Update for fall anime:
The fruit of Grisaia This show just got super interesting now that they have introduced all of the characters and respectove backstories. I hope it continues to get dark.
Wolf girl and black prince I don't usually like these kinds of shows, but definitely my kind of humor. The guy continues to be a **** yet this girl struggles so hard to like him...and then PLOT TWIST. Highly reccommend.
Your lie in April Currently my favorite show, finally a cute romance show with no ecchi, and a fantastic soundtrack to boot. It has a lot of moments that make me smile really really big if that makes any sense.

Your Lie In April is an absolutely fantastic watch.
I thought the violin was pretty good, the piano recitals are out-right amazing. People may actually become fans of classical music after listening to some of the pieces the latest 2 episodes have had.
This show is a work of art from top to bottom, I wasn't expecting to find a show i liked more then Log Horizon or Fate Stay Night, I'm blown away.
This show didn't need fan-service. You get big ass smile service instead. |

The music sounds like something from the ninja turtles first movie *early 90's themes were both terrible and mind-consuming* The VA's quality isn't nearly what it is now - and the plot to this show is obviously rushed and noticeable not even 10 minutes in.
Anime movies in general were terrible with very, very few exceptions. But if you ever try an anime movie night again and you pick Heaven's Lost Property's second movie, let me know ;D |

So I'm about halfway through Kokoro Connect and it's pretty decidedly mediocre. I was enjoying it well enough up until episode 3 because before that point it was still establishing the nuances of its world and set itself up more as a light hearted comedy rather than anything substantially more than that but then it introduced the drama and everything sort of went to ****.
Unmarked Spoilers Below~ Unmarked Spoilers Below~ Unmarked Spoilers Below~
1. The fact that only the female characters in the show have been shown to be carrying any sort of emotional baggage bugs me.
2. The fact that the female character's "backstory" amounts to having some sort of emotional "trauma" that's magically solved within the span of 5 minutes with a pep talk and a kick to the balls before the show passes the buck to the next girl bugged me.
3. The hilarious amount of success our MC, who has had no formal training dealing with these sort of issues, has with dealing with cases in which people were either 1. Almost Raped or 2. Dealing with a history of domestic violence so thoroughly broke my suspension of disbelief that the show hasn't come close to recovering in my eyes since.
Like ignoring the extremely heavy handed style of story telling it's employing with packaging both backstory and the "cure" to all of our female character's problem in a single segment I'm also sort of annoyed that they dropped the body switching line at the moment where our character's had started using it in interesting ways. There was enough story telling fuel there with the different ways body switching could have been used to expose the different faces of the various characters in Kokoro without dropping it and switching to a different story telling gimmick at the halfway point in the series. At this point I'm just really ready to finish this series and move on to something that doesn't remind me why I typically avoid highschool dramas.

As for main character deaths in shows I'm pretty neutral on the whole thing. If the author can keep his characters alive without feeling like they're only alive because of plot armor then I'm fine with them staying alive. It's when you have to bend the plot/scenarios in 20 different directions to justify someone making it out of a bad spot that I become annoyed. Well so far, I've heard the reason Attack on Titan is on hiatus is because they are going with the direction of "let the manga go ahead with it's thing, and then we'll animate it" - instead of the crap they pulled with Bleach and Naruto and trying to do fillers.
I haven't heard numbers of viewers or DVD sales on it, but it's pretty close to being "best release of the year". It had two explosive well animated openers via music from Linked Horizon, a blood and gore filled survivalist type setting, pokes mockery at religion, involves violence, discrimination, a political arena, militancy, character growth, and a strong female lead to boot with a side male lead that, according to internet reactions - if he were real, would make the Beatles, Leonardo de Caprio, Brad Pitt, and Justin Bieber fangirling pale in comparison.
*vomits at mentioning Justin Beiber*
Anyways, to top it off, Team Four Star and the Fine Bros put out a parody and a reaction video respectively to add to it. Finally, Funimation and Toonami were on top of this so hard, by the time the 1st season was ending on Crunchyroll and in Japan, they were already starting to air the dubbed version in the States already.
Get on the ******* hype train already.

The show blew up in popularity and a lot of people watched it, I'm not arguing that. I'm also not arguing whether or not the show dominated the charts in Japan and was popular enough over here in the west to prompt Toonami to pick it up (by the way, it started airing in the states 8 months after the final episode aired in Japan). I'll even grant you that it brings a seriously interesting world to the table, 3D maneuver gear is a way to make everyone a practical Spiderman in terms of acrobatics. It's really neat. It's world is really interesting! If it's story telling or overall execution were half as good as its world building then I wouldn't be complaining.
Having a show be popular doesn't say anything about that show's inherent quality, and this IS what I'm arguing. That other shows came out in 2013 that were simply better told or better executed stories. For all that Attack on Titan brings to the table with its genuinely interesting concept it aint perfect.
- The "strong female lead" can't go two seconds without obsessing over the main character. Erin Erin Erin Erin over and over and over. She's completely reliant on him on like a fundamental psychological level which just doesn't strike me as something that'd be inherent to a "strong female lead."
- The pacing problems come to shine in the Trost arc in which our main character spends two episodes looking at a rock and then two more episodes looking down the barrel of a cannon. Zzz. Shouldn't be a surprise to anyone familiar with the Japanese release of the show though, it was clear that they were just barely getting the episodes out in time for each week's deadline and cheap, time saving measures were employed to help with this. It had serious problems on the production side.
Having well animated OPs, or attractive main characters, or a Toonami release, or parody videos released online doesn't mean the show's **** smells good. I had fun with it and enjoyed it ... I just couldn't rightfully call it the best show that came out in 2013.

*Unmarked Kokoro Spoilers up to ep. 11* *Unmarked Kokoro Spoilers up to ep. 11* *Unmarked Kokoro Spoilers up to ep. 11*
There's definitely a writing/basic plot problem I feel like, beyond what I talked about in my previous post I feel like the "Unlocking Desires" arc is an especially good example of why Kokoro Connect fails on a fundamental storytelling level. Ignoring that the gimmick in and of itself was a lot less interesting than body switching it went on to have really obviously inconsistent mechanics and drama bait that lead absolutely no where when all was said and done.
The biggest issue is that the show establishes that the entire basis for this arc, unlocking desires, can essentially be "turned off" if they really want to avoid doing something. It'd be inconvenient if blondie went around beating the crap out of every male character or if our male characters just started having sex with everything with 2 legs so our author completely washes his hands of the situation. It just felt like a copout instead of exploring the potential storytelling avenues something like this could have had. So what you're left with is a bunch of characters randomly acting in distinctly uncharacteristic ways for no other reason than to create some illusion of conflict. They conveniently ignore that our main characters should be able to "turn off" their constant tendency of invoking emotional pain on eachother and our characters in turn ignore the fact that no one is in completely control of their emotions during this time, acting more sensitive then what should be the case given what they know of the predicament they're in.
Nothing happened in that arc that couldn't have happened during the course of a typical highschool drama if the author was willing to write out the scenarios that lead to the specific situations occuring. At best it was lazy and at worst it was a clear example of the author writing himself into a corner with the specifics of "Unlocking Desires" and just throwing his hands up and saying "**** it". Even the Inaba line in which Balloon Vine makes the case that she'll burn everything to the ******* ground is completely dropped because our MC falls out of a tree randomly. Weak.
I'm enjoying the "everyone has turned into kids" arc but at this point I couldn't justifiably give the show more than a 2/5.
