I actually want to know, because wearing a cloak in this game gives you about as much invisibility as wearing black clothes and laying in the middle of the street. If you think that's OP then you should rethink your Dust career, or get your eyes checked.

I die all the time while cloaked and standing still so as not to attract attention.
Obviously some people in this game get it.

vs good players i find they're good for either waiting in a strange spot, flanking them or for escaping when **** hits the fan.
if they're looking your direction they'll almost always see you if you're moving, and you've got like a 25% chance that they'll miss you that first time if you're peaking out behind a corner.
they're not that good tbh.. it just helps scouts sneak up on people and tanks in sahara desert 514 and hide behind a crate or some random **** when they run away in a city.\
vs everyone else... how can someone complain about scouts when they can't even see tanks? |

True, but that pretty much describes spawn camping. I equally hate it when you spawn in and there are 1 or heavies waiting.
I usually die to cloaked players who have managed to flank or get behind me. The cloak is fairly easy to see but useful when used in conjunction with cover. A number of times scouts have managed to evade by using cover or jumping of the bridge etc. |

I was running after a buddy today (we q'synced a public match and our squads were on opposite sides) and he ran around the corner, cloaked and then (unbeknownst to me) ran back out of cover and up the hill to the left of me, I didn't see him and ran behind the cover shooting like a mad man at every single damn pixel I could see on my screen, then he just shottified me in the back of the neck severing my spinal chord and rendering me terminated
He told me i maybe need to turn up the brightness on my TV but I think i'm just really bad at picking them out when there's a lot of movement on-screen.

You see, with age a human beings eyes get worse. The lens of the eye gets thicker making it less flexible and thus not able to focus clearly, especially with close up objects. Additionally we lose photoreceptors within the macula lutea (responsible for high acuity vision) over time.
In other words, my old blind ass can't see cloaked scouts . I may try the brightness setting though and see if it helps but my vision is pretty crappy so I'll always be screwed, that doesn't explain for the rest of the player base though.

Another responsibility for not being able to see scouts is the framerate issues. Sometimes just scanning the horizon gives me a headache so a lot of the time I don't bother.
The other one is that they are behind you, and you can't possibly have seen them and given that they dampen an already hard to detect suit, that compounds the issue. |

There is always one mood that it is really difficult for me to see cloaked scouts. It's the desert mood in the midday. I have tried adjusting brightness, but I still have a very hard time seeing cloaks in that light. It's just my TV I guess.
I literally cannot even see a shimmer of the cloak.
I have no problem with cloaks still.

So... Cloaks aren't really that good, since anyone looking at the screen with their eyes can see them. They should be removed from the game until we get them to where they do what is advertised.

It is always fun though to be running along while cloaked and see another cloaked scout around you on your screen. If the other guy sees you it becomes a thing of who can get in better position first and fire quicker. Always kind of a rush.

If I'm actively looking for scouts, and that is to say, if I'm not dealing with anyone/thing else at any given moment, then yes, cloaks are not a real issue, although I'd like to say that between the shimmer and the tiny size of a light frame it can be hard to keep a consistent aim on them.
The real issue is when I'm doing something. Anything. Scouts are so damned fast they can cover an exceptional amount of distance to get to you, and if you ADS in a firefight right now it's a flip of the coin as to whether you'll get a shotgun to the back of the head or not.
I'm used to it now, but it still irritates me. Feels exceptionally arbitrary.

