This thread is being made as a request toward the community to pull together low-level ideas for Lore and Immersion in Dust 514.
To put it clearly, some things are obviously out of our scope. This thread is looking for the low hanging fruit. Ideas that can be easily accomplished with minimal development input. An example of something that could be feasible would be adding a description to the 'Brutor' Minmatar SKIN's that explain, briefly, who the Brutor are.
So rather than seeing "This SKIN only applies to Heavy Minmatar Dropsuit frames!" you would see this:
Quote:"A martial, strong-willed people, the Brutor hold their tribal heritage close to their hearts. Strong advocates of transforming the Republic into a tribal-based government, they would love nothing more than for all seven of the Minmatar tribes to reunite as one nation. The Brutor are renowned for living regimented, disciplined lives. Despite presenting a tough, no-nonsense exterior, they are deeply introspective and "in the moment", aware of even the smallest detail. Immersed in ancient martial traditions that begin at childhood, they are physically robust individuals and intimidating to face in the flesh."
An example of something that is not as valuable is something like, "I think that we should have full character customization with all the different races and blood lines" as this is a very high development goal that would pull away from other tasks with higher priority.
Any opportunity to fill in other-wise dead space with informative, immersive aspects of the Lore will be good suggestions here.
Thanks for all the support guys, let's fix Dust 514

Besides the text regarding SKINS, I would like to see more DUST lore period.
One aspect of lore I would like to see is Chronicles. Perhaps some detailing Mordu's Private Trials and Battle for Caldari Prime. Perhaps some detailing the inception of the "Immortals" long past the opening video. We were found in those stasis capsules, as shown in the video seen whenever you first boot up the game for the very first time, and in game at the bottom of the menu. How did we get put there?
I don't see DUST Chronicles being all that hard to accomplish, especially since I don't see it taking up much RAM or memory, It could be made into another tab on the menu. I would say next to the Instructions tab, but nobody ever looks there, except maybe to watch the video that brings me to tears every time.
[I am reserving this for further edits, because at the moment, I can not think of all the things lore-wise that I would love to see implemented.]

Asides descriptions that can be ripped off of EVElopedia there's few things out there.
Though, one idea I imagine is that after you get say 20M SP you get gifted a free Skin BPO based on the bloodline you chose that can be applied to all that bloodline's race. It can't be traded, and I think it gives people an incentive to role play a bit more. Give them a skin and a background, and suddenly people that would never have thought passed Faction Warfare are actually considering their bloodlines.

I support this, definitely. If we had a lot of lore and better immersion earlier on, the game would've been much more entertaining. But that's the past, lets talk about the now.
Are loading screen descriptions out of the question? I feel like this could be used to help people understand things better.
I feel like Faction Warfare could do well with this.

It is confirmed, I told you all. Skins are Dust future.
Ps. Now on topic (though it still applies ^). Any news on FW rank names? I'd rather see FW rank name next to my nick than my Aurum rank.

I'd like to add on to this by saying we could have a "news" tab in-game. Doesn't have to include videos or anything but even just texts and a picture would be good enough.

[I am reserving this for further edits, because at the moment, I can not think of all the things lore-wise that I would love to see implemented.] EDIT 1: THIS is the DUST Chronicles. There is barely any, there are only 11 entires - where EVE has well into the hundreds. There are even in-game corporations that have made it into EVE Lore, have their own Chronicles too I believe. We need this. I also do want to see lore-based descriptions for the SKINs, but I want to see this more.
The issue with getting these written is that you basically need an author to write it and then have the content vetted by the ISD Mercury Team (I think....they deal with that sort of thing) who then would submit it to CCP who would then vet it even more thoroughly before accepting it a canon.
Simply put you cannot just churn out crap and expect it to make the grade.

This is a great idea. I guarantee that 95% of the people that play this game don't even know that there are events constantly happening on EVE. Of those that know few probably check EVE World News. It would be fantastic if in the corner of my Mercenary room I had a large hologram of headline news, and when I opened it I could read it in real time, and see the news.

