One thing that has been bothering me for a long time now, is getting hit by a sniper and having absolutely no idea where the shot came from. All I see is my health instantly drop, and every now and then I get lucky and move to a spot that is actually out of their view.
I don't know if the HUD hit-markers even show up when being hit by a sniper, cause even if I am anticipating being shot, I still manage to miss it. The only tell I have is "Oh, my health just dropped a **** load, sniper!"
HUD hit-markers showing the direction of the shot need to be improved drastically. Either by staying on the screen longer so I can actually see it before it disappears, and/or by making it more visible/obvious. As it is now, I might as well be battling an invisible player that can take me out in 1-2 seconds shooting invisible rounds that make no noise. |

As a scout, i'm dead after the first shot so I never really got a chance to witness this lol. I suppose that would explain why, when I choose to snipe, I snipe a guy and they sometimes would back up a few inches and stop.... even though I'm behind them.

I expect the devs will talk about visual 'noise' if the hit indicators are made more visible.
What if the obviousness of the hit indicator is proportional to the amount of damage you've taken from that direction in the last half a second or so? |

If you've been OHK'd, you've most likely been shot in the head. There shouldn't be a hit indicator. A hit indicator shows that you've been hit, you know where you've been hit, and you can calculate the general trajectory of the shot. Your clone has no clue what happened. You died a swift and painless death. |

to make this more effective if a sniper hits us but doesnt kill us....he should light up bright red on the minimap...

Terrible idea, the entire point of sniping is to be in a location where the enemy won't find you, if they did this, it'll be worst for everyone. How? Every time theres a sniper he/she uses a charge based variant this gives you time to move since theres a 3 second delay between full charge shots. Your idea would give veterans like me to use a standard model Ishukone Sniprr Rifle. Why? Cause if people know where Iam, all I HAVE to do is camp, making easy kills since everyone will show up at my front door, lol better yet why dont you give me a molotov oh wise and great CLONE-ONE-ONE-SEVEN! I like this idea in general.
If a sniper misses, then they won't pop up on the HUD, but if they land a hit, they should have the red/orange chevron show up for a few seconds (but only visible to the one they hit).
I think snipers should just be thankful they don't pop up on the radar/HUD for everybody to see as soon as they shoot at all, as that's how it works in most FPS games. But not having their chevron show up after getting a hit or kill is a bit ridiculous, especially considering the HUD hit-marker is gone before I even get a chance to see it and the direction they shot me from.
Basically I just lose huge chunks of health from some unknown location, the sniper might as well be invisible and have a suppressor to make them completely silent.
Also LOL at some of the comments. How about this one you turkeys, don't like the mass driver? Well don't be in front of me when I shoot it!
I think I'll use that for the next tank QQ thread. Don't like AV, think it's OP? Then don't get in the sights of my forge or be around me when I have AV nades equipped! Oh and don't let swarms lock onto you... seriously, derp!

the problem is when u deal with thales..its always next to impossible to find them to counter snipe them...
the only effective way to hunt down the annoying sniper is by derpship...using a mass driver..
the reason why is that this is the only effective way to deal with redzone snipers...
i have seen way to many invisible snipers on my games...
i can deal with the ocassional rooftop sniper or hill sniper i can deal with the snipers.. that are out of the redzone..the sniper i cant seem to get rid of is the sniper hiding in the redzone that is in an area where no one can counter snipe..
i may have dumped a few skill points just to unlock a tactical for counter sniping..
ive gotten good at counter sniping...but what i havnt gotten good at in the area is sniping the invisible nub in the redzone......
no 1 should be able to hide from the field of view of a derpship...
and shooting a high powered rifle should give away your position...
i know plenty of ppl that could deal with something like this...
heck alot of the times when i was sniped and did see the hit marker point to where i was shot from i grabbed a sniper.... looked to where the hit marker said i was shot from... and didnt see any1...
i giant red arrow over their head or a marking of their direction on the minimap. would solve this problem. |

