The man felt cold as he opened his eyes. The air felt warm in this place. The man say up and felt soft grass on his hands. And for the first time he realized something. He had died. Finally looking at himself the man saw that he was not a hulking giant, adorned in heavy armor... But a man again. He was as he had been before the metamorphasis, a simple man. Brutus began to stand up. He began to take in his surroundings. He was on a hill, with plains stretching out as far as the eye could see. People milled about aimlessly around him. Brutus spoke softly to himself "So... This is purgatory. It is real." A familiar voice answered back behind him. "Yes Brutus. Purgatory is real. And now you've finally joined." Brutus swung around to see the most beautiful sight he had in years. Standing before him was the family he had lost so long ago. "My love... You... I've missed you so much." Brutus slowly walked to his wife and children. When he reached them his wife embraced him as she used to. The wife and husband began to sob into one another's arms.after what seemed like an eternity Brutus finally broke from the embrace to see his children. His son and daughter stood by him. And both smiled. Brutus scooped up his daughter in his arms and spun as she giggled. When he put her down he clasped his hand on his son's shoulder before hugging him as well. "How touching." A new voice called to the family. Brutus turned to see a hooded figure. "Who are you?" The hooded figure didn't move. But when it spoke another voice sounded. "I'm no one." Brutus shook his head "No I know who you are. You're the god of purgatory. Mephilius. The stranger." The hooded figure stood up straight. "I thought I was forgotten. All those of their time are dead already." Brutus walked between his family and the strange god. "I thought that all the gods died, after the old gods came back." The stranger shrugged. "No one suspects the stranger." Brutus sighed at the god. "Why are you here?" The hood moved from left to right to look around in an sarcastic manner. "Because this is my domain? Or maybe because if I go to the mortal plain I'll die. Could be because I need to tell you something. In private." Brutus looked to his family then to the god. "Anything you have to say to me you can say to my family." What sounded almost like a sigh came from the god. "You don't belong here. Not yet." Brutus raised an eyebrow. "You died. But you aren't supposed to be dead. You are in a bit of a prophecy. A big one." Brutus looked dumb founded. "What would you have me do? Go back? My body lays broken on the ground. Even if I came back it would be useless." The stranger pondered this for a moment. "Well, yes. But you are not dead. The giant, is dead." Brutus looked at the god like he was a fool. "You see. That flame. The one that was given to you so recently? It's special. Very special." Brutus simply sighed. "I'm going to send you back as you are now. What is left of your giant body will break down and metamorph into what you are now. You'll be a human again." "I do not understand what you mean stranger." "I'm going to take you." The stranger raised a robed arm at Brutus. "Put your consciousness into a new body. That will be created by the corpse you left behind." Brutus just shook his head. "No. No no no. I do not want to go back to a world like that." The stranger just shook its head. "Then everyone you know will die. You are one of the factors in the mortal realms end. You either die now and there will be no hope. Or you die later when the world has settled down. Your choice." Brutus turned to his family. The looks they had for him were mixed. His son and wife looked at him as if he should no the answer. His daughter just looked perplexed. After some time Brutus finally made his decision. "Will you wait for me my love?" His wife simply nodded as a tear rolled down her cheek. The man sighed sadly as he knelt down to his daughter. "My little butter cup. Daddy has to leave again." Brutus was choking back tears as he spoke to his daughter. "I don't know how long I'll be gone but I promise that I'll find you and your brother and mother again." She nodded her head. "I love you daddy. I'll miss you." His daughter clutched onto Brutus before he could stand up. His heart broke as he gently nudged her away. "Alright stranger. Send me back." The stranger nodded as a painful ray of golden fire engulfed Brutus. The last thing that he saw was his family turn away and walk into the vastness of purgatory.
(Ooc) so I lied a little. He won't be a giant anymore. Which i was trying to hint at but we all know I'm bad at being sneaky. I said very specifically that the giant is dead. Not Brutus by name. He's not going to have any special powers though. But I will defiantly not bring back frost or them. Because that would be redundant. And I like making people think I'm a bad person. (Ooc) |

