Killer? In a dropship? You have a lot to learn. Dropship pilots are the most underpaid class in the game. We get on average 200 points per match (on a good one). If you aren't in an A-DS.
Anyways, if I'm ever on at the same time as you, I can teach you. <3

Squad up. Its easier to get kills and assists if you are one of several shooting at a red or group of reds vs solo.
Also, hack what you can. Otherwise, its mostly just time.
Don't let it stress you out. Its better to take a break and come back when you have some passive SP to spend than to ruin the game for yourself,

Yeah def remember you're earning passive SP all the time, so you'll be able to invest SP over time regardless.
As for solo play, I will take that to mean not running with other blues - yes you can be effective, but only really as a scout. Other times, you don't have to squad, just stick with the blues. Squad usually more fun though. I'd say try all sorts of things out, you'll learn different things each time you try a different play style and / or different suit fits etc. Try and figure out which style you like more, and think about investing more into that over time. |

Just found out about this thread and the Learning Coalition. Awesome, can someone tell me how I can fit in? I've had a Dust character for about a year, have 12 million SP and like to focus on logistics (I have sunk some points into heavy, swarm and sniper skills cuz sometimes I've needed to switch out of logistics in pub matches to counter certain threats). I've only played public matches and would like to experience more teamwork through a corporation and for PC. I have learned that PC can be quite time intensive and the gameplay tends to funnel people into a specific style (e.g. more emphasis on uplinks than nanohives). I'm not a new player but haven't really worked with any of the more experienced players...just learning on my own. I'm a casual player too, I don't have the time to spend hours playing Dust or other games. Would I be able to join BSOT or is there another way I can get in on the Learning Coalition so I can improve my play and move beyond public matches? |

What it is: An in game extension of the Rookie Training Grounds made possible by community volunteers.
How It Works: Join this chat channel: Learning Coalition Then speak up. Tell us what you want.
First we will assess how new you are and go from there. We can teach you everything you need to know fr setting up your mic to how fittings work. From there, we can help you choose a trade, or help you improve on one you have started. Also note that brand new students are eligible for 2,000,000 ISK grants. If a brand new player chooses to do so, he can join Immortal Guides, a training corp for players around the 500k SP to 2mil SP mark. It teaches the basics of combat, economics, and the meta game that you will experience in New Eden. If you happen to like a certain play-style, it becomes something of a 'trade'. When you choose a trade, you may join Learning Coalition College. It is a corp that gives you ISK to learn, and designed for slightly more experienced players 2mil-6mil. They will walk you through to your proto-suit and above, if you choose. However, joining Learning Coalition College is not required to learn from us. From there on, Mango and Friends networking agency can help you find the corp that is right for you if you want to get into FW and PC, hardcore. The Mango has connections just about everywhere and a good word from a training alliance can do wonders.
Beyond grants and a formal military service education, the Learning Coalition offers something to newberries that no other training institution offers, nor can be achieved without acceptance into an A-list corp----> the opportunity to play with players that have been here since the closed beta. A newberry has the chance to squad with some of the best players in New Eden, who will protect him, teach him the Art of War, and otherwise prevent pub stomps (students who wish to specialize in vehicles will also have access to free top tier vehicles); all courtesy of the Mango's network of Friendship throughout the absolute best corps.
One of the greatest things the Learning Coalition provides to its students is Planetary Conquest training ops. These are real PC battles run between Immortal Guides and Learning Coalition College. They range from dropship flying lessons and LAV destruction derbies to skirmishes between two teams of students with a few mentors in as advisors. This means a student can receive experience running PCs like the top corps do, acting as a FC (battle commander), or SL (squad leader). The best part is that gear is limited to meta 2 and below (STD, MLT) so even new players are on relatively equal footing with veterans. To get into our PC training program, you must either pay a 5 mil entry fee OR join Learning Coalition College as a student (Recommendation from IG director and 1.5 mil ISK). IG students are permitted no more than 2 PC battles during their time in IG. Learning Coalition College students may play as much as available.
The Learning Coalition has become huge, and because of this, we now have more mentors, instructors, and fellow newberries for you to play with who specialize in anything you could want to learn about. We will find you the best mentor possible to teach you everything you need to know.
Upon completion of our extensive curriculum, you have the option to receive a Certificate (recommendation) from a top tier player in the area of your trade to aid you in joining the corporation you choose, as our goal is to make newberries into who they want to be, not what we want we want them to be.
This high quality education does come at the cost of having a small number of available spots for students, as grants from Learning Coalition College are expensive to keep constant. This does not mean we will ever deny an eager student education; only Learning Coalition College grants.

