I miss the old style turrets. Nothing was cooler than getting into your recliner of rage and just mopping the floor with people. Better yet was a desperate last stand trying to pop the MCC with one before it docked. I can't count the battles I pulled out at the last second because I found a large railgun still active and started pounding on the MCC. Many hearty lols were also given at the swarm launcher, that dumbfire + splash damage was so ridiculous. |

Kristoff Atruin wrote:Something else interesting to point out here is that this was way before hit detection was fixed. During this video half of his bullets that connected were doing no damage, which was a big reason for all the dancing in the big fights. Before they figured out how to fix the problem they started compensating by increasing the damage of things until people were mostly satisfied with how long it took to kill someone. That's why the damage of almost everything is being brought down in 1.8. Infact not just before HD was fixed, but a whole new engine behind that. Could be wrong here, it's been awhile but that's what i recall. Also, it was a long time between release of the new engine and HD actually being fixed.
In fact, i'm not convinced HD is fixed, thinking its more like it has an inch-thick layer of Aim Assist slathered, like cheese whiz on toast, over top of it. Mmmmm....cheese whiz. Made for the undiscerning masses, just like our gungame.

Take a bit of your time and watch this all the way through. Forget the sub-par graphics and the occasional frame-drop, and just look at things like how the character moves, the way the HUD responds to movement, and how the weapons look as they fire.
Also take some time to listen to the sound of your character's movement, and the sound of the weapons and other aspects of the environment.
In the case of these elements, the love we profess is NOT just nostalgia. Look at this footage and tell me that many aspects of it aren't better than what we have now.
WOW, that looks amazing.
What in the HELL were they thinking. They had it right there (minus that huge TTK). It would seem to me they have been going ever backwards with dust development.

Skirmish 1.0 was such an incredibly fun game mode, and actually made sense because there were attackers and defenders, unlike the poorly thought out neutral points and installations we suffer with now. |

The thing that really gets me is how concert the mode's set up is,it's a simple Attack and Defence game with many routes to engagment, small battles occuring on the map with more intensity in them because of how everyone was being funneled, along with good pacing from rocky terrain to end in CQC battle in the outpost,it felt like a good experince,it felt right.
A strange game.
The only winning move is
not to play.

HOLY............
So this is skirmish 1.0!! I've seen videos of previous builds but never this one. Now I understand what the frustration is about concerning what we have now. In all honesty I was going to glance through view the vid an chalk this thread up as more nostalgia but after seeing this, hearing it...hell I was amped by the soundtrack alone!
What happened how does this look like a more finished game than this build. it should be the opposite. What happened to the moving MCC's and those turrets, the HUD, the terminals, hell the atmospheric effects, effects in general. I've never seen those power cells in the city glow such a beautiful green like that (why not). I've seen some of those assets online but thought they would be added in later I had no idea that at one time they were already in the game an removed, CCP nailed some of this stuff already why the back track.
That map style is exactly what is missing from maps right now too many bowls not enough dynamic cover. An what happened to the floating health bars on allies currently you can run around corners and shoot at your team mates because it doesn't want to show who is who fast enough. If you took that build added some of the current additions, weapon updates an sound changes, sky maps, facilities, graphic updates, etc, this game would look alot different.
P.S. Please don't tell me that the warbarge had a graphic representation of the ground layout before you dropped as well.

I remember being one of the first people to start dropping Remote Explosives next to the "Defense Terminals" bypassing the need to hack them altogether... Points A and B were fully destructible! Then the 3 defense points would open up at the back of the map.

Damn ive played that much DUST i forgot how it was
That HUD is like you are in your chara helmet as you move about so does the hud
The weapon used to have a blue holo sight i miss to this day
When the guy jumps off the side of the cliff he barely takes any dmg
Shield regen was near instant on the suit
AI voice was pretty good too and useful
LOOK AT THAT RADAR IT WORKS
Map was fairly big and had a number or routes
Kill sound was nice
Overall sound and even the theme was nice
Enemy had nice clear hp bars
Then super laggy compound
100% hp values i did prefer tbh insteald of various numbers, it means that a basic suit or proto would read whatever % it had

the music got really annoying, the graphics sucked (only because it was in beta), and i hate the announcer voice. i like it now because it is more futuristic. the old one reminds me of the voice i heard when i took those annoying FEMA certification courses.
i like the old assault rifle sounds and the old skirmish mode made alot more sense than the current one. and bring back the small blaster turret installations CCP. it makes no sense y they arent in the game. just about every FPS gam ehas its own version of anti-infantry turrets except this one, currently.

I've never been a fan of sprint sway, but the HUD,and especially the minimap was light years better than what we have now.
Most importantly, the one thing I liked more in that build is that your gun was actually in frame when you were ADS,something that was taken out in the following build, and has never made much sense to me.
That map was awesome.Lots of outdoor cover while still being multitiered and open. Tanks were at a disadvantage, which I won't complain about, but they were still effective back then.
Most importantly, the MCC could take damage from rail and missile turrets. If you were lucky enough and could fire on the MCC the entire match, you could blow that thing out of the sky before it could dock.
This is all proof that this game is,and now in hindsight, has always been heading in the wrong direction. |

Small Installations would be a really nice feature to have back. Hopefully we can get those when we finally get the ability to call in installations of our own.

To be fair that game mode was pretty unbalanced, depending on the general SP level of the players in the game one side would always win. At low levels of SP the defenders would nearly always win hands down, due to terrain and railgun installations shooting the MCC.
At higher levels of SP it was literally impossible for the defenders to win. It isn't shown in this video, but the attacker win conditon is the MCC reaching the facility at the other end of the map, and it doesn't start moving until those first two objectives were destroyed. Incidentally, something I really like about this is that there isn't a progress bar that shows the attackers how close they are to winning. If you wanted to know how close you were you had to look up in the sky. Anyway the problem at high levels of SP is that an attacking tank would two-shot each defense relay, making it utterly impossible to kill the MCC before it docked. One player could make it so that the attacking team could kick their feet up at the rear line, have a drink and collect their win.
All the same it was still a shitload of fun. I'd really enjoy it if they brought it back. |
