MAG is the best game ever made, so I believe Dust should be more like MAG in terms of FPS gameplay, comms, platoon structure, and scale. Only then would this game sucseed in replacing our beloved game. LONG LIVE MAG! MAY DUST FILL THE VOID LEFT BY MAG IN OUR LIVES!
Yes I know this is QQ inducing, we need some anyways to stay healthy, the STB threads arent doing it anymore. |

It's playable, but it's on it's last breath and CCP is thankfully doing everything to put the poor thing out of it's misery by pandering to and usurping almost the entirety of it's remaining playerbase. |

Personally i think that Mag and Dust are too different to fill the void the other game left, and i do think that they would be better off making MAG-2 or make a major patch to mag to introduce aircrafts. |

Mention something positive about MAG and they shall appear. =P
On the subject, yes, I wish more elements of MAG to appear in Dust, not needed to "be a new" MAG, but absorbing the fun level that MAG had would be a awesome addition to Dust, as of now, the beta isn't making me wish to play it as much as, for an example, MAG did (and still does on some levels) back in the days, but I hope it'll grow. |

What makes MAG great.
1. Proximity chat 2. 256 players, but it's structured to 32 vs 32. On Escalation is 32 vs 32 vs 32. 3. Constant feeling of adrenaline rush 4. Game modes are unique, such as Acquisition, Domination, Escalation, Interdiction, and Sabotage. 5. Platoon structure 6. Clan deploy 7. Airstrikes like Precision, Bombardment, Straffing run, 8. Repair kits and Med kits has a purpose.
What makes Dust different from MAG
1. UVT voice chat 2. Local chat room to talk with EVE players 3. Massive vehicle warfare if every player has enough ISK to duke it out 4. You can create many loadouts for every situation in a battle 5. Skill trees can take 7 years to complete 6. So far, I heard the scale is going to be 24 vs 24 per district battle, but there are numerous battle is happening in one planet simultaneously 7. Variety of MAPS 8. Contracts 9. Player vs Environment. You'll be fighting a lot of drones. 10. Corporation battles 11. You can sell your Aur items for ISK 12. Free to download
Edit: If only Dust and MAG are combined all together. |

Like we dont throw insults for everyone in the alliance in comms from time to time We've all pretty much played together for the past couple of years because of the history (most) of us have with MAG, but I do not believe in any way, Dust 514 should be like MAG.

game modes weren't really all that unique tbh. it's pretty much the same thing in all of them, run forward and capture points. Hopefully Conquest on a district with a player MCC would allow for alot of creativity for attacking and defending the district. And be more engaging cause of the defensive points of the enemy.

This topic comes up far too often and gets both discussed and interpreted incorrectly.
People do care about MAG, but what some fail to understand is that MAG isn't just a game to those who played it. MAG was, and still is, much more than that. MAG is to those who played it what Eve is to people who play Eve: a community. It is a gigantic tangled web of connections between a bunch of players who united for a common cause. We played MAG because we wanted to enjoy playing a game with people with whom we enjoyed playing it.
The MMOFPS genre is tiny in every sense of the word. If you look at it on the PlayStation 3, you find one game: MAG. Dust is literally the only game that promises to fill this niche for years to come.
What is frequently missed by Eve community members is that the MAG community is just like Eve's. It has a bunch of baggage and history, friends and foes, alliances and entities. And the MAG community is migrating en masse to Dust. We're not all about to suffer a bout of spontaneous amnesia and forget our shared experiences, nor should we. The ridiculous perception that everyone should forget everything about MAG can only be misdirected anger from Eve players. Change is coming. Embrace it, like it, hate it, whatever. If you have a problem, you have it with Dust. You don't have it with MAG. Asking MAG players to do the equivalent of an Eve player forgetting all the corporations, alliances, people, and experiences you've encountered and shared while playing Eve is just pure crying.
The other side of the coin is old MAG players who make insufferably frequent references to MAG. Not to MAG as a community, but to MAG as a video game. MAG had elements as a game that were, and are, fantastic in terms of enjoyment of the experience. Those elements are often applicable to Dust. That being said, game mechanics that are good don't need a reference to MAG to validate what makes them good. They stand on their own and on arguments all their own. MAG, the video game, is dead for all intents and purposes. The parts of MAG that are good are still good, and they're good not because they were part of MAG. They're good because they work.
What's the point of all of this? Eve players need to STFU about MAG- you probably didn't even play it and you're using it as a surrogate for your own fears that the power balance in Eve is going to change upon the release of Dust. MAG players need to STFU about MAG- MAG is over and we're here to discuss how to make Dust better, not further cry nostalgically over how much we used to enjoy MAG. Just look at ROFL. We're not a group of MAG guys and Eve guys trying to reconcile two incompatible philosophies. We're a group of Dust corporations and Eve corporations who accept how our interpersonal relationships have developed because of MAG and Eve, and we look forward to maximizing our enjoyment of Eve and Dust, two games connected together.
These MAG discussions don't get us anywhere closer to making Dust a better game from either side of the table. This is the last time you'll ever see MAG more than once in a post from me. |

