In short, there are two months left in the year (Wow did it go by fast), and the game still suffers from severe technical issues, coupled with either broken or partially developed core mechanics. During the 2 or so months I've tested the game, I have noticed improvement in many of the game's elements such as the UI, player interaction, and visual effects. However, if the game were to release as it is in the coming months then I do not see how it will fair well to reviewers or players who aren't part of the EVE fanbase.
I am aware that it is a free MMO, and thus will forever be updated. (Considering CCP stays in business, which is likely)
Despite that, the game is not ready to be revealed to the public in this state (in my opinion). No matter if it were $60 retail or came bundled for free with every PS3 system, being released in this state will be inexcusable.
My complaints mostly stem from that the game is both technically and fundamentally broken on numerous aspects. According to other player previews, these issues have not been fixed for well over several months. This leads me to infer that they won't be fixed completely in the coming months as well. Yet, while the bigger issues are either being ignored (or at least not being addressed to the players as often), new features are being added with their own issues. Would it be better to focus more on the core mechanics of shooting, connectivity, and stability before worrying about nerfing weapons?
This game has huge potential, but I truly think a release around this time next year would be the best option. |

Actually, the stuff they're adding is needing to be tested. Release is scheduled for later this year; otherwise, Sony would null the contract and this game will be scrapped. They have to keep giving us more to test. Yeah. Its going to be a long 2 months, but this new stuff they keep adding has to be tested, or else full release will be a long way's away. We gotta test all this stuff, and we gotta make sure we streamline this testing as best we can, or the game'll suffer.

Had you played the build before e3 then you would see how much its improved, but also it has taken a few steps back. And we all going to die Dec 21 anyway lol, so they may release early to give us a few days before the zombie apocalypse |

Well that's disappointing.
I understand the need to test new implementations, but what good is that when the core foundations remain unchanged? Couldn't these newer concepts be introduced once the game is stable enough for an initial public release? |

I'll wait and see if moving to the TQ server will help the technical issues before I declare if the game will be released this year or next.Whatever the case may be and while it seems like this game is probably still a long ways off,CCP(if they are all off of vacation yet) are probably working on the final product right now,or at least finishing up the next build(hopefully).

CCP as 2 versions of dust
the release version-which only they have access to atm
and the beta version-which we are playing the hell out of
they add content to the beta to see how it works and if it does it is then implemented into the release game what we are playing is constantly updated and subject to change every single day .

You make a valid point.
Only thing is that at some stage, the version you refer to also needs to be tested in the wild. That's like a release candidate version. And that is then fine tuned and released.
That activity takes time.
So, the question is, that its already the end of October, and given that many core elements are problematic, is it realistic to expect an AAA release before 2013?
I hope I'm wrong, and they've got a polished gem but with just over two months left till the end of the year, its a tough job to do....

You don't get it do ya? Lol when eve came out in 2003 it was bugged, and half the features in the game now were not present on release, its taken time to get it to what it is now. Yes dust is buggy, yes it has problems, but over time it will improve. If this was going to be a disk release title then there would be worries but its not, its digital. So because its digital that means its constantly evolving and having bugs fixed and features added. This is not final release code, its beta code. Upon final release it may still have some bugs and not all announced features will be present but that will change over time. alot of people are coming into this BETA expecting a final release code, well it don't work that way. A game of this magnitude takes alot of time to develop and fix, the daily downtimes are not for ccp to go make tea and shoot pool........the daily downtimes are for fixing bugs. If ccp took dust offline altogether to fix it then y'all would be moaning about that too. If everything is not ironed out FOR release then it will be ironed out bit by bit AFTER release, just like eve was.......and look where eve is now.

Movement has changed every single build.
Shooting other players has changed every single build. Did you not notice that they have by and large fixed the crappy hit detection that there were endless complaint threads about since as far back as I can remember?
Communicating with other players has changed every single build. Have you talked to an EVE player in a chat channel while playing Dust? Now we can even click on their icons and it doesn't log us out of the game.
But I don't think these are technically the most basic parts that compose the game. If you were to compare Dust to a person, these are the flesh of the game. Some of these things need some work, granted. But there are some deep structural things that they are putting in place as well, and it all has to work together.
But yeah, they have said they are laser focused on the moment to moment gameplay, and I agree that the changes are not always immediately gratifying.
But we really do just stop noticing when things are improved to where they are working really well, and go on to complain, Ummm, I mean, give constructive feedback on the things that don't seem to be quite right. I do it all the time. It is really easy to forget how much has changed and improved.
Edit* Forgot to add what I usually post in these threads: Dust is not going to be released. It is just going to keep on truckin. As others have pointed out it is not a disk in a box. It is not going to be sold. They do not have to move a million copies off of store shelves in the first month to make a profit then release a trickle of DLC. There will always be something to come back to. |