There should be a damage indicator. Lore-wise, it makes sense, because we have them for much less damaging weapons, and for people complaining about how itll make snipers easy to find, how so? All it will show is that the shot came from the left side, not exactly which hill they were on. I do like that ohk don't give a damage indicator. Rewards headshots. But If the shot doesn't kill them, definitely I would expect to know where the shot came from. |

Best solution is to make the sniper "line" stay in the air for a few more seconds similar to how obvious it was in the original Halo.
This way you can look in the general direction and wait for a few more shots to really be able to see where the shot is coming from. |

Clone... Stop... You are thinking ideas on the fly through rage for a class you aren't, if they release a way for respec be a sniper, then tell me what you think, don't b*tch about something you aren't okay an idea like yours will only put everyone into forge gun sniping, IN THE RED LINE, aside from that you'd also lose 1/3rd of the Dust community, as I said before we aren't OP'd just yet to require a nerf... |

People dedicate themselves to a class, the dedicated are rewarded, simple no? Secondly yes it would because either:
A. I'd need a bodyguard 24/7
Or
B. Need a heavy for sniping albeit it takes 2-3 head shots, that extra protection + the H slot (If using standard or sentinel) might as well forge gun snipe....
Aside from that AR users have a critical range advantage at long range, this would grossly help vets to steam roll much much more easily if the snipers cover was blown, understand? And when I say advantage at long range 252 Shield and 132 armor at a distance of 200 meters (around 120-150) still manages to kill me. In any case if the guys in Light Armor kudos, hes a freebie... |

No to giant red arrow (LOL wtf)
Yes to sniper trails showing up for slightly longer (0.5-1.0s) OR being more obvious.
Yes to damage indicators showing up for longer (0.5-1.0s). They currently do and it's easy to figure out the general direction as long as you don't die in 1 shot.
This coming from a non-sniper that picks up a militia sniper from time to time, so I might be biased. |

Sniping is my secondary role and I actually agree with you. Longer trail means snipers have to move more often. Longer damage indicator means the sniper will have to focus on head shots. In life a sniper must be cautious when firing more then one round as, chances are, there cover is blown. This would just enforce that belief as currently I am able to shoot a guy with a full clip and still not find it necessary to move. Additionally, SR needs a SLIGHT base and head damage buff as I shouldn't HAVE to shoot a guy 5 dam times unless he's a heavy.

It's only available through battle salvage so whoever is using one will most likely try to conserve the number of times they will use it. This leads to my next point: 3. Due to the fact it's rare, if someone is using one they will try to prolong their clones life span so they won't lose one (this means possible redline sniping)

Don't mind vapor trails, especially since at 500-750meters range (The weapon in question is probably good to 4000meters) the vapor trails dissipate which is good for sniping. Now hear this it's not that I want snipers to be invisible (which is kinda the premises of being a sniper) At 300 meters the vapor trails should last 1.5 seconds longer but decrease the further away you are from your target. Alas again a snipers duty is to take out problem targets but at base, adv, and proto standard level wouldn't have enough power OHK targets (Which it should). |

the giant red arrow would be more effective...at certain ranges.that little sniper trail doesnt exist.
because of render distances.
the many times ive been hit by a sniper and looked to where they hit me from i took a derpship and was still unable to find them..
that giant red arrow above their head for a short time would only give some better information of where the shot came from..
i may snipe from time to time but this will kill camping for snipers.
and thats the point of it.
your location should be known after firing your first few shots.
its a great idea really...
and if the sniper is out of render range..
it will give better detail as to where those invisible bullets r coming from.
so the only ppl to hate it r the ones that want to rain down bullets onto players for the entire match concealed in a box of safety...