I still care about MAG, not the way I used to, but it was undoubtedly fun, and DUST could take elements like the command structure and other gameplay elements...

Hate to say it but MAG was the first FPS I actually played coming from an PC MMORPG background and I enjoyed playing it even though my KDR was never any good but playing with with Corps like PRO and OSG made it fun like being in a guild, This game being part of the EVE universe is whats going to make the game play a lot deeper then MAG could of ever been. when CCP finally gets this polished we will forget MAG. stopped reading after there as someone who played MAG alot i can tell u MAG is highly overrated, has no clan support....NO zerg deploy is NOT clan support....clan wars is. Maps were linear.......yes they were, break down how u approached each map and realised it was either left right or the dumbass route aka the middle. Dom wasnt epic like it was made out to be infact the entire game minus the INT and ESC are basically 32v32x 2 or x4 depending if ur playing ACQ or DOM

MAG was a great game. You as someone who admittedly played many hundreds of hours, can't deny that. (you wouldn't have played so much if it wasn't good)
That said, it DEF had it's flaws. However the good outweighed the bad, and a game like Dust should def take a look at MAG. Use elements that MAG got right, and avoid the mistakes that zipper made with their game.
I agree that the 128v128 and 64v64 were really just 32v32 x 4 and x2.... for the most part. (you could actually interact with the other 32v32 groups though) This aspect was overrated and not what made MAG great. It was the diversity of different objectives in battle, the proxy chat, and good comms system, the community, the rpg elements with the skill trees, all that individually were small things, but collectively made it a great game.
In terms of linearity of the maps...I agree, they were linear. However, this was a good thing. Sabo, Acq, and Dom were fairly linear, BUT this is what forced the action. You didn't have that many lows, it forced gun fights and action...where as with Dust's more open maps, there are plenty of times where you're looking for something to do, or someone to kill. Although in fairness, MAG had this with Interdiction and Escalation. They were more "open" but also had less action than the other modes. This has actually been one of my criticisms of Dust. It either needs a few more players than it currently has for each given map OR some maps that are a LITTLE more linear, to push the action more.

If only DUST had the excellent command structure, tight knit squad play, command structure and decent gun mechanics.
Not to mention it was a very, very fun game.

