For example, I still disagree that the ending is left open; the show answers the most important questions (Mao is not inherently "evil") while also strongly implying the answers to others (things aren't going to get better in the other world even with Mao gone, Emi and Mao do share a bond that will likely lead to romance in the future.) Given the information we're presented with in the show, I think it's fair to say that the immediate future for all involved will be a continuation of a fairly regular human life: Emi is always finding excuses to "monitor" Mao while at the same time openly stating that she doubts he's using his position at work to begin his next conquest; Mao will continue to pursue his climb of the corporate ladder to actually help others (he also openly states his affection for this world and his desire not to see it harmed) and poor Chiho will continue being adorable as Mao doesn't return her affections. Thinking about it further, I think the show is intentionally toying with the idea of a romantic comedy; Mao doesn't really express any sort of interest in romantic relations over the course of the show (despite Chiho's intentions) and you can't really say that his relationship with Emi carries any romantic overtones...and yet, the show goes to great lengths to point out how onlookers all comment about the relationship the two share. I think it's fair to say that the two are inherently drawn to each other (perhaps as a matter of fate, being the Hero and Dark Lord) but there's also something to be said about the fact that the two have essentially had their lives "reset." The show flirts with going deeper into their relationship with the scene you allude to in the video (Emi breaking down in confusion, demanding to know why he's so nice to her here after everything that happened in their world) only to pull back. Though they may not have reached the point of actually forgiving each other by the end of the show, it's quite obvious that there is explicit level of trust between the two and that their relationship will deepen over time. I continue to disagree. I think that Ente Isla is just as, if not more important than every character in the show except for Mao, and Emi. The fact that it really doesn't get it's own closure is a big killer for me. I can live with open endings, but the ending for Devil is a Part Timer was too open.
Also, great review Sota. Again though, I must state my distaste for the rating system. I don't think that a fully formed opinion can be summed up with one stock number. There are too many variables. If you absolutely must give it a numbered review I suggest rating it on a case by case basis, and giving it a whole number at the end. Such as giving it something like: Characters: 9/10 Art: 7/10 Story: 6/10 Sound: 8/10 Overall: 7.5/10

How important is Ente Isla, though? Hell, it's only episode 2 and Emi asks Mao straight-out if he'd be willing to simply stay on Earth and keep living his simple life. Actually, is there a single character from Ente Isla that comes to Earth and expresses a desire to ever go back? Look at Lucifer--he's basically an outcast on Earth and spends his days as a NEET...and in the end, he likens his current situation to that of returning to Heaven. Given the intrigue surrounding the church in the story, I think it's fair to say that the corruption and evils of Enta Isla had far less to do with Mao and his army, and that each character recognizes the fact that they're happier on Earth.

The point isn't that none of the characters wish to return to Ente Isla. The point is that it exists, and gets no closure. It's introduced a plot element, and completely thrown it to the wayside without any consideration. Actually, worse than that. It's introduced us to an entire world, and failed to explore it to a complete, or even satisfying degree. While it may not be overtly relevant to the main characters, it's still important to the viewers.
Not to mention the fact that all forms of trouble happen to come from Ente Isla, which means it's still relevant, and will probably continue to be relevant as the spillover from that world starts to collide with our main characters' lives. That however, is just speculation if it ever got to a second season.
They can't ever completely escape or disregard their past, simply because of who they are.

I am 3 episodes into Code Geass and loving it so far but... It's the only show that isn't on Crunchyroll, Funimation, or Netflix, and that makes it difficult to remember to watch it lol
So I'll get around to it eventually
As for SNAFU, I really don't find the appeal that other people seem to have for it. Maybe it's because of how realistic it is? Most slice of life shows have some unique aspect about them, at least.
If it was actually a romantic comedy like Toradora I'd have more positive things to say about it, but I felt dissatisfied after two seasons of "school life" with a final episode of things finally getting interesting :/

I'd like to give my two cents on Enta Isla, because if you remember I made that a point in the review.
The show goes out of it's way to explain and even flesh out the importance of Enta Isla and it's politics, anything that happens there seems to have a wave or after-effect on the party in the other world.
The show comments on the shakey political structure in such a way to make one believe it's on the verge of going to war between the 4 countries, even though 1 country was never freed from the Demons, or even explained.
And the powers that be there are all looking for a political pawn to set up as a down-fall to cover there own asses in some way, we're given details of how awful life and leaders are in Enta Island - even Mao, having come from that world, thought all humans were simply evil, and had no idea they could be something else.
Enta Isle even sends an angel, one that tried to pull rank on the loli assassin. lol
If they took it out of the show, it would still be the same show, sorta, but there's nothing really going on in our world in the show - it's all happening in Enta Isle. |

Couldn't find anything to watch as I'm waiting for all of the summer's shows to release their uncensored versions, so I decided to go back and re-watch the DxD series. My God, there's so much raw potential there that they could take the story in pretty much any direction; honestly would love to see Issei stumble a bit into the "dark side" as he seeks closure over the whole Yuuma incident.

Can't help it; I found Monster Musume to actually be interesting, whereas in No Game No Life I just sat waiting for something to happen to actually make me care about the characters. It never did...hence, a show wherein I actively supported any and every antagonist, just because I couldn't stand the two.

Aldnoah was added to netflix in Dub, so I'm giving it a third chance hoping the westernization will leave out the epic, major, massive plot holes.
and I just realized the shows religious name.... |

Show still sucks, makes no sense, filled with holes, and lies actively to create an atmosphere that shouldn't exist because it's not true. Mars, fighting each other this whole time? Where? How? Did we not just see a mass communication? People who trying to kill each other for scraps talk?
I feel like this story is lying to me so that it can flip it on it's head later. Bad, bad, bad. |
