You do share my taste along with most of my reasonings. I just don't articulate well.
Having read all that - I have to know now if you'll enjoy Spice and Wolf the same way as I have, so much so it's my number 1 all time anime.
It's not emotionally impacting - but you will be impacted.
Also, have you seen Clannad or Anohana?
How about Please Teachers or Twins?
I know you said you don't like the elder animation styles - but they'll surprise you with how timeless it will seem. An example of this is Great Teacher Onizuka - and absolute must watch for anime fans. Or crest of the stars - another must watch for sci-fi/war fans.

So, I decided to stay up all night because I have very early morning battles vs Nyain San
So I watched an anime movie - I tend to never watch any anime movies - they're always rushed and nearly unbearable, Akira being the one of two exceptions. *Luckily the other exception is on CR <3*
But now, there's a third. Wolf Children.
Ugly show considering the date it released, just 2 years ago. It's animation quality reminded me of cheap scenes in FLCL - and that's really saying something. But certain aspects of the animation really drove home expressions and the drama, so I won't knock off too many points for this.
But I tend to look past animation if it holds one element - A damn good TOLD story. The difference of a well told story with a bad plot vs a badly told story with a good plot is a major one for me. And this show holds down both a good told story and a good plot.
However, as much as I want to go on another one of my tangents on how much I liked this show - it irked me, as well.
THIS MOVIE SHOULD OF BEEN A TV SHOW. It would of been damn, damn good. I was invested in every single character enough that I would of been tickled to find OVA's or any sort of continuation.

I have to admit I have not seen many anime movies myself as well. Some FMA movies, Kite Liberator, and the Sword Art Online summary movie are the only ones that come to mind.
Foundation says I have to watch Madoka Rebellion, and I'll get around to it eventually. Maybe when I finish watching Nagi no Asakura and finish re-watching Fate / Zero.
Good luck with your all-nighter, and good luck for your PC. I may pull an all-nighter as well, but for what reason I do not know.

And the Madoka Movie Series is amazing <3
@Cat Do you remember the daughter and her relationship with that kid? That's what I really want more of - and the mother never left the mountain area, so she's close to her son.
There's just so much more that can be done - and I would seriously want the daughter to get her own TV show of how she's adapted being 'special' and the challenges of it all. It was all just so.... interesting.
The only show we have like that is Engaged to the Unidentified - another amazing show <3

I heard you like Plot and Philosophy.
The Monogatari series comes to mind. Start off with Bakamonogatari and work your way from there. I believe the next set in between that (can't remember the prefix of it, has "monogatari" in it though) and then Nisemonogatari. Finally, you'll find the rest of it under "Monogatari" under Crunchyroll. There's more to come (or already come out?) that they will do as well.
Plot is thick. Philosophy is thick. Wordplay abounds and if you aren't bushed up on your Eastern religion studies, this is more than a crash course in it. Animation style is also very unique, as it's done by studio Shaft (same people involved with Madoka, Nisekoi). Highly recommend.

It's not emotionally impacting - but you will be impacted. Wait, what? How did Spice and Wolf become your number 1? Spice and Wolf was great and hits home telling its story but a lackluster Season 2 finale with a "well, maybe we'll do a Season 3" feeling too it really put me off. I still recommend Spice and Wolf to people but only of its unique category of economics that it covers with a nice little romance/companionship story interwoven... but it's by no means the top...
Then again to each their own...
Ruroni Kenshin is my top, mainly because of how surprising the series turned out to be. It starts off as a little action/comedy piece. But eventually, the writing goes deeper and farther than any show I've ever seen. As the show continues, the action scenes become crisper, cleaner, and heavier. The plot goes deeper and character development becomes stronger. And then were are graced with prequels to show the history of Kenshin that takes the series for a deep turn into slice-of-life and drama. Finally, the last OVAs release which tie the prequels and the show together for the best damn example of how to tie-up any loose ends and best damn conclusion that leaves an impact that forges a memory of an unforgettable show, and turns any young boy into a man.
Cowboy Bebop and Great Teacher Onizuka has these traits as well, but what made Kenshin stand out for me was where it started and where it finished. Bebop and Onizuka set the pace and the mood from the get-go whereas Kenshin surpised many as it evolved over time, not in a degrading way like most Shonen anime falls into, but a flourishing one to create one of the most surprising and impactful animes of all time.
It's even more ironic, and yet fitting too, if you were to use an analogy to blacksmithing: Many Shonen animes attempt to forge the best swords; who knew that one of the greatest would come from a reverse-bladed swordsman?
That's my take anyways...