you just want to stop people from camping in general, and with that idea, you are just condemning snipers more to extinction. snipers aren't suppose to be found right away or have some big indicator above their heads just because you can't see far due to rendering, or a big distance gap like 200+ meters. whenever i get hit by snipers, I look and walk in the direction i was shot from, going from cover to cover, to find where they are. you just hate having to use tactics and change your play style just because something didn't go your way. you want some easy way of life for yourself while making it hard for others to be effective. you just hate how snipers are and just want them to be in your face at all times. do this before you spout ideas, dedicate yourself to the sniper class, not as a counter, and learn how hard life is without that AR you love using. then you can come back and judge snipers. |

this is how it goes the sniper u r trying to snipe normally have a height advantage. meaning that sniper over there will be hard to try and counter without use of ds.
and if they r camping in the redzone...
well its only fair that players should get to know the general area in which they r camping.
as most of the time players rnt going to know where they r located..
all my idea does is make finding that camper a little easier.

as most of the time players rnt going to know where they r located..
all my idea does is make finding that camper a little easier.
you also tend to forget that most red line snipers don't have much of a field of vision as you think. only some maps do but most of them have cities or other obstructions which limits their views. and honestly, red line snipers are by far the easiest ones to kill, unless they glitch. some people don't use their brains when hit by a sniper, and look at where they got hit. or only look in the direction and not walk towards it to find them exactly. when i get hit by a sniper, i walk towards the direction after i walk around to find and kill them. maybe you should try walking to them instead of away from them |

ud think that would work but it doesnt alot of the time.
and what ur saying is basically what my idea makes easier...
that field of vision from the redzone may not cover certain specific areas.
but those chosen camp spots do cover a very wide view of the map, its not that narrow. |

what your suggesting is that snipers be made public for some kind of execution and make sniping more scarce then it already is. as of right now, people can hardly snipe out of the red line and rarely in the red line with that field of vision. the sniper role is almost gone and with that suggestion, will be most likely destroyed |

the sniper role will not be gone.
many games i play it ends up like this...
one player starts sniping...
gets several kills.
then suddenly some1 on the other team decides to grab an sr and start trying to find the sniper..
and then a few minutes later no1 but a few ppl r trying to go for an objective while the rest of the entire teams r camping trying to snipe each other...
and so the players running on the ground trying to hack objectives and so on get punished by getting slaughtered by snipers hiding out in the several camp spots we already know about and others that r still being discovered..
this is one of the reasons why ccp designed the new maps the way they r currently.
many of the objectives r inside structures and protected by cover and such..
my big red arrow over your head for short amount of time idea doesnt take away all the camp spots but instead.
it helps the helpless ground player get the chance for some revenge...
and most likely.
it wont change much.
it really only affects your beloved redzone sniper/camper.
so nothing major to worry about.
the only player that would likely be gunning for u is the angry player uve been farming for points..

so in turn with your suggestion, you make it easy for ground troops to kill snipers, and make it harder for snipers to operate. you forget that with that big arrow, you show where a camp spot is for all, and thus render that spot useless, and continue the process again and again, until all are using CQC weapons. your idea is doing the opposite what what you say. snipers don't need to be penalized anymore. make it so snipers can function in some kind of CQC so they can do their job. also, i ask this of you right now. what is the sniper's role in this game at this very moment? to me, with all that is changing with maps, the sniper's roles are becoming lost and destroyed. |

a combat sniper role means that sniper should always be on the move. moving from spot to spot.
thats what the big red arrow idea forces the sniper to do.
to move around more on the battle field.
that same sniper will also have some cqc effective with the use of the secondary weapon.
the way players snipe is this way currently.
they stand in one spot for the entire game. on a little safe hill..
they should be found out after firing their first few rounds.
and even if players start gunning for them they would still have a side arm to fall back on.
and seeing how they already have a tactical advantage by being on top of a hill where their enemy doesnt have much of any cover. taking them down shouldnt be a problem.
that sniper rifle is supposed to help those in cqc combat with the assault rifles in such by taking out enemy players in heavy cover.
thats why headshots ohk nearly every time with a sniper rifle.
my idea does not kill sniping.
if a sniper wants to do cqc that sniper will have a limited cqc effectiveness.
with the use of a side arm.
the new maps which most snipers seem to hate is because there are few camp spots on the map.
id say the new maps where designed to force players who want to snipe to move around the map from point to point. not stay in one place for the entire map.
my big red arrow idea. forces the sniper to change locations every once in a while. as they should be doing.
so if several camp locations get found out by majority of the blueberries. all it means is that ull have to be moving around a little more if u want to avoid getting killed.
what this does is give sniping an actual role.
and kills its well known reputation as the (PAD YOUR OWN KDR) gun.
it also makes it a true recon class. |

