Usually a show with that many cute characters I'd sit through, anyways *strike witches, uppoete, etc* but it felt grindish. |

Saikin, Imouto no Yousu ga Chotto Okashiindo ga (Recently, My Sister is Unusual)
5/10
Yuya, following the remarriage of his father, must welcome Mitsuki into his life as his step-sister. Things quickly become complicated when a ghost named Hiyori informs Mitsuki that she needs Yuya to fall in love with her in order to get to heaven...and to do so, she'll need to use Mitsuki's body!
Yeah...an ecchi romance comedy between step-brother and sister. Though it only clocks in at 12 episodes, it's still a struggle to finish; Mitsuki and Yuya really have no chemistry outside of Yuya trying to act as an actual big brother and the surrounding cast of characters are dull and uninteresting. Brief moments of comedy (usually Mitsuki finding herself in all sorts of degrading positions/actions) keep things moving along but overall, this about as average as you can get.
Animation is colorful and crisp and is very ecchi-oriented...though there's no actual nudity.

Sigh...
Sankarea
3/10
Furuya is high school boy living at a temple alongside his father, younger sister and senile grandpa. He's also obsessed with zombies. So much so that his ultimate dream is to date one! So he spends his free time working on various potions to reanimate the dead...in doing so, he spies a beautiful girl named Rea shouting disturbing, personal things into a well. Following the death of his cat, Furuya works feverishly towards perfecting his reanimation potion and is soon discovered by Rea; rather than being repulsed, however, Rea takes an interest in his work and begins helping him. As they slowly draw closer, Rea makes Furuya promise her that if she dies he'll bring her back to life as a zombie and "take responsibility for her..."
So, this show pretty much sucked. Failure as a romance, ecchi or even comedy show. Furuya is an unappealing MC and very little actually happens over the course of the show; boy dreams about falling in love with a zombie girl, boy meets girl, girl dies, girl is brought back as a zombie, boy studies her...and that's it. There's no real sense of romance developing between Furuya and Rea after she dies (unlike when she was alive) and both characters suffer as a result. Indeed, the only truly interesting character is the clich+¬d childhood friend/tomboy that just so happens to have matured into a beautiful woman that any man would desire (except for the MC, obviously.)
At 12 episodes plus 1 "special" and 1 OVA, it's a short series and yet it still comes across as being almost entirely "filler." Very little story progression is made over the season...only to have a giant monkey wrench thrown in during the special episode that hints a far bigger (and more dangerous) story on the horizon.
Animation is colorful...but the characters are terrible. Furuya, for one, is drawn to resemble a cat (eye shape, hair looking like ears, etc.) and Rea...well, she's pretty as a human at least. Once she becomes a zombie, however, she loses her attractiveness. Ranko is a babe. Some moments of ecchi and brief nudity (at least they picked the best character to show nude.) Music is decent...which makes it about the best part of the show.
All in all, don't waste your time on this one.

Good news, everyone! A late night/early morning trip to the ER has revealed that my kidney stone is *only* 6mm, so I may get to have it surgically removed. You know, the same surgery that put my then-wife into a two week coma. Good times!
And now, without further ado:
Trinity Seven
6/10
Arata's quiet life is turned upside-down following a catastrophe that results in his cousin Hijiri disappearing right before his eyes; he soon finds himself enrolled in the Royal Biblia Academy--a school for mages--and discovers that he is a Demon Lord Candidate, a mage with immense power that can create worlds. Arata sets off on a quest to find Hijiri and in so doing, win over the "Trinity Seven"--a collection of beautiful mages that are the strongest magic users in school. But as Arata grows stronger, dangerous foes reveal themselves and the fate of the world hangs in the balance.
I actually started and stopped watching this show about three times. The initial drama surrounding Hijiri's disappearance is a great opening...but it quickly gets tossed aside in favor of harem comedy clich+¬s that form the bulk of the show (only to return for the final story arc.) The harem members are typical trope characters that set up predictable, though still amusing, comedic misadventures for the MC. The main problem with the harem is that, for obvious reasons, there are seven members...which means that roughly half of the 12 episode run is your standard "one episode at a time to show why we should care for each harem candidate." The story doesn't really begin to take hold until the final four episodes or so...which leads to my biggest complaint with the show--the MC totally drops the ball. We start out with a young man that loses a beloved family member in front of his eyes, and he vows to do anything and everything to bring her back--a potential badass, if you will, that will let nothing stop him. Yet as soon as he steps foot on campus he becomes a typical perv who focuses only on the beautiful women surrounding him and his uncanny ability to magically remove their clothing. Yeah, deep stuff...
Animation is solid, characters are all attractive (particularly Lilith) and the music is undistinguished. Loads of ecchi but no actual nudity.
Only recommended to harem comedy fans.