But Roruni Kenshin was destroyed by that very thing - though the exact details elude me so I may need to go re-watch it. But I remember being very unsatisfied with the show 40 episodes in, lol. Imagination is for chapter books - I want to see this progression. The daughter really carried the show in a lot of ways, especially her character development. She goes from this wild child who seemed most likely to go wild - then finds a boy then wants to be more human. While the son is the exact opposite. It has so much potential for more :(

Like shaft, it's an animation company. This ones a bit more known for pure moe, where as Clamp is known for moe + epic moments.
Personally, besides Shaft, my favorite is Key Animation, or w/e they are now. lol

Bakemontagari Niskoi Zetsuba Sensei *This show is NUTS... in a good way lol* and some weird show about a kid who can time travel with some ghost, forgot the name but it's another shaft show that deserves praise. And then there's Ayakawa Under the Bridge I don't think this company has ever done a show that's rated anything but good. Ah! Yes! I did forget to mention the relationships the MC has with each of the characters.
These are some of the most well-developed female characters I know (for once, I mean that in a plot sense, since some of them are underdeveloped? HUEHUEHUE). They go beyond the cardboard cutout stereotypes you generally see in many romance/harem genres. You get the feeling they are no different than real girls: they are cheerful on the outside, but they hold animosities on the inside. They develop friendships with each other, but still hold some jealousy. Again, deep character development.
I will disagree with the "timeless classic" as I would amend that to say "timeless clut classic". The Monogatari series is not for everyone: it goes into a degree of difficulty in understanding Eastern culture, poetry, philosophy, wordplay, etc., that can easily leave a Westerner in the dust. I can't remember sales, but I don't think it was one of the top sellers, even though it did sell well. This is for the expert anime watcher, one who wants to go further into the history of Eastern culture.
"Anything made by Shaft is gold": Well that's a bold statement! I will admit, Shaft picks up some interesting works and does some of the most unique animation work to date. I remember Madoka getting heavily criticized due to some of the things that Shaft had decided to do; many of whom claimed it to be "laziness" or "lackluster". But Shaft has a reasoning behind everything it does and the more you watch the works they do, the more apparent it becomes.
However, I did not enjoy Ayakawa Under the Bridge one bit. It wasn't because it was bad, it wasn't poorly animated, it just wasn't my thing. Like I mentioned before, to each their own. I do wish I liked it though: I wanted to drop it after the first episode and trudged my way through 2 more, but I just couldn't get into it.
As for Zetsuba Sensei: Shaft did that? Welp, time to add to my instant queue.

We definitely have differences of opinion here, the comments you speak about Spice and Wolf are fair enough - Season 3 will come someday! But Roruni Kenshin was destroyed by that very thing - though the exact details elude me so I may need to go re-watch it. But I remember being very unsatisfied with the show 40 episodes in, lol. Hm, I can't seem to remember the ending, good news for me, that means when I re-watch i'll get to enjoy it all over again <3 Have you seen Mayou? I think if we were to make a corp called "Spice and Wolf Season 3" you and I would be the only ones occupying it.
The ending to Kenshin that I'm talking about was the OAV called "Reflection". If anything the ending to the TV series was "acceptable", if I remember correctly, but I can still remember "Reflection" as clear as yesterday, which was about 10+ years ago.
Can't say I've seen Mayou... to quote Cat... Halp?

What marks a show as shaft isn't the plot or complexity *They do tend to have very complex emotionally shows followed by a very talkative plot* but the way everything is both introduced and relayed to you.
It's the camera angles. 100% all about that. You will be seeing up there nose hairs and upside down, the screen will start going crazy randomly, random images thrown at you that can make sense or not - with text that come as fast as they go.
Shaft screams there own style - and I'd never want them to change.
As for Arawakwa - It's a romance/comedy, but it's pretty much all comedy. If you aren't looking for over-the-top fun, look else where. This show and NATSU NO ARASHI are destined to be the most unlike of Shafts work - there comedy is just too eccentric and western based. But I enjoyed them both immensely <3

Come join in the in-game talks sometime in Anime Empire - Spice and Wolf is a beloved show. It's fan are dedicated to it - and luckily for us there's plenty of material to hunt down. The anime covered only 3 out of 11 books of Spice and Wolf <3
And SEASON 3 WILL COME!~ The studio's hinted at it for a while, even out right said with a bit more support they'd be all for it - but Mayou ... also needs another season... just as badly <3 And yes, you do need to go watch this, it's competing with Spice and Wolf for my love.
That poor studio has way too many awesome titles they aren't pushing.

