I do NOT want to be flaunting my butt whenever I walk around my room or war barge. Hips swaying is normal, but this isn't. Create an alt (caldari and gallente seem to be more susceptible to this animation) and watch her walk around her room. It's not normal and like I said before, the first thing that pops into my head is either a runway model or a mom power walking. Not exactly the impression I want to make as a mercenary. |

that's a really cool website, I'm going to keep messing around with it. but I think it's important to note that the walking on the sliders at each ends are exactly that: extremes on a spectrum. People walk in many different ways and the vast majority of people walk somewhere in between and it is really rare to find people on the extremes. I don't know any guys that walk the way the figure does when the slider is all the way to the left. That also seems strange to me.
I don't want a manly walk, but I don't want an extremely exaggerated one either. You can have a sexy walk about 3/4 of the way to the right and that is what it used to be. I think it's cool that a woman can look sexy, and they should look sexy in a video game because video games are wish-fulfillment. But when CCP tries hard to create a gritty, realistic sci-fi epic setting with mercenaries and clones dying left and right, seeing such an exaggerated walk takes you out of it. It seems like a caricature because everything else, the art direction, the world setting, is at odds with it.
Sorry to make such a huge deal about this, I really didn't want to and when I started the thread I didn't think there would be so many replies but I really like Dust 514, and well, this was something I didn't like. Sorry if I made anyone upset. |

Sorry if I made anyone upset. The funny thing is that the way people walk is influenced by many factors and are not universal across gender, culture, size or ageGǪ so it is annoying the way a stereotype can pop up in a video game and change the experience for some people. Also that site is neat, but does not account for so many variables, part of our motion is dictated by biology, emotional state, but also social influences on what is an acceptable way to move within our respective culture, so it is overlooking that variable. Personally I am glad that you brought it up, and that you expressed your feelings about this mechanic, in a very respectful way. Also gives the opportunity to bring up more MMO goodness, like different animation options for charactersGǪ ones we can chose to give our mercs a bit more individuality.

You do realize that we're still inside the Eve universe right? our mercs are disposable clones of a main clone, just like the Eve pilots, the mercs have a life outside the battlefield so it's almost a fact to think that the female mercs are more feminines in their "real lifes"

Its dependent on waist to hip ratio, a larger pelvis means the center of mass is lower with those with lower waist to hip ratios. So if the female is a literal stick her hips won't move, if she has shape the hip movement will be more pronounced (and I apologize if your linked already explained this)
Keeping the animation in or not is small but if it protects CCP from litigation or claims from sexism, then that's less stress down the road. But what I don't understand is why people aren't up in arms about the chest plates considering that any amount of armor usually undefines the area (BBC soldier article),

Anyways, I've kept on messing around with http://www.biomotionlab.ca/Demos/BMLwalker.html and think it would be cool if there was a more robust character creation that gave us the option to change our walking animations. That way those who want huge swaying hips can do so and those who want more modest walking can choose that as well. ^_^
Of course I understand that this isn't a priority with the developers. There are more important things like weapon balance, fixing glitches, all racial variants of suits and equipment etc. and I would prefer that over more character creation options. But it may be nice if later on down the road this was considered (maybe a year or two)? |

Women do not walk that way unless they are modeling a dress down a runway or happen to be moms "power walking." Make female clones walk normal!! that depends actually t be realistic you just about have to sway your hips to walk in any form of heel..so if you look at the shoes your female suit is wearing you can see they're all wearing heels..not thats its remotely battle practical..but i mean..i dont honestly think i ever see female gaming characters not in heels. normally any girl wearing heels is going to have some sway because thats how you walk in heels..the question is is the sway of female characters slight and realistic to them just wearing heels ..or can we call ccp a bunch of nerdy horny pimply boyz for turning female characters ino street walkers in new eden |