Muzzle flash on minmatar weapons makes it hard to keep track of the player.
Dimmed Light blue chevrons/tanks/CRUs behind the scout make it hard to concentrate on the exact color of the cloak, making it hard to see as well.
Honestly I think the main problem is the sound. If someone stands right next to you and de-cloaks, the sound is barely audible compared to gunfire, RDVs, heck even the background game ambience. The sound on de-cloak was supposed to be a balancing factor so that if a player decloaks right behind you, you'll know about it.
Finally, it's disorienting to play a FPS where the only way to move your head is to move your entire body. Unless you're standing still, looking in the same direction, or have your sensitivity set to max in order to reduce the amount of time you spend "turning", it's almost impossible for your eyes to spot the difference between motion blur and a cloak shimmer.
And to top it off, if I do end up seeing a scout, and I do shoot at them as they're coming at me, and I do manage to fire at them for 10 seconds, they still don't die because they also have 500-600 ehp. Trying to stay on target while your muzzle flash gets in the way, or while there's a huge group of blue dots in the background, or while the person runs right past you disorienting you because of the limits of a 2D perspective FPS...makes it so that unless I'm focusing REALLY hard, I will probably end up dying by the scout 50% of the time.
Use my eyes? Get my eyes checked? Keep situational awareness? It's all excuses for the cloak creating an unfair fight and you/me/every other scout knows it. The disadvantage of the shotgun is range. The cloak eliminates that issue, and the main balancing factors for the cloak (i.e. sound and not firing from de-cloak) are currently broken, causing all of the problems that people keep complaining about.
It's a fair fight if you sneak up behind me, de-cloak, and I see a red-dot blip on the radar because of my precision for about a second before you're able to start firing on me. It's a fair fight if you de-cloak too close to me and the sound made by the cloak gives me the chance to run around and face you. It's a fair fight if you have to use dampeners and you de-cloak 10+ meters away from me in order to insta-kill me with a suit that has almost no hp at all. It's a fair fight if I watch my back all the time and am able to kill you within seconds because I spotted you.

I think that the real benefit come in when your opponent isn't directly facing you.
If you are far away and they are focused on near-term action, or you are cloaked but in their periphery the eyes are just not drawn as easily to you as they would be if you weren't cloaked.

The entire "fair fight" perception is invalid because of the way the game works: unfair tactics are the name of the game. If I attack a heavy who has an HMG from 300m away with a Sniper Rifle, then it could be considered an unfair fight by your reasoning, because they never have the chance to kill me. There are countless examples like that where unfair tactics are simply the tactics that are used by default.

Trying to stay on target while your muzzle flash gets in the way, or while he jumps around like crazy, or while there's a huge group of blue dots in the background, or while the person runs right past you disorienting you because of the limits of a 2D perspective FPS...makes it so that unless I'm focusing REALLY hard, I will probably end up dying by the scout 50% of the time.
I only use the CR, SMG and Flaylock. I use the Minmatar Assault. I have never not been able to see a cloaked scout that was in my vision, and if I did then they did not attack me. I highly doubt the Cloak is OP. I have only been killed by people using the Cloak twice, and they were both from the back and so it could be done without a cloak.
There's fair and then there's CCP can't add anything to the game with out some aspect of it being game breaking fair. There is a difference.

If they do any nerfing to the cloak - at least make it real cloak INVISABLE! because all the QQ and the fact its not a real cloak will make it useless and nerf scouts back to 1.7 which is 100% bad in the new world of 1.8 heavy suits! |

I've been abusing the cloak + SG combo lately and what I can tell is that it makes shotgunning easymode. In 1.7 there were beast shotgun scouts who relied on tactics and flanking an enemy from behind or else if they were seen they were dead so they played smart.
in 1.8 with a cloak all that is needed is about a 30-40 degree angle on an enemy to remain unseen. Sure if you run head on at an enemy while cloaked they'll see you but with the cloak its just a joke. Before you had to actually come in from behind or at the side of an enemy so you stayed off their screen giving you about 180 degrees to work with, now with a cloak its more like 300 degrees to work with especially since people are focused on the center of the screen not the edges which takes out all of the skill required in tactically flanking.
Cloaks do nothing really for actual shotgunners from 1.7 who learned how to properly flank, but it does is make it easy for bad players who would get destroyed trying to run a SG in 1.7 which is why its OP, trust me I sucked with a SG pre 1.8 but with a cloak I put up 30-40 kills a match... easymode .

The cloak shimmer while moving is at medium-long range still a huge advantage. When you are much harder to spot then your chance of survival is much higher. And i use it at its full potential if im closing in at enemys and they are about to turn their point of view into my direction i stop moving. Knowing when to move is key but knowing biology is aswell handy.
In real life we dont have such super cloaking technology yet so we use camouflage to blend in with the enviroment. You would be surprised how many people would walk past a guy who is perfectly hidden with a gun ready to fire. A player who has high situational awareness and knowledge of the game mechanics can get great results with a cloaked scout.
You have to play as predator, attack the weakest link in a party and do hit and runs. No direct confrontation which means you should attack from the side or from behind. Or if you see a group coming your way then you stand still and chill till they got past you, afterwards you do cherry picking on the guys from behind. Sure there are aswell moronic players who just jump on you with remote explosives but usually they fail 8 out of 10 times.

