Kail, comparing your edit with my original has really help me see how I use extra wording.
I'll keep an eye on that in the future, great job. Your edits are near perfect, and I'll likely use your edits as the final draft with a few revisions, I moved some paragraphs around so it doesn't seem like I'm jumping topics between setting and character. |

Going back and re-watching the entire To Love Ru series while (impatiently) wait for all of the fourth season to be released uncensored. Surprised at how much of a d*ck Rito was at the start of the show. It's also amazing at how subdued the nudity was in the first season--you can tell the nipples were all added post-production and the nudity, as a whole, had a much more playful/teasing vibe than the borderline-hentai of the following seasons.

Time to try something new: Predicting the End! Ignoring the manga source material (if applicable) I'm going to predict how a show SHOULD end. So first up will be...
High School DxD
I predict that the show will end with the death of either Issei or Rias. Though they could always go in the direction of the super happy joy-joy ending, I don't think they should...because its heart, there is a very strong undercurrent of tragedy guiding the show. Issei, in particular, is a character teetering on the edge of losing control--his powers continue to grow, which (as evidenced in Born) potentially makes him a danger to those around him. Over the course of the show, much has been made of the fact that misfortune follows the Red/White Dragon Emperors and those around them, while at the same time pointing out the fact that dragons seek only to fight against each other without concern for others (which was the reason the angels/demons had to come together to defeat them.) We already know that Issei plans on leaving Rias in the future so that he can be viewed as being her "equal" and to establish himself as a Harem King, and we also know that several other members of the group will follow him when he does so. The show also mentions how people--particularly women--will be drawn to his power as the Red Dragon Emperor, resulting in the double-edged sword of the more Issei's power grows, the more he subverts Rias' ability to lead her family. The show points out several times that it is Issei's doings that have drawn the members together as a family (and not just as servants.)
And this mentions nothing of the fact that Issei still hasn't found peace following Yuma's betrayal. He genuinely loved her; her betrayal has scarred him so deeply to the point that it explains all of his motivations: his desire to form a harem--which satisfies his lustful intentions--allows him to surround himself with pleasurable women while at the same time frees him from having to truly commit (i.e. fall in love) with one person. Asia is probably the closest to Issei on an emotional level, but even their relationship is slightly off. His attitude towards her is driven much more by the desire to protect her (and her innocence) so even though there is a physical attraction between them, Issei is subconsciously taking on more of an "older brother" role as a means of being close to her without having to fall "in love" with her.
As for Rias, the show tells us again and again about how the greatest feature of the Gremory family is the close relationship that they foster with their servants. Rias, in particular, dotes excessively on her family and views all of them as irreplaceable; she has taken on the role of "mother" to every member except for Issei, whom she is obviously in love with. That love, as the last season makes clear, is also a source of great anxiety for Rias as she is resentful of the fact that Issei seemingly only recognizes her as "President" while he constantly draws the attention of the other members. In fact, that anxiety has come to the surface several times already as she and Akeno have openly engaged in battle over Issei's affections, with each skirmish growing more fierce than the previous one. Remember, these two are supposed to be the best of friends and have been together for a long time, but Issei's inclusion has begun to unravel that bond.
In the end, I think one of two things will happen: 1. Issei dies after trying to protect too many people at once or is killed by his fellow Club members after losing control/becoming the Red Dragon Emperor, or 2. Rias will sacrifice herself for one of her club members.
Either way, there SHOULDN'T be a happy ending here.