Shaft head tilt - if you don't see at least one, somethings wrong. :D
And I hear Tsubasa Chronicles getting another show later this year, real excited to find out more, maybe a real continuation. Whoever put the original anime together messed up after second season.

Well they made amends there as they released the Tokyo Revelations Arc and brushed off the weird filler that happened in Season 2. Then there was another OAV but I don't think they finished it while the manga did finish (and I read that).
*****SPOILER ALERT***** *****SPOILER ALERT***** *****SPOILER ALERT***** *****SPOILER ALERT***** *****SPOILER ALERT*****
I could barely get my brain wrapped around the whole time-traveling, warped back into the past to save their future selves (or would it be their son and daughter? again so confused) and I got lost in it all. That said I was able to stick with it until the end.
And that amazing reveal that made the title click like the last piece of a jigsaw puzzle, that was very well done.
But I'm really hoping the anime will show me a bit better instead of me having to flip back and forth between pages to figure out what the heck just happened.
Poking around on Anime News Network yields no results of any new titles... You sure it wasn't the Spring Thunder OAVs? Those I have also already seen...
Oh and by the way, looks like we have the final set of Military Girls! First, Strike Witches, then Girls und Panzer, Upotte, Arpeggio of Blue Steel, and finally Kantai Collection is finally airing! You can find the first episode through the usual Googling.
EDIT: Or it's RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME... *facedesk*

In all seriousness, after a day of conversation on this thread I swear my list has doubled length. I might actually have to write it down at this point...... Far as romances go - I haven't even begun to share with you the gems of the genre. Shows like:
http://kissanime.com/Anime/Aishiteruze-Baby - A show about a popular high school kid who has a 6 year old girl *ADORABLE BEYOND BELIIIIIIEF!!~~~* thrust upon him by his family to raise. It's a sincere and fantastic watch, but it's a bit dated animation... and yet, the girls are cuter then most modern ones.
Ah My Goddess - About a guy who has so much unluck, that heaven granted him a wish. They just didn't expect him to wish the goddess be his girlfriend, lol. And the best part is - she actually likes him for who he is - ends up heart warming and full of smiles.
Air and Kannon 2006 - If you watched Clannad or Angel Beats... then welcome to the shows that lead to them. Both romances that will inspire tears. Beautiful animation as well, age is hardly noticeable.
http://kissanime.com/Anime/Ano-Natsu-de-Matteru - girl comes to earth. Guy on earth sees her arrive. Girl lands on guy. Guy wakes up next morning goes to school and finds he has a new class mate - and she's moving in too. Pretty typical plot and setting - but there's nothing typical about the cast.
B Gata H Kei - this is just a good romance/comedy/ecchi. Bout a girl who wants to have lots n lots of sex. But to do it she has to lose her virginity - but she can't just to any guy! So she finds the 'right' guy - you can see where that goes as she finds him episode 1 - and he's a nerd, lol. Good show.
Bakuman - a MUST see for romance lovers. It's about 2 guys getting into the manga business to create an anime - there reasons? One wants to prove something to himself - the other made a promise with a girl who wants to be a VA that he'd make an anime she could be a VA for - and when he does, he'll marry her. I probably don't make it sound great - but it truly is.
http://kissanime.com/Anime/Bokura-ga-Ita - this is as dated as anime comes. It doesn't even bother finishing the drawing - most scenes are left half done. And it gives it such an atmosphere that is PERFECT for a romance setting - and that's what this show is - a very strong romance about a guy who is emotionally ****** up by woman in his past, and a girl whose innocence is actually refreshing.
These are just the shows in the A and B lists. There's still C - Z in the alphabet.
n+ÅS¦¦Gùò GÇ+GÇ+ GùòS¦¦n++ I watch anime for the plot
