I only chose the Angel Beats poster cause thats the only anime i recognised there but still pretty happy with it.

Go watch Gundam Orphan, OPM is cool, but there's no actual story to follow most of the time, it's just moments of bad-assery mixed in with moments of plot development. It's a very comic-book-esqiue story telling, and it's damn good, damn damn good, but it's not the anime I've come to know and love.
Gundam Orphan, is the anime I've come to known and love, and beseech everyone here to give it a shot.
I have 2-3 reviews incoming, just take some time to type up. |

Waiting on S2 Testament uncensored before watching, as well. And Valkyrie or w/e it's called that Funimation picked up, it's worse then queens blade, isn't it? I may just skip it.
other then that this season of anime has been surprisingly good. Originally I called this the worst season, but OPM, Gundam, Bones, The Perfect Stranger, Yuru Yuri S3, Order is a Rabbit S2, and Utawarurumonu changed my mind.
The three action shows, * Wars, Chivalry of a failed knight, and Anti-Magic Academy have ultimately been failures, and almost rip-offs of each other. It's a shame out of 3 attempts at a High school action show, we get another Magic Wars failures.
Chivalry tried to stay interesting by involving a strong love element into the equation, really enticing fans to want to get to know them more as a couple rather then individuals, and that's good, because by themselves they both fail as characters.
* Wars is much move beautifully animated, or high budgeted, and with a more interesting foreshadowing going on to greater things as schools make moves to out-wit one another, but it ultimately dwindles down to a basic hero saves the day formula because no one else can or will for whatever reasons. Thus making every good choice our no-brain hero make seem more heroic then it actually is. But then again, the rest of *Wars side cast is growing rather well, and it could be something better down the line.
But Anti-Magic Academy is just a failure in too many levels to be taken seriously, even though it's backed by some gorgeous animation. But the foundation of the show is built upon the MC's relationship with the rest of the squad, and in almost every one of them there relationship feels so contrived and forced that everything the show does seems invalid for the attempt. The functions of the school weren't explained properly to even explain how inexperienced members can form a squad to function as a unit, and we're supposed to believe a chain of command exist when everything functions like a high school. It's just confusion, from top to to bottom.

Enlightened Cola huh? Hmm.... I swear that name sounds familiar... Oh well, welcome to the thread Enlightened Cola! Always nice to meet new anime fans. I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt Anti-Magic Academy was just... A little off. To me it's basically a pile of clich+¬s, with an MC who's about as interesting as a cracker. Not even a salted one.

All of the shows this seasons are nothing but cliche characters, with the exception of The Perfect Stranger, Bones, and Gundam. It's becoming almost painful these days how predictable behaviors are, or how often times what actually happens is much worse.
The need for a loli in every show, and the lack of any real seriousness. Shows fail to create tension and continues to bring you over a wall in expectations like Gurren Lagean did. A Lul in the Sea, Your Lie In April, Clannad, they didn't use some out there story or setting, but with beautiful visuals and animation and amazing character growth, you get the very essence of what I enjoy in anime.
the recent formula of cute + MC = cha ching is getting old. Most relationships do not work like this, and a clearer line of realism would be appreciated. I'm not saying fantasy is wrong, but to flesh it out more, explain the mechanics behind your magic, science, and cultures. I want to like a show like Strike the Blood, but it gave such a shallow ******* explanation of the world and how it's different that I can't relate to events, and characters are treated similarly. Some of them, anyways.
To Love Ru does a much better job in bringing life to there cast, and it's a stupid as **** show. It can do pretty much whatever it wants because it has a large cast of capable developed characters who are down for insanity, so you're always wondering what's going to happen in the next episode with so many serious characters and all of your understanding of them.
That's a show done right. And anime seems to be forgetting this in favor of forced action scenes and melodrama, using cliched moments instead of being creative.
The Comedy side of anime seems to get this, but the action is falling far behind. And we don't seem to be getting many romances lately......... |

Nemesis is freakin' awesome as a "villain" and the perfect foil for Momo. You'll definitely enjoy episode 6 as Momo's antics lead to a Rito/Mikan bath scene (no Mikan nips, unlike the manga) and you finally get the clear sense that Mikan is jealous of the other girls (particularly Momo) getting all of the attention from Rito.
Can't wait for Burst, either--I'm actually re-watching the first season as I do my exercises. Goal was to be down to 250 by the end of the year and I'm already at 246 after losing three pounds last week. Anime is saving my life
As for Valkyrie...just glance at the fapservice compilations and decide if you want to watch it. I'm definitely going to give a go!

Gekkan Shojo Nozaki-Kun (Monthly Girls Nozaki-Kun) A shoujo comedy about a girl who tries to confess to a mangaka. She totally screws up, and ends up becoming his assistant.
This one was absolutely hilarious. A shoujo about a guy who writes shoujo mangas, means that this anime is basically just a huge parody of the genre. Taking conventional tropes, and turning them on their sides. Honestly, I was skeptical when my brother recommended this one, but I ended up liking it. With a charming cast of characters, very well done art, and an OP that is funkier than any OP should legally be allowed to be, I'd say that this should definitely go on your list of anime to watch if you haven't seen it already.