Franklin had exited the estate only to see two children, still as death. Cradled in the arms of a much larger corpse. And so he just stood there, staring at his own graveyard. He knew the children were alive, if you could call it that. Their skin turned pale white, and their hair was as silver as snow. Their eyes were black, their breaths were short and distanced by several minutes, there heartbeats even longer. There he stood, still faced, seemingly indifferent. He had grown accustomed to death, this was another sheet of innocents lost at his hands.
He sat beside the giant, speaking to him as if he was also going to die, and he had only a few breaths.
"I'm a horrible liar. I mean, well, not a bad liar. I'm rather good at lying, it's a part of my profession. I mean my lies carry terrible secrets. I lied to those kids, and you too. There is much in my life that I'm not sure if I'm proud of. The Ratt of Information, a name that dies today with you. I haven't lived here as long as you'd think. Not too long before the Elaphastor family. Narrett, Sara, and Aidan. They're special kids, y'know. Very special, part of a long dead race. Skymages, that's what Vergil wanted. Don't quite know how these kids exist, the last of their kin disappeared in the last Era. They live longer than us, they heal fast, they control magicks of the sky. They're similar to another race of mir that exist today, there doesn't seem to be any connection however. I've read that they can fly. But from what we've seen today you could probably come to the conclusion that they're not pure."
"I was born in Diyad, and I've served the king for many years. I operate in the shadows, I do the things that good valiant men cannot. I make it my business to deal in death, deception, conspiracy, and espionage. I've been stationed here for a few years now, every death is on my hands. Several innocents, women and children. Fathers and mothers. Some I killed directly, some were caught in the metaphorical crossfire, implying I never miss a shot with my revolver. I'm a genius, and I'm not afraid to admit it. Don't mistake that for arrogance, or pride, it's the damned truth. I'm also not afraid to admit that the death doesn't phase me one bit. Efficiency is all I care about. I get my job done and I always surpass expectations. Today I completed my mission. I participated in the seedy dealings of Gran Arcadia and the Dorado Syndicate for several years under the guise of ho-hum information broker, and I saw to it that the administration was left decapitated. The arrival of these children and you only made my job easier. The Syndicate was weaker than I thought, everything relied on one person. No one is this town is going to pick up the pieces. So what happens now? Diyad will take action, before long this floating monstrosity will become a province of Diyad once again. There's only a few more independent floating cities left. They'll be far easier to wear down than this. It's dark, sinister work, but even our noble king knows this is necessary, despite how much it may hurt him to allow it."
"I even adapted alkhemy, I weaponized it. I can break down a man's body to Dust with a properly placed bullet. It's that easy for me. Death is in my nature, yet why? Why right now, do I want to die? Why does it ache, Brutus?"
He pauses for a moment, then finally opens his mouth again.
"My kin, my family, we are the shadows, we are the left hand of the King. Appreciate this name giant, none living will ever hear it."
...
...
...
"Voxtrot" -------Several Hours Later------- Lord Thanatos arrived with three teams of six elite Alkhemist Knights. They had flooded in Dorado, seeing the aftermath. Of the bloody battles waged this passed night. Thanatos walked swiftly toward the crater in the ground. By this time only Brutus remained there. He was too heavy to be moved. Franklin, walked swiftly passed him, not making eye contact, almost not recognizing his existence. But as he passed, he whispered something almost silently, "a full report will be delivered soon, m'Lord."
When he arrived at the crater he could not believe what he had saw. His friend lay there dead, Brutus. For a fleeting moment he was frozen, but then he felt something, something far in the abyss. A flame, not extinguished, but dim as an ember. He smiled in relief. His eyes instinctively glowed pink, and this time that other voice spoke. That heavy, suffocating voice.
"I'm no company yet, you have much left."
He will live.
The spry soldier from earlier arrived at his side. It was Lt. Evens. A drop of sweat fell from his hazel brow.
"M'Lord, this city is hell. There is an entire sub district of people dying from some unknown illness. There are men of machine and flesh, and the estate... it's flooded with blood."
"This is more serious than I had first thought. Scrounge up as many men as you can down below. Not too many, the relief efforts in Karthage haven't ceased. Just enough, understood?"
Yes sir, oh and before I go, there are two children, stricken by some terrible trauma. Pale skin and hair, like nothing I've seen."
"Thank you for bringing this to my attention Evens, I'll be sure to check on them." -------- A Couple Hours Later-------- Thanatos had thought nothing of it, two children, likely victims of this mysterious plague. Poor souls, he thought.
He arrived at the central clinic where many of the injured and sick were being treated. Disturbingly, here he felt almost at home. The white, sterile walls became engulfed in a thick black miasma that welcomed him, each curtained room was merely another shadowy hallway with a soul aching to join him in his journey down the twisted corridor. Any doctor that tried to trap his attention found themselves unsuccessful in their hunt.
Finally he arrived at the room with two children, and the shadowy world shattered...