This is what Dust is lacking is MAG = Massive Action Game. There should be an objective that forces people to be in the objective.
In MAG: 1. Objectives double your points 2. Frago'd objectives double your points 3. Medic is rewarded because it gives points 4. Repair kits is always present, it gives double points for repairing an asset if frago'd 5. MVP is based on players who does more teamwork gameplay rather than just camping for kills. Teamwork gameplay like fighting near the objective, healing players, reviving players, repairing assets, etc. 6. At the end of a game, you get awarded for medals such as engineering, medic, screaming eagle, mvp, purple ribbons, grim reapers, etc. This shows your profile to let others knows what you do in the field. If you see someone has a lot of medic awards, heck...I'll get this guy in the group. Or...this guy has good KDR, but doesn't have repair medals, medic awards, and he has only a sniper medal specialist, this tell you that this guy must have been sniping all the time.
Dust is good, but it's lacking something. Dust is becoming like a farm fest for ISK and just leveling up. When I'm at MAG, I care a lot for winning. When I'm at Dust, who cares If I lose or win, I don't judge your ambition, I'm just here of what you can afford. You can pay the right price, I'm in. |

Yes I know this is QQ inducing, we need some anyways to stay healthy, the STB threads arent doing it anymore. stopped reading after there as someone who played MAG alot i can tell u MAG is highly overrated, has no clan support....NO zerg deploy is NOT clan support....clan wars is. Maps were linear.......yes they were, break down how u approached each map and realised it was either left right or the dumbass route aka the middle. Dom wasnt epic like it was made out to be infact the entire game minus the INT and ESC are basically 32v32x 2 or x4 depending if ur playing ACQ or DOM its a casual pubstar game. MAG was a great game. You as someone who admittedly played many hundreds of hours, can't deny that. (you wouldn't have played so much if it wasn't good) That said, it DEF had it's flaws. Edit: My point is... "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" This is what Dust is lacking is MAG = Massive Action Game. +1 for well written post.
I like you ideas about medals and rewards for being more then just the best killer. But I think if I remember correctly that will be happening soon. I'm sorry I can't find the original post about it, but they did stat there was solo medals, group/squad medals, corp medals, short term and long term achievements that turn into medals. Its one of the reasons I was interested in Dust to start with. Also this is a MMO, like any and all great MMO's there is achievements that you get, this is part of the crack addiction to all MMO's, start with small achievements that hook you into the game (Im sure MAG had these) then as you progress each achievement gets harder and the payout is better. AKA the crack known as a MMO.

EvE, medals are awarded and designed by players. So after a battle your team leader could give somebody a medal, not automatically by computer.
DUST should eventually have a larger squad structure and player cap then MAG, just could be a little bit.
The clan deploy will be replaced with larger persistent squad/platoon/company once we have leadership skills and corp battles eventually.
A bonus for actions near objectives would be nice, squad orders give bonus now. If both were +50%, it would be 125% bonus to take objective designated by squad leader. This should be enough of a incentive, any one that ignores obj will no matter what if that's not enough.
Showing the diminishing returns, like MAG showed the happy hour multiplier, would be nice.
In think DUST 514 is on track to be better then MAG in every way, it's not there yet...but it will be from what is hinted at by place holders. And by gear implied by EvE parallels, many things are clearly missing to anyone that played EvE. There are no Amarr weapons for an Amarr suit for example, till next build at least. Still leaves caldari and minmatar heavy weapons with no caldari/minmatar suits to use them. |

Planet side 2 is the new MAG. PS2 is like MAG on growth hormones. Dust is like a stunted version of MAG right now due to low player numbers on huge maps. Plus the dust gun mechanics are still dismal compared to MAG.
If you played MAG, you know some of the best games are sabo when it goes down to the wire and c is charged and the game timer stops. Those are the most intense games.
PS2 delivered that same experience for me earlier in the week, when one battle defending the same choke points between six letters, went on for just over TWO HOURS. The battle was totally epic, with infantry, armor and aircraft.
I've never played an FPS where the battle takes so long. In that battle, the NC, who are the PS2 equivalent of SVER, were finally pushed back to another hex after just over two hours. The TR, who are the PS2 equivalent of Valor, then pushed forward and kept the attack on the NC into the adjacent hex.
I've kind of been drawn more to PS2 since then, because its so much like MAG, better than MAG even. And this makes perfect sense as MAG was bases on the original Planet side.
Dust would need to have a lot more players and improvements to battle structure to allow open ended battles to replicate the kind of fps ecstacy that PS2 is building up to be.
Dust is OK, but lots of work left. It will be a good game when finished, but if some of the things I mentioned are not addressed, then dust will never fill the MAG void.