Watched Freezing recently. The fan service tried so desperately to rope you in, the plot is full of holes the size of large craters, and some of the story just doesn't make sense. Still, I guess it's a decent turn-off-your-brain show. Considering watching the sequel, but only if my friend reminds me.
Non Non Biyori huh? I'll have to look that up then. Seen it a couple doesn't times now and it looked very pleasing on the eyes as well as being slice-of-life type (I think?). If it's comedy as well, I'll definitely love it.
Gotta check out Gundam Orphan too...

Non Non B really isn't all that special, it'll only hook you if the characters do, and these easy going, laid back characters can be quite easy to enjoy. And it helps they're not cliche'd, but instead create there own cliche moments the series suffers from.
You'll eventually get bored of hearing the same joke told a different way, of how country the country is, and it kinda irked me how easy they made life in the country seem, while in contrast Wolf Girl showed how hard it actually is.
But my god is the scenery gorgeous. The use of shadows too, just sublime. Out of the three big moe shows, Order is a Rabbit, Yuru Yuri, and Non non B, NNB is definitely the most visually pleasing.
But it doesn't actually separate itself from the others, it's the same tempo and beat, just different jokes.
Yoru Yuri is the only moe show that takes it to the never level by making slice of life fun.
The other shows just don't inspire anything other then moments of moe. They won't make you laugh, but they will make you smile, big.
Lucky Star has better development then those shows, so that should also say something.
Over-all, NNB - 7.5 OIAR - 8, characters are more interesting and a plot actually develops somewhat. Yuru Yuri - 9 A solid show in many levels, and it actually does have gorgeous animation, especially after season 2. |

Yuru Yuri - 9 A solid show in many levels, and it actually does have gorgeous animation, especially after season 2. Sir I respect your opinion, but you are wrong. With an incredibly unique cast, and an atmosphere that could put you to sleep if you aren't careful I've never been more relaxed than when watching NNB. NNB creates a satisfying comedy, but even more so, a relaxing, and fun show that truly gets you invested in the characters' lives. Not to mention that NNB makes better use of scenery, bgm, and slow pans than practically any other show I've seen. Happiness is what NNB brings, and happiness is what it bestowed upon me.
Is The Order a Rabbit? I feel is pretty similar. A heavier emphasis on the comedy, but the same relaxing setting feel. I love the setting of Usagi, but not as much as NNB. The characters are also infinitely flatter, despite attempts at some real development in the second season. I will say that of the three Usagi has the most genuinely touching moments. NNB has a few, but Yuru Yuri has pretty much none.
Yuru Yuri is simply a laugh riot. Honestly, despite the studio change I feel that the third season is the best of the three seasons because it's put a heavier focus on the relationships between the girls..... Something that both NNB, and Usagi already had down pat. Already just because of that there are more moments in the third season that make you go "D'awwww" than in the entire rest of the series put together. Also, Yuru Yuri is trapped by that clich+¬ school setting. Interestingly enough, Yuru Yuri, and NNB did the same things with their second seasons, which was just repeat the first season. Obviously, I like NNB better, but Yuru Yuri had quite the hilarious wink to it.
Overall? NNB 12/10 Usagi 8/10 Yuru Yuri 9/10
P.S. I hate giving numbers. Those are hardly a real interpretation of my complex opinion, but it's simply a counter to Cola's numbers. Notice that I only changed Non Non Biyori's score.

Kail Mako wrote:and an atmosphere that could put you to sleep if you aren't careful This was kind of the problem, I did fall asleep, lol.
It's one of those shows I couldn't marathon, I had to go watch something else eventually to put some wind back into my sails.
I also didn't particularly like the characters, you got your obnoxious, no talent middle sister who we can only hope maturity helps, her older sister with an identity crisis, which is kinda hilarious sometimes, but it's a way to long on going joke with her and makes nearly all her scenes predictable in outcomes.
Then there's that loli, her quirky, young, and kinda clueless questioning of everything is actually quite adorable, and they try to build her up like the rest of the cast with small side stories showing different sides of the them..
Problem is, these elements being added to the characters only get shown or has meaning in those moments. The cast will reunite, then go back to how they were, all development be damned.
When you're show isn't that funny, relying on relaxing under-tones and moe, it's generally not a good thing that your series inspires sleep and relaxation when it spouts a joke every few moments.
I'm too critical in this department of story telling to ignore how lazy NNB actually is, never daring to take development to the next level and give us an actual story. It's pretty episodic in comparison to Rabbit and YY, and it's strange because both of those shows are way more over the top.
Did I mention how absolutely gorgeous NNB scenery is? |