They lay in the same cot, held in their own cold embrace.
Lionus' heart stopped, beside the cot he fell to his knees. His vision blurred and his ears were filled with an inescapable siren. He glanced at the blood on their clothes that had been tossed in a pile in favor, of the white gowns they wore now. He stared at the haunting sanguine stains. He stifled the urge to vomit. In his mind he heard the memories, the screams of a boy, who was once his age. The screams however, were drowned out by the sirens. He looked to the children once more, and did not break his gaze. For hours he must have stared, but for him it was merely a moment. He felt the waves of a roaring ocean beating against his chest. Memories once lost began to flood through his mind with tremendous force. His eyes dilated, until the pink nearly consumed them. The beating in his chest pounded harder and harder, finally forcing him forward. He caught the two children in a tight embrace. Scorching tears shot down his face. He whispered to himself:
"Anastasia, what have I done? I have stared deep into the abyss, and now it stares inside myself, and now I've become..."
When Thanatos, left the clinic, he had come one step closer The Truth.

Knock knock.
"Who's there?" Anarcus was not expecting visitors. The Purifiers' secret hideout in one of the less developed districts of Aethereum's capital still wasn't discovered by the patrolling Wardens. Besides, all his men were already inside, planning for another strike on the Afflicted Ones.
Anarcus stood up from his chair and quickly eyed the room before heading to the door. Five of his comrades gathered around a round table with a map of the city and two candles that lit the room dimly. They all were looking up at the door, displaying barely noticeable apprehension.
He paced towards the entrance and opened a small section of the door. On the other side, two apparently nervous faces stared back at him.
"What do you want?" Anarcus demanded. "This is private property, I'll have you know."
"We're looking for food and shelter," he heard a trembling voice say.
"I could give you food, but can't you create a shelter yourself?"
"Well..." The two pairs of eyes looked down. "Let's just say, we can't."
Anarcus briefly glanced at the other Purifiers and mouthed, This is going to be good. He then opened the door in a grand gesture, and the two Afflicted Ones came in.
One of the Purifiers straightened up when he saw the newcomers. "Um... Anarcus?" he asked quietly while rolling up the map.
Anarcus quickly looked at the nervous diseased and stepped closer to the Purifier. "What is it, Kaelis?"
Kaelis kept whispering. "These are the same people we've tortured on the Harbinger Square a few days ago."
Anarcus's eyes widened, and he whispered back. "When you imbeciles let them go because the Arch-Warden scared you off with his one-man army?"
"Look, I thought you got over that! Yes, we misjudged then, but that's not the point. What do these people want coming to their former tormentors?"
"Maybe they don't know who you are yet. Sometimes physical traumas can detrimentally affect memory capabilities. And if they do, well..." Anarcus's lips formed a cruel sneer before he turned around.
"So, how may we help you two?" he asked the newcomers.
One of the latter smiled. "We just wanted to tell you that the Shadowed One sends his regards."
"The Shadowed One?!..."
"Aha." The second Afflicted One pointed at Anarcus with his left palm. Suddenly, everything inside the Purifier screamed in agony, and he felt an invisible force pull him out of his own skin and mercilessly drag him closer and closer to the dreadful hand until it engulfed him whole and replaced the world with utter darkness. _______________________________
The other Purifiers watched, locked in horror and disbelief, as an ethereal green version of Anarcus exited his suddenly limp body and, followed by unearthly screeches, flew towards the Afflicted One's palm, which sucked him in in an instant.
A moment of horrifying silence dawned on the room, and then someone said in a shaky voice. "I... I thought the Unworthy had no magical abilities...?"
"We are Soulreapers," one of the newly threatening men replied as he looked the Purifiers over. "And on behalf of our Emperor and his Grand Vizier, whom you might know as the Shadowed One, we sentence you to death for treason."
The surprising revelation of their benefactor's identity faded before the shock of seeing the terrifying sentence already carried out on the Purifiers' leader. However, they quickly regained their composure and prepared for the fight, joined by a lot more of their comrades from upstairs.
Seeing lightning bolts starting to cook in their enemies' hands, the Soulreapers chuckled. Then, the one who killed Anarcus earlier extended his left hand again, and the Purifiers recoiled upon watching his face appear again on the surface of the palm. The twisted face screamed once and turned into a large ghostly fireball, which the Soulreaper launched toward a cluster of Purifiers.