Strawberry Panic: Someone told me this was awful. That someone was Shadowed Cola. I believed him. Until I didn't. The truth is, this is a very compelling romance anime.
This show features a large cast. Attending St. Miator's we have Nagisa Aoi, Shizuma Hanazono, Tamao Suzumi, Miyuki Rokujo, and Chiyo Tsukidate. Due to the high school and the middle school being combined for the three schools Nagisa transfers in as a 4th year student, which is the equivalent to a 1st year high school student. Her roommate is Tamao Suzumi, a fun and somewhat pervy girl who lived alone until Nagisa shows up. Chiyo is a 1st year and the room keeper for Nagisa, and Tamao. She's clumsy, but has her heart in the right place, and looks up to Nagisa. Miyuki is the Student Council President of St. Miator's. She's business like, and can come off as cold, but secretly is a cry baby. Shizuma is the Etoile, the girl who represents the three schools of St. Miator's, Spica, and Lulim. She's a mystery at first, but as the show progresses we slowly peel back her layers to reveal the most interesting character of the series.
Attending Spica is Hikari Konohana, Amane Ootori, Yaya Nanto, Tsubomi Okuwaka, Shion Tomori, Kaname Kenjo, and Momomi Kiyashiki. Hikari is a 4th year student who rooms with Yaya who secretly has a crush on her. This is of course used to create delicious drama because Hikari is in love with Amane Ootori, the "Prince" of Spica. Shion is the Student Council President of Spica, and wishes to use Amane to get the title of Etoile for a student of Spica. Kaname, and Momomi are members of the Student Council who wish to obtain the title of Etoile for themselves. In order to do this they decide to try and get in the way of Amane and Hikari's relationship. Tsubomi is a 1st year tsundere who is interesting in that she really doesn't have anything to tsundere at. (Yup, it's a verb now. Look it up. (Wait, don't look it up. I don't think it actually is a verb now.))
Attending Lulim is Chikaru Minamoto, Kizuna Hyuga, Remon Natsume, and Kagome Byakudan. Chikaru is the Student Council President for Lulim, but doesn't really seem to have much interests besides just messing around and having fun. Kizuna, and Remon are basically her followers. Kagome is a girl who rarely talks, and carries around a stuffed bear named Percival. She is both friends the other Lulim students, and the 1st-4th years of the other schools. While these four aren't in as important as the other characters (mainly because they have no romance aspects) the show is an absolute treat to watch whenever they're on screen. Especially Chikaru and Kagome.
The three schools, St. Miator's, Spica, and Lulim, all share a dorm called Strawberry Hall, so named because of it's triangular shaped that makes it look like a strawberry.
Of course, you can't have a romance anime without the romance. There are two main circles of romance. The triangle between Nagisa, Shizuma, and Tamao, and the cube between Hikari, Amane, Yaya, and Kaname. The Nagisa romance was fantastic. With real growth moments, and compelling characters. Another aspect I really like was how it spent the first half of the series building up the romance between Nagisa and Shizuma, and the second half destroying it. I'd watch a Nagisa/Shizuma anime for 100 more episodes. The Hikari romance was less so. At times it almost bored me to death, and it almost seemed like Hikari and Amane loved each other because like really guys, they do. One of the biggest things for me was that a lot of the girls seemed selfish at first, but ended up learning to put aside their own desires for the good of others. In a show where almost everyone has a crush on someone else people are bound to get hurt, but they ended up getting over the pain, and supporting the choices of the others.
It's not all good though. The story could really drag it's feet at times. I'd almost recommend only watching half of it. (If the episode isn't about Nagisa/Shizuma it's not worth watching). When they had nowhere to go with the romance they'd throw in what almost felt like filler. Not to say the episodes weren't enjoyable, they were just pointless. The same could be said about Lulim.
The soundtrack was pretty good I guess. I liked the first OP, but I didn't really like the second one or either ED. It was mostly classical music as a background, so if you're into that good for you. The art despite clearly being old was really appealing to me. The animation however, was definitely showing it's age. I remember one scene where the characters were "walking," but in reality they were just bobbing up and down, and the scenery was scrolling past them. It almost made me laugh.
Who I Would Recommend It To: Anyone looking for a compelling yuri romance anime. Actually no, anyone looking for a compelling romance anime. (The yuri is a plus though).

It's really strange watching some of these characters in the first season, particularly Golden Darkness--her mannerisms and voice are noticeably different from later seasons. Even though she's supposed to be the heartless killing machine, she ends up being used in comedy spots and displays some emotion.