Adding on to this as well.
Faction Warfare events every once in a while would be fun.
If not Faction Warfare, then Special Events for the public like when we had to choose whether to fight against the Blood Raiders or help them. We can actually get Blood Raider suits now for it lol.
Or maybe a series of events that changes outcome with the actions of the players? Basically like the Caldari Prime event in how the Titan fell when the Gallente won.

I came up with a great idea that would make Factional Warfare better would be is instead of us waiting minutes to deploy. Why not select the contract that a merc wants to do. High sec would pay a normal LP payout with minimal loot.
While Low sec would pay much higher LP and Loot but that type of Low sec contract would have a price tag = That would favor those who want a great/epic.Difficult/Corp Battle type with high risk and high rewards.
Because I remember back then we had 4 to 5 contracts (battles) to select and it was useful.
I dont mind having 8 vs 8 FW battles in Low Sec with Corporations in FW = It would be just like Corp battles but only in FW.
The High,Medium, and Low sec would be limited by the Meta Levels.
I'm not sure how much Meta is for a militia, advance, and Proto everything on a dorpsuit such as,
Militia dropsuit L/M/H with Militia High/Low Moduals Militia Light/Sidearm/Heavy weapons slot, Grenade slot, and Equipment.
^ Same with Proto having everything Proto
This would drastically change the game and make new players vs new players, Casual vs Casual, and Vet vs Vet.
Not all contracts would appear for everyone. For new players only High sec would appear but that would be in Public contracts ONLY and I think Public should just be High sec. Not saying Causal and Vets can't join which they can but once FW Medium and Low sec would be the most common contracts BUT at a price of LP only.
This is just my idea so think about it for a while.

FW never takes place in High Security Space. It is exclusively a proxy war talking place in low security space for the economic benefit of the four empires. No territory is lost or gained and winning means nothing only a continuation of status quo.
What would be more appropriate for your design are

I am pretty sure we can find somebody willing to write it all up. Don't you agree that we do need some recognition? That we need this kind of lore? Hell, CCP could take a crack at the stuff that You, Raven, Breakin, Spade and Ben do. There is some literature written up right there. CCP Rattati has already expressed interest in our ideas on lore before, I am pretty sure it can be done.
Hell, I may even write up some myself.

The Caldari were confirmed to have one the ground conflict giving them leverage enough to demand concessions of the Federation resulting in Ishukone picking up the contracts to begin rebuilding on the Caldari Homeworld as well as the establishment of demilitarized zones controlled by Mordu's Legion.

Fair enough. I'm still surprised they killed her off that fast. She was a pretty interesting character, and they could have done better things. It was just such a boring way to die. It's how you would expect someone boring like Jacus Roden to die. He was supposed to be this conniving businessman, and instead everything he says is quaint and diplomatic.
In all honesty I wouldn't be surprised if they killed her off, even at the cost of plot holes, on the basis that they were behind on lore. Someone from management probably said to kill her off so they could get rolling on the event.

Yeah she was very interesting and frankly I'd have liked to have seen her develop more before her death perhaps doing something rather interesting that could have told us what kind of Empress she would have been for the Amarr....
Peacemaker and breaking the mould of the Sarum Family, or War Hero who reignites the need for the Reclaiming and starts the 25th Reclaimation....
Instead she gets hit by 95-ish Drifter Doomsdays in a cut scene without even allowing players to get stuck into a fight with the Drifters.....
Either way we will get to see the Succession Trials next year in April and the investiture of a new Amarrian Emperor (most likely a male as 4 of 5 Heirs are male).
I want Lady Catiz Tash-Murkon to claim her place as the Empress. We need an intelligent and canny leader with the vision to bring the Amarr into a new age and release it from the traditionalist tenets that prevent it from achieving it full capacity.