The group split to avoid the projectile, but it still struck one of the fleeing Purifiers. Ethereal jade fire immediately began to devour his whole body, and the blood-curling screams soon receded as the body collapsed on the floor. Then, the second Soulreaper motioned at the body, and an orb of the same ghostly energy left its corporeal vessel and, following the commanding hand's motions, flew towards another Purifier, setting him aflame as well.
Some of the Purifiers retaliated by hurling lightning bolts at the attackers. Some bolts collapsed with the Soulreapers' emerald lightning and set off a myriad of mini-explosions, and others were absorbed by protective jade cloaks that enveloped the Soulreapers.
Meanwhile, the soulfires kept spreading. When one Purifier fell, his soul ignited the next one, and the chain reaction quickly forced the enclave's population to dwindle dramatically. They were powerless before this tactic, and soon enough the entire room was ablaze and shrieking in emerald agony. At last, when the floor was filled with lifeless bodies and burned rags, and there were no survivors left, the Soulreapers exited the half-destroyed building without casting more than a quick glance at the horrible scene.

Despite the Purifiers' wishful thinking, the massacre at one of their many hideouts was not a one-time incident. The civil war continued, and this time, the hunters became the hunted, preyed upon by their former victims. All across Aethereum, the Soulreapers mercilessly tracked down and butchered the insurgents in the empire.
"Only about one fifth of the major cities remains with some Purifiers lurking in the under-developed districts," Verephos concluded his report to the Emperor, which he was delivering after another successful raid. "I estimate that we will root out the opposition within this week."
"Excellent work, Verephos," the Emperor nodded and lifted his hand up to the mouth in order to cover the smile that creeped unto his lips. "How has the population reacted to our new forces?"
"Largely positive, milord. In the eyes of the civillians, peace right now is the most important condition to achieve, and that's exactly what the Soulreapers are going to accomplish."
"If only they knew the means..." muttered the Grand Vizier, sitting besides the Emperor's throne and rubbing his chin.
The latter looked at him disapprovingly. "Look, you knew what we signed up for! Wasn't it your idea to align with the goddess, in fact? And now you try to..."
"Don't blame the Vizier." Nak'Sora entered the room unnoticed to all. "These powers that Soulreapers possess can have a disturbing first impression. You'll get used to it."
"I definitely hope so." The Grand Vizier still looked uncomfortable.
"But I didn't come here to comfort you. As a matter of fact, I need to speak privately to the Arch-Warden."
Verephos, startled, replied rather hastily. "Me? Of course, milady." He made a quick bow to his superiors and exited the palace with Nak'Sora.
Outside, she turned to him and whispered, "Verephos, I need to ask you a favor."
"You did a grand favor to my people, and I'd be glad to repay it. What can I help you with?" Verephos inquired, curious how his help could be useful to a god.
"Have you heard of a continent named Mediterra?"
Verephos searched for the name in his memory and replied, "No, milady, I haven't."
"It's the continent where the Ashborn fled after the Hydromancers drove them out of Abismonus. I need you to pick a small team of your best fighters and magi and travel with them to the continent."
"And for what purpose, if I may ask?"
"The Ashborn people's leader, Nexhawk, poses a threat to... my plans and Praecantaria as a whole continent. He gathers an army as we speak and searches for an artifact to pierce the misty veil surrounding this continent. Ultimately, he seeks to conquer your nations and turn you into slaves!"
Verephos squinted and looked into the distance. He remembered Nexhawk as a wise politician and someone who generally sought what's best for his people, not to go out of his way to wage war on other nations. Oh well, Nak'Sora should know what she is talking about. "And you want me to stop him by assassinating or something like that?"
"Not yet," she smiled. "First I'd like you to track and shadow him and his companions. Let me give you this." She reached into an interior pocket of her robe and procured a black orb. "You can use this as a means to communicate with me, as well as distinguish a general direction where to look for Nexhawk. Once you found him, contact me and await further instructions."
Verephos accepted the orb with humility and bowed before mounting his cael'quas, which awaited his master by the Palace's steps. "I will not disappoint you, milady."
"I know you won't," Nak'Sora said as she watched him take off and ascend into the skies above the city and soon disappear as a mole on a blue canvas.