Either way, there SHOULDN'T be a happy ending here. Before I jump to editing let me respond to this:
Did you marathon all 3 seasons back to back? Because, you're right tragedy is the under-tone, but over-coming that tragedy is the theme. In every instance of some kind of peril, they come together to solve it. They've never once came to a conclusion without involving the entire cast in the struggle, even the Pheonix vs Dragon thing was made possible through the others helping back him up in the party.
The golden theme here, and much to my dismay in Nora, is friendship, family, and love. How caring for another gives you the passion and energy to keep going. Pretty basic stuff for a shojo.
The show never dares goes too far into reality, even end of season 3 with Rias you can out guess the ending easily. And in this regard I can confidently say High School DxD will have a happy ending, we won, and our way of thinking is better then everyone else's because everyone else were bitter vets from the past war not thinking clearly.
It's a puke worthy progression, and I always kinda look at people strange when they say they think High School DxD has a strong story to back the ecchi - it doesn't not even close. The only praise I give it is amazing pacing, but season 2 has it's up and downs even in that regard.
ISsei wasn't in love with Yuna, either. The reason he's hurt is because for the first time, a girl talked to him. His first experience with a woman that felt so warm and kind, was only given to him to hurt and use him. Before she met him, it was already his dream to have a harem, and it's my opinion Yuna made him rethink that, that maybe one girl is enough if she's special. So you made a good connection here, I just see it differently. It emboldened his desires, made them more clear to him, but most importantly, made him realize it was impossible. That he was a nobody. And Rias gave him back his sense of self-worth.
And I'll assume someone in the cast does die based on your last paragraph - the show will have tragedy, and the ending will have it's highest tragedy, probably the death of the neko girl, the kitten, or all of the above. Rias and our heroes hearts then unite, combining dragon with demon. |

Go back and re-watch the scene with Yuma (after she removes Asia's Sacred Gear)--Issei clearly states that he truly loved her and, given the entire focus of the third season, it's quite obvious that he hasn't been able to move past her betrayal (note the very opening scene of the season, even before Loki's curse.)
I agree that the show will likely shoot for the happy ending, but that would be a shame. Yes, I've binged all three seasons and it's amazing to see how subtly the show has set the potential up to pull the rug out from under the viewer and go with a much darker tone...I just don't think they'll do it, unfortunately. So far, Issei has managed to escape without suffering any real consequences for his actions, which is severely limiting his character's development. It's one thing to want to protect everyone...and another thing entirely if doing so will actually put someone at risk. That's why I'm hoping we haven't seen the last of Loki: the show desperately needs a villain that utilizes his brains instead of pure strength to pose a threat to the chemistry of the group. Someone that can actually force Issei to mature as a character...

It's one of the many flaws of being an otaku, you start seeing this **** a mile away. They'll always aim to please the fans. And in this case the targeted fans is Japanese, specially otaku. And look at what sells best right now, there's no way their'll be a dark or truly developed ending.
High School DxD uses the darkness to give itself a unique idea, but it hasn't once capitalized on it fully. One moment with Arsia at the start, and that was it.
Anything with the tag Shojo is doomed to this fate. There are exception, but they usually come from expectional shows, and High School DxD isn't in any regard all that special. It's much too straight forward and centered on nudity, it's doomed to be like Seikon No Qwaser and Freezing as for as plot importance goes.
It's still a damn good watch for the story, but only because it's cuties involved. Serious characters switched with these moe ones - the show would die quick.
I expect a very lackluster ending |

Started the IdolM@ster, because why not? It's going to be fun comparing this to Love Live. Some points already in it's favor is that the cast is larger, the setting is more my style, and it doesn't use CG for the dance sequences.
Interestingly enough, Love Live was basically an anime that was just an advertisement for the real Idol group who did all of the character's voices. IdolM@ster is an anime that was basically just an advertisement for it's video game.

Finished all 26 episodes of To Love Ru and should finish up Motto tonight; the difference in animation quality between the two seasons is amazing. Don't think I've done a review of those two seasons but I'll probably throw together a series Re-wind Review after I watch/fap to the third season (yet again.)