As you said we are not invisible we are camouflaged and in this regard the cloaks works as intended...
BTW anyone using a cloak without using cover is rather stupid and easy prey, I have killed quite a lot of cloaked suits that believed no one can see them and no they didn't appear on my tac net but I could see their shimmer and started shooting. I can see cloaks easily from 100 meters away even when they are standing completely still. I have perfect situational awareness and am amazing. Only two people have ever snuck up on me because Of my eyes in the back of my head, and because yes I am that awesome. Did I tell you guys how awesome I am? So awesome. I get to fire at people when they can't even see me, You can't fire while cloaked Quote:making me finally go positive on my KDR. my KDR is still negative when using cloakQuote: LOL 1,000 free damage and you can do nothing... hahahahahahaha.
It's probably because I run a basic Minie Knife/ScP(sometimes a rail rifle instead) scout, but I can't fit both Shield Extenders/Armor plates, AND a Cloak. I can tell you that almost every time I try to use cloak to approach someone, I die. The only thing I can use cloak for is to run across an open area without getting hit by a sniper. I play with my music (also includes BG sounds that do not make sense in exchange for a more lonely feeling game) slider at 2/100, effectively making most of what I hear just what I need to hear. I if another scout de-cloaks anywhere near me, I'll hear him, but my gun game is just awful so I'll shoot at him and maybe hit him once (admittedly my accuracy is so awful that even if they were an Assault I'd miss). I can also see most cloaks that cross my sight, but my gun game again prevents me from hitting, and as someone else said it tends to be a race to cover followed by a duel with whatever med-range weapons we each have available. Really, I'm better off just equipping some modules and better weapons instead. So turn down your music slider if you can't hear a scout de-cloak (seriously it is pretty loud with the music down). Come back if that doesn't work, and we can see if we can find out why it worked for me and not someone else. |

Erm that depends completely on how big of a firefight the cloak is used in, lighting conditions on the map (certain lighting makes the blue shimmer less visible than during others), range, how much the scout is moving around etc.
Also, it's an undeniable fact that countering people who use cloaks require a heck of a lot more player skill, than using a cloak requires. Any scrub can cloak up and use shotguns in peoples backs, but knowing what to look for and anticipate how a cloaked scout is going to move isn't something anyone picks up after a minute... |

They should be removed from the game until we get them to where they do what is advertised. They are still a lot better than crouching in a corner, and you are less likely to be noticed when crossing open ground, particularly if people are distracted. Cloaks are not OP, but that does not mean they are not useful. And the reduction to your signature does help when sneaking up behind people.

Since 1.8 I can only remember one time being bamboozled by a cloak. I was engaged in a fight with a cloaked minmatar scout who was busy stabbing blue dots around the objective, and I killed him twice. He came back and I saw him come up the steps, I backed up a bit to broaden my field of view, somehow he managed to slip out of ny sight and stab me from the side of the wall I was hugging. Now I watched predator maybe 1000 times as a kid, so the mind of the average cloaked is beneath my situational awareness, but that's the one scout who made me jump. The rest of them I'm like or they were insomuch a position they would have killed me cloaked or not.

I particularly enjoyed the comment that "even snipers can see the cloaks!"
If i had all day to stare at the open parts of the map like a diamond broker, I'd see cloaks too. However, I'm to busy trying to actually get work done to gaze fixedly looking for blue blurs and ripples.

I'm generally fine with them, but they are occasionally completely invisible at full sprint on certain moods/maps. Chalk it up to poor testing or optimization, but they are. No shimmer, sometimes not even the transparent ripple of non-sprint. Then again, I've had rocks and crates fail to render when aiming down sights 30m away, watched them pop in when in hipfire, then watched them DE-render when ads'ing again. Stuff sometimes not working is Dust working as intended. |

People are ... not smart.
Cloaks work as intended - they sort-of hide you, if you play smart.
Someone standing perfectly still is visible, if you know to look for them. Someone walking is visible. Someone sprinting is visible.
Meanwhile, people don't look, people are too busy shooting (and getting shot at), and people are too focused on whatever they intend to do next - Are the same reasons I could run around inside a group of enemies, with my scout BEFORE 1.8 was released, and pick them off 1-by-1, same reasons people get RE'd both at installations and in the middle of the field, and same reason you can fly a dropship up next to an enemy nest and kill them all with missiles.
All that said, the idiot bluedot yesterday, who was running around the Domination objective, while it was being hacked by a cloaked scout, not shooting the scout, but getting in the way of my shots ... that is just being useless!