Actually, I don't think it will take that long. CCP currently owns the most expensive server in the world for their EVE universe, so funtionality isn't going to be an issue. The company that released MAG (and became the first to release 128 v 128) was called Zipper Interactive. They were a Sony company that went under. CCP, without a doubt has the technology, and I would bet (with enough support form the Requests forums) that they would release new game modes/corporation battle scenarios that would allow different numbers of players (hopefully streching to at least 64 v 64) |

Too bad this isn't a request thread, because I've got some things to say about Dust reaching its fullest potential. Let me know what you guys think about how dust would be affected by these implimentations.
1) Bigger, and more advanced Leadership Hierarchy there is already a topic for this ([Suggestion] Enhanced Leadership Structure) so all I really have to say is, leaders should have more powers and there should be more of them. (read that topic)
2) Bigger battles and different battle types Everyone who played MAG fell in love with it as soon as they wrapped their head around the leadership and Objective concepts. They had to start small to get the Mechanics of the game (32 v 32) and as they began to understand better, they started moving to more objective and stratgically based modes, like Sabotage, Acquisition (my personal favorite at 64 v 64), and escalaation. After that, they are ready for the big guns. the 128 v 128 Domination mode (of which I have only played 2 games of) That given, depending on the map size, and objectives on the corporate level warfare, the number of max players should vary. The maps seem a little too open, and they should try for 64 v 64 at least for their larger battles.
These are the things that made people love MAG! The graphics were not the greatest, but the gameplay was nearly flawless (no lag at 256 player battles). The reason people don't play/buy MAG anymore is because they had a limited number of maps and the S.V.E.R maps were very unbalanced at the beginning. So now, everybody plays for SVER and it is rare to have a battle without SVER in it. Luckily, maps can't really be unbalanced with the way CCP is running it. Let me know what you think! |

You have lag? Its your harware then bro, cuz I have only experienced lag once, and that was the first half a second of my playing domination for the first time. There aren't many glitches in MAG either. You can call them glitches, but usually it just means you don't know what you are doing. I still play huge 64 v 64 matches and they are always fun. Never lagged, and quite consistent. If you downladed MAG today (which you can for free for the trial) you could get into a new or active game easy.

MAG set a new standard for FPS and there are 2 main companies trying to build on it right now. The first is DUST 514 (obviously) This is very obvious because of the way they have organized Squad Leadership, and Theatre Command. You may say that they are getting these concepts from Battlefield 3 or something, but try to name a game before MAG that had organized Squads... Nothing. MAG defined that part of the gaming world. DUST is already an improvement on MAG because of the EVE universe, and your ability to purchase assests and use them on the field. Also the vehicular combat of DUST blows MAG out of the water. DUST, however, falls short on groud leadership abilities. The players don't have very much motivation to stay with their squad. MAG did an excellent job at convincing people thhat they need to stick together and rely on eachother to win, which is something DUST is failing at.
The other game that is rising from MAG's ashes (and was mentioned earlier in the topic) is Planetside 2. This game has the player count problem fixed. The battle is ongoing and essentially never ends. There are thousands of players on one map (server) at any one time, but the thing about this game that is failing is any organization at all. Obviously due to the incredible map size, one all powerful commmander would be overwhellmed by the massive number of units he would have to command. For Planetside 2 to succede, they need to split the map into parts, and give a hierarchy of leadership applying to that portion of the map. Leadership roles would be rearranged and changed based on territory control, but it would make them game the ultimate experience.
Both games are in closed beta right now, and are both free to play. It will be interesting to see which one impliments leadership the fastest. |

Zipper closed shop actually because of map inbalance. The SVER maps were way to easy to defend, so all of the best players gravitated to SVER. That made people stop buying it. Also they way they got money was by selling the game as opposed to making the game free to play (which is necessary to have 256 players in a battle) and having the option to buy special items or having an ingame currency that you could purchase. Other than that, the reason it went under was because you couldn't pick the map you played. It was randomized. Today, the MAG community is still somewhat active, but it is dominated by SVER. |