Just watched Motto To Love Ru #29...still my favorite episode (Rito's "date" with Risa.)
Question: The final scene is of Risa sitting alone on her bed in the dark, with her back turned to the camera, when she lets out a sound. What do you take the sound to be? Is it Risa laughing at herself (in keeping with her jokester attitude) or is it actually the start of her crying, now that she realizes she has (seemingly unrequited) feelings for Rito?
Amazing how one little scene can add so much to a character that's largely used as little more than comedic relief...

Re-wind Review:
To Love Ru
Original score -- n/a Updated score -- 6/10
Hmm...this season did not age well. The animation is rather plain and the colors have a washed-out look to them, though that could just be a result of the gratuitous "lens flare" effect to conceal most of the nudity. I hate to say it, but for almost the entire season Rito is a basically a whiny b*tch that fails to endear himself to the viewer. Worse, Lala is downright annoying as the effervescent ditz that constantly causes trouble for Rito. 80% of the season is basically Lala causing problems for Rito with the inevitable result being that he falls onto a female character in an embarrassing position.
What saves the season is the fact that, right around the eighth or ninth episode, you start to see the other characters enter the picture. Things start off with Kotegawa (by far the prettiest of the harem candidates) trying to uphold the school's morals in light of the chaos that constantly surrounds Rito, followed shortly thereafter by the appearance of Golden Darkness. Both characters bring an interesting dynamic to the show and mark the starting point of Rito's legendary harem; it is Rito's interactions with the two that you can start to see an actual character begin to develop and take hold (even if it is the generic "good guy" persona.)
Fortunately, the final two episodes are great and allow for Rito to stand out, though at the same time it also brings into focus the power his personality holds over those around him and you begin to get the sense of true friendship beginning to build amongst the characters. It's also one of the rare times that you can sense an overall story coming into play, as much of the season exists to thrust Rito into one comedic scenario after another with little concern for telling an actual story.
Motto To Love Ru
Original Score -- n/a Updated Score --7/10
It takes a while to get used to this season's format: each episode generally consists of three separate short stories. Also, characters such as Celine, Momo and Nana suddenly appear on the show without explanation (and Oshizu is now in possession of an actual body.) The animation is much, much improved over the first season (hooray for actual nipples!!!) with bright, vivid colors and much sharper characters.
Rito begins to grow as a character (though his constant shouting when he's embarrassed gets tiresome) as he struggles to come to terms with the fact that he's grown to care for Lala despite still viewing Haruna as the love of his life. Haruna finally gets the chance to stand as her own character and not just serve as the object of Rito's affections, and Lala steadily grows into a genuinely kind-hearted person instead of the ditz from season one. Much of this season actually centers around the growing friendship between Lala and Haruna, which in turn sets the wheels in motion for the third season.
Once again, it is Kotegawa's character that stands out as she best epitomizes the show's delicate balance of humor and emotional development: she is the first of the harem candidates (outside of Lala and Haruna) to realize how deeply she cares about--and loves--Rito. Though her visions of the two of them existing as a married couple raising a family are presented as a joke, it also shows that Kotegawa is thinking much more maturely about what the future holds; whereas the other characters have a short-sighted vision of being romantic with Rito, she is actually imagining a long-term future with him.
Momo and Nana play off of each other wonderfully as constantly sparring sisters, while at the same time serving as great tools to further expand upon Rito's popularity: right from the start, Momo has her eyes set on Rito and she's constantly vying for his attention. Nana, on the other hand, doesn't understand what all of the fuss is about and wants Rito to prove why everyone's not crazy for liking him.
This season also marks the emergence of Golden Darkness as an actual character and not a comedic prop. She is, in many ways, the ultimate test of Rito's kindness and acceptance of others; his "winning over" of her comes about slowly and it is interesting watching her struggle with her own (newly-discovered) feelings . A standout moment of the season is when she asks Rito to kiss her--his response is both sweet and disappointing. It's Rito, in a nutshell.
Once again, the season finishes on a high note as Haruna and Lala come to terms with their feelings for Rito and what that means for their friendship.
SoTa--I remember you mentioning that Mikan is your favorite character: I'm amazed at how little she actually seems to impact these first two seasons. She's seemingly always on the periphery of the show but never the true focus (aside from a short episode that hints at the possibility of her becoming a harem candidate in the future.)

