Auto-aim is currently badly bugged; sometimes it will do too much, sometimes it isn't there at all. Different people will have different experiences with it. They're currently working on fixing the issue.

+1, pilots definitely need more love. Been taking up dropships recently, and there is MUCH less to be gained in this, the epitome of a support role, as compared to driving a tank or being on foot.