P.S. The Drifters didn't kill the Empress. Hubris killed the Empress.
No..... I can attest to the fact that the combined fire from almost dozens of Drifter Battleships killed the Empress.
Also for the Tash-Murkon Sentinel are you talking about the warrior Anasoma and how he was a Udorian Warrior sealed in his armour after he was betrayed and sealed in his armour.

Empress Jamyl was killed by Hubris. General Custer was killed by Arrogance. Anasoma was betrayed and melted into his own battle armor, which is certifiably badass.
What part of that does not visually correlate?

I don't think hubris is the right word.
No entity within New Eden could have expected or prevented a Fleet of 200 battleships with the newly displayed ability to fire a doomsday weapon offensively to suddenly appear. Or that their combined fire power was instantly able to overwhelm a Titans prolific defenses in a time frame that left the defending forces of the Imperial Guard without even the ability to approach before instantly disappearing.

She was killed because she had a partial link to the drifter infomorph overlord. And she was resisting it's control, doing things like distributing clean merc implants that don't cause 514 incidents. She was an imperfect tool and the more that bastard used her the more she gleaned from it.
It was an execution. That was the message the drifters sent.
We can kill whoever we want, whenever we want, however we want.
But they tipped their hand to the fact that they considered jamyl important despite spanking the amarr navy like uppity children repeatedly.

While I would really like to have better / fleshed out description to our gear, I think more lore driven events are the way to go.
We have the "special contracts" tab for a reason. It's just a shame it has not been used more (or at all apart from testing purposes). It could be just normal matches, but with some lore background reason for fighting (like investigate the portals). I would also like a small notification bubble (like the new mail / invalid Loadout) in the Neocom indicating there are custom battles available (it's way too easy to miss now).
A second point: I think all Mercs are tired of their broken TV-remote by now... My quarter have shown the same program for years. This might be out of the realm of the possible, but I would LOVE to have small clips of the Scope playing on my wall What could be better, have constant news of the universe playing in the background!
Speaking of The Scope, it would be nice if the lore masters get together and incorporate a little of Dust in their news broadcasts. Doesn't have to much (or even tighed to a Dust event... Even if it would be nice), just a sentence here and there mentioning mercenaries raiding etc. Even if it's just to remind EVE players we are still here.

I dont know how low hanging this is, but the ability to chose our avatar class on the log in screen would be pretty immersive.
Not everybody is a Scout. Have the racial Scout, Medium, Heavy avatar to pick from.
3 more racial warbarge images to choose would be also be a nice touch. Min, Galente or Amarr. I'm sure we could even have a user art contest to design a kick ass warbarge, if not just a 2D image of racially apropriate eve ship. Just add the UI in options. CCP does have the artists to make a good looking image, instead of the dissapointing one we have right now.
I know its not a war barge, but an image like this of an amarr a warship from from a cool angle is much better than our warbarge pretending to be flying through space. Toss out the animated background, put in a cooler static image of the warbarge of our racial choosing. That would be nice, simple, and give something for mercs to talk about. Hell, you could even tie in some LP booster to the ship of your choice, or have it purchasable for LP.
Removing the orange notifications for strongboxes and boosters. They are the pop up ads of dust 514. Yes i know i have boosters that i don't want to use. Yes i realize have 1900+ Strongboxes. No i don't want to spend thousands of dollars to get rid of all of then. To be fair, this is probably from the marketing department and not the dev's responsibility.
EDIT: dust needs to be more involved in EVE Lore via mini events. I couldnt care less who or what the empress was. But when the dust team, as a part of the company hears about some upcoming lore changes, it should be in the news feed for mercs, and can be reflected in mission rewards, such as mini events.
I.E Amarr empress has been killed. For the next week the Amarr empire is recruiting mercs to avenge her death.
Daily Mission have a few more amarr based rewards, and at the end of the week a 1 day Amarr FW booster. Just to make New Eden lore relevant.

