Nurarihyon no Mago (Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan)
7/10
Supernatural/Action/Comedy
Plot: Rikuo is a typical 13 year-old boy that enjoys spending time with his friends in school. Of course, he also enjoys spending time with his demon friends that make up his household! Being part demon, Rikuo is the heir apparent to command a force of 10,000 demons once his grandfather retires as Supreme Commander...but Rikuo would much rather live a normal everyday life as a human, a preference that doesn't sit well with the other powerful members of the Nura clan. Unfortunately for Rikuo, his carefree life during the daytime is turned upside down whenever night falls, as the demon part of his existence comes out makes it known that he will be the one to succeed his grandfather. How long can Rikuo keep his human friends in the dark about who he really is, and how long can he avoid the turmoil of demon politics?
Theme: Friendship is magic.
The show starts off slow, but I persevered as a favor to SoTa. Have to say that I came away from the show relatively pleased; the comedic focus of the first three episodes or so (dealing with Rikuo's interactions with his human friends) transitions smoothly into the drama and subterfuge surrounding the leadership of the Nura clan, followed thereafter by the battles that must be fought to protect those that Rikuo cares about.
I was initially put off by Rikuo as an MC primarily due to his age and the impression that he was going to play the "fish out of water" role over the course of the show. I'm happy to say that Rikuo quickly grows on the viewer in much the same way that he grows as a person; his struggle for identity is at the heart of the show and it's entertaining to watch him develop emotionally. He isn't the clich+¬d "I'll do anything I can to help others 'cuz I'm a good guy" MC trope and struggles with the weight of his decisions: he is genuinely afraid of taking on the responsibility of leading his clan and lacks the confidence to assert himself in front of those that are relying upon his leadership. However, he is able to come to terms with his position in life as he gradually accepts the demonic side of his existence, while at the same time emphasizing his "human" nature and desire to help others.
The reason Rikuo is able to develop so much is the strong cast of characters surrounding him, be they human or demon. Keeping with the dual nature of the show, Rikuo finds himself garnering the affections of both a demon and human. In a clever twist, the human character appears to be drawn more to his demonic side, whereas the demon is rather fond of his human side. Though the show never goes so far as to really imply a romantic relationship developing, it is humorous to watch as Tsurara (best character) and Kana develop a rivalry when it comes to getting Rikuo's attention.
Another strong feature of the show is the amount of intrigue that surrounds life in the Nura clan. Internal conflicts gradually give way to the major story arch that comprises much of the second half of the show, wherein a rival demon clan sets their sights on overthrowing the Nura.
Animation is weird. The various members of the Nura clan are all interesting to look at (and are based on Japanese mythology) while many of the human characters (particularly the girls) look strange. Kejoro, Tsurara and Kana are the only attractive characters. Music was fairly standard, though the original ending theme (first half of the show) is a highlight.
Verdict: Slow to build up steam but becomes enjoyable once the intrigue surrounding the Nura clan really comes into play. Definitely watchable.

Miyuki-Chan in Wonderland:
I love anime. I love Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. This is gonna be fun. Wait, it turns all of the characters into girls who want to have their way with Alice (Miyuki)? This is going to be a lot of fun. Though just two OVAs, I did enjoy myself. The art clearly shows how old it is, but well, it's Alice in Wonderland. Hard to screw up that formula. Especially, since this follow the story pretty closely. The second OVA is Miyuki-Chan in Mirrorland, and that one was even more fun.
The characters have zero depth. The plot is pretty straightforward. The animation, and art is dated, BUT that music though. Through almost the entire thing there's background music that just makes the whole thing really funny. I would definitely suggest Miyuki-Chan in Wonderland if you have 25 minutes to spare.

Hmm...if you're going with strong as in "willing to face their fears" then I'd go with Yura and Kana; though Yura is willing to fight the demons, by the end of the show the two reach a point where they're able to accept the fact that not all demons are bad. That said, the human characters are deliberately kept to the sidelines as a means of forcing Rukio's growth as a leader.

Like I said, find a format that works for you. Particularly if you're using rough drafts as a brain storming session--just make a generic template in a word document that covers the topics you want to discuss, then add the ideas you want to discuss under each topic without worrying about sentence structure/etc.
For example, for Nura you may have a topic for the discussion of animation: you could note down monster appearance, human appearance, usage of CG in some scenes, etc. and then, once you're satisfied with the amount of topics you want to discuss you can flesh out your thoughts in your rough draft.
Side question--does the animation style suddenly change for the final four episodes or so? As in the characters taking on a "cell-shaded" look with dark black outlines?

Nura question/discussion: Does the age of the characters help or hurt the show? In my opinion, having the characters be 13 is just too young; first off, it severely hurts the romantic side of the show as you can't really believe that a serious pairing is going to occur in the near future. This is a shame as one of the best parts of the show was the growing rivalry between Tsurara and Kana. Secondly, it's to hard to suspend your disbelief enough to think that a 7th-grader would really be able to recognize and come to terms with his place in the world at such a young age.
Honestly, if they had made the characters two or three years older--wherein they're rapidly approaching becoming actual adults--it would have made things much easier to accept.
Side question--having watched the OVAs, am I the only one getting a sense of dread that Tsurara isn't going to find a happy ending, just like her mother?