Re-watch Chiaka Coffin Princess S1 *DUB*:
If I was to get critical on this show it would start to look like I hate it. From the shittiest character creation I have EVER seen, to a incomplete setting, to crappy motivations, and even inconsistent animation, this show has strike after strike against it.
But you know what? I still enjoyed it.
So what the MC is single minded and his sister is one dimensional, so what is Chiaka is a walking doll whose probably hallow inside, and so what the rest of the cast is cut and copy replica's of any other show you could pick up and watch. IT WAS FUN DAMNIT!
And isn't that what's important, sometimes? Every so often, maybe once in a while?
The Dub to this show helps with the fun, but the Sub is infinitely better. And no, it's no longer a thing for Subs to be instantly better, these days Dubs have stepped it up majorly. I can name several shows, recent releases, that sound better in English. Wanna fight bout it? xD
This wasn't one of 'em, though, but it was close. They just didn't change the VA's tone enough, they sounded too alike from other characters in other shows, kept bringing me out of the experience and I fondly remembered them.
But back on story, Chiaka plot is actually pretty solid, it keeps you questioning what's going on, involving you in the story a lot further then you'd imagine from such a retold cast. But it comes together well, with the comedy moments bringing out the intensity of the drama as often as it makes you chuckle, it's just a smooth flowing show.
This may actually be an example of how a good director can take a ****** story and characters and make something good out of it.
I could say so much more, a lot happens in so few episodes, but I'll just stick with the over-all opinion:
Twas fun, twas engaging, twas worth a watch. It's real strength is the mystery element of the show, gaining steam as the questions become more and more epic without changing what the question is. Great development, can't really say much more, lol. |

Shonin Sample - a slice of life, high school romance. The twist? A guy in an all girls school. Why? To help the girls better prepare for life after campus protection.
Does it make sense one guy is burdened with this? Nope.
Do I care?
Nope.
I watched the Dub only so far, and only just for some background noise. It looked cute, had decent looking art, and seemed simple enough to follow.
and it's all that, packaged well enough to grab my attention from my game to watch the show instead. The energy and enuthisasm is infective, and the progression and developments put a huge smile on my face.
I really enjoy this show, not a bad character, and Blondie is rather interesting with how she switches back from girl in love with MC to a possible Yuri.
And the part with the Yuru Yuri manga tickled the hell outta me :D |

A little news;
We've talked about our own forums and site, and it's still going to be some time. Me and a friend recently purchased AnimeGrinder.com, and before we release the forums we wanted to set up the website first.
It'll be a bit basic and ugly at first, but we'll be recording reviews in different formats, official, staff made, or special reviews will be shared on it's own web page, complete with links and possibly even the stream itself.
The more unofficial ones will be found in the forums, where comments and discussions can be more thorough. Of course the website will link back to any amateur reviews.
The site will focus on news and events related to Anime, VN's, LN's, and Manga, and organizing reviews for people to not only find the show they're looking for, but a particular reviewer whose on point with your interest.
In that regard, we'll eventually be designing our own profiles to help
And if John is able or willing, I'd like to include our own chat, complete with video streaming to watch shows together. |

I started Koufuku Graffiti. That preview song.....
If you could choose any manga to get adapted into an anime, which would it be? For me, it'd either be Citrus by Saburo Uta, or Murcielago by Yoshimura Kana. Alternatively, I'd be happy with an adaptation of pretty much any of Kuzushiro's works.
Officially recognized for advancing the science of getting bent.

Just caught episodes 5 & 6 uncensored and damn, with Nemesis they finally have a true adversary for Momo. Their battles for Rito's attention should be epic! 6 episodes out? Guess it's time to give it a look. It's just confusion, from top to to bottom.
that false faces anime has been pretty good. luckily i saw the first series on the funimation app before watching it, so i have a clue as to what is going on

this season has been mostly a watch till later type of season. very few shows make me want to watch on a weekly basis.
shomin sample, uttawanero the false faces( or however that crap is spelled), comet lucifer, and iron blooded orphans, hack a dolls, seem to be the only exceptions the rest, i quickly lost interest in. i will probably go back and watch asterisk war when its final episode airs, who knows, maybe it will be ok. i quickly brushed off gate in the past, only to go back and give it a second look for which i am glad i did. testament of the sister new devil, i have no interest in. i watched the first season, and that anime, seemed to be straight up ****. i dont mind ecchi, but that one crosses the line for me. |

Re-watching Irregular at Magic High School (watched 19 episodes yesterday) and two things still stand out to me about this show:
1. The MC is a certifiable badazz. Form his incredible combat skills to his amazing intellect, he is so awesomely OP that it's amazing the show is able to keep you in suspense at all...and yet, when you combine his qualities with his emotional detachment from everything (aside from his insane dedication to his sister) you end up with a character that you're dying to see go b*lls-out in an actual fight, even though you know he's going to win in the end. Best badazz MC alongside the MC of Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero and Grisaia.
2. This is a harem show...that lacks an actual harem. I'm still amazed at how easily the show introduces potential love interests for the MC and then quietly pairs them off with other characters. My God, girls are actually attracted to more than one guy in the entire school! Shocking! I just love how an emotionally distant/crippled MC is somehow able to serve as the focal point that an impressively large cast of characters revolves around without it feeling as though relationships are being "forced" onto the viewer for the sake of plot points.
Mike Patton is the greatest singer in music. Proof