snipers are suppose to move yes, but a sniper can't fill a combat role with it's gun sway and being about 100-50 meters away, which most guns can shoot up to. it's can't be recon if they have to get in close and not see anything but buildings. snipers are not suppose to be found so easily, otherwise they would just grab CQC weapons and go to the front lines. you want to change the way a sniper works without changing the attributes of the sniper rifle. relying on my side arm when an scrambler or AR is not as reliable unless they get in my range, which is often not the case. do you know why snipers red line more often since 1.4? it's because they can't function at 100 meters without dying, and nothing is past 100-150 meters without something blocking their way. i been trying to snipe in all maps, finding different and out of the ordinary uses for my sniper. example, i strafe with it while aiming down my swaying scope in CQC and hope i can land those few shots. sometimes it works, sometimes not. why i do that? because everything caters to CQC mostly. snipers shouldn't be the only class that have to change tactics drastically, but all others should as well. if people die to a sniper and can't change tactics or fittings, then that is just lazy and stupid |

this would be a big help! for counter sniping... How easy do you want this game to be? You can already spot snipers across the map. Even if YOU don't see them, your HUD will show a nice big, red chevron just above their head. Or you can scan them through walls, from 200m away. If you can't find a sniper, either 1) he doesn't do much damage to your team, or 2) he keeps killing your teammates and you suck.
Also, a sniper will need up to 8 hits, 2 reloads, and up to 16 seconds to kill a fully buffed heavy. In that time, anyone can run up to them and kill them from 80m with an AR.

Besides, countersniping always works.
CLONE117 wrote:thats why headshots ohk nearly every time with a sniper rifle. Sniper headshot damage has recently been nerfed. Put some SP in eHP and use your speed to your advantage.

One of the most skill intensive roles in the game and we want to be able to counter them easier, despite being required to practically hold completely still and have little to no information on your surroundings when sighting a target.
I disagree with this thread. It's pretty well balanced as it is. You're not going to instantly know where a shot came from, five hundred meters away when you take a bullet in the ribs - you might know the general direction, which is what we have now. |

