Yes I know this is QQ inducing, we need some anyways to stay healthy, the STB threads arent doing it anymore. stopped reading after there as someone who played MAG alot i can tell u MAG is highly overrated, has no clan support....NO zerg deploy is NOT clan support....clan wars is. Maps were linear.......yes they were, break down how u approached each map and realised it was either left right or the dumbass route aka the middle. Dom wasnt epic like it was made out to be infact the entire game minus the INT and ESC are basically 32v32x 2 or x4 depending if ur playing ACQ or DOM its a casual pubstar game. MAG was a great game. You as someone who admittedly played many hundreds of hours, can't deny that. (you wouldn't have played so much if it wasn't good) That said, it DEF had it's flaws. However the good outweighed the bad, and a game like Dust should def take a look at MAG. Use elements that MAG got right, and avoid the mistakes that zipper made with their game. I agree that the 128v128 and 64v64 were really just 32v32 x 4 and x2.... for the most part. (you could actually interact with the other 32v32 groups though) This aspect was overrated and not what made MAG great. It was the diversity of different objectives in battle, the proxy chat, and good comms system, the community, the rpg elements with the skill trees, all that individually were small things, but collectively made it a great game. In terms of linearity of the maps...I agree, they were linear. However, this was a good thing. Sabo, Acq, and Dom were fairly linear, BUT this is what forced the action. You didn't have that many lows, it forced gun fights and action...where as with Dust's more open maps, there are plenty of times where you're looking for something to do, or someone to kill. Although in fairness, MAG had this with Interdiction and Escalation. They were more "open" but also had less action than the other modes. This has actually been one of my criticisms of Dust. It either needs a few more players than it currently has for each given map OR some maps that are a LITTLE more linear, to push the action more. Edit: My point is... "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" This is what Dust is lacking is MAG = Massive Action Game. There should be an objective that forces people to be in the objective. In MAG: 1. Objectives double your points 2. Frago'd objectives double your points 3. Medic is rewarded because it gives points 4. Repair kits is always present, it gives double points for repairing an asset if frago'd 5. MVP is based on players who does more teamwork gameplay rather than just camping for kills. Teamwork gameplay like fighting near the objective, healing players, reviving players, repairing assets, etc. 6. At the end of a game, you get awarded for medals such as engineering, medic, screaming eagle, mvp, purple ribbons, grim reapers, etc. This shows your profile to let others knows what you do in the field. If you see someone has a lot of medic awards, heck...I'll get this guy in the group. Or...this guy has good KDR, but doesn't have repair medals, medic awards, and he has only a sniper medal specialist, this tell you that this guy must have been sniping all the time. Dust is good, but it's lacking something. Dust is becoming like a farm fest for ISK and just leveling up. When I'm at MAG, I care a lot for winning. When I'm at Dust, who cares If I lose or win, I don't judge your ambition, I'm just here of what you can afford. You can pay the right price, I'm in.
+1 for well written post.
I like you ideas about medals and rewards for being more then just the best killer. But I think if I remember correctly that will be happening soon. I'm sorry I can't find the original post about it, but they did stat there was solo medals, group/squad medals, corp medals, short term and long term achievements that turn into medals. Its one of the reasons I was interested in Dust to start with. Also this is a MMO, like any and all great MMO's there is achievements that you get, this is part of the crack addiction to all MMO's, start with small achievements that hook you into the game (Im sure MAG had these) then as you progress each achievement gets harder and the payout is better. AKA the crack known as a MMO.