Re-wind Review:
Nisekoi: False Love
Original score -- 8/10 Updated score -- 9/10
Man, what a great show. Having watched the Monogatari series, I can say that I "get" the animation style now, and found the characters to be quite beautiful this time around. Still have a soft spot for poor Seishiro but man, Chitoge really grew on me this viewing; a truly epic tsundere character that rivals Taiga in terms of going from "loathsome character" to "damn, I hope everything works out for her."
Still an amazing feat to not only pull off the Romeo and Juliet theme with characters that initially despise each other, but to do so by throwing in a harem angle, to boot. Much like in Toradora!, it's fun watching a fire and ice combo come together as a result of actually being around each other and letting their relationship develop over time and it serves as a wonderful contrast to the other relationship tropes that the series plays with (i.e. the crush, the swooning maiden and the obsessive lover.)
Ruri and Shuu make for wonderful supporting characters that do a solid job of driving much of the plot forward while serving as tools for comedic relief.
One of those rare shows that gets better the second time around, I'm getting ready to binge through season two and see if it stands up to my lofty review after a second viewing.

I'm amazed at how they've managed to keep an actual storyline running throughout the season and somehow find a way to tie it all together.

I stopped being surprised by South Park years ago, geniuses I tell ya.
I recently finished up Date A Live, and I won't say too much about it.
Because it would be loaded with every sort of hate for this sort of fan service.
See, there's a difference between Ecchi, and Fanservice:
Ecchi is meaningful to the plot in some way, like High School DxD and the harem creation, To Luv Ru for similar reasons, and most recently Testament of a Sister Devil. The ecchi plays a role in the story, and makes it a part of what's going on.
Fan service doesn't, it's just pointless scenes meant to show off a character and nothing more.
This is what Date A Live does with fan service, rather then it being a part of the growing relationship and including it in the story, they jam it down your throat.
Jam? How do you 'jam' such cute girls down someones throat? Wouldn't you want to see cute girls doing cute things?
**** yea
But it helps A LOT if I KNOW WHO THE **** THEY ARE.
The first spirit we meet - WHO THE **** ARE YOU. You eat, you cry, you *****, you complain, wtf else do I know about you? That's your mega-dumb-ass level tsundere that flips out over anything?
She's so poorly developed it's confusing who she even is, when you meet her she seems pretty cool, has her **** together even though she's in a strange world, and acts like she could get a long fine on her own.
And then date gets mentioned, and she screams it, in our face, 5 times. And she never recovers as a character. Turning into a bumbling blonde bimbo whose awkwardness towards everything takes away from her every moment.
And the white hair girl is just as bad, she's awkwardly introduced like some stalkers, then continues to grow on the stalker signals until she's straight up uncomfortable to see on your screen, and you're not even sure why she's there.
All the development surrounding her never gets fleshed out - are you a sniper or CQC expert? Why do you give you the green light to shoot? WHO THE HELL ARE YOU TOO ACTUALLY?! You have some dark background but all you do is either act like a stalker, horny, or pissed. You have no other expressions.
I haven't even seen, at any point, the second season, and I'm reminded why. So much bad in Date A Live. The only redeeming part is the evil black hair character, she's pretty cool, so are the events surrounding her. But it doesn't last long.

Sota you are officially committing a crime if you don't do an in-depth look at Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai. There is a reason that show sat at the very top of my anime list for a such a long time. The genius segue of a light hearted, and funny rom-com into a look at societal norms, learning to accept who you are, who you were, and who others are. That's not even mentioning the peek at how the loss of a loved one can deeply impact one's life. It's just, dammit I'm going to have to watch again....