I'm sorry. I really am. Looking back on this thread I regret opening it because I feel like there's a lot of hostility in some of the replies. I should have opening the thread while choosing my words more carefully or not at all.
I would not have been bothered by the new walking animation if the animation was the same from the beginning. But it was changed to a more modest walk, so when it was reverted (as some say to the "old" walk) the change became very noticeable and that much more jarring.
I have no problems with the suits accentuating the female figure, I kind of like it in a future-spacey kind of way. The Caldari medium does this and the Gallante suits really do this and I like it. Heck, I play mostly a Dragonfly Scout (despite Scouts doing poorly right now) because I think it DOES look sexy.
But if, let's say, the suits didn't reflect this, if they were more egalitarian and androgynous at the beginning in beta up to now, and then one day you realize that "hey! this has been changed to a skin tight suit over night!" then it would be very noticeable and people would get upset. This is how I felt about the walking animation. Not that I was upset to the point of crying sexism but it did feel like a step backwards for CCP. If CCP wants to keep this new animation then I will get used to it, I like Dust enough to deal with it.
Again, had the animation been like this from the beginning I would not have said anything because that is how the game goes. Like Bayonetta for example, I don't mind playing that game at all because Bayonetta is like that from the beginning. I think she's cool and pretty BA. She's a caricature but that's just who she is and I don't see sexism in her because that's how she was developed from the beginning (albeit the game is kind of sexist).
Anyways, I'm sorry for getting people upset and I guess it's time for me to take a break from the forums for awhile. I really don't want to be known as the one who started "that" argument, so again, I apologize. and, well, I guess I'll just play the game and shut up about it. Sorry again to everyone. |

lol, don't take the comments your getting so hard, its a gaming forum after all so expect some trolling considering the topic, this doesn't effect base gameplay, so its not a life or death scenario, its entirely cosmetic, in fact its one that I did not even notice till you pointed it out, so kudos on that.
People will agree or disagree with the topic or talk about reality v fiction aspects on the topic, you didn't say anything wrong or that wasn't said before, which is why they changed it to begin with.
Just take the comments in stride

But it was like that from the beginning, and then it changed because threads like this one started popping up. We here are in a situation that you just described, someone came in and demanded "changes!".
And because of the current socially accepted bias in the gaming industry on feminine features in female characters somehow representing sexism, CCP had to cave in, and remove the walk from the game to avoid unnessesary sh!tstorms from the SJW crowd ensuing in bad press. |

Many of us - male and female - DO have high heels on.
Make the walk based on your Dropsuit. Flat boots have a more "modest" or "manly" walk, and the high heels on Gallente suits give you a bit of hip sway.
And while yes, there should be minor differences between genders, male and female walking in heels isn't that different. |

I know a few girls who walk like this normally and actually commented on the 'old stiff walk' as unnatural and Unattractive - very toned down manly wanna be walk. They look at it now and saw it has a nice appeal to it. Very Lara Croft meets counter strike.

Lol.
People chuck that word around too freely even though there are clear differences based on hormones and how they affect our psyche, physique and capabilities in certain areas.
Neither is better than each other, males and females do excel at different things.
A very good and simple example is sport, would you think it fair to mix up sport so males and females compete side by side?
Try watching the females football world cup ( soccer) and tell me they are as good as men, they have the same intense training.
Sexist? Certainly not, its reality.
Now to say that my gf belongs in the kitchen, should clean up and forever cook my dinner, that's sexist.