But wait, there's more!
No Game No Life
5/10
Sora and Shiro are a brother/sister hikikomori team that dominates the world of video games. They also happen to hate the world around them. So when a mysterious offer is made to them to leave this world in favor of a new one, they jump at the opportunity. What they find is a world where, after an ancient war destroyed much of the old world, the sixteen sentient races of the planet settle their disputes via games. As luck would have it, the humans are in last place and their continued existence is in question. Can Sora and Shiro unite humanity and win the biggest game of their lives?
I had high hopes for this show based on the comments others have made; I was, to some extent, disappointed with how things turned out. The biggest problem is the simple fact that Sora and Shiro are the same characters at the end of the show as they are at the beginning--there is ZERO character development in either of them. They're the best of the best...and no matter how hard the show tries to throw you off ("Oh, no! Something unexpected happened!) each story concludes with the "our victory was assured before the game even started," throwaway line. Honestly, the main feature of the two that the story is based upon--shut-ins that shun society--is also the biggest handicap to actually liking them or having any interest in what happens to them. They are, put simply, unlikable people. The story tries to soften them up at times and bring out some humanity in them but never seems to follow through. Take Steph, for example--Sora wants her to fall in love with him as he's an 18 year-old virgin. So what happens? They use their power over her to constantly humiliate her in poor attempts at comedy. And the whole 11 year-old sister as a loli character trope is just creepy.
So, what did I actually like about the show? Hmm...I guess the parts would be how they explain the ins-and-outs of how they go about winning the games. This isn't simple "think one step ahead of the enemy" deals--these are finely crafted strategies that show how smarts will always win in the end.
Animation is vivid and colorful throughout. Music is above-average. Frequent moments of ecchi without any actual nudity.
And for f*cks sake...she's 11!!! She should have ZERO sex appeal!!!
Verdict: Pass, unless you're out of stuff to watch (like me.)

I cannot believe you gave No Game No Life such a low rating! I would definitely have to disagree with you.
For starters, I will say that I do agree that Sora and Shiro do not really go through any character development. They are sort of set up as Gods in their own universe. Everything they are built on and founded on is their focus, gaming.
You can usually find out a lot about a character by finding out their goals, what they spend their time doing and how they do it. For Sora and Shiro it's not just about gaming, its about depth. Because, while these are games, their opponents are not simply pawns or NPC.
Both Shiro and Sora come off as confident and secure, also arrogant at times. Especially, the brother.
I will say the only real disappointment about the show was the brother/sister romance concept, which I am sick of. And it seems that there is no real opening for any other idea of a relationship outside of that one for either Sora or Shiroe. Both characters are completely dependent on the other to the point that they are left paralyzed if the other isn't in the same room with them. Which does leave both characters extremely lacking.
However, I didn't watch No Game No Life for the romance or even the characters; I watched it for the plot and the concept. It's extremely well written to the point where you are just consumed by the story. And, while the characters are hard to relate to they are set up as "God-like" figures. I would think Sora and Shiro are more like very beautiful otherworldly creatures that you can watch and learn from.
They are very pretty to look at and charming. I would give the show a 7/10, at the lowest. |

This is not simply a show you can just pass up. Heck, the Shitori episode is absolutely a must watch, if you absolutely have no time to watch the whole season. And the 'Fake End' episode? Absolutely ******* brilliant.
It's a show that while able to be funny and have its moments of fanservice, can still be serious and make you think.
While I do agree that there wasn't much character development, the scope of the whole story is way bigger than just taking over the animal girl kingdom XD
Their ultimate goal is to take on the god of that world...and to me that's like only looking at the first 12 episodes of Death Note. I guess I do rate it higher based on what it could be, but the art style and large variety of interesting elements all put together beautifully are what I absolutely love.