You know who else died like that? That Caldari Scout I spammed to death with my Ion Pistol. SOB still came back and waited around a corner for me with a shotgun. Why? Because he was cloned just like the Empress. Let me spell it out for you. SHE WAS CONFIRMED BY A CCP DEVELOPER WHO DEALS WITH THE LORE THAT SHE IS NOT COMING BACK AND HAS DIED THE FINAL DEATH.
True, you of all people know what this means though....
I'm very surprised CCP didnt get EVE players or DUST players for that matter in on the event. That being said you and I both know this can only mean two things....
1. CCP has something much more special planned in regards to lore and event gameplay 2. CCP just gave up and cant be assed with involving players in the lore events anymore.
I would have to guess at number 1, I can't see CCP dropping what I consider one of their most successful creations. (The lore, the storyline)

True, but this time they know better, at least i hope.
I can see the Amarr going on a crusade to avenge the Empress, or like you said, all factions rampaging each other. I want an event like Prime, as in, we can actually play in it. Not just, "oh yea, this just happened, mmhm, yeap, we are going to **** you and let just the capsuleers do it; you are going to just be stuck doing same ol same old. Silly dust bunny, events are for those that matter"
BFCP may have been a wash, but that doesn't mean that it should be the end of events like those.

I am curious if any of this lore and immersion will work considering dust is a game where one team shoots another team in the face... Until pve or some other co-op mode is produced gameplay affecting lore is just a pipedream.
Unless a temporary model of drifter characters are inserted into the game for a few months and the devs set up some special contracts where we kill the devs playing drifters.

A few personal ideas I want to bring up as far as Immersion.
These might be a little higher up on the technical scale and likely cannot be implemented due to development budget constraints and performance but I'd like to throw them out there anyway.
Re-designing the Orbital Strike Effects I never understood why Capsuleers or even Warbarges would telegraph the fact that they're about to drop hellfire on the enemy (or even friendlies) with a big laser and a horn sound, so I think something a bit more subtle should be implemented. Stuff like ammo casings starting to float in the air or something akin to Akira.
Persistent Vehicle Wrecks
I'd personally like to see more utilization of persistent vehicle wrecks to be used as cover and what not. Allow them to dissipate over time or after a certain amount of damage to prevent abuse (stacking vehicles infront of a door) but I think there's a lot of merit in adding that dynamic to the game.
More Blood? Dust 514 doesn't need to be made M for Mature (although I have my fantasies) but it certainly could use a bit more visceral nitty gritty effects. Stuff like blood pools and the like to show that someone recently died there after his body has burnt away.

Aeon Amadi wrote:This thread is being made as a request toward the community to pull together low-level ideas for Lore and Immersion in Dust 514. So rather than seeing "This SKIN only applies to Heavy Minmatar Dropsuit frames!" you would see this: Quote:"A martial, strong-willed people, the Brutor hold their tribal heritage close to their hearts. Immersed in ancient martial traditions that begin at childhood, they are physically robust individuals and intimidating to face in the flesh." An example of something that is not as valuable is something like, "I think that we should have full character customization with all the different races and blood lines" as this is a very high development goal that would pull away from other tasks with higher priority. Any opportunity to fill in other-wise dead space with informative, immersive aspects of the Lore will be good suggestions here. I'd like the Title system being something that really means something to the player, especially to FW guys.

I'm a fan of that I like [Sergeant] Sgt Kirk :D.Depending on how Rattati responds to more titles in-game I'd like to shoot him some ideas to boot back up the possibility of FW ranks, if not for every rank every other rank. I'd like the Title system being something that really means something to the player, especially to FW guys. We have no friends after all. My only friend is the federation. Indeed, i figured it would be a very small work-load that could possibly add a deep level of immersion into your character.
But i fear CCP trying to cash in on it and make titles AUR puchasable - but how cool would it be if you could use LP to purchase special faction titles?