Haha, MAG was originally a SOCOM title, so it was part of the birth of the idea. Didn't do my research? All of the titles you mentioned came out in thhe same phase of gaming. First came the FPS, then the Different kits, then the skill tree, then the Leadership (the phase you mentioned), and now we are in a phase that seems to be splitting a little. Dust with its skill tree, squads, and MMO world effects, and Planetside 2 and its huge long term battles, skill tree, and squads.
I'm just saying that all Dust has to hold onto is EVE connection, new map layout every battle, and the skill tree. They don't have an impressive leadership structure (like PS2), they don't have a massive number of players (PS2), and they don't have long term battles! Sure they have long term effects of one battle, but they don't have any one player going on a real time campaign on a single planet. Planetside 2 may dominate Dust if Dust isn't careful. Lucky for Dust that they have the failsafe of being connected to EVE.
Also, nobody is saying "ditch everything good about Dust and go straight for a MAG duplicate". What we are saying is "take the good from MAG and add it to Dust, because Dust has thhe potential to hold onto and support the things that MAG couldn't. It has the potential to support the things that would've made MAG a blockbuster. |

GTFO and play something else if you want to play a game like MAG. Dust is meant to be a full-scale MMOFPS that directly links to the Eve universe. Really? hmmm rainbow six battlefield bad company two socom organized squads. if MAG birthed these ideas i would like proof of this and PLANETSIDE was made way before mag if you bothered to do your research. i gorw tired of people comparing it to make or make it something its not MAG is MAG DUST is DUST plain and simple. I persnally didnt like MAG due to poor community and Racial only squads. if you were not of some racial class they would kick you from the squad. incompetent leaders. simplistic gameplay. Game modes not enough to keep me occupied. Haha, MAG was originally a SOCOM title, so it was part of the birth of the idea. Didn't do my research? ;) and all of the titles you mentioned came out in thhe same phase of gaming. Guys! Do your research! Anybody can sound smart by bashing on someone and saying "I grow tired" which you mispelled btw ;) Also, nobody is saying "ditch everything good about Dust and go straight for a MAG duplicate". oh pardon me for not being gramattically correct. and the cons outweigh the pros in MAG have you played EVE? because if you havent obviously you have no room to talk on What Dust can and will be. and your also dismissing the fact that this is a BETA. Ya know what man? I'm sorry. I hate fights, and I don't know why I made those comments (I'll edit my rude comment out). I think you are totally right, I should've done my research, because you obviously have.
I think that this topic has a valid point still. To put it in a term that pro and anti MAG groupies will still appreciate, this is what I'd say. Dust has the potential to be the greatest FPS known to man. Because of its depth with the EVE universe, and the scenarios of those battles, we want organized military action. We want the battles to be an Organized Military Effort as opposed to a multi-million ISK contracted effort, being decided by a bunch of "run around and shoot players". What we want is to have organized structure to add to the depth and intensity of the Sandbox. The closest thing that people can think of as far as "organized military efforts" is MAG. MAG obviously had its downfalls, otherwise it would still be around today, but it did have a good aspect. The idea that troops aren't just dropped off and told to win, but rather placed in squads with many different aspects within, is what people loved about MAG, and what they hope will happen in Dust. I think that right now, it is not organized enough! I think we need more leaders to help with the organization, and I think we need more abilities for leaders to add a depth to the game that can only be acheived in a universe as deep as EVE. I made a topic about this, and its pretty much everything that we have been discussing about Dust in this topic, so if you want to read up on it, its called, DUST: An Organized Military Effort, not a Mindless Bloodbath
Once again, I am sorry. Hopefully we can continue this discussion without the Pro/Anti MAG issues. |