Hata is a student at the Tomo Agriculture School and has a huge crush on the famous idol, Kusakabe Yuka. Hata's life is shattered with the announcement that Yuka has suddenly retired...only to pick back up when a girl looking just like her transfers to his school!
That's about the only way to describe the show, as trying to say anything further would only sound absurd...without actually conveying just how absurd the show really is. Picture an ecchi comedy combined with Harvest Moon and you'll start to get an idea of what this show is about. As a romance, the show falls flat. As an ecchi comedy it's decidedly so-so. As an educational tool on farming, it's...good? Seriously, it's really hard to describe the wackiness of this show.
The animation is pretty poor--the girls aren't pretty at all and everything has a washed-out look to it. Music is decent. Some moments of ecchi but no nudity.
Verdict: Watch only if you're looking for some chuckles.

Lupin The Third - The Story of Fujiko Mine
9/10
i looooooved it. I've always been a fan of Lupin the Third's anime since Toonami held midnight slot and aired the TV series, and i can't imagine Lupin having anyone else's voice other then the dubs, and this wonderful addition to the legend may be the best yet.
As put by Lupin himself, "Jigen, we're the side characters to this story, wether we like it or not." We finally get to see who Fujiko Mine really is, after 10 years of watching Lupin shows and movies *Their's tons!* And it takes place before Lupin meets Jigen or the samurai.
The show's first episode is how Lupin and Fujiko meet, second episode is how Fujiko meets Jigen, third is the samurai, then from there they start to meet each other and we get to see how they all first came together. It's awesome to watch, especially with the VERY UNIQUE ART STYLE *wink foundation* But what's truly impressive was how daring, real, and charming the cast and stories were.
Fujiko does not **** around. I never really understood how real the business of thievery is when you're not Lupin coming up with extravagant plans after tons of research. She has to kill to survive sometimes, she's not a murderer, it's always in order to survive, but she has to do what she has to do - she's on her own and has no one else to look out for her.
The show will reveals her past and what it means to be Fujiko Mine, and i mean that in a literal sense, take it as you may.
The show is exciting to watch often, the action is great, the twists aren't breath taking, but they're suited to the story well enough for Lupin to bring on the charm. And charm is something this show exhibits tons of. Fujiko is an enthralling character, very deep, just like Lupin.
And Lupin's reasonings for chasing her seems so superficial, but when he smiles at the screen and gives a half ass clever explanation, you can't help but believe that's just how he feels. And it's pretty amazing that they brought him to life so well to build that kind of connection with a character.
Zannigata is, as always, a fascinating to watch detective. He's sometimes portrayed as an idiot and it upsets me, he's a genius and a serious character, and the way this show portrays him is spot on. Tough, intelligent, not easy to fool. His only problems are the rookies under him.
BEWARE THOUGH: Intense amount of nudity, explicit scenes and relationships. Even Zennigata is ganna get his groove on. And the show cares not about which gender is doing it to who. There's even a bit of child **** and abuse that ties deeply into things.
I found the ending very satisfying, and it has a twist that made me laugh. |

I like this review format you guys have been adopting lately, it feels like the level of discourse in this thread has definitely improved as a result. Keep it up guys!
Don't have much to say on the anime front unfortunately as I haven't been watching much of it lately. Im behind on pretty much all of my shows at the moment coming in from this season ... but here's my impressions from eps 2 and 3 of Charlotte which I don't think I ever got around to posting here. :P
Charlotte - 2
The gag with the teleporter getting lunch had me rolling, this show is the absolute best when it's focusing on the comedy.
Charlotte - 3
Yeah ... no. I feel like this was the first real misstep for the series. It feels like they were trying to fit a story that should have been told over more episodes into a single one and the result is a bit of a mess as the characters rush through events one after another. The progression from "I literally just met you" to "I'll totally trust in your plan" to Im going to have my non-powered friends do a couple stealth takedowns on your hired goons" to "Im going to have this random character confess his feelings for you" was just, well, a mess. Beyond how nonsensical the plan was I dont feel like they were able to hit the sort of emotional notes given the lightning fast pace and ultimately the amount of time we had to spend with each of the characters.
The comedy fell really flat as well.
Mina Longstrike wrote: Its a goofy wish fulfillment ecchi and as it happens there are BETTER goofy wish fulfillment ecchi's... that don't involve loli-pandering.
As someone who genuinely enjoyed No Game No Life I have to agree on this front, definitely one of the shows more noticeable weak points. Have you seen Shokugeki no Soma yet? Absolute blast with far less emphasis on the fanservice (... after the first few episodes).
In non-anime related news I've taken the first step in joining the glorious master race. Bought almost all of my PC components from newegg yesterday, really looking forward to building the thing when all the parts arrive in the next week or so.
Still need to decide on a graphics card to go with ...
