http://community.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&nbid=73406
EDIT: Going from that blog i clicked Goonswarm because i wanted to be nosey about what we've got there and see we still have a link for people to contact Vile Rat for Diplomacy. :(
Everywhere i look i see VR and it makes me sad. :( |

Definitely supporting this, my friend(who got me into EVE) was in either Vile's Alliance or Corp(can't remember) and was a huge influence on him. |

Seems fitting. Dust likely wouldn't exist without those kinds of players on EVE. |

I like this idea. I would love a suit that shut the enemies' mic off at a certain range, and back on as I left. I think that would support his sneaky side a bit and be quite hilarious :) |

TBH i feel the same way as a person I'm in an alliance with in eve. "Just another dead guy, happens all the time". Simply because if we cannot honor all we should honor none. |

Was there any word on this at all? Personally I saw what they did in EVE and was sort of like that is nice, but could have been a bit cooler? A better tribute? Anyway it was nice. I would like to see something done here in Dust514, but again if not that is fine too. |

His alliance affiliation in EVE is almost irrelevant. Had the moons been aligned differently, he may have been with some other corp or alliance. What people get a disconnect at is that even though EVE was his hobby, he contributed to the game in a very large way, regardless of corp affiliation. He wasn't some random miner or mission runner that happened to have gotten killed in a consulate. We have in this game many soldiers from many countries that fall in the line of duty and never return. This particular man helped to make the game what it is today, outside of real life duties, and outside his ingame affiliations.
Folks that log into the game and grind missions or mine for a few hours a day but do not get involved beyond that cannot possibly understand. It is no wonder that people think "Who is this guy and why is he so special?" He was not only a great asset to Goonswarm, he was an asset to us all. For Americans even more so, but Eve isn't about world politics. Within Eve, were a monument added to the server for him, it would not be for his service to country, it would be for service to Eve as a community. That service was not small.
For those too ignorant to see this at all, or have the misguided perception that all the hubbub is about GS or even the US, do some homework before making yourself look stupid. |
RIP Vile Rat

Vile Rat's diplomatic efforts are legendary by accounts, and his way of doing thing was copied by diplomats all over the cluster (and showed just how important diplomacy is in this game and how useful and necessary a tool it is for alliance and corporate leadership.)
I would hazard to say that his work has shaped much of the political dynamics of New Eden, and the universe that Dust Bunnies are about to become a full part of.
His service to his country, both as a veteran of the USAF and as an employee of the State Department, is commendable.
I would buy AUR to benefit the chairty of their choice, or his children's education for something like the aforementioned stealth/hack suit 'Rat Suit?'
Or, barring that, name either a star system after him (mentioned on the EVE forums) or a planet for him, like naming a planet 'The Rats' Nest' or something (he may have appreciated possible blue on blue space and/or ground warfare in this arrangement)

I totally support this too, and I also would like to see a Vile-Rat costume for each class here in DUST, heck you guys can also make a new ship named Vile-Rat in EVE... I don't play EVE and I never knew him but he was a gamer like everyone of us who used EVE (or any other game) as a sanctuary, and of course I will buy AUR to help his family. |

a command dropsuit seems fitting. if CCP could come up with some rousing words for the mag dropsuits then somebody should be able to come up with something subtle yet meaningful in the description for this.
"a true leader can win a battle before the first shot is ever fired" i dunno... something that alludes to the mans work, while remaining vague for the people who'd never heard of him
and i read somewhere that the goons had already set up a charitable fund for his family. if that's still open, it could funnel right to there? |

I don't plan on spending money on the game until we get some cool aur stuff *like stuff to customize my suits and clone. I like to look pretty when I'm T'bagging people <3* but i would defiantly buy all of the suits that they make for this *if they do it*. |

Dozens of eve players have died before, the game has been around for a while... it's not really fair to just randomly decide to honor one of them.

Calm down, I know what it feels like to lose someone close to you but he has a point, there's no logical reason to honor one without honoring all. That would make you feel better but for all other friends of deceased Eve players it would become an outrage of a jita-burning proportion. At that point no one would truly be happy and honestly tell me you're so self centered that you'll ignore others to make yourself feel better. |

How many of those other players did as much for EVE as VR did though? He helped forge the game into what it is today. I very, very much doubt even 1% of those other players have any impact on EVE in any significant way, let alone the level of impact VR had, he was also on the CSM and got to know the DEV's etc personally, no matter how you look at it, nobody did as much for the game as he did and died in the way he did or did as much for your country as he did.
That's the why something should be done, his EVE work, his real live work and the impact he had on New Eden. |
