Our goal with this was to not add filter options directly into the squad adverts as we could probably come up with hundreds of them. Instead we gave as much space as possible for squad names so that players can police themselves and find different ways of working with this. The whole sandbox and offering tools for players to work with thing.
That is not to say we will never add filtering options, possibly in the future if it is required, but not at this time. Game Designer // Team True Grit http://twitter.com/regnerba |

Simple is better than complex when adding something new. My vote is for standings but I've been asking for those since the beginning. |

I applaud progress. But this seems to be a somewhat underwhelming feature for established units who have no problem finding Squads....only trouble syncing the collective efforts of those Squads into the same battle...and I am speaking specifically about Faction Warfare.
That needs to be the next step up the Squad Chain. Either full 16-player Squads or the ability to access the Team menu prior to deployment and populate it so all players enter the match together. |

The whole sandbox and offering tools for players to work with thing. That is not to say we will never add filtering options, possibly in the future if it is required, but not at this time. Can we get another option, under the Availability, that lets us set if we want autojoin on or not? So if I, as squad leader, put out a Public squad invite saying "5+ mil SP" and a new player clicks it I see an alert that says "Sir Snuffington wants to join your squad" and I can click that, see their stats and hit accept / reject?
I know this will cause some problems of people just rejecting people who don't meet their strict requirements. But rejection will happen regardless. It also saves a step of that new player joining a squad labeled "5+ mil SP" and then being kicked by the squad leader. This helps ensure that the squad leader doesn't have to play whack a mole by kicking people who don't fit the criteria out to make space.

Foxy and Nullar, can you clarify the life-cycle of a Squad?
When I create a squad, how long will it live? Can i still hand off the squad to someone else? Can I log off, without impacting it? Will it exist after everybody has left it (eg. until the owner re-enters)? Can others create squads with the exact same name and scope?

I think this is going to be great to get a random squad when you want. However, if squad leaders are looking to get a squad together that has a high chance of success, so I might be looking for specific roles (for example, I play logi, but I may want 2x heavies and 3x assaults, all 5 mil+ sp. How do I know they perform those roles? How can I verify their sp?); being in a random squad doesn't necessarily mean you're bad. I get that.
I'm just saying that sometimes good players have times when only a few corp members are online or are already squadded with people from various chat channels, and it'd be convenient to get a group together to succeed. The way it looks now, though, is that squadding will be done with whoever clicks join, regardless of the name of the squad. |

Agreed, though I also like the fact that if I don't see someone log in, by having a squad up, they can join on their own without me having to invite them - or if I want a squad I won't have to wait to be noticed. |

It would be very useful if people could join any time the squad isn't already deployed in battle.
Right now a corp squad has to keep checking back in corp chat to see if anyone recently connected who might be lfs.
Being able to queue up for a particular squad the moment they exit battle would be really nice. Even better would be a squad status indicating the match type and remaining timer if they are currently deployed so we have an idea of how long a wait we might have. |

On the other hand, if you have a squad with a sort of uniformity to it, you can be pretty deadly as well. i've seen what appears to be, all laser/scrambler squads, and they seem pretty deadly.
Something like Heavy/Logi squads, or LAZOR LUV Squad, or Stealth Squads, could make for some interesting new fun. Typically when I've squadded with my corp, it is just a 'bring your best' kind of squad. We haven't made squads based on much. |

This is actually much better than what I expected it to be.
- Ability for corporations to recruit outside of the forums and much easier for new players to find ones to get into instead of just randomly applying
- Allows people within corps to find the appropriate squad for them if those that create the squads tag them appropriately (ie Ambush Squad)
Im sure that there are many other good points but those two were just top of mind. |

This is better than expected, very pleased.
One thing I would like to suggest as far as the future of squads is a way for squad leaders on the same team to communicate without switching to team chat and a way to communicate with EVE players connected to the district. Off the top of my head, would it not work to simply use the P2T button as a sort of toggle between channels? Default you are in squad chat, push once you are in squad lead talk/EVE talk. Push again you are back in squad chat. |

Yay! More chances to get squad stomped while playing solo.
We get it CCP, squads and working with squads = iWin button. But how about you give those of us who either prefer to play solo, or want to every now and then, something balanced and fun to play in?
Took a week break from Dust and decided to jump back in last night. One unbalanced match after another, squads viciously stomping teams with no organized squads. I had maybe 2 matches that were fun, the rest were torcher and frustration as the majority of matches were against proto squads from a decent corp who all rolled as one big blob slaughtering anything in their path.
There is plenty of opportunity to play as organized squads in this game, so how about one ambush mode with no squads? It's ridiculous that the requirement for enjoying this game is to squad up. Might as well call the game Squad 514. |

Not really. You can only do so much in a monthly cycle and they spent some time in the beginning of the current one fixing issues from the previous. I'm liking what they have showed us so far, pretty good and important stuff, but as far as bigger changes go I'm expecting one for every two patches.
Not that I wouldn't like to be surprised. |