Try watching the females football world cup ( soccer) and tell me they are as good as men, they have the same intense training.
Sexist? Certainly not, its reality. So what you're saying is that, BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF TRAINING, female sports teams don't perform on the level of male teams?
And that somehow proves... what, exactly?
Women's sports, particularly the women's teams in traditionally male-oriented sports, are under-funded. As such, the sportswomen involved can't live as sporting professionals without a second job. Because of that lack of freedom to live a permanent training regimen like the men experience, they are often less skilled and less physically fit.
Ever watched a men's Netball game? The difference looking from men's netball to women's is similar to your example, though not as extreme. There's a tendency for male netball players to perform on a less competitive level from the female players, because the male side of that sport isn't funded as well, isn't as popular, and doesn't attract as many highly-skilled athletes of that gender. Why? Because we still have long-running stereotypes associating some sports with men, and others with women.
If you put two teams into a competitive sport, regardless of gender, the better-trained team will ALWAYS have the advantage. A men's Netball team usually loses to women because the men don't have as strict training, or as much experience as the women. A men's soccer team usually wins against women because they have the better training and more experience with the sport than the women. Neither of those observable facts proves that either gender is naturally better at sports, and claiming so is sexism through ignorance.
A typical female body is smaller than a male. Women are, as a general rule, faster and more flexible than EQUALLY FIT males, but the man will have a greater amount of direct strength, and a lower centre of gravity, which gives an advantage in many scenarios. For most team sports, a mixed male AND female team would actually be ideal, because there are certain roles in most team sports which suit each gender. |

For those delusional social justice warriors who think women can compete at the level a man can, here's a fun little story about the two most dominant female athletes ever facing off against a man
"During the 1998 Australian Open, sisters Serena and Venus Williams boasted that they could beat any man ranked outside the world's top 200. The challenge was accepted by Karsten Braasch, a German player ranked No 203 (his highest ranking was No 38). Before the matches, Braasch played a round of golf in the morning, drank a couple of beers, smoked a few cigarettes, and then played the Williams sisters for a set each, one after the other. He defeated Serena, 6-1, and Venus, 6-2. Serena said afterwards "I didn't know it would be that hard. I hit shots that would have been winners on the women's tour and he got to them easily." Braasch said afterwards, "500 and above, no chance". He added that he had played like someone ranked 600th in order to keep the game "fun"

Nice try, tumblr kiddies. Using an example of a sport where balance (men have the advantage due to typically lower centre of gravity) and strength (men have the advantage here too) is a nice try.
Even better when a large part of the argument against male dominance had been focused more on team sports and you deliberately chose an individual sport to "counter" the claims.

They always matter, but in many sports, there are OTHER factors that matter MORE, and particularly there are other factors that matter more for CERTAIN ROLES IN A TEAM.
And your new example is disregarding the entire argument I made in the first "social justice warrior" post that I made.
A huge part of the problem is the social conventions that make sport a less viable avenue for a woman to base her life around. |

I don't see why there is even a topic on this. How can a simple walk offend someone.
I don't want to be "That GUY" but in a society where everything is hypersexualized (look at all the other female characters in other games barely wearing any clothes), I think a "WALK" should be the least of peoples worries.
I don't know why it got back in but I really don't care for CCP wasting time in something like this in the first place. Why it got put back in is beyond me and if they fixed that problem before, and knew it was a problem, then they shouldn't have spent the time to put back in.
If your a women and are offended by that walk, then you should also be offended by everything else that's inside the gaming industry that's mainly catered to a male audience. You should be offended by most of the things you see in TV on the internet and on the street for that matter.
SO please; I understand that you don't like it. I understand that you feel uncomfortable by it. I agree that if it was a problem at all it should have stayed out of the game but I think, with some major balance issues, this is not what CCP should be spending their time on.
So I agree that this should not have made it back into the game if it was a problem but also; I have to recognize that complaints of a higher priority from the animation department have been shot down simply because of time constraints.

Sorry again to everyone. your one of those people who don't like conflicts aren't you? don't show weakness these people will eat u alive for it. OM NOM NOM
@Lucrezia That is just the thing though, it was like that from the start until someone got all up in arms about it. I don't see it as being sexist, I see it as being a simple difference that should exist.

Priorities, man.
At least threads like these get a dev response (albeit not the correct one IMO). The devs themselves remain mum with respect to the glaring problems of the game that need their attention.