I don't think we are as far off as you think we are! I can't list all the points here that I already posted in my Leadership suggestion topic (2 posts up) but if that topic were more active, it would catch more Dev eyes, and maybe get some results. I think it has been inactive mainly because people don't want to read it, but this is a Closed Beta! That means if people want it, the Devs try to make it happen. If don't get the Leadership implimentation we want, its our own fault!! |

No... The only two similarities I see between Dust and MAG... Controls and scale. The scale is supposed to be even LARGER than MAG. So for Cripes sake stop complaining about MAG being dead and accept the fact that it isn't coming back unless another MAG fan has the skill to remake the game themselves. Just stating my thoughts... No intention to be too hurtful but from what I've seen a lot of you MAG fans get all pissy when people start dissing your game. *Prepares for the hate with chips and popcorn* |

MAG was the bomb. But after Zipper collapsed it went downhill. I still played it anyway until I got the merc pack. Dust is sweet as can be and I tried playing MAG back when Dust servers were only up three days a week and I couldnt play it anymore. Yes MAG was my favorite game ever, but if they get Dust running smoothly and balanced out it will probably be incomparibly better. MAG will always have a huge place in me as it was my first online game. It opened the world of multiplayer to my life and without it I most likely wouldnt be playing Dust. Never liked Call of Duty or Battlefield. I did enjoy the first Halo back in the day but the 360 is a hunk of junk that only works for a year if your lucky before it crashes and you gotta buy a new one. Plus paying to be online is pretty dang stupid when PSN is free. Anyways Im blabbering. I loved MAG but its dead to me, bring on Dust 514. Get some balance and get rid of the horrible lag spikes and this game will be great. Oh ya, and the lame hard freezes and invalid fittings. Long live Dust 514. |

MAG set the bar for FPS IMO. No other game raised my adrenaline as much as it did back in the early days.
Now that was a shooter!
I had hoped to get some of the same excitement from DUST and it just isn't there. Not that I really hoped DUST would be like MAG but just that I hoped it would offer the same level of excitement. I was greatly hopeful for DUST and so far it's just been disappointing.
I think I'm just gona give up on any hope of ever finding any game that captivated me as much as MAG did. I just don't think it's possible...well, maybe with the next gen console, we'll see.
Gonna try DUST again after release (providing it's FTP, or when it eventually goes FTP) in the hopes it does improve from now. I really had high hopes for this game.
I haven't tried Planetside 2 yet even though I was really looking forward to it at one time. I kinda lost site of it and forgot about it. Maybe I'll check it out soon.
All you guys who plan to stick with this beta until release...do us all a favor and give some real feedback. Try to get CCP to make it better. I really wanted it to be something great and so far it's just been a big let down. |

I loved MAG, but I don't want Dust 514 to simply become "MAG Mk. II".
Personally, I want Dust to surpass MAG, and if I go by my Beta experience from both games, it is well on its way to doing so. True, I do believe that some features from MAG may benefit Dust, but ultimately CCP needs to make the decision as to what to include, as they have to make the best game possible with such dated technology.
I'm pretty confident though, as I believe that this game will become the best ever FPS out there, when CCP get there hands on PS4 technology. |

About a minute later with a fresh drink in hand. Things that made MAG good:
1. Easy to follow clanmates/friends into games they were already playing, so you can group up after. 2. No stupid internal mail that doesn't register on your XMB notifications. Seriously, i've kicked people off my friends list to make room for Dust players, so I can have an easier way to group (and I have 4 different chat channels). 3. The hit detection was pretty ace. 4. In Domination, the complexity and simultaneous simplicity for all levels of leadership to be able to talk to one another was amazing. Even as a squad leader, i'd be able to talk to the company leader and ask for a tactical refresh and/or how soon he was gonna lay one down (provided the Company Leader a. knew what he was doing b. spoke english c. had a mic) and i'd speak to other platoon leaders and even the squad leaders and be able to be helpful. 5. If you don't listen to Slayer, you kinda suck as a human being. 6. Your mom. |