The LP Titles shouldn't be bought with LP either because you already earned it by reaching that level.
If someone got 612 wins to get to level 10 for a Faction they fully deserve the title they are given by their own merit.

If I could throw in my two cents on Immersion factors, I would suggest making the corps you fight for in Public Matches be a bit more focused, and help drive a "player-centric" lore angle that is so important to New Eden.
To do this I would propose the following steps:
Reduce the number of corps that can be "drawn" as the Attacker and Defender to a much smaller pool. (For instance, only Quafe, Core Complexion, and Effir And Co)
Potentially differ these pools by game type. (So different corporations will be drawn for attacker and defender in Acquisition than in Skirmish)
Keep track of which corp wins and which corp loses. (As far as we know CCP already keeps a track of win / losses for matches, so adding a collection metric based on the actual corps should not be too difficult)
Finally, add in some lore snippets and news based on weekly / monthly statistics, with a bit of lore explaining why Quafe is so fevered about hiring mercenaries to go kick the teeth in of Core Complexion, with these news segments including some data on win / loss ratios, and "MVPs" who were essential in the operations.
Even potentially tie in some rewards or store items based on these outcomes. (Example, Quafe suits going on sale, or Core Complexion introducing a new SKIN)
The idea here is to make the world feel more alive by having lore created around player action, rather than lore being independent of player action. Having those corp tags pop up on public matches should give players a reason to care about them. The idea has a low impact development cost (as it mostly involves slimming down the possible pool of corps to pull from when making contract sides and keeping track of metrics we likely already have) And the lore / news updates do not have to be that involved or frequent. (Weekly at max, monthly at min)

(Weekly at max, monthly at min) This is a good thought, and viable from the looks of it.
however, limiting the amount of corps on one side will only leave many more games half emptied. The best solution here is to give another reason for players to leave NPE corps and into player corps, and then reward them for being in squad together. Or one or the other.
Right now you'd leave the NPE corps to avoid taxes, but that's not a reason to actually build a corp. And attempting PC requires a strong foothold in the game, which you won't get for nearly half a year.
So, there needs to be a different incentive entirely to make players want to find each other, form corps that focus on FW and team play.
I suggest squads that win a game send the corp some kind of extra reward depending on squad size, ISK or CP or some such thing. Preferably CP rewards, so smaller corps can focus on elite players that play a lot rather then an army of scrubs. People not wearing corp tag in squad would not count to the bonus added, they'd act like an empty slot. |

Maybe an in-game link to the Evelopedia, at the very least. Is it actually possible to link the game to an internet browser? No, but at least people would know where to look.
There should be a section in the Neocome where all of the EvE's lore is stored to go through, i'd love to see it all organized in-game so we can fully understand wtf we're fighting for. But i understand it's a huge story, spanning many books. A site address is better then nothing, haha. |

CCP doesn't have to go crazy making new assets, just give us some text and an agenda and let us pick sides for the duration.
Hell they could be their own events.
E.G
Amarr + Caldari Assault on Minmatar + Gallente outlying systems. Give us a bit of lore about the who and the why's and then let us pick a side or something I dont know. It is probably best to start moving away from Allied thinking as I suspect very very soon that the four factions are going to start fighting against each other. I hope it is going to be another event like Battle for Caldari Prime. I doubt it. Caldari Prime took eight months to organize and it took both teams working cohesively to make happen. For what was only a few hours, that is an insane amount of dev budget to utilize. Silly dust bunny, events are for those that matter" BFCP may have been a wash, but that doesn't mean that it should be the end of events like those. And VAHZ makes a good point - to those who do follow the lore, any edition or nod to the matter-of-fact in game that it happened would go a long way in bringing players into the EvE universe. A news section for latest updates on EvE lore, for instance. Or maybe the TV could flicker to a small news report using an EvE face and a typed report we can look at. Not sure how viable that is, though.
But the TV itself could turn into a menu that could act as an encyclopedia for news, updates on FW and PC, etc. It's weird that it's the market.... |

Eh, maybe not so much. Missions in Eve Online aren't considered lore-canon because there's only so many times you can save the damsel in distress before the world starts to question why she keeps getting kidnapped all the time anyway. Likewise, the Quafe corporation can only hire so many mercenaries to protect their assets before they go bankrupt. You gotta kinda wonder why the hell a soft-drink needs so much security anyway.