Do you run around the map looking for cloaked scouts standing still? I mean, when an objective is being taken or needs to be taken, are you running aroudn the area looking for claked scouts standing still? Every time you turn a corner, are you looking for them as well?

I mean, when an objective is being taken or needs to be taken, are you running aroudn the area looking for claked scouts standing still? Every time you turn a corner, are you looking for them as well? If the objective is blinking and being hacked, no, I shoot and kill the cloaked scout by spreading bullets. Do I take an extra look, if the cloaked-scout-effect (yes, there is one for perfectly-still cloakers) shows up, or something similar catches my eye? yes. Do I just run blindly at the objective and start hacking? Some times, but just as often I stop and look around for REs and scouts - and occasionally I catch a hiding scout and murder him/her. Do I look carefully every time I turn a corner? No, but if I have reason to suspect there being a cloaker, I'll be careful....
I guess what I'm saying, mr Ydubbs81 RND, is some of us don't run around mad and blind.

If you have good eyesight and your TV is actually set up properly for gaming, the closest I've had an actually invisible Scout - EVEN WHEN THEY'RE STANDING STILL - is closer to 50m than 40m. |

Peeps just depend on their Tacnet/chevron crutch too much. Many times I'll just turn the corner cloak up and then they come after me like 'where'd they go?' an often bump right into as they walk past. Some I dunno if desperate or just smarter than usual will start spraying in possible spots I could be hiding, but unfortunately for them I'm like the ghost in Mario and will go hide in the spots they've just checked.

everyone knows this is a lie. I dont even need evidence as anyone can just go into match and check it himself.
but anyway, just to reveal your true form Garrett Blacktroll https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3Lfy7J1c4I => non moving scout, invisible at 14m, slightly visible at full sprint 15m away on a darker area. then he sprints further 15m away and you could not see him anymore till he jumped into a different light level where the transition revealed him. yeah your "EVEN WHEN THEY'RE STANDING STILL - is closer to 50m than 40m" story is very realistic and credible
another one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSBICx2yyZo => full sprint cloaked scouts, invisible at around 50m ranges, the range you claim you can "see" scouts standing still. fun fact: you would not even notice them if there were no shadow thrown on the ground by terrain for a color transition or when you would not see them cloaking beforehand.
I am not saying to change that, I am just saying that this is something you cannot see and your brightness and color depth setting on the TV will not change that. personally I would just remove the extra dampening on cloaks because this makes the profile damps scale through the roof. damps already give a bigger bonus than enhancers thus the counter is already inherently weaker. a caldari scout needs 4 proto precision enchancers to see a cloaked scout with 2 proto damps. |

Even on my laptop screen where I can't adjust the colour and contrast settings to where I'd have them on my TV, they're visible.
Quote:another one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSBICx2yyZo => full sprint cloaked scouts, invisible at around 50m ranges, the range you claim you can "see" scouts standing still. fun fact: you would not even notice them if there were no shadow thrown on the ground by terrain for a color transition or when you would not see them cloaking beforehand. There's one example in Judge's video where at around 50m, a sprinting cloaked Scout is in an absolutely perfect environment for the cloak to be as hard to see as possible, and is really hard to see with intermittent periods of actual invisibility, and that appears to be a bug which occasionally occurs with sprinting Scouts where the shimmer effect doesn't register.
Since, as I keep saying, BUGS AREN'T RELEVANT TO A BALANCE DISCUSSION, that "point" you're trying to make is pointless. I've so far been fortunate enough not to run into anyone exploiting that glitch outside of point-blank range, by which point I'm already close enough to see them quite easily even without the shimmer. But yes, I am willing to accept that - WHEN EXPLOITING GLITCHES, some cloaked players are doing things they shouldn't be able to do within the confines of the cloak's intended operation.
Judge's video also shows him referring to his 4th screenshot at the end, pointing out how the cloaked Scout is "completely invisible" while pointing an arrow to the wrong part of the screen when the ACTUAL Scout is plainly visible to someone who knows what they're looking for on the opposite side of the crosshairs to where he's pointing. |