now that ive drawn out most of the ppl who obviously rnt good at the game itself and must desperately try to shoot down my idea so they can sleep at night.
im going to state what normally happens in most of the games i have played when it comes to snipers.
what my idea intended for them is it makes it to where they cant camp in one spot for the entire game.
that right there is not sniping..that is camping with a sniper rifle.
now to the above idiot who said most snipers are always in scout suits..
that just.no just no.that is the stupidest thing to say ever when it comes to snipers.
most of the snipers i have come across. are in proto caldari medium dropsuits.
sure ull come across the rare scout gk0 but thats about it. there is also the occasional player using the heavy suit to snipe with.
but its all mostly med frames from here..
when talking about suits.
headshots do ohk nearly everytime.
and that right there is fine.
what isnt fine is the fact that same sniper can endlessly fire that loud sniper rifle getting kills on players (that are aware of whats around them.) for the entire game with out getting spotted.
being a sniper should be a role that involves lots of self awareness..
what ive seen in game isnt a role that involves lots of self awareness..
all i have seen so far when it comes to snipers are players that go to a high position overlooking the entire battle field(mostly in the redzone).
take random pot shots on random players on the ground that are actually trying to get stuff done by hacking objectives and such.
and remain completely unaware of their own surroundings.
this what those "snipers" do majority of the time.
and thats why its so easy to sneak up on the most snipers. so u could think of this as a buff for all u know.
that big red arrow over your head idea would be helpfull..
plus u can look on the bright side.. ull know when that angry player will be coming..
the assault rifle only kills effectively at up to 66 meters anything at 67 and above and u rnt doing hardly any damage with that regular assault rifle.
and because of rendering problems snipers can snipe without worry..
my idea will put some actual risk into using that sniper class..
all that big red arrow needs to do is mark the place u r hiding around...no need to put it directly over your head..
but it sounds like it would be easier to code if it was.. ( it could also just mark your position on the radar/minimap for 10-15 seconds after firing your gun)
sure some players have an obsession with killing players using officer weapons in pub matches.
and the player should deserve that death for bringing it in the first place.
so think of that big red arrow over your head after your first several shots as a buff for helping u become aware of whats around you and not whats in front of your scope.
after all it is ironic when a giant loud explosion can easily be heard right BEHIND you and yet u not notice anything at all...
this wont change the camp spots that rnt in the redzone much but it will get rid of those redline snipers that majority of every1 on this game hates so much.
dont try to defend it..
it will only prove how childish u really are as it wont kill sniping at all.. it will only mean u will need to be more accurate with your shots.
and judging by how most ground players will often ignore vehicles and snipers.
the only player u have to worry about is that player u have annoyed and made so angry to waste several isk into just finding u and killing u once.
and so it shouldnt be too hard to counter that player.

your idea is not a buff. i don't know if you know, but the battles are constantly shifting from place to place, and a sniper's main tactic is to go where the battle is and might be, and set up camp or something. from what i hear from you is that you don't fully take the time to track said sniper and snipe or kill him, but instead want to make the game easier for you to not change tactics when the job calls for it. you just don't like getting sniped, as a lot of people and so want snipers to be easily spotted and hunted down to extinction. before you make such a change, make it also fair for snipers to be able to be effective. otherwise you just killed off sniping for good. |

the caldari sniper rifle is a form of a rail gun.

that guy with the ar just floating around?
why it sounds like hes trying to defend the objective from any players that would try to sneak around where majority of the players are.
its hard to snipe a player thats glitching. or out of render range.
and next to impossible to snipe some1 camping in the redzone with a charge or thale. with a std sr or a std tac sr.
which is the main weapon used by most counter snipers.
the many times ive picked up a sniper rifle was for the intent to counter snipe.
and the many places ive sniped from have been the places i was last hit by snipers.
and what i normally do is try to find the sniper by scanning the area from where i was last hit from with that sr scope.
and most of the time this little tactic fails. because that "sniper" is either hidden out of rendering range or using a glitch.
my idea fixes that problem.
most players already spot the current rooftop snipers/campers that r out of the redzone.
very easily and very quickly r they spotted.. but the only time they get obliterated is when some1 gets angry enough to waste the isk on a ds and clear them out.
so with this in mind i only see it affecting those who hide in the redzone. |

But you're right about profile dampening and the visibility of bullets. That doesn't make any sense! |

when i bring out some proto gear should i expect to die? yes.
when u pick up a sniper rifle and snipe from the redzone do u expect to die? no u dont.
well i think its time to change that. |

well i think its time to change that. You keep referring to redline sniping....have you ever gone redline hunting?
I have and it's fun, the timer counting down, spotting the sniper and scaring the jeebies out of him.
It's great fun!!!! But by the sounds of it, you haven't even tried to locate a sniper. You just keep running the same path, getting killed and then QQing about it. |

