You may want to think about swapping one of those plates for a repair mod; while it won't help you win the first fight, it might save you in the second. Certainly it gives you more options.

I think it's also determined by your placement on the kill board (so higher means better payout) and by victory or defeat (so winning gets more ISK). EDIT: and those expensive kills add more ISK to the total pot.