The thing is, it's simply not an issue of "Oh, the game doesn't have all of it's features yet." The game, as it is, would not be accepted as release material in any format. I'm sure EVE was not in this state two months before release.
That is why I was hoping for a 2013 release so all the crippling issues are fixed, then new features are tested and implemented. You can't just rush a beta out into the open and say "Oh, it'll get better with your input!" The public has to have a solid product, first, then expand upon that. We aren't QA, and I surely don't believe the public will be pleased with an actual release at this state, despite being in digital format. |

Apparently the devs at the recent London show were saying this is it, by and large, it's just tweaks here on in. This is third hand info, from a work mate who went was chatting to the guys there about it. Apparently we will be given a release code and that will be it. Given the next wipe comes when we move to tranquility, we are playing the final product, in so far as it can be termed final.
He did say though that the version open for test visually looked so much better. He asked if it was running on pc or ps3. The question & answer may have been lost in translation, but he was told "this will be ps3". Don't forget the Russians were playing this build, so it's safe to assume, that despite its faults, this is most likley it.
Personally I think it's a great idea, I have enjoyed the beta, but I find I play less and less now, I never found hit detection a problem, (only with snipers and that's terrain related) I pulsed the AR. Now the stream of bullets is so tight that there is no additional skill needed other than to keep on target. The game was at it peak two patches ago, when we got the new gameplay and map, the only good addition by last patch was the eradication of the drop ship tower bombardment.
CCP is unlikely to fix issues with missile turrets, they seem to really like missiles. And with the taming of the standard AR, there seems no need for burst or breach anymore, I can spray fire from the hip now and hit guys. The game has moved forward but rather than enticing me to play more, I play less. I won't delete it and will stil play it on release, but that's just because it's f2p and I have arum in game already and I may have eve reasons in the future.
Thanks for letting me have beta access ccp, it was and still is fun, but its going down a more simplified path for reasons i fully understand. Contrary to most posts, you have listened to most stuff on the forums, some of it did improve the game, but I think an awful lot more took away the promise.
PS can the MAG whiners turn it off? I have put up with your negative non conrtuctive posts for the last 5-6 months. Your beloved is a zombie, this game is not MAG, go take your negative vibes and play with the corpse you love. Or start putting constructive stuff on here like you once did. |

Where did you come up with this? Sounds like BS to me.
Exactly. NO ONE in the software business will fully expect a product delivery on time. There may be contractual ramifications should they slip into next year. But the problem is that software is so heinously complex that perfectly predicting the development timetable is impossible. Still, I suspect that the next build will be the last closed one. I said the same in the last build, however it would be insane to try to put the next build on TQ before it's been thoroughly tested. |

Done it before? I thought this was CCPs first shooter title. A speech I watched from fanfest featured the speaker touching on the immense development difficulties of DUST. Both because of environment (since EVE is primarily empty space) as well as the limitations of the PS3. |

It took them 10 YEARS to get EVE where it is now by that time PS5 would be on it's way. What will happen if PS4 drops and gets a planetside 2 port or Sony decides to give the Planetside devs a crack at MAG 2? 10 years is to long for a console game. This is why I said months ago CCP should just take it to the PC and be done with it. |

I agree with Regis.
And I do get it. I've been saying in so many posts, there is at least three years of work to bring dust up to scratch to AAA standard.
There is no doubt that there will be a MAG 2 on PS4, probably a launch title.
The problem for ccp is that there will be better quality fps games, maybe not as deep in terms of mmo as dust, but better game play, and people won't play dust if it remains like this....
All a developer needs to do is make a 32vs32 game with clan battle support, solid FPS mechanics, a bit of eye candy and a perpetual clan leader board, and that'll be the end of dust on the console...
Now look at the sentence above and you see what ccp need to fix to stay in the game for a long time....
- increase player counts - improved FPS mechanics - better grouping mechanics - better graphics
Those four things, done properly, will keep the game kicking with solid numbers from launch, for years, because dust already has the persistence and open universe sorted.... |