CLONE117 wrote:now to the above idiot who said most snipers are always in scout suits.. That's me! Thanks for calling me an idiot. I regard it as a compliment, seeing who it's coming from. Yes, there are a lot of assaults sniping, but those are usually not the specialized ones. More the kind of people that retreat at the end of a losing battle, trying to get some kills and save some fittings.
CLONE117 wrote:headshots do ohk nearly everytime. Do the math - that's just not true. Only for light fittings. If this keeps happening to you, you have to step up on your game.
CLONE 117 wrote:what isnt fine is the fact that same sniper can endlessly fire that loud sniper rifle getting kills on players (that are aware of whats around them.) for the entire game with out getting spotted. What's keeping you from spotting them? You've got a HUD, a 200m through-the-wall scanner, a whole team, a direction indicator (when shot and not OHK'd), bullet trails, hills for overview and your own scope to find them. If he can shoot you, you can shoot him back.
CLONE 117 wrote:all i have seen so far when it comes to snipers are players that go to a high position overlooking the entire battle field(mostly in the redzone). The snipers in the redzone usually don't contribute much to a fight, due to lack of vision and distance rendering. Don't worry about them. They're more of a nuisance when your own team then when they've joined your enemy.
"this what those "snipers" do majority of the time. and thats why its so easy to sneak up on the most snipers. so u could think of this as a buff for all u know."
So snipers aren't a threat and it's easy to sneak up to them. What's your problem?
"that big red arrow over your head idea would be helpfull.." ...and unrealistic. And overkill...
"plus u can look on the bright side.. ull know when that angry player will be coming.." So how does that help me?
"the assault rifle only kills effectively at up to 66 meters anything at 67 and above and u rnt doing hardly any damage with that regular assault rifle." I beg to differ. Not according to my kill screen.
"and because of rendering problems snipers can snipe without worry.." As long as you stay within 100-150m from the target. Too close, and you're dead meat. Further, and there's rendering issues. Not seeing your targets is kinda worrying.
"but it sounds like it would be easier to code if it was.." I doubt this is the problem.
" it could also just mark your position on the radar/minimap for 10-15 seconds after firing your gun)" You said redline sniping is the problem. How can you see a redline sniper on the minimap?
"dont try to defend it.. it will only prove how childish u really are as it wont kill sniping at all.. it will only mean u will need to be more accurate with your shots." I'm not defending redline sniping. I just find your idea idiotic and a threat to the sniper class, if it'd ever be implemented. |

to me that sounds like a red line problem. new flash, forge guns can do the same to some extent, as well as rail tanks (if no render issue). find a better idea to stop red line sniping rather then single out the entire sniper class and then maybe you won't get red line sniped |

it became a spam thread at the beginning on the first page when u all first posted the to try and "shoot down" my "suggestion" and yet u all failed to ignore it.

I hope you folks realize that there is a hit indicator, and that people who survive the initial shot tend to run out and die just to change to a counter sniping fit, only to search for the target and neutralize them. C'mon, quit ruining the game for others because you don't know how to deal with a sniper.

Clone doesn't understand the true role of a sniper. Snipers are meant to be nearly stationary overwatch. fire-support, and killers. Calling this "camping" is a whiny, fallacious cop-out. No SNIPER is constantly moving around the battlefield, whether with a squad or not. Someone who does that is called a "DESIGNATED MARKSMAN" and it's is a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT AND SEPARATE ROLE from snipers.
Clone takes issue with the snipers as they're truly meant to be, because he's frustrated by them and nothing more. He wants to force them to be designated marksmen, or penalize them for not being so, because that would make them easier to kill, or just get rid of them altogether.
Trying to point out the legitimacy of ACTUAL snipers to him just results in him poorly disguising his argument as being aimed at people using sniper rifles from the red-line, even though his stupid idea is clearly meant to break ALL snipers. Red-liners aren't much of an issue, but either way, they're not to be lumped in with legit snipers. If they're to be dealt with, it needs to be in a way that won't affect others. |

As it is now, I might as well be battling an invisible player that can take me out in 1-2 seconds shooting invisible rounds that make no noise. but they silently nerfed our hit detection |

I sort of disagree with you on this one, Irian. The best snipers don't need to stay on the move, because they're very hard to find. Before CCP started it's anti-sniper campaign, I only needed to move 1-3 times during a match. And that's how it should be. |
