Not sure which is quicker, but I've found that sitting at the "mission failed" screen will eventually return you to the warbage, just like it does if you sit too long when looking at the results screen.

Must be a range issue. Was playing Manus Peak earlier today and was defending A with my Thale's (about 200-250 meters from the node) and only noticed cloaked scouts by their shimmer. Definitely didn't highlight for me.