A fair point, seeing as in EVE I've had to do that dumb mission God knows how many times I've had to that mission.
Still, some lore based on answering why Quafe seems to have such a well stocked armory of personalized suits, and employs mercenaries so frequently might be some interesting lore.

They're pretty diverse, actually. When the Gallente and the Amarr were quarreling over the development rights to a certain star system they were about to go into full blown war until the Quafe corporation stepped in to play diplomat. The reason being was because the Quafe corporation, selling their product to both the Gallente and the Amarr, were the only truly neutral state that could advise with interest in the better outcome.

Late to the party, but better late than never. I'd love love love to see some hard critical lore written down on DUST 514, and it was always my dream to work with a team like Mercury from the start of this title to help lay down the foundation of what constitutes the daily lives and abilities of our soldiers. (Which by this point is a pipe dream, I doubt Mercury ever even looks at the dust forums... Though if they did I just want to let you know that I would still very very much like to help in any capacity that I can.)
The major issue this far in has been that due to a lack of critical input the DUST community has had to make our own sort of universe for our characters to inhabit. Things like the separation between combat and leisure clones, how CRUs work, even the chemical make-up of our cloned bodies and functionality of our weapons have been largely invented and shared between the people who haunt the IGS forum.
So far we can only suspect that CCP takes a moderate interest in what roleplayers do based on the extremely limited tongue-in-cheek additions to suit names, but I'm afraid that for CCP to ever bring in regulars from the EVE Mercury team to write down some concrete DUST lore they'd have to do a lot of research about what the roleplay community can AGREE ON before they end up writing something that contradicts or even breaks the storyline of a lot of characters in new Eden like myself, Denak, and True.
The hard truth is that's probably impossible to do since (due to the lack of concrete lore) agreed upon lore shared by DUST mercenaries is never posted on a recorded medium. None of this written any encyclopedia for us to share and reference. It's just based on shared fanfiction that occasionally crosses paths or coincides. Unless CCP spent the time making sure we have EVERY experienced DUST roleplayer sitting in place communicating with Mercury to law down concrete material, then it will be extremely hard to make a universe that fits our characters without having the EVE side capsuleers having the run of our stories. (Bad idea.)
Honestly, and I really can't stress this point enough, DUST 514 needs to have our own volunteer version of Mercury that works closely with Mercury and the CPM to create an accurate representation of immortal soldiers in New Eden. Whether that is based on some sort of writing contest or just based on community consensus, I really can't say.

If CCP worried much about lore we wouldn't have something like a CRU or supply depot or drop uplinks. All those things are just way too fantastical even for New Eden. They exist for economy of game play. Be thankful CCP actually even provided the explanation they did.
Even in EVE the reason we see our ships in third person is due to a camera floating around the ship.

So we should just maintain the status quo and be accepting of this total lack of solid information? Even though the entire point of this thread is to explore ways of filling in these blanks? Even though a volunteer DUST lore team working with CCP Mercury is a very rational (and most importantly free) option to help create better lore and immersion?
Sorry, but I can't accept that. I really do think that New Eden deserves better, and I know plenty of people that would be overjoyed to help make what I suggest a reality.