The devs seem more opt to quickly correct the female mercs' hip sway than add new game modes or racial dropsuits. We are just driven to discuss was the devs are willing to talk to us about.
Kind of sad really...

its probably some fat ugly troll or a dude pretending to be an offended chick. Even if it wasn't the case, that's my initial impression and I don't care enough to change it.
to the op, does it really matter. I think you just want attention. We are not even in the war barge most matches. Stop ruining other peoples fun. Really does how women are perceived in games bother you? Maybe developers should design games with overweight sweaty bearded hogs. Perhaps that would make you feel more comfortable |

The differences hormones play on our psyche and physique are undeniable, its what makes us male and female.

Yes the developers have been quoted saying they removed warbarge time from normal public matches. Something along the lines that they noticed they spent a lot of time on it when playing in the office with each other. |

Nah he walks like that because his skin tight suit and when you build muscle it does accentuate the way you walk.
After iv worked out and my arms, chest and back are tight as fk I walk like that, it can't be helped but our mercs are in skin tight suits so they are like that constantly.
Iv seriously over done it before and I was walking like I thought I was the ultimate bad ass but it was just that my muscles were tight as **** and basically stuck rigid and hurt like absolute fk to try and stretch which is basically impossible at that point.

Ok, since we are talking about figments that don't matter to this game or these forums... I have to say that you are both wrong.
Assuming the following:
If you play Assault, then you are a fighter If you play Logi, then you are a priest If you play a Scout, then you are a rogue If you play a Heavy/Commando, then you are a paladin/ranger If you play an EVE Pilot, then you area wizard
Using those definitions, then you need the following for each level:
FIGHTER ======= Level / Exp 1 / 0 2 / 2,000 3 / 4,000 4 / 8,000 5 / 16,000 6 / 32,000 7 / 64,000 8 / 125,000 9 / 250,000 10 / 500,000
PRIEST ====== Level / Exp 1 / 0 2 / 1,500 3 / 3,000 4 / 6,000 5 / 13,000 6 / 27,500 7 / 55,000 8 / 110,000 9 / 225,000 10 / 450,000
ROGUE ====== Level / Exp 1 / 0 2 / 1,250 3 / 2,500 4 / 5,000 5 / 10,000 6 / 20,000 7 / 40,000 8 / 70,000 9 / 110,000 10 / 160,000
PALADIN/RANGER =============== Level / Exp 1 / 0 2 / 2,250 3 / 4,500 4 / 9,000 5 / 18,000 6 / 36,000 7 / 75,000 8 / 150,000 9 / 300,000 10 / 600,000
WIZARD ====== Level / Exp 1 / 0 2 / 2,500 3 / 5,000 4 / 10,000 5 / 20,000 6 / 40,000 7 / 60,000 8 / 90,000 9 / 135,000 10 / 250,000
I believe these are the actual tables that you guys are looking for and this is an accurate translation as Paladins do wear the most armor like heavys do and Ranger wield two swords like commandos do. Not to mention that logi's revive and heal like Priests do, while Rogues are just plain nuisances like the scouts are.
TL;DR - Take your D&D asses out of here you stupid kids!

My girlfriend does it....she swings her hips like a stripper when she walks. She has no idea and I know she doesn't do it on purpose but the sway back and forth is unmistakable haha

Nice try, yourself. LMAO name one sport where balance and strength doesn't matter? Football? wrong Baseball? wrong Basketball? wrong Soccer? wrong Hockey? wrong Balance and strength are integral parts of every single sport in existence, nice try social justice kiddo A female goalie once tried to make the NHL leafs' squad. This is a conversation that has come up multiple times (during the original hip sway round, during the bust size reduction, and again now) and it generally plays out the same way. People post preferences on different sides, sexist ***** start having their own tangent arguments, and sane people slowly resolve on the best solution being let's just make it a customization option people can choose.
When a player plays a game and builds an avatar they are choosing the person they want to be or the character they want to roleplay. Different people want to be different things; therefore the more options the better.
Animation choices are nice. Model choices are nice. Voice choices are nice.
So on this issue, let's make it an in-game option. (And give us a middle-ground choice too; a lot of people are requesting it.)
On a related note: CCP, what's the status of CARBON integration in Dust? When do we get to actually build our avatars like in EVE? I really want to be a person in this game, not Gallente Scout Robot #43. :\
Oh, also to the OP, don't ever hold your tongue on issues that are important to you for fear they may upset some people. Doing so kills reasoned discussion in society, and slowly chisels away at your own happiness. Also, if you say something that is incapable of upsetting anybody, you probably said nothing. |

