EvE's system would work too. Eve has larger fleet sizes then MAG. 256 per fleet with 31 leader slots. If the player list showed what channel people where on, and game defaulted to voice on it would help.

The damage does falloff gradually after the effective range, till it vanishes at maximum. Tracking arcs or adjusting accuracy for all the shots of a hmg or smg would use a lot of system resources up, this takes them away from somewhere else.