Recruiting from the Learning Coalition student body:
First some ground rules. Please do not post recruitment ads in Learning Coalition chat. That is not what that channel is for. However, once you have someone in your squad you are free to tell them about how great your Corp is and what your plans for the future are. If you like how they play, let them know you would be willing to accept them in your Corp if they wanted to apply. Its called Graduation folks.
The Learning Coalition is a collection of Trade Schools, Training Groups, and private tutors that help new players learn to be effective solders. We are trying to get them ready to meet the requirements of the Corps they wish to join. Some leave early to join casual or small independent Corps, while others stick around longer until their skills have developed enough to get into top PC Corps.
From my own experience as CEO of Immortal Guides, I find the average development time for a student is about 2 months. Some take longer, and some develop more quickly. It usually depends on how many hours a day they play the game. Immortal Guides has had about 3 waves of graduation since it became a Basic Training Corp in October of 2013. Although we have individuals coming and going all the time, a GÇ£waveGÇ¥ is when a group of students start to become very effective, the CorpGÇÖs weekly KDR starts to rise above 1, and then several of the top students get accepted in a large PC Corp, or decide to form their own Corp. You can pretty much tell where Immortal Guides students are in their development cycle by watching my CorpGÇÖs weekly stats.
Having members leave is part of the expectation of a training Corp, and something to be celebrated. Although students that want to stick around for casual play, or to become mentors in their own right, are always welcome as long as they want to stay. The ones who move on to other Corps though, generally remain in the Learning Coalition chat channel, so we continue to stay in touch wherever they may go. At this point some of our early graduates can practically be considered Veteran players, and they continue to help develop our new members through Learning Coalition chat. I am always proud to see Immortal Guides alumni making an impact on New Eden.
Of course not all Immortal Guides members are students. We also have highly experienced Vets join Immortal Guides every once in a while, and it is always nice to have some instructors on staff to provide their advice in Corp chat and on the Corp forum. But they are the minority. Most of my students instruction come from members of other Corps who squad with them or answer their questions in Learning Coalition chat.
I imagine the other Learning Coalition training Corps are much the same in these regards, although with some of them specializing more, there may be some differences.
Squadding with a student in Learning Coalition chat has benefits on both sides. On the one hand as an experienced player you are able to give them advice which will help them develop into a skilled mercenary. On the other hand you are getting a feel for what kind of person they are, whether they are fun to play with, whether they seem to understand their role, whether they can shoot straight, whether they are a team player, etc. If they are good and you like them, then tell them that if they applied to your Corp you would happily accept them. If they are not there yet, but they are fun to play with and showing promise, suggest to them that once they get some more practice and start doing better that they should consider sending in an application. A friendly suggestion like that can stick with a person, and when they do get good, they my choose your Corp over other prospects due to those early words of encouragement.
I do ask that if you are squadding with new players for Learning Coalition chat they you hold up your end of the bargain and try to advise the player and help them develop. Tell them if they are doing something wrong, but be understanding and encouraging. When they get good, they will remember those people who helped them along the way.
Hand/Eye coordination cannot be taught. For everything else there is the Learning Coalition.

I've been on Dust since open beta, but I'm still not very good. I've also not played in an actual squad (as in one that co-operates). I mainly run scout, and transport pilot (I can't keep steady enough for a combat pilot) depending on the situation. I've noticed that transport is largely unused outside of an organized group--understandably--and I'm looking to become better as both a scout and a pilot, as well as finally get the experience of working in a cohesive group. Also I want to thank Fox Gadan for his written guides, because they helped me go from an absolutely awful player who barely manages to break even in a match to good enough to actually afford an assault dropship (which I am far from able to effectively pilot) without hours of grinding through matches that are basically just death-after-death. I can join a squad and get some help right? |