New Weapons and Vehicle balances were pushed out of 1.5 tentatively into 1.6 but there is no guarantee that is going to happen or not. 1.6 already had a lot of work thrown into it and the weapons and vehicle changes coming in may have overinflated it. While there is no limits to patch sizes CCP does like keeping the patches smaller as its less to sort though in bug hunting as well as not keeping customers in download limbo.
So unless CCP says otherwise I don't expect features of 1.6 set in stone or guaranteed to be in. |

Mixed message here. Are the weapon and vehicle balances being pushed to 1.7? OR is it just safe to assume that you guys are just a whole patch behind now? I.e 1.5 is now 1.6. 1.6 is now 1.7 etc. etc. etc. |

This is also a case where having a standings system would be nice.
Otherwise, looks like a great start.
When we next touch squads I would like to see the option in squads along the lines of "applications must be approved" and then the squad leader can accept or reject applications to join the squad. Game Designer // Team True Grit http://twitter.com/regnerba |

Eh, might be over-complicating things if you go with accept/reject applications in the true sense of the word.
I mean, just show name, total SP and an accept/reject option - all you really need. |

One of the changes that we couldn't get in and ready is that we would like players to be able to see squads from their own corporation and alliance even if they are full or deployed to a battle. This helps give players an idea as to how active their corporation/alliance is but also would allow you to join a squad while it's deployed and then just wait for them to finish the battle. Overall you can tell that it's a good foundation to work upon, which will allow for many interesting features. That's one of the things I liked most about the way you handled the Squad Finder, the other is how it will help a lot the life of the newberries.

I don't expect anything to be set in stone, let alone the features of 1.6 or any other patch. Even if they said they'd try to push it into 1.6, which they did and that's what I first meant, I can understand if its not ready until then and I will not flood the forums with rage and tears if that's the case. I know they have a lot to work on and that they are trying to deliver something with quality which is impossible to do in a haste. I prefer a job well done, even if it takes a while, than something rushed and rubbish. Plus I'd rather have this kind of communication even if we have to deal together with frustration sometimes, than having no communication at all.
As for holding back on the patch because of the download limbo, I think it's worth it to download anyway! Don't hold that stuff back because of me, do it if you have too many bugs to sort through or anything but I'm fine with downloading lots of awesomeness.
Plus... "1.6 already has a lot of work thrown into it". I wonder what we might see that's worth pushing back freaking weapons and vehicles. You are making me expect a lot of things good sir, but I know better. I will wait and see it for myself when the time comes. |

What good is having good core gameplay if you have nothing where you can see it?
Also: When is the core gameplay good enough? When everything is balanced? Won't happen. Ever. Too many items, too much new stuff coming along with new patches.

What is core after all? If new game modes can be labelled as core gameplay than that's awesome, but, like I said, aiming/hit detection and other similar issues seems to be working pretty reliably now. In spite of that, they just stated that they will only expand when they feel comfortable about the core stuff, so what exactly is it that they want to improve now? That's what I'm wondering. May be pretty exciting things too you know. |

Core gameplay is a lot better than it used to be. I'd venture good enough to warrant (much) more emphasis on actual content. Like game modes. And PvE. And more maps. And a reason to play FW. And all the suits. |

I kinda think they want to balance what they currently have before adding new stuff. This way it would probably be easier to just adjust the new stuff, instead of adjusting tons of weapons all the time. |

Supposing they count it as Core than I'm happy because I'd rather have an engaging FW system, with specifics rewards, the option to pick your target district and team deploy, just to name a few things they could work upon, than getting even more weapons/suits in the next months.
Maybe they count game-modes as core too, that's why I'm asking and I'd rather have them first too. If you add too many weapons and suits at once be ready to spend some time after implementing doing balance and I believe we could still use some further work before getting there (team deployment for example), but indeed, not much. It's near now. |

That being said, I have been using the EVE-side fleet finder every single day since it was introduced. When guys type "x" in Alliance I can smugly ignore them. Now I can do the same with LFS. So what's keeping you from actually joining a game in progress? I mean, we already notice that you can indeed join mid progress, so why not join a squad in their battle so long as there is room?
What would be even cooler further in the future is to pull up your star map and see all the battles going on, then zoom in on a district and see how many players on each side and the option to join a side if there is room. |

But like I said, I wouldn't mind being surprised. Like, Amarr light frames... I.e 1.5 is now 1.6. 1.6 is now 1.7 etc. etc. etc.
1.6 is not locked yet is all what I am saying and that a simple push back that late into the previously locked patch can cause a logistical problem on delivery. Also when things get put back on the shelf or stove especially incomplete things as vehicles were not going to have many of the previous roles at first (repair and sensors where the first of two removed and not added back in if you read the dev post learly) the developers are likely going to do more work with it.
I'll try help out but here goes of a snapshot of how things are around in the studio
1.3 just launched to the customers, 1.4 is locking and going to QA, 1.5 is being actively worked on, and 1.6 is having overall design meetings on how its going to look. All in about the same week-ish. So you can imagine how pushing back a feature from one patch as large as vehicles 2.0 and weapons (they're considered large) due to the level of technical risks they introduce. Most of the work is not like other games where they simply can copy paste another gun reskin and get away with most of it. |