We're mercenaries. Independent contractors. Like Boba Fett, we use whatever. However, I don't like that something like the RR which is supposed to facilitate a Cal suit operating at long range due to shield weakness is totally thrown off-balance when a Gal in a heavy suit uses it at CQ.
Or, a heavy suit is sitting on the objective wih a shotgun.
For this reason I really think weapons should be made inherently weak and have the suits add the racial appropriate fire power and maybe, also have weapons modules to boost capabilities if using off racial weapons.
There should be some kind of limitation or drawback and a choice must be made when using suit weapon combinations.

We could just hit the backstage forums and skype and do that **** ourselves..... y'know establish a relatively believable baseline and capabilities for our kind as well as the more generic technological aspects such as clone maintenance, etc.
Perhaps if we do a good enough job we can submit it to Mercury who can take it from there.

Immersion is subjective to the player. A lot of players said that Myofibrils were immersion breaking but I always laugh at that because... well, best to just explain it.
We're 23,000 years in the future. We have ships that can warp through planets, jump entire solar systems in the blink of an eye, we can transfer our consciousness instantly from one clone to the next - which in itself, cloning is a miracle. So when someone says, "Oh that dude jumping on top of that big crate there breaks immersion" I think that they must have a very, very confined imagination and really just trying to find a way to say, "I just don't like it" that can't be argued against as easily.
It's science fiction. Which, even though it is science fiction, the devs stated at one point many years ago that Eve Online doesn't operate on Newtonian Physics. So the only thing that's really immersion-breaking is if they up and decided you can start shitting out fireballs and using mana or some BS but even -THAT- is up for debate because Jamyl apparently is freaggin telepathic, though that may be due to her implants (if any) more than 'magic'.
As an example: The only thing immersion breaking about Myo's is that they're a blue bottle of apparent biotic juice. If they had called Myo's "Hydraulic Leg Enhancement Donkey Kickers" no-one would question their immersive capabilities, they'd just accept that there is something mechanical that makes you jump higher.

It was interesting to see Mizhara post a 'It's almost like magic' fiction challenge on the Backstage forums..... got me thinking that yeah my typical defaults are set to believable story telling even though our characters exist in such a rich science fiction world.
I'm working on developing some more fantastic elements for my New Eden story telling atm.

I don't see DUST Chronicles in-game being all that hard to accomplish, especially since I don't see it taking up much RAM or memory, It could be made into another tab on the menu. I would say next to the Instructions tab, but nobody ever looks there, except maybe to watch the video that brings me to tears every time. I want to see more out-of-game, but maybe only a few can be put in-game, like the Inception of the Immortals.
Thanks for this...I've been playing on and off for 2+ years, and I didn't know who the hell folks like Rodin, Gatsun, etc. were...And I was too afraid to ask...

AGREED! AGREED!. I would add, that you place part of this paragraph (the history part that may change from time to time) onto the Video Monitor of our Merc Quarters.
Leave the rest of the paragraph (the part that gives solid info about Faction descriptions, weapons/gear etc) in the "loading" screen you're envisioning.

Can you take excerpts from the most current "EVE Community World News Feed" from the Eve Community site, and post them on the Video Screen of our Merc Quarters?
This will make the living quarters a "living part" of our New Eden Lore connection, and will even snag some Dust players into becoming interested in EVE Online.
The posted News feed would not have to contain the ENTIRE paragraph of news from the World New article, and if it's easier for CCP, update the video screen article only when each new Patch Update or Hotfix is implemented.

A few of the past videos CCP produced actually give a good showcase of the Race-driven differences between combat styles, the intrigue of certain characters like Sarrum, and Keulvaki (...I know, lousy spelling.).
Many of the Newberry players I've met in-game don't even know these videos exist. They were blown away by the famous "Origins" video I linked them to.

Rather than always fighting for some random entity against some other random entity on some random planet, have ongoing wars between two well defined sides, in a single system or constellation. Each war should last a few days or weeks, and there should only be a handful of wars going on at once.
At the start of each war, post a brief summary of the background - preferably in-game, but maybe just on the forums.
At the end of the war, another post to say what the outcome was, preferably driven in some way by the actions of the players.