Couldn't agree more, but I've lost all hope of getting even a simplified version of EVE's character creator; or at the very least, I have no hope of it happening in a reasonable (within the next year) amount of time.
The main reason I can't care about Dust as much as EVE is that I don't even have a damn face, much less a customized body. Second reason is total lack of content besides PVP combat.
Anyway, I think the arm movement is a little too much with this "new" animation. The hip sway is fine, though; I don't like walking as if I'm a truckstop tranny. So reduce arm swinging but leave the hips; because hips don't lie (I didn't bother to check if anyone's used that already in this thread; I should be shot for saying it either way).

Want to walk proper, educated, to roam with the cultured class of New Eden? Simply select the "formal" option in your soldiers menu screen and set the bar of standards for the upper mercenary.

Yeah, there's so many cool tools in EVE, I wonder at how hard it is to copy them straight over to Dust. Avatar creation; Corp UI; heck I would love to see the EVE 3D galaxy-map up somewhere, not as user friendly as the Dust one, but so much more immersive!

So yeah, no Carbon, ever. Yeeaahh. Yeah, that's true, I know. But with modification (sometimes minor, sometimes extensive) code can be moved from one engine to another. Somethings that were originally in CARBON-Dust are in UE3-Dust (connection to Tranquility being the big one). I'm really curious how feasible it is to hope that we'll ever get to see some of the high-profile CARBON features CCP was showing off a couple years ago. |

Sorry, think I got a little of the thread's topic.
Sadly, the kind of game modes you want (and I would want) will only be seen if EA or Activision buys CCP. On one hand, I love the unique spin small developers can give games, sort of like the old days (early 90s) when games had so much more character than they have now; on the other hand, having a small staff and budget means that features either take really long to implement, or never happen at all.
New Eden could easily rival the Star Wars universe, or at the least, the Mass Effect universe, if enough money was behind it. As things stand now though, I'll just have to fill in all the lore gaps and unused potential with fanfiction that I write in my mind while I'm mining plagioclase.
By the way, in mentioning Star Wars, I'm not saying it's the be-all-end-all for sci-fi settings; just that it's a large and easily recognized setting.

EVE needs a lot more lore before it could compete with any well-established sci-fi setting. It's got the foundation and maybe two walls so far. The best and easiest thing to do is rip off bits from other settings. Terminator themes could be used in the context of Gallente drone/AI research, for example. The only thing New Eden's missing, are aliens; and given how aliens are handled in most sci-fi (as in, excessively humanoid in appearance while mirroring cultures from Earth so as to be relatable), I can live without them. |

The way CCP's going, I wouldn't be surprised if we had both interaction with stations and capitol ships sometime in the next three years.
But yeah, for walking through living cities though, or anything else massively asset based, under a traditional development model CCP would need about $100mill.
But, what if CCP didn't use a WOW or AAA console development model (give 300 developers $80mill and 3 years), but instead made the the asset content in the same way Second Life or Minecraft does: through player action.
EVE is already all about players creating the content; thing though is the content is immaterial; as in social ties (These are the people I love and these are the people I hate!) or social infrastructure (These are the people I trust to mine so we can go fight the people we hate!). But what if CCP had 10 developers work for a year to make the tools so players could build asset based content? Instead of getting my ISK from mining, I'm getting my ISK from designing the in-game model for an Amarr cathedral and selling the BPC of it on the market. A player who's getting her ISK as the Praetor of a district on Amarr Prime likes it, buys it and has it built it in her city; and the New Eden is one asset richer.
I'm not yet ready to give up the dream game CCP teases in their FMV trailers. The scenario though where I quit the lobby shooter, and come back in a few years when that dream game is done is still on the table. :\ |

I can see this working with small-scale games like Shadowrun Returns or Dota2, but I'm less hopeful for the concept on a galactic size. I agree that something unorthodox like this is the only plausible way it could happen though; CCP needs to get creative. I would say they could even do the same with World of Darkness, but...