FW IMO is a 'Shell feature' it only affects a portion of the game and all of core will run through it.
Core is more along the lines of things that are essential everywhere, Aiming, graphics, optimization, communications and social interactions, interfacing, map generating, code support for new game mode types, ect. ect.
New guns are shell features, how guns handle, aim, shoot, and feel are more core like.
Think of every feature as a tree, the more roots that tree requires the less likely its a core item. Features that have massive number of branches are very core like. |

But in the eyes of console community and online commentary, not having the full compliment of racial suits and weapons is a glaring "wtf? the game's not even finished?" red flag.
Simple player-to-player trading is right up there with the above, but I think the above is more important than a full-fledged market economy with industry and crafting. As far as the EvE link goes, well, yes... I think that is the foundation the future of the game rests on... but I think it is much more complex to design and dev-resource intensive to implement than just dropping the rest of the suits/weapons on us. Dropsuits and weapons are what make the "pew pew" maintain some level of interest for the playerbase in the short term, and right now we have to get through the short term to survive lol.
OTOH, I'm sure they're working on all of the above |

You can't work on core gameplay or content exclusively, they both need to keep coming. Problem is if all you work on is core gameplay then there's nothing unique about the actual game, you just have generic shooter. There's plenty of FPS games out there with great core gameplay, so why would anyone want to play a game that is still working on core gameplay when it doesn't offer anything that the other games don't?
And here's what I don't get, CCP says they're not intentionally holding back racial dropsuits and vehicles, but we already have heavies and lights and tanks and dropships. How would adding the other races' version break the core gameplay? What's so different about the Amarr and Minmatar vehicles that they have to wait for core gameplay to reach perfection while it's somehow ok for the Gallente and Caldari ones to be there now? Say what you want, but I've heard nothing to convince me that CCP isn't arbitrarily holding off all this content for one grand update in the future for marketing purposes. That's fine, but be honest with it.
The lack of racial variety in a game centered around four races really irks me. /rant

Adding content into a broken core gameplay has happened before with disastrous consequences already and it shows how much of a short term memory a lot here have.
Flaylocks.
They were initially OP not because of their stats but because the core gameplay (in this case hit detection and splash damage calculation) were screwed up and not performing correctly.
Look at the reduction of time they've achieved in loading a corp member list just because they found a load of redundant coding that was holding it back. That's a perfect example of core gameplay being busted. How many 'branches' as IWS put it, will have to come off that simple mechanic, a faster way to sort out long lists of items...
Player trading Market integration with Eve Contracts Hanger contents
And those are just the ones I can think off from the top of my head. None of those would be viable in the future if you could make a cup of tea in the time it takes the game to pull the relevant data from TQ.
I think what the Dev's should do and the here CPM can help by putting pressure on them is to set out clearly and without equivocation what they define as core game play and what is content.
I think IWS's analogy of branches and roots is perfect. CCP need to tell us what they consider the 'roots' and how much work needs doing to them before the 'branches' ie the content can be added with minimal impact and potential bugs that would then waste development time being sorted.
The current monthly iteration plan with CCP working on core gameplay problems is not only the correct one, it's achieved more to fix the game in 4 point builds over three months than CCP managed in nearly a year of closed and open beta. None could disagree with that I'd hope.
Content is nice and welcome. The kid in the sweet shop part of me is pointing and salivating for it. The seasoned gamer part of me knows that unless there is a way to get those sweets from the shelf to the counter efficiently then pointing is all I'm doing. |

This is also a case where having a standings system would be nice.
Otherwise, looks like a great start.
You know for the first time in a while I LIKE your IDEA CCP.
This is exactly how is used to work in Battlefield 2 and BF2142. Make a squad and name it something fitting.
For instance
"Medic Squad Only" "Heavy Squad Only" "For the noobs 3m sp and less"
Etc ..... and as long as the squad leader polices his squad it will be everything he wants it to be.
Yea this is a good idea. Going to need the new suits and weapons though if you want people to come back to the game. |

Several communities have formed in DUST, including Drunk Night and the Learning Coalition, just to name a few. These communities span multiple Corporations and Alliances. Not having a Chat Channel option in the Squad finder will nerf these bourgeoning social groups.

You have my thumbs up and as for filters they really arent necessary like its mentioned the sqd name is free form yea anyone could ignore your stipulations but if your a squad leader there is always the remove player button. I mean filters could help possibly but at the same time it could hinder the point of the squad finder making it just as hard to get yourself into a squad as before if your a noob or starting an alt. I guess only time will tell us whether or not its a necessity, but as of now the simplicity of the squad finder is what I'm looking forward to |
