't keep making the same dumb mistakes over and over.
I'd say that s5 (the first half, for the second half isn't on Netflix yet), continues with the show's outstanding quality. However, s3 is still my favorite.
P.S. This is totally close enough to anime that it should be posted here.
P.P.S. Ok, I just wanted to write a review of it, and didn't have anywhere else to put it. I'm not part of many forums.

Just watched the K-On! movie. I realized something. I can't handle endings Especially ones where the outcome is evident from the beginning. Watching the struggle, and the journey to get to the end just makes it that much more poignant. I got choked up at K-On! of all things. I never should have watched the Mother's Rosario arc of SAO. I never cried at anything before that, but now the floodgates are open. After that, I was unprepared for the permanent scarring that Angel Beats brought on.

Oretachi ni Tsubasa wa Nai (We Without Wings--Under the Innocent Sky)
7/10
Takashi is a frail high school student that frequently loses himself in a dream world where he's a powerful knight.
Shuusuke is a charming young man that works at a restaurant while freelancing for a men's magazine.
Hayato is a solitary man that takes up odd jobs and has earned the nickname "Dora" (a reference to Dracula) because he only comes out a night.
Three separate lives, each with their own dreams, interests and relationships...yet all our bound by a single fate. What happens when their lives--and those of the people around them--begin to intrude upon each other?
Wow. This was definitely a...weird...show. Not really a harem show...not really a comedy...not really a drama. It's hard to describe. The frequent POV shifts are all a bit confusing for the first four episodes or so, until the truth begins to emerge as to what exactly is going on. Hayato is a great character as the gruff loner with a heart of gold. Shuusuke is constantly entertaining as he constantly finds himself in humorous situations. Takashi, unfortunately, is clearly the weakest and least interesting of the three. Supporting characters are an interesting collection--from an absurdly sexualized loli (who I think is supposed to be like 8 or 9) to goth gangsters--and something's always going on that will make you laugh. Unfortunately, the show suffers from the common "let's spend 10-11 episodes building up to the climax and then tie everything up in one neat episode" trope that always fails to satisfy (considering the fact that it doesn't really answer much of anything.) That said, the story structure is original and the characters presented within are some of the most memorable ones you'll come across.
Animation is solid and stylized. Music is decent. Loads of ecchi and nudity...but to be honest, they're completely out of place. Seriously, do we need a pre-teen showing us that she's wearing "sexy" underwear? I suppose you could argue that it's fitting for such a gonzo show, but it just came off as feeling forced to me.
Verdict: worth a watch, but you may struggle to make it through the first few episodes until you get a better grasp of what's happening.

So much this. Would love to see more episodes...but at the same time, the show ends on a pretty high note and I'd hate to see a third season potentially take a step back.
