The "indefinite delay" doesn't mean "dead" like it might in another context. It simply means the development team isn't going to give a hard date for all the same reasons CCP avoids telling us until a build is through QA. Even if it turns out to be a four or five month delay it is still coming. I didn't claim Star Citizen was ready to launch, what I did say was that it has the architecture to be able to have first person ship piloting along with FPS for boarding fights. That's a HUGE thing that EVE doesn't have.
I've got 67M SP and a lot of time invested in DUST and I'd love to see a port. I would love to see it expand in scope where my favorite pastime of dropship piloting would actually mean something in terms of passenger transport and arial support. From a player perspective that is gold. Unfortunately CCP has to see a valid business case before they take action and I don't know if they can make one. |

It depends on what they want to do with it.
The game has allegedly bad coding and the engine is a customized version of the unreal 3 engine and optimized(barely) for the Ps3 . Many of the original programmers are long gone and so with the knowledge and experience. It would be costly and time consuming to get many people up to speed I would think and then get it ported to a platform that is very different, and the developers might discover issues big or small when porting considering the situation. Also they would have to hire a bunch more people. It would probably cost a lot of money unless they outsource it. |

Skihids wrote:You have to look at the business case for a port. Ask yourself what CCP would expect from its investment.
DUST was supposed to introduce the vast horde of console players to New Eden and to add a new dimension to the EVE universe. The dream was to have DUST players interact with EVE players and to write the lore together.
Right off the bat CCP's bread and butter, the EVE players, were hostile to the idea of their money going to the development of a console game. CCP stuck it out and it seemed like it might actually work for a while. Unfortunately we soon found out that CCP had no experience on either the console or FPS developement. Additionally we found that the PS3 had too many limitations to ever break free of being a small player count lobby shooter.
In addition the basic architecture of EVE and an FPS are incompatable for meaningful realtime interaction. EVE runs on a single shard mainframe in a turn based manner. Each turn is one second for normal play which is fine for a third person game. When the load gets to be too high it goes into "time dialation" where each turn takes longer than one second to process. Having our time scales shift doesn't kill simple interaction like orbital strikes, but it would be a mess if CCP wanted to implement boarding.
So what has changed in three years? CCP has a skeleton crew for a staff. The EVE players are happy to see DUST die so it doesn't interfere with funding for their game and they won't have to share power in New Eden with "console kiddies" (their term, not mine). The PS4 is new, but does even it have the power to achieve the original vision of massive battles over a large map?
What is the point of porting DUST if it is going to remain a lobby shooter isolated from the rest of New Eden? Wasn't it supposed to be "One War"? Wasn't that the whole selling point? It was supposed to expand the universe of New Eden, not just add a disconnected lobby shooter.
So what would a PS4 port bring? It would bring those console players that were the original target, so that's a plus. But would it ever achieve the orginal vision?
How a PC port? It loses out on the huge console population and risks angering a significant portion of the current player base. On the other hand it provides the best opportunity to integrate DUST with the rest of New Eden.
What would it cost? Well, CCP would have to start pretty much from scratch with a new engine. They would have to staff a fairly large development team for a couple years before they had something playable. They would have to convince the EVE players that this was a good use of their money. A PC port would probably have a better chance with that crowd.
What are the risks? Those include failure to build a decent game due to lack of expertise and the current competition in the PC marketplace. CCP has already demonstrated a lack of FPS development skills with the current game. Then there is the competition. PS2 is a favorite of the massive battle crowd and it has a significant head start. Star Citizen, though still in Alpha, promises to be a true "One Universe" game with the same character piloting capitall ships, one man fighters, and fighting hand to hand all in first person. SC has the advantage of being designed from the ground up as a single universe, a huge fan base, a ton of money, a huge skilled development team, and a head start.
If you were CCP and looking at it from a fiscal perspective what would you decide?
I would be transparent with the playerbase. We aren't asking for a port this second. But we would like anything. How much does it cost to port to PS4 vs PC? I'm positive that if it was stated, people wpuld publicly start funding. Hell I'd pledge 100 bucks immediately. What are current roadblocks to such a goal? Lack of people? Then where the hell is the Legion team? Is Legion dead? Are you waiting for something to show that will impress? Has Sony been potentially receptive to a Dust port? Do Eve Players want an FPS, as in is there a market?
Planetside 2 as people have described to me is massive...but not deep or competitive. They may add something like PC, but being able to fit 300+ players on one screen is quite an achievement on the PS4. Headstart? Absolutely. However that gap id only widening. People's PS3s are dying legt and right, including mine as of yesterday, and I am very hardpressed to buy one just for Dust. Anything, even a reason as to why a port isnt a thought atm, be it balance issues or coding, is better than silence. 07