They're all good. Just pick the one you're in the mood for. :)

Anyway, Dune sounds better than the others, going by your synopses. If we could just toss some Battletech/Robotech in here, I'd be set.

If we'd ever get mechs... no, I shouldn't even think of it. Maps would have to be larger for starters.
But imagine doing death-from-above jumps on infantry or tanks, or picking up a soldier and throwing him at his squad, or crushing his suit until his innards oozed forth like marinara from a ruptured Hot Pocket.
Oh, be still my heart.
Now Warhammer... is that the one with orcs with inexplicably British accents, and Space Marines and all that? What I've listed is the extent of my knowledge of that setting.
But yes, everything is a ripoff of something else. The only question is how well the imitation is executed.

Oh, be still my heart. Now Warhammer... is that the one with orcs with inexplicably British accents, and Space Marines and all that? What I've listed is the extent of my knowledge of that setting. But yes, everything is a ripoff of something else. The only question is how well the imitation is executed. I also recall talk of Heavy Assault Aircraft that would fly over the battlefield and drop multiple players in mechs into the fray. Sooo,... 1.8? 1.9?
Warhammer has this thing where FTL space travel requires entering a hell dimension and traveling through that before entering real space again. So any sci-fi 'verse that has an element of horror to it (DOOM, Alien, Event Horizon,...) or requires entering a different space-time to enable FTL (Star Wars, Andromeda,...) ends up jiving really nicely with Warhammer fiction. Throw in the fantasy races and the vast span of time in it and Warhammer has this odd ability to encompass many different settings. |

I'm going to chalk up talk of mechs to CCP's history of seemingly having more concept artists than programmers. If they wanted Dust to stand out from common shooters though, mechs would be the way to go about it. Mech/tank/dropship/infantry would be an unbeatable combination for novelty.
As for Warhammer, I think I'm starting to get the point now. When you get into timelines that last tens of thousands of years it's easy to imagine that virtually any setting could simply be from a forgotten time or part of space.
Which makes you wonder why New Eden only has barely 5 factions left...
I've always wondered where the British went in New Eden. No one has what sounds like an English or American name. Logically you'd assume America had one of the world's largest space programs before the wormhole collapsed, so our settlers would likely be numerous and therefore should have a greater chance of surviving the cataclysm.
Instead of, you know, the French and the Finns eventually creating new space empires. |

I always had a theory that the Andorrans were Caldari, Luxembourg was Minmatar, and the Vatican Amarr. Seems to make sense to me. |

I'd say Moldova or Lichtenstein are much more Matari by nature, than Luxembourg.
I mean, it's so obvious. |

Remember the New Edens were cutoff from the rest of humanity. So maybe the Anglos are else where... Or the Jovians.
Turrent - the sound a tankers pants makes when he finds out the four swarm militia doing squats around him aren't AFK.

Right, could have died off at some point. I find it funny that some of the ancient tech in EVE sounds like Nahuatl or something.
Given the expanse of time from the collapse to the rebuilding of civilization, it's far more likely that there'd be no recognizable traces of Earth language or ethnicity, but I understand why the decision was made to have the new civilizations somewhat analogous to what we already know.

OK, I have to say about the origins:
Caldari are descended from the Japanese.
Gallente are descended from the French.
Matari are descended from several African tribes and countries.
And Amarr... are Italian?

Thats exactly the problem, they couldnt salvage or convert anything at all. Every advance in the Carbon build has been lost because its as incompatible with UE3 as can be.
Years down the drain due to a corporate decision. |