And this post though, the show says it itself: You're an adult at 13 in the Yokai world.
How well he's adapting is indeed strange, but it's answerable because his Yokai half seems to have his own will and understanding, and through him he gets most of his growth. |

When I say iron-out am I supposed to rewrite it entirely, or just point the flaws? Because tbh, you make a lot of errors with grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. If I rewrote it entirely it might be easier to follow. I'm not sure what I should do.

The Yokai are beautiful. Their designs range from flowery to adorable to creepy, but theyGÇÖre all incredibly well detailed, especially considering how flat the human designs are, with small eyes and unattractive features.
The exception is the romantic interest, Kana. Unlike the rest of the human cast, her design obviously had more thought put into it, probably to contrast her from the other humans and lift her value in the show. As the show progresses, theyGÇÖll single her out, being interested in our MC in his yokai form, without knowing who he really is, and slowly integrate her into the Yokai side, building upon her relationship with the MC.
Kail, in the review I moved these two paragraphs down, so when it goes to where the plot stumbles, it flows more fluently from plot talks, to character design. |

Tsurara = best character.
Too bad things will likely go for her the same way they did for her mother...
Actually gave up on the second season after five episodes as it just seemed too repetitive; much of those focused on Rikuo's grandfather and the formation of the Nura clan...but the three leader's of the Nura clan are all pretty much indistinguishable in terms of appearance and power. Also thrown off by how characters age--or don't--in the show. In the OVA, for example, we see Tsurara join up with Rikuo's father as a young child, while the rest of Rikuo's supporting cast don't look much different as compared to now. Yet by the start of the show she looks to be roughly the same age/size as Rikuo while the other guardians look no different.

I took a look at your script SoTa. I made some modifications to it, and sent you the rewritten script. I added in the "Da-Da-Da" intro, fixed a bunch of typos, removed a few redundancies, and reworded a few parts so they flowed better. You can choose to use it or not, or even combine it with yours.
I will not stop harping on how much I hate the numbers rating system. However, if you insist on giving it a rating I would recommend simply putting the numbers on screen, and then saying your outro or whatever over it. Saying all of those numbers out loud both feels and sounds weird.

Saying all of those numbers out loud both feels and sounds weird. Well, tbh, about the numbers, it's something I had planned on listening to you about originally, as you may of noticed with the lack of digits in the Aldnoah script.
But this was done for a contest, and they wanted the numbers. The video will just be laying down each foundation at the end, sorta like e a numbers system, but much more details.
Character: hate or love it the moe don't stop, with adorable faces, cute poses, and elegant design, this cast was meant to enthrall you from the geko. Wether or not this hits home is up to you, but fans of the moe genre are going to love it, while fans of the shojo genre will shun it.
Story: Tough, explosive, and unforgiving, this show deserves it's praising, but you can't ignore the lackluster action and underdeveloped cast. Romance fans will wonder wtf is going on with the plot, while Action fans will find a place right at home.
Music: PAAAAARTY! *Grabs guitar and rocks out* A sound track that knows how to excite, and the mix of english lyrics with the japanese tune just brings you into the experience deeper. Some may of wanted more out of an action show sound-track, but with how well balanced it is with drama, fans will be pleased.
^ that sort of system at the ending, bringing a "this type vs this type of fan" at the end.
I just haven't really figured out how to really bring this in without seeming too out of place. |

One of the things you could of done if you're familiar with the show and interject your own thoughts to what's being said to help flesh out or point out things that may of be of interest to that particular part of the review.
I'm finally grasping this, it starting to just flow out naturally, and my reviews are becoming way more fleshed out and on point.

I better stay away from reviewing Nura S2. I have so many issues, and S2 actually makes S1 worse.
It's as if everything in S1 was pointless, the only theme they kept was there morales, all the development of S1 not only DOESN'T MAKE SENSE NOW, it actually goes as far to put a few more holes into both plots.
With even further inconsistent animation, a few characters whose voice actors didn't make any sense, and development more focused on raising power levels then developing a plot, wtf went wrong? S1 was doing well enough, all S2 had to do was expand upon it.
Instead, backed with the same **** choreography, every fight ending in 1 damn swing, it takes a step backwards in story telling while continuing to be sub-par in the other fields.
The only notable improvement was music, loved it. And the new Omnyoji's they added - great characters, that didn't get enough screen time, and we know nothing about.
The only interesting part reveals itself and ends just as quickly at the end. |

In my search of a host I may of finally found a rather... hard answer.
MMD's. Miku Miku Dance programs. I can reformat them... with time, a lot of it, into MP4's then play them as clips over the show, but the effort required here could possibly double to triple the work involved. |

Now I really like that big guy with skulls around his neck, his past really makes you feel for him.
The show for both seasons is nearly 50 episodes. |