It would be nice to know what CCP is thinking, but we do have some information. Project Legion has been silent since its introduction over a year ago. We would have seen something this last Fanfest if it were still being developed so we can infer that it's dead. Couple that with no sign of hiring the necessary skills and we can infer there are no plans to resurrect it. That eliminates a PC port.
We haven't seen signs of hiring the skills for a PS4 port either. The current DUST team is too small to both update the current game and perform the huge task of a rewrite on a new engine.
Then there is the silence.
That's the worst indicator.
Talk of a PC or PS4 port would provoke a portion of the player base, but it would energize the rest far more. Any hope for the future would be welcome even if it weren't for your favorite platform.
The silence says that they don't have any plans to port. It makes sense to be silent if the alternative is to crush all hope for the future.

I would like to see the "mid" range PC that performs like a ps4 in terms of gaming. I can buy a PS4 for 350Gé¼ on amazon. the gpu is about as powerful as a 270x, thats atleast 150Gé¼, 180Gé¼ if you actually care about your PC and want a good one with better cooling solution. ~150 for CPU and cheap motherboard and you are already at ~300Gé¼ you still need RAM, cooler, case and power supply. your will be at ~450Gé¼ all together. with compromises you could make it for 400Gé¼ but the PC will be ******, loud, get warm and have low ram which wont compare to a PS4 in terms of performance. the PC will also never run at 120W under load like the PS4 does. 120W PS4 vs 350W PC, if you play 5 hours a day, thats 100Gé¼ extra per year on your electricity bill in middle EU. and games will not run as well on your PC as dedicated PS4 games using the PS4 low level API which PS4 exclusive usually do. mantle and directx12 is childs play compared to the low level API that is offered by the PS4. all other games which do not use the low level API will be about equal though. the PLUS the PC has, if you install a free Linux distro, you can use it for work though and that is the only PLUS the mid range PC can score over the PS4. in terms of gaming, ease of maintenance and comfort in relation to cost ps4 wins out every time againts mid range PC. - A mid range CPU will cost around -ú100, - a decent motherboard will cost no more than -ú30, - a mid range GPU can cost anywhere between -ú30 to -ú100, - a basic case can cost around -ú10 - 8gb of some of the best RAM the public can buy is at most -ú50 - a 600W PSU cost me -ú30, a mid range build won't need anything near 600W - a 1TB HDD will cost around -ú50, much more storage than a console. - a DVD drive will cost under -ú10 - a simple mouse and keyboard will cost around -ú5 a good mid range PC will cost at most -ú400, so admittedly it's more expensive than a ps4, however when you can do so much more with a PC in terms of customization as well as just generally being able to do more, it's definitely worth an extra -ú50. Note: I didn't include a monitor or an OS here because PCs can be plugged into a TV instead of a monitor and linux is always an option if you want to be a pleb (windows 7 recommended though)
thx for repeating what I said.
again PS4 can bought for 300-ú your PC costs 100-ú more, has no blu ray player, bad cooling, low frequency ram with not optimal timings (8 GB of best ram does not cost 30-ú lol just shows how uninformed people are), ugly case with bad air flow and consumes 350W while gaming(2,5 times as much as a ps4). beside that, that is not even close to a ps4. and if you want to make it even remotely close to a ps4 you have to go for small form factor which will easily bump the costs by 100 or more.
as said, the only thing your mid range pc has over the PS4 is getting a free linux distro and use it office stuff. which you pay 100-ú more for.
note, I can do office stuff even on a smartphone with a bluetooth mouse and keyboard + connecting it via HDMI dock to a monitor if I want to, I do not need an extra PC for that. I can even use linux on my smartphone by running a VM. works like a charm. I do not need an extra ****** mid range fanblower pc for that stuff. |

The real draw of a PC over a PS4 is that you can spend a bit more and get several times the power, as well as connect any set of gaming peripherals you want: HOTAS, Track IR, Voice Attack, rudder pedals, button panels, multiple monitors, etc.
You are going to spend money on games so it makes sense to have a better experience for each rather than compromise on your platform.
Consoles are a great low cost machine for those unable or unwilling to build a PC. You could attempt to build a PC for PS4 prices, but then you ignore most of the reason to build which is to get a much better machine. |