ATTENTION ALL WRITERS
Sandromin and I have been discussing how we're going about continuing the story from here on out. He is reluctant to return to the forum after CCP murdered Dust and a hefty chunk of the forums. I've urged him to continue on in the thread. He insists we continue on in book form. I personally believe that our narrative is best suited by this thread format.
One thing is sure.
WE NEED TO COMMUNICATE BETTER IN ORDER TO GIVE TIMELY RESPONSES
Sandromin and I ask that you share contact information. Preferably e-mail. If you have Steam, that's even better. I want this to continue to its end(which is far ahead of us) and that can't be done when people are taking weeks in between posts.

To those who remain:
I've taken the posts off the forum and have begun to turn them into a Word document, removing all the forum formatting from the raw copy-paste.
Here it is:
http://1drv.ms/1uzJbty
It is view-only to prevent trolls from deleting things. Things I have been doing:
1. Remove the character post info (corp, alliance, likes), remove post links (like post, quote post, etc.) 2. Add character name back into the post 3. Remove posts in the thread that have nothing to do with the story
Things I will do after I finish this stuff
3. Tidy posts (small typos and such. Will NOT change style of writing.)
And finally (this is where I will need to consult with you guys):
5. Will start removing/editing quotes to make them flow more with the story. (ie instead of me quoting Brutus' post with Conyr's response, it will become something like Conyr watched as Brutus blablabla... then his response.) 6. Removing posts that are completely OOC. Will leave them now as they do explain things. This doesn't count lore posts, I will leave those.
If you guys want to help with the initial editing (I can probably work through the first 3 steps at a rate of 100 posts a day), drop me a Steam message at username Mhizzing. I've already added Sandy and Nexhawk I think. If you don't have Steam, GET IT just for this! :D I can give you guys an editable link through that.
Anyway, once I'm done with this I'd like you guys' permission to post it only my blog, just for curious readers. And after that, well, we can continue writing here, through the Word doc, or my blog will become our blog and we can post there! ^_^
Oh and hi.

OOC: And just when I thought this thread was dead, Vyzion saves the day. I'll add you right now(Steam Username: Patterbits). Although I disagreed with Sandromin for a while, it's becoming more and more clear. Iff we want this to continue, it has to transcend the Locker Room(which is already a shell of its former self).
I was originally going to write a long sappy speech here, but I think everyone gets how special this is.

Edit: I don't think that's the right document.

Had to quote this too... short story! How far we've come... an average book has around 64k words and we have about 400k. :D