I use a warthog with pedals on ps4 with warthunder and have headtracking through camera. I use it on a nerdytec couchmaster infront of my huge TV and it works like charm. everything can be used on the ps4 as long as the developers allow it in their game.
point is, a mid range pc, while being to do more, does not compete with ps4. my smartphone can also do office stuff, image editing etc.. I can even run a VM with regular desktop OS on a smartphone and plug in a monitor plus connect mouse and keyboard. I can also run a VM on server in my local network and remote connect the phone to it using the servers superior hardware for video editing or even play games with almost no latency over local network. so if ps4 is obselete then a PC is too, cause my smartphone can already do everything a mid range PC is able to and even more if you take a local server into account.
beside that, a mid range PC that can compete with ps4 in terms of power still costs more and is a loud room heater under load. |

Honestly both games are quite similar (i played dust here on ps3 and planetside still playing on pc). And if i will choose between flat and mediocre and small lobby shooter or pretty good realtime shooter with huge maps, i will go for that second one.
I like dust, but after that years i basicaly stop believe CCP. What i see in PL2 with all optimization and still more and more thingies i will propably stay with it.
I like lore behind dust, but after that years without proper progression (even when CCP stated how dust is moneymaker) i basicaly threw all trust away (and i spent big money in this game).
Right now im more in to PL2 and Survarium.
It was 40k plus, it was 30k plus not it is 20k plus and we will see in winter time.
I like dust but thanks to CCP it will be lost in time.
IF you will ask me what i will want for Ps3/4 i will tell you no dust, no legion ..I WANT MAG, THE ONE AND ONLY MASSIVE MULTIPLAYER GAME ON CONSOLES!!

My PC was just shy of $500 (450Gé¼). I want to say $460, but it has been a while. I can upgrade it with a new GPU, more RAM, or more powerful CPU. If a new bit of cooling tech comes out I can upgrade it if I want to. If you want a new PS4 you will need to buy the newest model. Hell, a new PS4 with a SSD came out recently. Anyone who owns the old PS4 will need to upgrade: another $400 down the crapper.
As for power, I live in TN where power is 10.61 cents per kilowatthour. Some of the cheapest in the country thanks to the hydroelectric power we have here. I'm just fine with my PC's power consumption.

I am glad you are amused
anyway power consumption of a PC adds up here in Austria. playing several hours a day results in almost 100Gé¼ extra per year.
and btw you can exchange the harddrive of the PS4. it is as simple as plug and play, I have a 1 TB hybrid drive installed.
and the PS4 has something that PC does not have. a very optimized low level API but developers are generally to lazy to optimize their games and use it and only a few games run on it. the low level API is what makes the hardware shine. just look at the PS3 and uncharted, killzone or the last of us. those games look great running on hardware from 2005 due to the low level API. directx and mantle is child play in comparison. no PC with hardware from 2005 would be able to run such games that well. |

It always will be because people want Dust to do well. The question is which will it do well best on? PS4, which is where a lot of old vets have gone and not many games could compete with Dust's uniqueness
Or PC: Highly upgradeable so it isn't heldback by console limitations, but has an extremely large competitive area of games?
At this point we shouldn't care. If Dust goes to PS4, it's better than PS3. If Dust goes to PC, it can ported later to PS4 or the PS5 or the Virtuaboy7 or whatever.
It just can't stay on the PS3. We can try and keep it here, but it's a bad idea, and not fair to this gem of a game.

I know the games I have on my PC run well and look great. They maintain 60 FPS where consoles hit 30 - 35 FPS and do well to stay there. I know it doesn't belch hot air like you describe and didn't cost my a fortune as some people would like to believe. I can upgrade it's components when I want to with what brands I like (within compatibility restraints, of course). Many of my PC games have huge modding communities to add in features and content when a game studio has stopped making DLC for them. I can net massive amounts of PC games from digital distributors like Steam and GoG on the cheap.
I feel like I have gotten off track... All that to say I prefer PC gaming. I concede there are certain circumstances where consoles make sense (your power consumption issue is a new one to me and I won't forget it), but overall I feel PC gaming is a better, more consumer-friendly gaming platform.

the better question is, why would you get a bendphone when you can get a shiny Z3 or Z3 compact |

We can all admit that Dust needs to get off the PS3 quick fast and in a hurry. We can all agree CCP needs to start talking to us. What we can't seem to agree upon is where Dust would perform better: PC or PS4.

This. As well as are porting this current iteration pf Dust, then tweaking more on the new system? Or shoukd the game be more polished first..
